So sorry to learn of Ahmad Jamal's passing. So grateful I got to see him play once at Blues Alley in DC about 30 years ago. He was one of a kind, will be missed. RIP.
Ahmad Jamal is such a Professional Perfectionist One The The Greatest Pianist Of All Time with likes of Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Les McCann, Lonnie Liston Smith, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver & Joe Zawinul . Love You Brother, You Live on.
A Master Jazz Pianist!!! Period! Just watching those digits move! Once saw him play 'Live' in NYC, late 90's, following an interview he did on, "The Joey Reynolds Show," on WOR/NYC where I was a Producer at the time. Ahmad Jamal's wife was there with him. I cherish the CD 'gifted' to me at the time.
Got brought to see him at 18 or 19 years old by a friend who had an extra ticket at his table at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. We had literally the best table in the house and I (somewhat selfishly, in retrospect) snagged the best seat at the table, with a perfect view of Ahmad's hands. To say my mind was blown would be the understatement of the century. I have seen literally over 1,000 acts perform and I know for a fact that I will forever consider this to be one of the best concerts I ever saw.
Closest to Perfection in pure Art and Brilliance that I've ever seen or heard in my 70+ Years since listening to Piano and Jazz since early Childhood! This Man is truly Blessed and is a great Blessing to us ALL.
The coolest of jazz composers and artists. A genius. He had a distinct sound. I just heard his song on Colbert. Had no idea he had passed. Huge loss. Musical perfection.
Yes, if you love bass its better to be able to hear it! So many great bass players went their whole careers without anyone hearing what they were playing 90% of the time. Amazing that so few jazz bassists adopted electric when they became available in the 50's. Fender even made one called the Jazz, specifically without frets.
Dang....James Cammack was a BEAST on that fret-less! The drummer was definitely on point, and there are just no words for the late, great Ahmad Jamal.🖤🎼
I know Jaco was awesome but what about this guy. Not sure who he is amazing musicians I love how Ahmad is instructing the drummer. Awesome performance.
RIEP Maestro Ahmad Jamal, 4/16/23. Jammin' again with Yusef Lateef. Two of my greatest influences! I am blessed to have heard you both perform live and meet you after. Deepest condolences to the family circle. Asé asé 🙏🏼❤️👏🏼🫶🕊🎶🎹🔥🌎
I have to say that along with McCoy Tyner, Joe Sample and George Duke, Ahmad Jamal is in the top tier of my pantheon of pianists. To watch Ahmad perform live in concert is a spectacle not-to-be-missed.
Some very tasty fretless electric bass. I know the acoustic upright is the classic style but you can barely hear it most of the time. Electric fretless, handled properly, has a flowing, vocal quality to it. Snazzy drumming too. Top-notch rhythm section backing up the agile piano playing.
Great production at this festival, like so many I have seen on YT. Those ivories are ticklish as artfully demonstrated by a master. thanks for posting WoJ Vive and happy belated birthday, 90YO Mr. Ahmad Jamal! 2 yrs behind my Dad but, only in years.
Wonders never cease Ahmad bodisatva. Thank you for sharing these numbers and this concert. I've seen Mr Jamal live three times . This is exactly how it sounds, crisp, flowing, generous to a heart. Peace. M
Listening without looking, i thought to myself, "if you aregoing to get that sound out of the oldschool upright pickups, you might was well just play bass guitar!!"....but turned out he already was
Ahmad was an early adopter of technology and things electric and electronic. If you listen to his recordings beginning in the early 70s, he uses the Fender Rhodes electric piano, liberally
Not on the bass he's playing - there's not enough fretboard curve. It can be done on upright electrics though, which tend to have a fretboard curve more like a traditional double bass.
Is it me or does it seem like Ahmad is riding that drummer like crazy. Visual cues almost to distraction. But just for the drummer - not really for James Cammack. Weird. An amazing group though. I love James Cammack's fretless playing!
Agreed. I get the feeling Jamal "settled" for this drummer and isn't pleased. Great drummer, but not Jamal's typical flavor. He does favor the China cymbal a bit much .... a lot of folks don't like that. His tom angles and head choices tell me he's probably more of a rock or fusion drummer. 🤷🏻♂️
I don't think he was riding him--just not used to playing with him--Bowler is great--very different from Jamal's other drummers but killed good--I am a sure Jamal appreciated him.
I saw this band in London at jazz cafe and Ahmad was not pleased with the drummer , he would not play the cymbal where Ahmad wanted it and he was furious , and the place was a building site , James cammack is one of the very best though , i do prefer him on a real bass , top man !
I didnt know this drummer, but played with jamal for many years and recorded 3 album, so I guess Jamal did not dislike him or he would have changed, considering his status. He sounds a modern drummer, less traditional jazz. But this kind of palette is similar to herlin riley before him and idris muhammad, after. I find him a very good one, maybe just a bit fresh and not enough rich in tone for jamal level, but he plays really well.
Had hoped to see Mr. Jamal live someday; not sure if he still performs concerts, I"m old now, and he is considerably older. Great side men on this video!
I consider myself extremely lucky that I moved to LA in 2000 when he was still coming here every few years. I probably saw him 5 times. The last time I just happened to look in the paper (!) and saw he was playing that night at the Nate Holden. His concerts were mind blowing and I’m truly sorry you couldn’t have seen one.
@@johnsrabe You are fortunate indeed! I took up upright bass in the mid 70"s and practiced by learning every song on his Awakening album. He definitely opened my ears and mind to piano jazz. I owe him a great debt for that. It has lasted me a lifetime. Take care out there on the Left Coast!
@@michaelmcdonald3057 I will. The Awakening is such an awesome album. (Anyone reading this exchange: go buy it and listen to it immediately!) And thanks for the reminder to listen to it again.

One of the very best artists I have ever heard
What a great artist always enjoyed his work
Another Legend is gone ,One of my favorites , he and Ramsey were incomparably simular ,but irreplaceable.
Great.. What a Trio - what a DRUMMER
Love the baby at 15:00. Kids need jazz.

Love the the unique sound of Fret-less Bass
and with such precision that you'd think there were frets....no way, incredible bassist !
I wish Ahmad hadn't made James Cammack stop playing electric bass. The music was fiery.

This music makes me happy. Almost as happy as the baby in the background @15:01.
Yes!!! The baby's coos were awesomeness just like the concert!
Saw him at Detroit Jazz Festival around 2016. Savion Glover tap dancing while chewing gum awesome memorable

Ahmad is a kaiser ! youre right sir !
Don't forget H.Hancock. All different styles, but equally great!
The percussionist was literally sweating...sweat drops were dwindling down his beard...MASTERFUL
all three of them they had to sweat, man, really hot !
every strong dial on first....like animals, like solderes, like ships...its not a music, not jazzz
I remember it was sweltering heat that day!

Legendarische video, ik zou echt in mn broek poepen als ik die drummer of bassist was, om 1 foutje te maken...

Absolute legend
Grande Triozão!!
A litle free musical combination
Now this Guy can “improvise” 😄🎼🎹
What an amazing invention! To be able to play a string bass like a guitar. Can he still use a bowing device?

@@rataMacue22 🤣, he was his drummer for six years. As if Ahmad Jamal cant find any drummers and has to "settle" for this guy.
