Wendy Dio is a wonderful lady.
On my 16th birthday (about 12 years ago) a group of friends and I were taken to a Dio show on the Holy Diver tour, and it was arranged by our youth group to meet the Dio and the band, who were all so happy to answer every one of our questions and sign records.
After the show, Wendy came to check we had a good time. When she found it was my birthday she took me to the merch stand and asked me what I would like. I was dumbfounded, so she passed me one of the new box sets and said she hoped it was ok.
Ronnie and Wendy are true heroes!

Notice that unlike most musicians talking about themselves in WFOF, it seems like she doesn't even have to think... Before answering questions not on what she lived herself, but on what her dead husband told her years ago! That is some true loyalty right there. Gotta love it.

As someone who knew him from 70 to 77,78, I can attest how amazing his memory was. To be honest, I NEVER visited him backstage without the "social" passing of the joint, never. In those earlier days, we were two bassplayers from bands that shared several venues, but except for him excitedly telling me about their first upcoming Elf lp, and once handing me his bass to check out (his idea), we didn't really talk about music. We were just two friends who both played bass, just enjoying their breaks. He was a very intelligent man, gracious, and a great friend. He didn't even get bent when I asked him his height (I then told him he was within a half inch of my mom, my grand dad was shorter, like his cousin Rock.).

Bradley Mabb that’s cool! I wish I knew him, I want to be a lead guitarist, but I am currently on the struggle bus, his wife sent me a letter, it was a nice letter, but I’ve heard bad things about her and idk how to feel about Mrs Wendy Dio myself, but Ronnie James Dio you can tell by looking at him he was a good guy.

I met Ronnie on the Headbangers Ball in Atlanta. There was a huge line. He stayed in line until the last fan left. He greeted every fan with a handshake. He talked to every fan..autographed every picture..and posed with every fan. He thanked us for coming. I have met hundreds of musicians and he is still the nicest. And everyone I have met that worked with him was just as kind. It was an honor to meet him.
And I met Wendy on the Monsters of Rock cruise and what a wonderful lady

I knew him from '70 to '77, 78. He was ALWAYS the gracious, great friend, from local to world fame. He always made ME feel like the guest of honor. That never changed. In the earlier days we both played bass in bands that shared several venues. But other than him handing me his bass to check out, and once taking out to their (Elves) equipment truck to tell me excitedly about the first Elf lp, we never talked music(oh, yeah, when we last spoke backstage at the Winterland in SF, he caught me up to date with what his former bandmates were up to). But he was an intelligent and the nicest of guys. And, he was keenly aware no matter what level, that he wouldn't be there if it weren't for the fans. At the Winterland, after finishing a mag interview and welcoming me with a big hug, I waited for him to meet several fans, autographs, and such, before we found a table in the corner of the "catered" room where we could just visit for an hour, hour and a half. I'll forever miss his great friendship.

A bunch of us cornered Ronnie outside his bus after an Angry Machines gig. The hotel manager tried to hold us back (because the public street was hotel property apparently), but Ronnie's manager told him to let us through, and Ronnie himself was the nicest guy on the planet; he signed everything, took pics, and smiled patiently at our star-struck idiocies. He was so warm and welcoming and friendly, he seemed genuinely happy to see us. I'll never forget that day and never forget him. . .

Thanks to her, I was able to get backstage passes to many UK Dio gigs over the years and met Wendy once, shook her hand and thanked her. I still thank her. The only thing she cares is a quick buck outta her dead husbands fans. Since Ronnie's death , this woman's been constantly milking the fanbase by releasing all kinds of "remasters" and "super buper deluxe edition" of Dio albums, merchandise, books, even resurrecting the poor guy with "hologram" concerts and stuff. and now she's been remarried again to some random guy.

I drew up a fist throwing the 'goat' with long fingernails and a spike bracelet erupting from the 'DIO' logo unto a bed sheet I cut to arms length.
During the concert I was already smiling ear to ear, sweating from all the head banging, holding that flag as high as I could. Between one of the numbers, over the mic, he looked me right in the eye, pointed and said 'nice flag'.

His love for his fans and the stage was ultimately his downfall. He went to see the doctor too late. Odd for me, since my band and his shared several venues in earlier days (70 to ? Can't remember when he stopped playing in WNY, but I moved back to Ca in '73.), but our drummer of the day died from the exact same cancer. Both Italian. Hmmm, diet? Dunno.

I knew Ronnie from fall of '70right up to the last time we talked (for over an hour) backstage at the Winterland in SF about 77, 78. They were on Rainbow's "Long Live Rock" tour. I got to see him go from local to world fame. And I can attest that he was always a gracious friend and backstage host from the beginning to end. He was also very intelligent and had amazing recall. He remembered friends, mutual fans, and venues (We shared several venues in those early Elves days). He always treated me like I was the special guest when we visited backstage. I still remember how he took me out to their equipment truck to tell about having finished the recording of the first Elf lp. He was very excited about that. Once again, what I remember most is what a great guy he was.

I named my four legged child Dio. He’s a corgi so small in stature but incredible in presence. He also has a powerful howl, yet is the sweetest most loving little man ever. There was no other name that would fit. It’s fun to see when people understand the name, but sadly most don’t. Dio was a huge idol of mine. I grew up with his music blasting in my house and when I got older and got to know more about him, I just loved him more. He too was a animal parent and loved animals and donated to animal charities. He was intelligent and stood for things. Plus, he was great at telling stories especially about his Italian family and the evil eye. God Bless You Ronnie James Dio🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

My teen years were spent with the same boyfriend. We basically raised each other, we were together from when I was barely 13. We went to see Dio and for some reason got into a fight before and I was devastated. I was really upset all through the concert and really didn't get into it, but I think I was 3rd row and my bf was 1st row and my best girlfriend was next to me. Afterwards, my friend told me that Dio was trying to get me to cheer up through the whole concert. She said he seemed really concerned. I don't know. As a teen age girl that was totally in the metal scene in the 80's, I sat front row for a lot of shows. My boyfriend and I would "camp out" (you know, back in the days when you had to actually be physically present to buy tickets) so we would be first in line. I had musicians pay attention to me, but it was always, "meet me back stage baby" kinds of vibes, and I never was that girl. But it touched me that Ronnie payed attention to me in that way. I think he cared about his fans and wasn't just about exploiting the scene. Ronnie James Dio, Randy Rhoads and Bruce Dickinson are the people I loved as a kid and have never been disappointed by. :)
