I body surfed pipeline feb 1981. All I can say is wow!!! It was so frikin scary and fun and just a real rush. Felt like I was fighting for my life. Best rides ever. Hit the reef and got a little bloody but it was so worth it that I did it a couple more times! Some weak swimming guys thought if I could do it so could they. LOL had to go out and help em in. Not bad for a haole girl.
I bodysurf and is fucking ROCKS! Keeps you fit as hell...mentally too. When young i "boogieboarded" but bodysurfing is a progression....more demanding and technical. Whatever gives you a kick...JUST DO IT
I mainly surf and bodyboard but I will occasionally go out to the local bodysurfing break (City Beach, Perth) for a few waves and it is great fun. You get so deep in the barrels and it takes a lot of skill to get in the right spot on the wave and have the right technique to keep your speed up and in control. Mad respect to these guys charging massive waves with serious consequences!!
There's a lot a negative and positive comments here. All I can say is, I surf and I bodysurf. Body wompin' is the first thing I did when I was a kid and it helped me become a strong swimmer and learn about ocean conditions and such. To this day, once in a while, I like to leave the board on the beach and just bodysurf. Either way, as long as your riding waves for the stoke it doesn't matter what your doing, its all good.
Yeeeeew! Just noticed Mike Stewart is in this vid. For those who don't know he is a legendary pioneer bodyboarder, kind of like the Tony Hawk of the lidding world.
it's a shame that bodysurfing isn't more popular. these guys are the best in the world and they have to pay for their flights and even to be in the comp while women surfers get payed for everything
@victorhugomuzi it's about the hate that goes on between wave sports. all of them are different with different types of skill in different parts of the evolution. none is better than the other.
why is is that people who are so called professionals at everything have to critique everyone's fun. damn..no one cares if you are good at it. these people are just having a good time.
somebody should make a forum about bodysurfing. i mean there are forums for all kinds of gaes but not for the sport, that gives you the best feeling of the world.
people hardly do spinners to get to the bottom of the wave. they do it for the people watching. its better to ride on the top half of the wave where most of the speed is especially at a place like pipeline.you stall out if you go straight to the bottom .i know from experience .this is my home break
hmm. That is true, but the technique is harder to be good at than you think. Sure its simple concept, but u need to be really good at judging waves, knowing when to lean forward, fall back, or cling to the face etc. Because when bodysurfing, details like that make all the difference. You have less margin for error while bodysurfing. oh i'm this alanimanimoepani fool. i changed my nick.
Not if you get deep in that barrel son! It's a f'ing rush! And no way of being more connected with the wave. Having surfed and bodysurfed, I prefer the latter at this point in my life. Hope you tried it out sometime in the last 14 years. If not, get some!
Bodysurfing is awesome and a great time. And that's what the ocean is all about, having fun.
