The ruling on music is dependant on what you define music is as well the nature of that music.
Depending on the definitions and the context: it can go wildly in one or the other direction.
And I know all four school said it is haram but how do they define music and under what context?
When (R.A.) tried to stop the use of music it was the Prophet who stopped him and Umar didn't forbid music when he could but instead went the other way.
The ruling pertaining to music is dependant upon the definition and the context. If you define music as any melodious sound then the Quran itself can be melodious.
