I usually watercolour but my sketching is weak, so my art teacher is helping my skill through charcoal, and I LOVE IT !!! Thankyou for the tips and info on what's what in this brave new hobby I've embraced.

I recommend clairefontain mixed media paint on paper in gris for a good toned paper. It is thicker like card which i do like and the charcoal goes on it very nice and it's smooth. I also use white charcoal on black paper....I recommend you try that....Frisk do a great black card...
My favoured charcoal pencils are generals.....
Also, the sand paper thing you said doesn't work well..I use that for cleaning blending stumps....
Correction: The sandpaper didn't work *for you* That could be for a variety of reasons, so don't state it like it's a universal truth. You could have gotten a shitty brand or chosen the wrong grit.

Hello Art by Louise. I think i have the same drawing and charcole pencils like you. I ordered a charcole beginner set from alliexpress and it came today. I am so happy whit this charcole beginner set. Before i drew whit graphite but i don,t like graphite pencils any more. So i wanted to try a charcole pencils. 👍🏾😁🖐🏾👏🏾 i use toned tan paper from strath more 400 serie,s

Please, have you used the Canson GRADUATE mixed media Grey toned (220gr) paper ? They also make it in "Natural" tone for Red Chalk(Sanguine) use, Their Grey is meant for Charcoal. I can't decide which to order, the Fabriano Clay or the Graduate grey....
