Developers don't really have to do anything right now, really. 64-bit adoption on X86 Windows is optional and is mostly unnecessary, unlike macOS. (Most casual apps are still up-to-date with 32-bit binaries.) If developers use it, they have good reasons to do so, mostly for performance reason. All existing ARM CPUs are not going to give enough power to drive 64-bit-only pro-grade software like Premiere Pro with any good experiences, especially after instruction translation. Microsoft intentionally left out x86_64 translation for ARM Windows because of this.

That's it. They don't flaunt their iPad to show how productive it is. A guy like me, who need productivity, who can carry around this thing and run an full windows is bliss. I work in power sector and need to run softwares which are designed for windows only. And there are hell lot of industries and softwares are made only on windows platform. You cant run those softwares on MAC OS let alone iPad pro. So, what's the use of iPad then. Microsoft marketed it as productivity tool not as high end gaming thing. It's not for that. iPad can't do and will never be able to do those things that a surface can do. I have used surface 4 and I can say it without a shadow of doubt its far far better deal then any iPad. Being an apply fan boy is okay but please don't compare apples with oranges.

Great product without usable software. It’s just another expensive paperweight. PS. As developer, I don’t see any Microsoft session about Windows on ARM.
As a developer there are lots of MS sessions and information about ARM. But with Visual Studio, compiling for or working with ARM is no different than Intel. For all UWP apps, you just tell it to compile for ARM. ... Done. If it's an x86 app, and an existing MS Visual Studio project, again just target ARM. Dave, I love the way you are doing reviews. Unbiased and honest. One thing I really do not understand: why wouldn't you recommend the normal Surface 7 pro tablet instead of the X (or even the iPad) which I admit, struggles with available software? Of course MS will have an update of the 'normal' Surface with the X design soon I guess.
I have serious doubts about whether he knows what he's talking about in terms of performance. It boots Photoshop 50% faster than the better model of the Surface Book 2 (which runs Win10), and the most critical I've seen another review be about emulated 64-bit performance is to say you'll notice it in a side-by-side comparison. edit: And in terms of support: if you're on Windows right now, open task manager and see how many applications are running in 32-bit vs 64-bit. Every single one of mine is in 32-bit right now. 64-bit exclusive apps are not common at all yet.
Long Live NC ??? Isn’t 32 bit app are limited to 2GB RAM? I’ve heard of mods that make you able to use 4GB RAM on 32 bit. I regularly go pass 5GB when using Photoshop or Premiere Pro so it is dealbreaker. Yes, majority of apps are not 64 bit because I assume most of them don’t utilise much RAM.
@@therift_7350 No, the standard limitation is 4GB on Windows 10, and just from some quick testing on my computer it only hits 1.2GB from a quick drawing on a 1920x1920 canvas. If it's going above 5GB on yours you either set it up to hog RAM or you're doing something far more complicated than the average user ever will.
I do art and wanted this for sketching and other creative pursuits. So I wish the front facing camera was 4K. Was hoping something from Microsoft like this would come out by April but would need to run Photoshop as well and other Adobe applications like Primere for video editing. Hopefully they pump out an upgrade to this one before then but that may be too hopeful.
Hi Dave, I will start by saying I am huge FAN of your channel. I was hoping to see you reviewing Surface Pro 7 as well and compare it with Surface Pro x and Macbook pro 13 inch from a Student perspective/ business professional.
Dave, your analogy about the Surfaces Pro X and the iPad in its early days is fairly accurate with the exception of one minor detail. The iPad was arguably a more different platform compared to iOS, whereas the platform here is the same Windows 10 we have known on conventionally PCs. Developers really do not have to do as much work to tailor their apps.. all they need to do is recompile them for ARM.. just like Android apps can run on x86 Android devices (mainly Chromebooks) and ARM Android devices (tablets and smartphones), so can existing Windows 10 (UWP or Win32) apps.. they just need a recompile and in rare cases some adjustments but Microsoft has made it really easy for developers to port them over.. it's all up to them (in the case of closed-source apps).
"as simple as recompiling on ARM" is definitely not a simple job. compiling to a different target that architecturally runs very differently is an enormous task. You could actually make the argument that Apple's method with the ipad and mac, Is the simpler approach for devs. Apple has written both iOS and macOS app frameworks. As a result, they don't even need to "recompile to a different architecure", It would be easier to write a translation layer into the native library designed for the target architecture. Essentially the app is being "re-targeted" at an API level, BEFORE being compiled into native machine code. also Android apps on x86 is actually much easier, as you are running risc instructions translated onto cisc hardware. Going backwards and running cisc instructions on a risc architecture already sounds like a nightmare with optimizations. As a crude analogy, if you imagine a risc cpu being a standard calculator while a cisc cpu is a scientific or graphing calculator. Then android apps (designed to be run on risc) is like doing simple math on a scientific calculator...it's completely overkill and it may not be optimized, and would waste power. Running x86 apps on arm would then be asking a simple calculator to solve calculus equations. it can be done, but don't expect it to as simple and fast as on a scientific where the hardware is ready for the complex task.
@@skifree0 Hey, thanks for your reply. This is exactly the kind of stuff I like learning about. I completely understand your calculator analogy and understand that RISC architectures like ARM are simpler than x86 CISC stuff. What I meant with Android apps is not emulation but rather, when a developer makes an Android app that has native code, they can choose to include binaries for the respective platforms (x86, x86_64, armv7, aarch64, etc.), thereby "covering their bases" in terms of hardware compatibility. Yes, there are probably instances where the code may need tweaking for a particular architecture, but it ensures that the APK can work with as many Android devices as possible. From my understanding, only x86 Android devices that run Android apps that do not include native binaries for x86 emulate the ARM binary within to achieve compatibility parity, because ARM is the dominant architecture in the Android hardware world, and yes, emulating ARM on x86 is easier than the other way around. In the case of Windows 10, I imagined that, assuming the app is written in a portable language (C, C++, C#) and not assembly, it could be recompiled with not too much difficulty, or am I mistaken?
They were very clear from the beginning that this device was not designed to run 64 bit applications, though it might in the future. Dave, I'm not sure if you have an agenda at play or not, but again I feel like you're not sure who the target of these devices are. This is specifically designed for creatives. I'm not sure who uses full Photoshop on their iPad, but Adobe promised full support (and you fail to mention this), Photoshop and most of the Adobe suite *will* make an appearance eventually but designed to run natively on this platform. Current Adobe suite is bloated garbage that can be easily replaced by less featured but far superior (performance wise) software on an iPad. You simply could *not* run Adobe trash on iPad hardware because it's a bloated mess and that is entirely why its taken so long for them to port it
Microsoft needs to collab with DMX next time so they can learn how to give it to us

To optimize an app for Windows on ARM is not as hard as many people think, the developer already have the source code written for windows environment and in most cases they just need to re-compile it with different settings. This is much much easier than having an Android app and make it work on iOS, which would indeed require re-writing large portions of the code from the ground up.

As a teacher, i love my surface pro 4. Upgrading to a surface laptop 3 now just cos it worked out cheaper than buying the pro 7. But I think you are right. Depending how you'll use it makes a surface worth it or not. For average people using it as a tablet or laptop neither are really worth it, too expensive when you could get something cheaper that does the same thing. but for things like teaching its a godsend. Its light, easy to walk around the room with, good on battery, simple to use and has connection ports for projectors etc where most schools do not support apple products at all.
Respect for the DMX reference. Title caught my attention right away.

I've been using a Surface Pro X for 8 or 9 months or so and I love it. All this video is showing us is that you apparently can't read. Because the product page clearly tells you that the Surface Pro X wasn't made for CPU intensive tasks such as graphics or audio editing. And here you are: complaining that it doesn't do graphics editing very well. Ya, duh! Exactly what it says on the product page. But if you use it for what it was designed for and you got yourself a massive Office workstation.

Everyone: windows on arm is the future!
Developers: *no*
Developers don't really have to do anything right now, really.
They just did it cause when Apple does it in 2022 flawlessly and with full app support because they tell their developers a year early to port their apps they can say "BuT wE DiD tHaT FiRsT ApPle Is JuSt CoPyInG"
@@PhilfreezeCH Apple have earned the muscle to encourage developers. Microsoft have been churning out unfocused shite for decades. Why would any developer listen to Microsoft?
@@NDakota79 oh like they did keyboards and iOS13 updates flawlessly? give me a break. Just because Apple does something dead last, doesn't mean they perfect it. Their Mac keyboards are still utter garbage and you can't even set default apps in iOS or iPadOS. They are last in the race AND do it badly 😂
@@PhilfreezeCH Seeing how they took 9 years to *_"BuLLy"_* Adobe into making a mediocre version of Photoshop for iPad, even though it was perhaps the first app people thought of when Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPad, I have little faith in their ability to pressure devs to do anything.
I hate to say when every other device needs to be compare with Apple product to show its worth.
What can an iPad pro do.. umm.. well you can play games and may be do some "video editing" (which no one does except people who are in tech industry). 90% people use this for RUclips or Netflix.
It’s interesting seeing RUclipsrs review these things. On one hand they do a great job benchmarking. On the other, not everyone does video editing, photo editing, full on Adobe etc. He says the productive user is a niche user? I don’t think so. This thing should handle the basics like classroom and office needs no problem and are probably majority users.

Leon Leon yeah but honestly the only good tablets are Samsung and Apple. Don’t get me wrong, I have an iPad Pro 11” and 16” MacBook Pro, so I like Apple products, but the Samsung TabS6 is way better than the surface pro for half the price and it’s really close to the iPad Pro as well

I really like Microsoft's charging port. There's no way to accidentally yank the cord and break the cord and/or the port. That can be pretty common. I have a surface laptop. Bought it for the 3:2 display. No regrets for sure. Had it two years.

D-D-D-D-DEALBREAKER

Hopefully they pump out an upgrade to this one before then but that may be too hopeful.
It doesn’t? 🥺
They're idiots for trying this ARM crap again and again ...
The only selling point of Windows is legacy apps and x86.

Checking out you solid clean cut reviews is good not only IT good but also brain good👍👍
They were very clear from the beginning that this device was not designed to run 64 bit applications, though it might in the future.
