Could you imagine being a 5 year old boy in Cleveland back in 1957 and seeing an NKP S-2 Berkshire go past you just that close? I did, and it's still a fond memory 55 years later. What I wouldn't give to sit in the cab of 765 just once before my time on earth is done.
Very impressive and enjoyable sight to see two preserved steam locomotives of the same "Berkshire" class double heading together on the same train, it's a pleasure to see steam engines operating in the modern era and this is a special representation of historic railroad operations during the 1940s-50s of the late stage steam era.
Friendly reminder to all people criticizing the "mass pollution" these locos are creating that: 1. This is a photo charter, this is being done for the cameras and are only being done in 30-90 second intervals 2. Most steam locomotives (at least in the US) run on oil now (some even on waste veggie oil). 3. These types of locomotives aren't a major pollution factor, they haven't been since the late 50's. There are, however, thousands of cars on the road and factories around the world that pollute way more than these.
Oh, man! Fabulous sights, and fabulous sound! Esp the near perfect synch in the two driver sets during the side-by-side. Those guys have to be tops to do that! The NKP Road ran just west of the town line in my hometown growing up (Oberlin, OH). I got ride my bike out that way more or less anytime I wanted to and watch loco's like these for as long as they ran them on that line. I loved seeing all this then, but didn't know how totally special this was, once it all became memories. I miss steam!!
I just remember steam too as a tiny 3 year old boy in Northamptonshire in 1967 watching 4-6-0s on passenger & 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s on freights:-) Magic stuff:-)
I have been in the cab of both of those locomotives, the 765 is housed just about 7 miles from where i live, in Fort Wayne Indiana, When i moved to Fort Wayne in 1983, the 765 was sitting in a park, just rusting away, It wasnt long after they took her out to newhaven In, just east of Fort Wayne, and restorded her.
I have always said I hate modern steamers but good god this is the best steam show ever: no diesels with a mix match consist, nothing around to take away from that ww2 era feel, no flickering as seen in old films of trains in the 50s, authentic sound. A steam fan's best friend
@@markmccastle7932 just so you know, these locomotives are way cleaner than any combustion engine that's powered off gas or diesel. Most of it is just steam and a little bit of coal cinders, which btw, coal cinders don't cause a greenhouse effect whatsoever.
Damn I almost miss doing that! ( ha ha) Double headers could be a challenge sometimes , and took a fistful of orders, but once you got the two of them running good, it gave both engineers a good feeling.
There are giant coal powered plants, millions of trucks & auto's, garbage in the sea, and people seem to ignore it. But when 2 rare steam locomotives operate, *THEN EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MINDS!*
No one's "Lost Their Minds" here. When you liberals come up with a fuel source that's capable of moving commerce in an manner which matches steam, Let us know. Corn and wind don't seam to be getting it done! Maybe you guys can figure out a way to strap a solar panel on a locomotive of tractor trailer. We're waiting...
Power plants are boring, you cant see anything happening there unless you work there. Nothing cool about trucks or cars either, as they are a common occurrence, as is garbage in the sea. They need to take care of that garbage, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. So yeah, when steam operates people go crazy as it is a very rare occurrence & awesome machinery of a bygone era.
@crazy7997 That thick black smoke will give you a good idea of why New York and some other passenger stations banned steam locomotives in their terminal. The smoke often got so thick that visibility was reduced to the point that collisions occurred, resulting in deaths. As a result, electric switching engines were put to use, pulling the passenger cars in from a transfer siding outside of town. Cleveland had such a transfer point on the New York Central main line called Linndale.
Boy the environmentalists will have your ... for that smoke! Just be sure to make a lot more of it. At 1:38 - what a shot. AND you're pulling frieght. WONDERFUL At 2:34 - it couldn't get much better unless you were running besinde 4014. I would hope that if all the people in the USA could see this - locomotives in steam would come back big time.
When i was four or five (which was A Long Time Ago) i stayed with my grandparents during the week, and the NKP main was across the street. Used to see these beast running in actual revenue service in those days.
Yes they do, I know for a fact the 765 out of FortWayne IN, goes out on runs several times a year, I go out and help work on her every now and then, the 765 is housed out East of Newhaven IN.
I hate to debate you but according to the allen county rail road historical socity, they put her into running order for the rails by 1979 they started work back in 1975 or so to get her running again. I have seen her as you can see from my videos.
+DieselElevators Steam locomotive smoke is darn near harmless. Most of it drifts down to the ground and goes back into the soil, whereas diesel smoke is one of the most carcinogenic substances on earth.
So the dark smoke is all of the coal being shoveled in to get more steam? And both (excess?) steam and exhaust come out from the same stack? It seemed liked more white was evident in the second locomotive which I assumed was steam. Just trying to learn.
The smoke stack also roars the fire up. It sucks air in the fire (and smoke plus steam gets out above. At full speed the fire burns hotter so there is less carbon particles in the exhaust. (More CO² but most of it is water vapor (steam is invisible))
A majority of that smoke is steam (water vapor) Carbon is also being emitted, Carbon is good for plant life. The Smoke (steam) being emitted is minuscule when compared to Volcanoes and the various plants in China/India etc
About the smoke... Is this quantity/darkness normal? I used to think the only engines to raise the global temperature by 2 degrees on a single run were the South-African steam engines modified to run on bunker oil.
@@henryochoschinski6317 indeed. I work on an old steamship as an engineer and the sights and sounds are amazing. Long live steamships and steam locos!!!!
+thenatnatboy There actually are regularly scheduled trains still using steam power, but most of the places where this happens it is a short line or preservation railroad that happens to have some actual cargo going through it. Most of the time when you see a steam locomotive pulling a mixed freight, it is either because the engine is on its way to a tour in another city and they might as well put some cars behind it, or because of a planned photography run to show the engines working with the loads they would have originally pulled. Although 765 today pulls passenger coaches for tours, she was originally a fast freight locomotive and would have pulled mixed freights today handled by SD40-2 and Dash9 diesels.
I was out to the home of the 765 last firday, 3/23/12, she is in the shed, for some repairs right now, they are doing work on the stoker motor, spring shakles, and water pump, or injector, the took the tender off, and pulled it up and down the track with their switcher engin, to grind some flat spots off two of the wheels, i have some video of that i will put up on my chanel soon..

the sound is unreal. I played it twice just to listen to it again, ok yes I did look at it too. lol
Both of these engines were built by the Lima Locomotive Works. The 1225 in 1941 and the 765 in 1944.

It's mostly steam and coal dust, which falls out of the air fairly quickly.
That smoke is acrid! Are these oil-fired?
