I am restoring a 1929 steam powered popcorn wagon on a 1929 Chevrolet truck. It was in daily use until 1985. Every part of it is like your slotting head - full of unwanted surprises. I know your sinking feeling as you disassemble your slotting head and discover how someone with little knowledge, skill and tools tried to fix something. The good thing is we can fix things!

I’d call your state in this video, “Up to your arse in alligators.’’ The whole saying goes, “It’s hard to keep in mind that you just set out to drain the swamp, when you’re up to your arse in alligators.” Good luck with the swamp max. Always enjoy your videos.

The world would be a better place if we could just prevent hand tools getting into the possession of these neanderthals. I just bought a knee mill - and the idle shaft on the belt drive is bent - just like the armature in your video. Exactly what goes through the minds of these gorillas is beyond me. Really enjoyed the clear presentation of the straightening approach. 👍👍

Another great video Max. Never saw us going down that particular rabbit hole at the start - but like any good Jack Russel , chasing rabbits down rabbit burrow holes is what we are born for.
Not gonna lie, while all these “deviations from the plan” aren’t exactly what you had in mind for the day and video, they are actually highly instructive in how a sh!t show can be massaged back into just a sh!t sandwich with a little patience, the right approach and the right tools & equipment.
It’s worth putting in the time & effort to get that “unknown quantity” slotting head up to a standard where it’s again useable & reliable for future projects.
Every old machine you resurrect, increases the capability of your shop and what future projects you can tackle with what you have available.
I’d say you likely have another year or two ahead of you yet licking all those old cast iron machines into acceptable shape, but with your skill set and equipment, that’s half the fun.
There’s plenty of blokes would just rip out the check book and play merry hell with a big stick & break things buying new gear (me included occasionally), but we’ve all seen these ATGANFI (All The Gear & No Feckin Idea) come & go with regularity when they get their ambitions confused with their capabilities and go belly up.
You won’t be one of those sad fools.
Stick at it, each problem overcome is another step forward. 👍👍👍🇦🇺

They had one of those Sykes-Pickavant 'hydraulic' pullers at Honda dealers I worked at, didn't look very big but was 15 ton.
Russ had it at max pressure trying to get flywheel off CX500. I came in through workshop door, pulled it closed and I guess vibration through floor was enough for it to 'let go'.
Puller and flywheel went up in the air, over my head, bashed hole through ceiling then landed behind me.
We were really lucky no one had their head over it (the three techs were a few minutes earlier)
When using sealed bearings on motorcycle wheels, I used to remove 'inside' seal to reduce friction, outside one was left as an extra to keep grease off brakes.
Those motor shafts are pressed into lamination's, spent a couple of years making electric motor parts, worst paying was single point turning cast iron 35mm bearing housings, best was machining welded up stators before they were wound, bad welds showed up pretty quick.
Nice job straightening, half thou could be in the bearing?

      @swanvalleymachineshop  2 месяца назад

Thanks . Lol they should have left the nut on , just unscrewed a couple of turns ! I would have welded & re machine the shaft as a next option if it did not want to straighten . I have seen them pressed out before for replacement but have not done one myself . Cheers 👍

But does it matter if it’s a good bull, or a spent worthless except for tough hamburger bull? At the beginning I saw something that I couldn’t help but comment on….before removing a heavy item, it’s always good to have a stable waist high surface to place it on. Learned that years ago, and forget every bleeding time I pull some dreadfully heavy anyfriggen thing off 😢. Every time! Not at work, just at home. Max, I am really enjoying this bang it out philosophy that you practice. Get Er Done a somewhat famous comedian here is famous for 😂. That is a fine puller! 😊

Hi Max, I for shure hang around to watch You go thru this.
You gave me some good ideas for my own shed I have in the attic. It very much sucks to have to carry everything up and down but that´s the way it is. I do bycicles and sometimes they are butchered up, too...
The common ground is "little knowledge, skill and tools try to "fix" something". That fits ev-ry-where. And guys like us have to cope with.
If they´d leave it be, just accept it´s broken and leave it, don´t try anything stupid, we´d be off way better.
And I admire Your measuring stuff. I quickly learned that it´s even harder to find good used measuring equipment for a reasonable price that it would be to dig up tooling or materials.
Have a nice day and wish You well.

Max must be really good mates with the electrician. I learnt long ago that non-electrical chaps who try to reduce what I can charge (which in itself is ok) or to "help" me by disassembling it "ready" for me, make the job more difficult. In fact, I generally refuse to take the job on if it is already partly or wholly disassembled.
In the case of the shaper, it is probably the case that the motor would not turn because the contactor failed on one phase, but it could be some other fault.

But the one I got seems to be in nice condition and is a genuine Bridgport made one.
Just need to make or buy some tooling for it now.
The real adapter bracket is a tight sliding fit around that machined section on the back of the ram, the clamp bolt just flexes it enough to make it not move.

Same in the UK for any electrical work on your house, your limited to very basic work, mostly like for like replacements.
I'm not actually sure about working on machine wiring, from the state of many used machines I have had the standards of the electrical work has been poor, things like 3 phase power lines left bare ended and flopping around lose in junction box from where a coolant pump had been removed, many wires pinched by metal covers being carelessly screwed back on, blown fuses bypassed with bits of wire, earth's not connected or relying solely on the armor wires in the cable to do it, which is fine until they rust or the gland undoes and pulls apart.

Is the electrical work illegal there if you do the work because it is a business or is illegal even if you were working on your own home?

I'm in a different State to Max but assume his would be same as mine...it's illegal for anyone other than a Licenced Electrician to do electrical work & THAT work gets a certificate issued by the "Sparkie", because should there ever be an "electrical fire", your Insurance wont pay out if that certificate can't be produced.

You have to be licensed . If anything untowards happens related or totally unrelated , insurance will not pay out . 👍

I don't mind fixing wear and tear, but having to go that deep into someone else's hack job is unacceptable. It's bad when things would be in better shape if they didn't even try.

God I hope my slotting machine was repaired by someone who knew what they were doing. If you need pictures of the tooling I have let me know and I’ll take some pictures of the cutters and send them to you. Cheers, Bid
