- Following the win over Fiorentina in the final, West Ham chairman David Sullivan revealed Rice had played his last game for the club, confirming that he had turned down the club’s offer of a new contract worth £200,000-a-week 18 months earlier, and that he was promised he could leave.
And with Arsenal heavily reported to be frontrunners for his signature, it looks increasingly likely that he will be working under Mikel Arteta in the 2023-24 season, with a fee of over £100million is expected to get the deal done.
But how will Rice fit into Arteta’s side? And how will Arsenal need to adapt with him in the midfield? On today’s episode of FD Explained, we’re heading to North London.

Declan is a must sign for Arsenal and Thomas Partey should remain. 20M for such a player is ridiculous. We need both because of depth . Either can start while the other sub....also we shall be having so many high level games

Rice has a cracking shot on him, the only reason his goal tally is as low as it is is because he has lacked a coherent partner, he has had to stay back due to Soucek’s poor form. With the freedom he’d have in the Xhaka role his tally will double

Now that we finally got Rice, a fantastic addition to the squad, I think the only missing piece would be a perfect and fiercy finisher upfront. Someone that can match the Haaland's profile at mancity and I believe the only person suitable (or even more) for that role is no other person than MBAPPE. I'm well aware of the cost implication but I just hope Arsenal can find a way to pull it off. Just imagine having someone that can bring the same amount of goals Haaland gave city last season. Trust me, we'd be having the return of the INVICINBLES

The Havertz signing is really throwing me to be honest. Think it's clear he hasn't worked as a false nine, plays best supporting the striker, but then where does Odegaard come in, will Arteta drop Partey for Rice and employ a single pivot? Very odd move imo

That’s what I’ve been thinking. It sounds like he wants Rice to be a 6 and Kai 10 while Martin stays at 8.
Havertz will play the left 8 role with Rice as DM with Zinchenko and Timber inverted in his left and right respectively. I think this is the plan. This will choke most teams with possession in their half, and without possession a solid 5 man defence.
I feel this question is best aimed at man city as they will decide when they don't win anymore it seems

Completely different players so I wouldn’t compare but the importance of a great defensive midfielder should not be underestimated and I think Rice could be a great fit for Arsenal
Hes a fantastic player but he simply has no experience being as advanced as xhaka. I seem him better as a party replacement then play with him,
I agree with that, he won't replaced Xhaka's forward contribution. I had hoped to see Arsenal gain both Rice and Caceido however, on reflection the strategy of Rice and Havertz makes a lot more sense with respect to shoring up DM/Partey with Rice and then shoring up Xhaka's departure with Havertz. Put that way Arteta's signings seems to make a lot of sense and equally Chelsea will be keen to off-load Havertz to free up funds for signings eg Caceido.
@@commentarytalk1446 respectfully, if you are going to sign someone to replace xhaka, you could spend 50-60 mill much better on someone else then someone who has literally never played Xhaka's role in Havertz
@@hazemore7192 Yeah I think Arsenal would do better going for a direct striker and putting big money into that eg Muane. However I don't think Havertz will emulate what Xhaka has done this season. I think Rice/Havertz will be used in a more dynamic system by Arteta.
Havertz will be used to rotate with the other forwards more. I'm guessing Rice/Partey/Jorginho will rotate in midfield depending on the opposition/fitness.
Artetat seems to know what he's doing so we'll see how his approach pans out, he does seem to get more xG out of players than when he signs them.
The so called Xhaka role came into full existence in 2022/23 season, Xhaka has never played that role in his whole career so why do you think an energetic young player like Rice can’t do the Xhaka role to even a greater effect?
@@ezekielehimare2414 Arsenal have suffered on Counters, so Rice is really a combination of pushing higher than he does at West Ham and sending progressive passes (before that his dribbling out of defence is about top in the league?) but being able to run back and either intercept or tackle quickly to counter the counter-attack (better than Xhaka). So he'll probably contribute more in offence that at West Ham being higher up more, but equally he'll be critical for transitions for Arsenal to reduce that damange counter stat. IE he has the complete package in midfield that Arsenal needs. The forwards will likely rotate flexibly in front which is how Arteta likes to attack eg Havertz fits that style more than a direct striker might.
As such I think the so-called Xhaka role will change/be adapted with these signings.

Never a 100 million player, such a outrageous price for a player who's worth around 50 at the most. He's not a bad player or anything but it's a bad deal and if he doesn't do well, it's a massive loss if they want to sell him and it'll end up being a Harry Maguire situation at United.

He is always fit. That is huge. However, Arsenal genuinely need to pursue other options and even sign a midfielder before Rice, if they are to convince WHU to lower their price. The market is ridiculous, 80-100 mil floated about for every decent player. Clubs gotta be diligent and patient and conservative if they aren't to financially ruin themselves long-term TBH.

Just look at how partey this season would make Arteta feel sick. He always misspassed, lost a few times in aeriel duel and some of the arsenal GA is due to partey fault
