How To Fix Noisy Squeaking Squealing Disc Brakes On A Bike
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- I show the steps to repair the squeal on a bicycle disc brake. The most common cause of screeching disc brakes is dirty, contaminated rotors or pads. Usually cleaning them will solve the problem. But if the pads are contaminated with oil, then the pads will need to be replaced.
I often get asked what can be used instead of alcohol. I do not know. Isopropyl alcohol is the most thing to use to clean bike disc brakes. There are some specialized bike disc brake cleaners such as Finish Line Bicycle Disc Brake Cleaner. www.amazon.com...
Anything else, may or may not work. Anything else, may or may not ruin your brakes. Do not use automotive brake cleaner. It may ruin your brakes.

Thanks a lot
Can't you use a mini blow torch to boil off any oil that may be in/on the brake pads? Shame just to throw them out because of a little oil.
My discs say use resin pads only on them , and I don't know if the previous owner used resin or a different pad , will this be causing the excessive squealing ?
I just got my wife into mountain biking, and I converted the wheels on her new bike to tubeless (didn't go smoothly). When I put the wheels back on the front brake squealed like a banshee. It was unrideable. I watched 3 videos on how to cure it and your video looked the most reasonable for my situation. I followed the steps you outlined exactly and now it's quiet as a mouse. Thank you so much!
@Jim Ratzlaff
Are they still quiet?
@@zachtrapper2398 as a mouse 😊
How about now?
@@jonahnichols2158 by now it is probably quiet as "The Mouse That Roared".
Mice squeel? 🙃
When sanding the brake pads, lay your sandpaper on the work surface and rub the pad on the paper. The way you do it can more easily lead to an uneven brake pad surface.
Better yet use an old surface plate/granite flat for the flattest result! Or even put the pad down on a surface grinder and take a light pass with a diamond wheel!
I actually just poured a bit of isopropyl alcohol on the caliper and went for a ride, worked pretty well. The squeal doubled in intensity for about 2 minutes but it was fine after that. The friction from braking and the air from the disc spinning must have helped to dissolve the contaminants and dry it out.
Cleaned the rotors and pads as suggested and sanded the pads too, and now no more squeal, thanks RJ‼️🚴♂️
This video solved my problem. Remember to do the break-in, after 25 to 30 break cycles the noise disappeared and the breaks started breaking much better than before.
My brakes were perfect before I removed both wheels for truing. Put wheels back on and had the turkey gobble on rear and slight squeal on front. Found this video, removed and sanded pads, cleaned rotors with acetone. Brakes are now perfect again.
This is awesome! took my rear breaks from a loud shriek down to a very manageable whistle ! thanks for the tips!
damnnn 🤔 mine sounds like a whimpering puppy 😲
The shop I work at we lightly sand the rotor and pads, douse in rubbing alcohol and burn both the pads and both sides of the rotor for about a minute. This method works pretty much 90% of the time except if the pad is basically dripping oil because they do absorb it.
yeah i've saved some oil soaked standard shimano pads by soaking in alcohol overnight then setting a light then a sand with 800 wet/dry paper. Worked fine.
How do you burn these pads, if they are resin based? Wouldnt that ruin them?
Instructions weren't clear. I went to my garage and lubed my discs.
I don't stop anymore.
hahaha

Me just realising that I lubed my brakes when going 69420mph down the road
My shoes😥
Life saver, my rear break was as loud as a trumpet, until I applied rubbing alcohol to where it is silent. Cheers my guy 👍🚴❤️
Just cleaned my front rotor. No more squeaking at all. Thanks mate!
Also check the rotor and look for its wear limit. Magura rotors for example has a limit of 1.8mm. if its thin like below 1.8mm then you should replace it. Worn rotors can produce a squealing noise also
If they’re contaminated with oil, you can cook ‘em. I cooked mine til they stopped smoking and they’re as good as new.
How would you cook them? Do you mean w a blowtorch or something else?
Blow torch
I used a gas stove
How did it taste
I mapped brake-squeak complaints to dewpoint (bicycle mechanic for a small fleet of riders/bicycles). On a parallel note; noise is a biproduct in the conservation of power (energy). [remove the noise = remove the power]
After watching many videos on this topic with various degrees of success I found a reliable solution for getting rid of squeaks.
1. Lightly sand the pad surface by rubbing them on a flat surface. Do not do anything else to the pad. Do not touch them at all. Anything more will not make them cleaner than virgin pad material.
2. Clean the rotor with iso- alcohol. Saturate a clean cloth and clean the disc lightly. Clean with the wet cloth but do not rub hard. Let the alcohol evaporate. Do not rub with a cloth as it may transfer any chemicals or soap from the cloth to the disc.
3. Reassemble without touching any of the cleaned surfaces. Be careful not to touch the clean surfaces even with rubber gloves on.
This worked for me after everything else failed. Finger oil, fabric chemicals, cleaning sprays all add something to the mix. Avoid them. No bedding in will be necessary. Quiet from the start.
It goes without saying that a glazed disc, or oil soaked pads will require extra attention.
I was stupid for using oil, thanks for the help!
I wish i found this video before i went flying down the driveway into the back of my wife’s car.
Sound's fun ahahahha
Could be worse, could have been the back of your wife's boyfriends car 👍
I have Shimano pads and rotors on my bike that squealed like crazy. I tried all of the things in this video and even replaced the brake pads, but same thing. I took it to my local really good bike shop and they said their trick is to also lightly sand the rotors as well. They said this creates very tiny grooves in the rotor that don’t affect braking but prevents the squealing. I’m not sure if that’s true but I haven’t noticed any difference in braking power and the squealing has been gone for hundreds of miles now.
dknight211 Same thing applies to automotive brakes. Usually you want to do this with new pads and rotors.
Rotors tend to glaze over time. That means they get polished like a mirror. Because of that the pads slip instead of bite. Also check them both for any wear. The thickness of the rotor has to be at least 1.5mm. If its less than that the alloy core of the disc is being used as a brake surface, instead of stainless steel (not all of them have this kind of construction tho...).
When you sand a smooth surface like a rotor, which is what the pads are supposed to do it makes it rough not polished.
There's a product called SwissStop Disc Brake Silencer that you spray on the pads after they've been cleaned. I've never used it myself, but I know a few riders who swear by it.
I get both pads and put washing up liquid on them. I rub them against each other which kind of sands the surface, then I rinse and dry. With disc brakes I recommend sticking with organic pads because, sintered/metallic pads can develop a surface of rust when wet which causes squealing.
Earl Grey washing up liquid is a lubricant
MTB Scotland Thats why I said you should rinse the pads after. It works very well though, I learned it from a RUclips video.
Earl Grey won't sand anything. Just take any surface oil/grease off. I had terrible issues with sintered pads and had to sand them frequently but organics are best for pretty much everyone
This video helped me out a bit found out how dirty my one disc brake was.
This will be my job for the weekend.
Thank you for the clear processes of troubleshooting my brakes and the bicycle dad joke!
Magnets to hold in the disc pads, that's great.
Seems dangerous to me.
@@dooleh84 I got them on my comuter bike, And in the 2 years I've ridden them haven't had an issue. (the pads are removed from the bottom against the travel of your rotor and are impossible to get out with the rotor in place)
The pads are still supported by the body of the caliper. The magnets simply replace the clips to retract the pads from the rotor when you let off breaking and tend to work better than clips.
I’ll sell you some I’ve got the same ones but I replaced them with tektro aquila’s 😂
Tysm dude that sound was like on my bike for a week and i was so annoyed by the sound i fixed it now thanks.
Thank you show much sir.god bless you.but hydraulic break noise fix
The rubbing alcohol worked, thanks
I'll try this and see if it would help my squeaky brakes
Simple and worked! Easy, 20 minutes of work. I have shimano alfine and have squealed since I bought them, ug, made the bike unrideable.
I have a front that was squealing and i did a flush and bleed of the fluid and that fixed it. I don't think the pressure was ever 100% on that bike from new.

I've really got a problem with my dog says a guy to his neighbor, he'll chase anyone on a bicycle. Hmmm what are you going to do about it? asks the neighbor. I guess I'll have to confiscate his bicycle"

Noah Dodge I saw a flash of full screen text but, I can't make out what it says. What does it say?
Noah Dodge Thanks.☺
I just spent 5 minutes trying to get to this. I found it, and then checked the comments. How silly of me. Should've checked the comments first!
Jamie English i did a whole 10 mins of searching
It doesn't matter how long you search, the joke doesn't get any funnier.☺
Thanks for the tips, the torch truck worked great!
Sand the discs to remove old pad material.
Sintered or semi metallic tend to squeal no matter what you do
I use the dollar store orange cleaner degreaser like the one that you showed in a previous video
Rotor cleaning works. Thank you
Great video. What do you think of Tektro discbrakes in general?
If you go throught the trouble to "deglaze" the pads, you might as well chamfer the leading and trailing edge of the pads as well. It help a LOT!
Novel idea, something we always adjusted on rim brakes to avoid squealing, the pad camber. I am not happy with the 25 years of technology, or lack thereof, we have endured disc brakes in the cycling industry.
Squeaky clean...Nice job
5:44 The text flash says: "I've really had it with my dog," says a guy to his neighbour. "He'll chase anyone on a bicycle." "Hmmm, that is a problem," says the neighbour. "What are you going to do about it?" "Guess the only answer is to confiscate his bike!"
thank you, i was curious about that.
Thanks man this made me laugh how it actually worked. I even had the same rag you used.
i would love to see that dog on his bicycle........ great video man
I have avid db1 on a mid range mtb. Stock pads on a cheaper shimano rotor. Rotors are bent slightly. I must be have broken them inproperly. I have sanded down and cleaned the pads and rotors many many times. My previous bike ran the same type of setup and had no noise. Now I have full power for my brakes. When I apply light pressure, sounds like metal on metal squealing like when car brakes get low. Then after I apply a little more pressure, the squeak goes away and then a noise, almost like when a car hydroplanes. It is such a weird noise and the bike vibrates a little as well. Everything is right. Center lock rotor.
Good ol turkey gobble?
I think I'll be doing this soon. I got hit by a taxi and I thought just the wheel got bent so I straightened it immediately and here it is a long while afterward I just discovered my rotor is slightly bent in one area. I'm seriously wondering if this nickel and diming stuff wouldn't be avoided just by replacing the whole front of the bike including the fork and all. Or maybe I'll just get a new wheel set.
Juan Ignacio yup, turkey gobble. It sucks
Some people recommend anti-seize at the back of the pads, who knows, I have not tested it...
So what your getting is basically chattering brakes. That can be caused by either the spacing for the Caliper isnt correct causing offset pads. The rotor isnt properly made at the factory and has a rough side (no beveled edges for the cutout portions on the disk face). I've personally seen that happen to 3 avid brake setups at my shop and other rotors. In most cases though its best to just get a new rotor.
Great video
What should you use if you don’t have rubbing alcohol
Thank you for this video! So helpful!
To remove Glazing use 200 to 400 grit sandpaper definitely nothing less
"I've really had it with my dog," says a guy to his neighbour.
"He'll chase anyone on a bicycle."
"Hmmm, that is a problem," says the neighbour.
"What are you going to do about it?"
"Guess the only answer is to confiscate his bike!"
I'll stick with rim brakes thank you very much. Disc brakes are too finicky btw which do you prefer cable actuated or hydro brakes
Actually they aren't finicky. And good hydraulic brakes are better then mechanical.
I prefer hydro over caliper myself. The squeeze is much smoother and easier than calipers.
Hydro, for sure.
I've really had it with my dog,
Says a guy to his neighbor.
"He'll chase anyone on a bicycle."
"Hmmm, that is a problem," says the neighbor.
"What are you going to do about it?"

Great vid! But still the rear brake squeaks now & again😢
In my case, I do not hear squeaking noise when braking is applied while riding. but it occurs if braking is applied while the bike is pushed. Should I not mind, as we nomally do not aply braking while pusshing a bike. Why does this happen? In the latter case, wheels are pullled back. This problem happens for both front and rear wheels.
Very informative. I'll try it.
This helped me so much thank you!! Keep inte up bro🤗💸
As usual a very helpfull video - thank you.
I don't have rubbing alcohol and I can't go out rn pls tell what I can use which is already at home to fix it which
Not saying I'm going to subscribe to thank you very informative on how to calibrate and clean my disc brakes on new to disc brakes I'll wait no one better and I'll share thank you
Good info on squealing discs - thanks, I'll give this a try! On another disc brake issue, when rotating the wheel, one spot on the rotor will rub up against one of the pads. It appears the rotor is slightly warped. Could this enter into the squealing problem? And, if the rotor can be straightened - how do you do it?
Could be. Rotors can be straightened some. Better to replace it.
Ive gone and done all of these steps and such and saw how dirty they were, but they are still squeking but just not as much
I did the cleaning stuff again and bedded them in much better and now i can do stoppie and lock back wheel but it squeaks not as much but right before it
Hi, can I use regular shimano degreaser I'd use for cleaning a drivetrain?
Thanks I’ve fixed my bike 🤩
I tell my friends that I have squeaky brakes to keep the bears away. We live in the UK though...
damnnn 🤘😁
Remove pads hit briefly with a blowlamp then sand off dust, done it many times
Great video forgot all about cleaning disc and pads. To get pads out of Shimano hydraulic brakes you need to remove a cotter pin. So far so good. Trying to get separator spring aligned with caliper hole AND two pads and The cotter pin takes a jolly good time. There is no adjuster. Magnets holding pad is awesome. Shimano’s suck.
I saw that joke that flashed on the screen for one frame by the way! heh.
Thank you
Changed the brake pads front & back and problem solved until it started raining😂Front disc mega noisy but the back one quiet..weird. The noise is embarrasing & ruins my enjoyment of my rides..then i've begun to hate my bike for it!😆👎😂
okay i got it thanks
Really very helpful
Does vodka work as a substitute for rubbing alcohol
My brake pad likely need to be replaced, could that be the issue? Or the sqealing is unrealeted?
220 sand paper works best for me.
I bought brand new electric bike 1900$ and breaks do this sound why wtf ???
Does this work on a momas e bike? Mine became loose and i ended up crashing and bending the front fork
It works on noisy disc brakes. If the disc brake came loose, that is a different issuse.
Is the break supposed to squeel while bedding in the pads?
I haven't had that. ruclips.net/video/i0KB7VeriNM/видео.html
Is that advisable that i use sandpaper to clean my rotors?
No it is not.
Sir I want my roadster vintage bicycle to make modernize
I get noise in the rear when i brake but only when i ride very very slow. Bike is 4 weeks old only. What can it be?
Thanks man you just helped out a lot
Thanx mate
thanks for this, having probs ! ordered some alcohol, do you ever do work on ebikes? I love them, but they can be such a pain to work on....
No I haven't worked on ebikes.
I just watched a different video saying that car part brake cleaner is the best thing to use
Imagine this from the opposite way round, 'I'm trying to learn to play my disk brakes like a musical instrument but as soon as i start to get good at it, the brakes bed in and they go silent'
Just go on a long ride and don't be shy on the brakes, they'll bed in just fine..
And now i know whats the problem when i put some oil on my cassette the oil drop on the disk but i dont know how to take my break pad we have different pads i cant pull it?
You will have to find instructions for your specific brakes. It varies.
What would u recommend to stop the squealing if it’s a brand new bike right out of the box?
Wait at least a week for bedding in period. Its common for new bikes
Why does OP think the bike industry just has all these “manuals” with “instructions” on how to:
1) remove particular brake pads
2) properly adjust your brakes
3) clearly printed torque specs for anything
Lots of them are available online.
@@RJTheBikeGuy they really are not. I promise
5:43
5:44 thanks
thanks man
Liberally lube the rotor to reduce any squealing.
It's been a few years so I hope you don't mind me revealing the subliminal joke you had in there:
"I've really had it with my dog,"
says a guy to his neighbor.
"He'll chase anyone on a bicycle."
"Hmmm, that's a problem," says the neighbour.
"What are you going to do about it?"
"Guess the only answer is to confiscate his bike!"
Can we use petrol for cleaning
Good evening
Could I use car brake cleaner to clean the disk and pads please
Thanks
I recommend alcohol. You are on your own with anything else.
@@RJTheBikeGuy
I am sorry I didn't understand
Can I do it or not please
I don't have alcohol
Alcohol is what is used to clean bike disc brakes. Anything else may or may not work. May or may not ruin your brakes!
some brakes just squeel. At least that sound works as a bell, to alarm pedestrians :D
2:00 you need to smell it first, then clean the rotor
My Shimano mechanical disc brakes squeal and also don't have enough bite to them, can't even lock the wheels. Any solutions??
Go back and watch the video.
Nice video
I bought a trek, rode it and the rain and it started to squeak. I took it to them to get it cleaned and it still squeaks. 😔
I am wondering what could be going on with the Caliper, if I have done all this and evern replaced my rotor, but still an awful sound! What could the caliper be doing wrong?
Did you replace your pads? Are they installed correctly?
Did all that, didn’t work for me. Decided to upgrade to decent rotors + new shimano pads and problem fixed. I think those cheap rotors were the problem, I had tektro as well.
Did you try a different brand of pads?
RJ The Bike Guy after dismounting pads and rotors and cleaning them, I got new shimano pads but the noise came back. Then upgrade to shimano rotors and problem fixed.
