How To Fix Noisy Squeaking Squealing Disc Brakes On A Bike

  • I show the steps to repair the squeal on a bicycle disc brake. The most common cause of screeching disc brakes is dirty, contaminated rotors or pads. Usually cleaning them will solve the problem. But if the pads are contaminated with oil, then the pads will need to be replaced.
    I often get asked what can be used instead of alcohol. I do not know. Isopropyl alcohol is the most thing to use to clean bike disc brakes. There are some specialized bike disc brake cleaners such as Finish Line Bicycle Disc Brake Cleaner. www.amazon.com...
    Anything else, may or may not work. Anything else, may or may not ruin your brakes. Do not use automotive brake cleaner. It may ruin your brakes.

      Can't you use a mini blow torch to boil off any oil that may be in/on the brake pads? Shame just to throw them out because of a little oil.

      My discs say use resin pads only on them , and I don't know if the previous owner used resin or a different pad , will this be causing the excessive squealing ?

    I just got my wife into mountain biking, and I converted the wheels on her new bike to tubeless (didn't go smoothly). When I put the wheels back on the front brake squealed like a banshee. It was unrideable. I watched 3 videos on how to cure it and your video looked the most reasonable for my situation. I followed the steps you outlined exactly and now it's quiet as a mouse. Thank you so much!

    When sanding the brake pads, lay your sandpaper on the work surface and rub the pad on the paper. The way you do it can more easily lead to an uneven brake pad surface.

      Better yet use an old surface plate/granite flat for the flattest result! Or even put the pad down on a surface grinder and take a light pass with a diamond wheel!

    I actually just poured a bit of isopropyl alcohol on the caliper and went for a ride, worked pretty well. The squeal doubled in intensity for about 2 minutes but it was fine after that. The friction from braking and the air from the disc spinning must have helped to dissolve the contaminants and dry it out.

    The shop I work at we lightly sand the rotor and pads, douse in rubbing alcohol and burn both the pads and both sides of the rotor for about a minute. This method works pretty much 90% of the time except if the pad is basically dripping oil because they do absorb it.

    Also check the rotor and look for its wear limit. Magura rotors for example has a limit of 1.8mm. if its thin like below 1.8mm then you should replace it. Worn rotors can produce a squealing noise also

    I mapped brake-squeak complaints to dewpoint (bicycle mechanic for a small fleet of riders/bicycles). On a parallel note; noise is a biproduct in the conservation of power (energy). [remove the noise = remove the power]

  • @jimbarron8688

    After watching many videos on this topic with various degrees of success I found a reliable solution for getting rid of squeaks.
    1. Lightly sand the pad surface by rubbing them on a flat surface. Do not do anything else to the pad. Do not touch them at all. Anything more will not make them cleaner than virgin pad material.
    2. Clean the rotor with iso- alcohol. Saturate a clean cloth and clean the disc lightly. Clean with the wet cloth but do not rub hard. Let the alcohol evaporate. Do not rub with a cloth as it may transfer any chemicals or soap from the cloth to the disc.
    3. Reassemble without touching any of the cleaned surfaces. Be careful not to touch the clean surfaces even with rubber gloves on.
    This worked for me after everything else failed. Finger oil, fabric chemicals, cleaning sprays all add something to the mix. Avoid them. No bedding in will be necessary. Quiet from the start.
    It goes without saying that a glazed disc, or oil soaked pads will require extra attention.

    I have Shimano pads and rotors on my bike that squealed like crazy. I tried all of the things in this video and even replaced the brake pads, but same thing. I took it to my local really good bike shop and they said their trick is to also lightly sand the rotors as well. They said this creates very tiny grooves in the rotor that don’t affect braking but prevents the squealing. I’m not sure if that’s true but I haven’t noticed any difference in braking power and the squealing has been gone for hundreds of miles now.

    • @briteidea08
      @briteidea08 6 лет назад

      dknight211 Same thing applies to automotive brakes. Usually you want to do this with new pads and rotors.

    • @stilianivanov3377
      @stilianivanov3377 6 лет назад

      Rotors tend to glaze over time. That means they get polished like a mirror. Because of that the pads slip instead of bite. Also check them both for any wear. The thickness of the rotor has to be at least 1.5mm. If its less than that the alloy core of the disc is being used as a brake surface, instead of stainless steel (not all of them have this kind of construction tho...).

    • @abdelkaderbennaoum3882
      @abdelkaderbennaoum3882 5 лет назад

      When you sand a smooth surface like a rotor, which is what the pads are supposed to do it makes it rough not polished.

  • @steve.b.23
    @steve.b.23 6 лет назад +1

    There's a product called SwissStop Disc Brake Silencer that you spray on the pads after they've been cleaned. I've never used it myself, but I know a few riders who swear by it.

  • @earlgrey1492

    I get both pads and put washing up liquid on them. I rub them against each other which kind of sands the surface, then I rinse and dry. With disc brakes I recommend sticking with organic pads because, sintered/metallic pads can develop a surface of rust when wet which causes squealing.

    • @MTBScotland

      @@dooleh84 I got them on my comuter bike, And in the 2 years I've ridden them haven't had an issue. (the pads are removed from the bottom against the travel of your rotor and are impossible to get out with the rotor in place)

    • @snakerstran9101
      @snakerstran9101 4 года назад +1

      The pads are still supported by the body of the caliper. The magnets simply replace the clips to retract the pads from the rotor when you let off breaking and tend to work better than clips.

    I have avid db1 on a mid range mtb. Stock pads on a cheaper shimano rotor. Rotors are bent slightly. I must be have broken them inproperly. I have sanded down and cleaned the pads and rotors many many times. My previous bike ran the same type of setup and had no noise. Now I have full power for my brakes. When I apply light pressure, sounds like metal on metal squealing like when car brakes get low. Then after I apply a little more pressure, the squeak goes away and then a noise, almost like when a car hydroplanes. It is such a weird noise and the bike vibrates a little as well. Everything is right. Center lock rotor.

      I think I'll be doing this soon. I got hit by a taxi and I thought just the wheel got bent so I straightened it immediately and here it is a long while afterward I just discovered my rotor is slightly bent in one area. I'm seriously wondering if this nickel and diming stuff wouldn't be avoided just by replacing the whole front of the bike including the fork and all. Or maybe I'll just get a new wheel set.

    • @dropzonedigital
      @dropzonedigital 6 лет назад

      So what your getting is basically chattering brakes. That can be caused by either the spacing for the Caliper isnt correct causing offset pads. The rotor isnt properly made at the factory and has a rough side (no beveled edges for the cutout portions on the disk face). I've personally seen that happen to 3 avid brake setups at my shop and other rotors. In most cases though its best to just get a new rotor.

    Imagine this from the opposite way round, 'I'm trying to learn to play my disk brakes like a musical instrument but as soon as i start to get good at it, the brakes bed in and they go silent'
    Just go on a long ride and don't be shy on the brakes, they'll bed in just fine..

    And now i know whats the problem when i put some oil on my cassette the oil drop on the disk but i dont know how to take my break pad we have different pads i cant pull it?

      You will have to find instructions for your specific brakes. It varies.

    What would u recommend to stop the squealing if it’s a brand new bike right out of the box?

    • @Johnapacible6352
      @Johnapacible6352 Год назад

      Wait at least a week for bedding in period. Its common for new bikes

  • @adamschmidt4688

    Why does OP think the bike industry just has all these “manuals” with “instructions” on how to:
    1) remove particular brake pads
    2) properly adjust your brakes
    3) clearly printed torque specs for anything

    • @RJTheBikeGuy

      Lots of them are available online.

    Liberally lube the rotor to reduce any squealing.

    It's been a few years so I hope you don't mind me revealing the subliminal joke you had in there:
    "I've really had it with my dog,"
    says a guy to his neighbor.
    "He'll chase anyone on a bicycle."
    "Hmmm, that's a problem," says the neighbour.
    "What are you going to do about it?"
    "Guess the only answer is to confiscate his bike!"

      Alcohol is what is used to clean bike disc brakes. Anything else may or may not work. May or may not ruin your brakes!

    I am wondering what could be going on with the Caliper, if I have done all this and evern replaced my rotor, but still an awful sound! What could the caliper be doing wrong?

      Did you replace your pads? Are they installed correctly?

  • @alfonsolizarazo9806
    @alfonsolizarazo9806 6 лет назад

    Did all that, didn’t work for me. Decided to upgrade to decent rotors + new shimano pads and problem fixed. I think those cheap rotors were the problem, I had tektro as well.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy

      RJ The Bike Guy after dismounting pads and rotors and cleaning them, I got new shimano pads but the noise came back. Then upgrade to shimano rotors and problem fixed.
