I have a few items from Purdey including the shoes, the filed coat, jodhpurs, tattersall shirts etc. They are extremely durable and the attention to detail is great. One thing about the boots though is that you have to break them in. You really don't want to wear them on a day shooting straight out of the box. With that type of artistry and richness of history of these firearms, I would want to feel how it feels shouldered, how the check weld feels, the weight/balance, the smoothness of the mechanism. But still a beautifully presented and incredibly explained video.

A British friend had a great influence in my bird hunting proficiency. He introduced me to the 'butt, belly, beak, bang' method that he learned from his grandfather on his estate in N. Ireland in his teen years. I learned to follow the bird and smoothly swing from the rear of the bird and follow its flight and when you swing past the beak you fire continuing the swing which creates a string of shot the bird flies through. Before I was just trying to shoot the head which had me stopping my swing as I fired.
I've been bird hunting in the US for several species since I was 8. I'm now 30, and I have never once heard of this technique; thank you for commenting this, I'm going to use this to help my son learn.

First of all, thank You for the video. Excellent insight into one of the top English gunmakers! Personally, I'm more into long range target shooting than hunting, however I absolutely LOVE the quality of the Purdy range of products. They really are art, but also displaying the natural beauty of premium quality wood and steel. The quality of them puts them in a very strange category.....TOO beautiful to use, for fear of damaging them, yet it really would be a crime to NOT use them for their intended purpose!
I was thinking... man with the likely low volumes, all done by hand with over 900 man hours these have got to have a hefty price tag. Of course its high but its even higher than I imagined. Prices according to a 2006 article have their bespoke side by sides starting at over 89,000 dollars! The damascus finish shotguns look absolutely incredible.
Damascus is when you take several layers of metal and you forge weld them together to create a pattern and it creates a really really good durable and strong material
Very fascinating. I just got into shotguns and trap shooting. He's very knowledgeable about his calibers and even checked to see if a round was chambered before handing it to you. I believe the 16 and 20 gauge are popular in the United States now but everyone who owns a shotgun has a 12. This is my first introduction to Purdey. I would shoot it a lot and put this on display in my home.
It was the British who popularised both firearms and the wearing of suits in the first place so the only crossover is that the Americans come to England to find out how real gunsmiths manufacture firearms.
I am a bit confused by the section looking at the Purdeys clothing. I understand that they would want to promote that part of their brand, and I have no issue with you sharing that, but it does seem a bit weird for you to buy a load of their clothing if you were already having the bespoke suit made.
I don’t think he purchased these items this time. I’d bet this is a borrow type arrangement, and as the pair of guns he will be using is still for sale on purdey’s website.
@@jonathanedwards8913 Good catch! Model 27933-4 (can verify the tag at 41:12) still available on Purdey's website for 110,000 GBP at the time of this comment. That would be a major purchase even for a huge gun enthusiast, and such a price tag is probably worth more than Kirby's entire shoe collection. A lending arrangement makes everything make sense again haha.
I have a matching pair of Purdy's; unfortunately it's a pair of paint brushes. Boy those are some beautiful weapons! I knew that their shotguns are fantastically ornate, but had no idea they did rifles like that too. Fascinating and enviable. Thank you for showing us this unique facet of British culture, Kirby. So when are you going on the big, dangerous game hunt? 😅
Wow. The engraving portion was mind boggling. Saying 180, up to 400 hours on a single gun’s engraving! That’s just unfathomable. Thank you so much Kirby for highlighting these absolutely talented craftsmen/craftswomen.
Excellent episode, Kirby; I have visited that shop and it was akin to a candy store! Owning a brace of vintage Purdys is something I am sure you will enjoy. BTW the best wet weather field boots are Le Chemeau in natural rubber, lined in leather. Excellent and not clammy.

My dad had 2 side by sides which were his dad's because my grandad was a game keeper so my dad inherited the guns i remember cleaning them when i was showed by my dad when at an early age of 5 i would sit with him and showed how to keep them cleaned then i couldnt wait for him to come home so i could clean them until my dad passed away I was gutted I had to sell both of them because I didn't carry a license so thankyou for an another amazing episode can't wait to see more 👏
A Section 2 [shotgun] certificate is very easy to obtain, especially if you live in the country. The fact is, if you can show use, you cannot be refused a certificate unless there are mitigating circumstances, such as a criminal record or history of unreasonable behaviour.
Note to self if I walk into a gun shop in England and there is a cellist playing in the back ground. I probably can’t afford to buy anything in there. Lol

The quality of them puts them in a very strange category.....TOO beautiful to use, for fear of damaging them, yet it really would be a crime to NOT use them for their intended purpose!
I could completely see Kirby with a 1949 AK-47 😊
I love that they are actually into the idea of shooting them and not just shelf queens
It's now 2024, and you can convert that figure into pounds and add 11,000 - depending on the engraving, of course.................
Suits and Guns, the greatest UK/USA crossover!
That is true
It was the British who popularised both firearms and the wearing of suits in the first place so the only crossover is that the Americans come to England to find out how real gunsmiths manufacture firearms.
What a great detailed story about Purdy & Bros. Great video and always looking for more of your adventures with friends. Love the suit. 10 stars
Thanks Kirby. I will very much look forward to seeing that. All the best.
You don't need all of that stuff to enjoy life "properly" :) That said, this was very well written and artistically executed production. Congrats to you and your team.
The quality of your videos is consistently great Kirby
Unique series. Top quality. Feels like Christmas watching this.
Finally. The channel I’ve been waiting all my life for.
Best series ever keep up the good work
My dad had 2 side by sides which were his dad's because my grandad was a game keeper so my dad inherited the guns i remember cleaning them when i was showed by my dad when at an early age of 5 i would sit with him and showed how to keep them cleaned then i couldnt wait for him to come home so i could clean them until my dad passed away I was gutted I had to sell both of them because I didn't carry a license so thankyou for an another amazing episode can't wait to see more 👏
A Section 2 [shotgun] certificate is very easy to obtain, especially if you live in the country. The fact is, if you can show use, you cannot be refused a certificate unless there are mitigating circumstances, such as a criminal record or history of unreasonable behaviour.
"No one more synonymous..." I think Holland&Holland might want a word. 😁
Thank you for taking us on this journey.
Fascinating video, held my interest the whole time.
Absolutely stunning episode! I wish you featured their double rifles as well, but it great anyway.
Note to self if I walk into a gun shop in England and there is a cellist playing in the back ground. I probably can’t afford to buy anything in there. Lol
Especially if they hired a musician like Yo-yo Mah.....
those heritage shotguns are a casual 110,000 pounds... ~$140,000US.
@HalideHelix 😁
A tremendous series of videos, many thanks
I know the feeling having one, I am a proud owner of a newlookalike 1899 Watson Bros best sidelock.
I just love the old style of Purdey guns and rifles, very classic.
Good day, Kirby,
Allow me to felicitate you on such superb work. Loving this series and the filmmaking is exceptional. Great work by you and the team.
I was waiting for this episode so longingly.
I thank you for giving us a glimpse into your life.
Best wishes
Allow me to politely indicate to your idiotic mind. You unwittingly believe this ham is legit. You should concentrate on yourself instead of focusing your attention on frauds.
I have to agree with the other comments. As far as content within an individual video, this is top notch!
Very interesting Kirby loving this series, keep up the good work
OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY.... this has only just come into my RUclips feed/suggestions. Very nice, thank you for your time and effort making these videos.
they must be the most beautiful boots i have seen, the fit and finish of them must be perfect.
Had to watch this twice it was so good.
