That was very detailed. Mine had a CAN bus failure codes when it was new. It was just a connector that didn't get properly seated. The wave reflection part was good. You should do one on exhausts. Motorcyclists hold onto many myths. One is exhaust "back pressure." When you're trying to evacuate a cylinder of its contents, the last thing you want is back pressure at the exhaust port. What you want is the pipe tuned to provide a properly timed reflected wave to stop fresh charge from leaking out during the valve overlap. HDs used to run 2 into 2 exhausts. They have that old school sound that I associate with Harleys. Hardly ever hear it anymore. Problem with them is they don't have that "scavenging" reflected wave front and have a dip in the power midway thru the rpm range. They usually do make better peak power than more modern 2 into 1 pipes though. As we street riders don't normally ride around WFO, so making the power more linear thru the range with the 2 into 1s is the better option. Although they do kill that cool old Harley racket. Fun story. Many moons ago I had to whip up a PCI motherboard for a project. Those actually used a diode termination. Weird as you normally terminate in a transmission line with its characteristic impedance in the form of a resistor. Anyway, that was how those PCI designs were specified to be terminated and it works. Don't remember if I ever figured out why though. Water under the bridge at this point I suspect.
I am hoping to change my indicators on my XL 883 R SPORTSTER 12 (2012) to LED, getting mixed info on simply using a load equalizer but nothing if mines has the CAN BUS system, how do I find out if mines does have it and if it does how can i fit LED turn signals ?
Hi Alf, I was checking parasitic draw in my 2017 Softail and getting some strange numbers. Does the CAN bus draw current with the ignition off? Thanks. Jim W. Orangevale, CA.
Yes there might be some but you may need to check how much you’re losing too. I think from memory 20mA is for the security system but not sure on the numbers off hand
hi, i had to replace the burnt odometer on my 2009 harley electra glide. the new odometer started at 00000 and i have already driven 1500 km. do you have any tools and wiring to restore the original kilometers to the new tool?
If your bike has a BCM then I believe it will have to be matched to that before it shows original km so try to find a workshop that can do that for you
Alf that was really good thx, sounds like you have some prior electronics experience. Can you point me to a source of Harley tech info pls, my m8 softail has a "buserror" i'm trying to find? I fixed the speedo fogging and created another problem. thx.
Hi Richard and thanks. OK did you have a error code of U0001? Did you disconnect the instrument module to drill the holes without first removing the main fuse? If this is the case then all this means is that the can bus system has detected a break in the continuity of the system when power is still applied. What you need to do is clear the error code first and see if it repeats. If it does then the next step will be remove the instrument module again and make sure that the connector is not damaged or any of the pins are not bent etc. Let me know how you get on. Cheers
@@RevelatorAlf thx Alf, yes I was too lazy to remove the fuse first . . . I just pulled the speedo console off the bike where I could get at it. The fogging speedo was driving me nuts. I have checked speedo harness data lines, gnd, for continuity back to dlc and +ve back to pwr fuse and all good (with wiggle test). So I haven't damaged the harness at least. The pins in the speedo connector are all straight. But I can't get into "diag" mode. I'm holding mode sw then pwr. I've tried both together, mode first for 1, 2 secs etc but no diag. It seems to do "wow" but lcd reads as usual and cycles through usual run modes. Then when I switch it off it takes usual 5 secs to kill power and after another 5 secs the speedo leds flash very briefly. Bike is riding normally but now I see "vinerror" or "buserr" occasionally. Any ideas?
BMW has had the CAN BUS system on its bikes for some years. I know from experience that the system can be very sensitive to electrical modifications on the bike, amongst other things. Thats why I was surprised to see so many mods on CAN BUS equipped Harleys, performed by home mechanics.

A hundred years from now you will still be teaching someone
our thing H-D.
Because you
Explain it so well.
Ah bless you pal. Cheers
Been looking for this information, thank you. This video deserves more views then it has. 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks great comment. Yes I’ll certainly be looking at that in the future too. Cheers
Very informative. What if I have BUS error come up on my screen
That poor kid in the background lol wow ! I learn something with every segment you produce. Another thumbs up 👍
What obd protocol does the Sportster models 07-13 work? Is it CAN H or CAN L?

Thumbs down for not actually showing anything-at all. Would have liked to have actually seen where the twisted pair is located
I was just thinking how great it would be to have a tool like the motorscan, thanks so much for the video.
Glad to help cheers
Yesterday during a huge 600+ bike rideout my FXLRS broke down. Can bus troubles. Tomorrow I will bring it in at HD
Oh no what a bummer
Nice and informative video, thank you!

Well that was clear as mud to me :D
They don't make it easy to learn that's for sure
Can it be removed completely? And the bike still run? Just rewire the bike?
No it’s the whole system

buS er that is what is showing up on my odometer. My bike 2008 FLHT will start and run a few seconds and I have no power to the fuel pump fuse. HELP

Yep lots of the electrical mods are because new components for Harleys are Can Bus ready and will just plug in
Easy peeze , it’s also known as serial link, we use it in the elevator (Lift) trade .
Yes indeed they are. Cheers
Can fuel tuner cause Error code
Can the fp3 cause a error code
So you CAN BUS home when you have broken down with a totally over complicated wiring system unfixable at the side of the road.
It,s all Welsh to me but thanks anyway,i was ok with a carburater and it,s needles but now i leave the laptop stuff to my dealer.
Totally with you on that one and that has pretty much killed off the home mechanic or customiser in many ways too
@@RevelatorAlf Yes indeed .
None the wiser .
WHAT YEAR DID HARLEY START USING CAN BUS….. NO PLEASE. DONT REALLY PROVIDE THE MOST BASIC INFO
