Great explanation of CANbus Eric! I do miss simpler times but, I do enjoy onboard Diag on most modern vehicles. Makes trouble shooting much easier. Especially when it will provide parts #’s like HD does.
There's nothing wrong with that. Hopefully, you have a better understanding of the happenings of your bikes wiring system now. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I know diddly about my Indian’s electrics / tronics. But I had the presence of mind to have a daughter who married an electrical engineer, so all is well. We (he) will be installing a Denali Sound Bomb air horn this spring to replace the OEM beep-beep. Loud horns save lives, Eric! P.S. When I read Canbus, I wondered if there might be smoke on the horizon. 🤔😅
It's a mess for sure these days. It's good to know when you're over your head and time to call on someone who knows what to do. I hope your horn serves you well.
Thats great info. When I was looking to add fog lights to my bike, messing with the CANBUS had me concerned. I get it now, and am glad I did not go cheap, Thanks!!
Good info Eric. I’ve never thought too much about it but I do know in the Jeep world (and Can-Am world), people are often having problems with added accessories causing voltage issues.
Hopefully, you know now. This is a boring video to watch, but I feel the info is imperative for folks to wrap their minds around. Thanks for watching, RJ.
My 2018 is old school. My 2007 BMW uses the Can-Bus. The Pan America is CanBus as far as I can tell. Only has one Main Fuse block. I think that is why people run into issues with it, the electronics are temperamental on it.
Hello mate, sorry haven’t been able to catch with your videos lately, life gets in the way some times. Thank you for the info. My GSX is so far out date but still love it and it’s only 4 years old. Take care and stay well. You are correct it is a high tech world now 😎
Don't ever apologize for not keeping up with my content. I'm subbed to 400+ channels, and i can't keep up with them all. I appreciate you stopping by, even for just one a month. I love what you're doing with your content. Keep up the great work!
Your Spyder has CANBUS, and from what I've read, many folks have problems hooking up accessories with it throwing codes. Any future electrical accessories I would check to see if it's CANBUS compliant. Thanks for watching Jody. :)
Thanks for posting this. I always thought the CANbus system was only for the CAN-am brand of bikes, not the newer models of all bikes or cars. I've been warned multiple times about adding aftermarket accessories to the Spyder. Now, it makes sense. Thanks again.
I hope it was informative. This is a dry, boring topic but needs to be said. When I see folks posting on YT hacking into their CANBUS wires, I just cringe. 😖
@Kraken's Garage & Adventures I am guilty of tapping into a power source for brake flashers, headlight modulators, and blinkers. The Spyder has an auxiliary port, but I think I will put a dedicated fuse block if I add any more mods.
Thanks Eric. I learned a lot from that... I had never even heard of CANBUS before today... As a buddy of mine always says "if you wake up dumb enough, you learn something new every day"... Haha. I cant believe they want $200.00 for a battery charger... Anther saying comes to mind there... Something about a fool and his money??? haha. Keep up the great work making fun and informative videos...
This is why I laugh when people mock my electric bike. It's like dude, they have more electronic gadgets on a harley than I do.....and it won't even run without that...............BATTERY. hahahaha !!! Informative vid, man !! Cheers !!
Yeah, my Beema has a CANBUS system. The merit plugs are great, they clip, so the plug won't rattle off like they do with normal power plug. I have a CANBUS appropriate battery tender. Good info, Eric. Ride well. Cheers
Interesting topic Eric, it looks like the CANbus (Controller Area Network) almost behaves similar to a traditional OSI model. Most bikes of today are pretty much a computer on wheels.
Like most things, its a good and bad for a home mechanic and user. IF you have the service manual and diagonstics tools, canbus can be nice to track down sensor issues. But, if you don't have that stuff, and you are on the side of the road, not much you can do about it.
Agreed. Very few have the code reader. So it's somewhat problematic. Tech videos are boring, but I felt this one was helpful for many. Thanks for atoppung by Dewey.
I put a Daymaker on my 06 Dyna a few years ago. I’ve been riding around with the low voltage light on since. S&S makes the controller I have to fix the problem. I just never got around to it. I never dove that deep into the whole setup. Great video. Very informative.
It also allows many bikes to be Dyno Tunes without the need for an external tuner. On my Aprilia race bike I had to use several bypass modules that trick the computers into thinking everything is connected, like the head light, tail light, side stand switch, etc etc
I never thought about a track bike and peeling off all the lighting messing with the CANBUS. 🤔 I have to say, every one of these off the beaten path topics I present, you, sir, are on point. Thanks for stopping by.
Well Eric, you just reinforced why I do not like to play in the Spyder electronics sandbox, I'm worried the Spyder will go into Defcon-2 sending out codes to begin preparations for a possible nuclear conflict 😵🤯🥵 The spaghetti pic did have me craving some pasta though 😂🤣 Very nice message. You better understand what you're messing with, or you'll mess things up 😁👍👍
Ugh. Electrical stuff makes my brain itch. Thanks for the enlightenment though. It reminds me not to fiddle and instead pour cash into a technician’s pocket!
Very well exaptational of how that all works. Doing mechanic work on cars/trucks I have been able to understand all of this. When i do work on my old school stuff part of me like the simplicity but then part of it is scratching my head on where to start.
It's really hard to cover a complex topic like is in say 8 minutes and get your point across. I took a swing at it and I hope it helps a few folks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I had no idea this is how it worked - consider me now educated. The systemiser in me thinks it makes logical sense to standardise this stuff. The romantic in me misses the unique characteristics developed between each bike. I guess I'm just that old school mind that visualises it as wired and relays, not comptuers. I've been reluctant to mess with the wiring on my bike thinking that way - now I'm infinitely more reluctant to do so. Very interesting vid Eric, cheers.
Great video Eric ! Wiring and electrical stuff are one of those things we don’t think too much about it until things go kaputt. Insightful perspective amigo. Thanks for the enlightenment. Cheers 🍻
Another great episode from you. Very informative and always engaging to the viewer. We have a lot to learn !!!! Thankyou again for bringing such information to our attention.
Sooooo, My bike (2015 Indian roadmaster)Runs fine acts fine but I was looking at my VCM and the CAN HIGH pin in the VCM was burnt and broken....soo what the heck? Wouldnt something not work if that happened. Everything seems to be working fine.
Kevin, in my mind, it shouldn't work. Do any of your friend have a code reading tool to see what it says? Maybe next time you have in the shop, have them check it out. Ride safe.
That was pretty interesting, I knew there were issues when trying to use aftermarket accessories, but wasn't aware of the Canbus being the culprit. I almost died when you said "question mark", the first thing that came to mind was, Joe Biden 🤣🤣🤣

I agree, if you're on point with the diagnostic, it's easy street to repair. Thanks for stopping by Sean.
great video that no one ever checks when they have an error!
When you purchase a used bike, the Amazon hacks on bikes are one of the first things I look for. Thanks for stopping by Ben.
The only thing I know about electrical on my bike is to plug the battery tender up when battery is weak. 😎👍
That’s already too much😜
There's nothing wrong with that. Hopefully, you have a better understanding of the happenings of your bikes wiring system now. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Really interesting Eric. Thank you for sharing this
I hope it was informative. Thank you for stopping by.
Great information Eric. Thanks for sharing this for those that don't know. Ride safe and enjoy. 👊👊✌️
I hope it's somewhat informative to a few. Thanks for stopping by Rick.

100%, both you're Harleys have CANBUS. I hope you have a better understanding of what's going on now as you mod your bike. Thanks for watching, Cue.
Thats great info. When I was looking to add fog lights to my bike, messing with the CANBUS had me concerned. I get it now, and am glad I did not go cheap, Thanks!!
I'm glad you have a takeaway from this video. It honestly will cause so much grief in your moto life, Jerry.
Good info Eric. I’ve never thought too much about it but I do know in the Jeep world (and Can-Am world), people are often having problems with added accessories causing voltage issues.
can am puts in undersized batteries in most of their stuff. so you change one thing and it freaks out.
Hopefully, you know now. This is a boring video to watch, but I feel the info is imperative for folks to wrap their minds around. Thanks for watching, RJ.

You're 100% correct, Peter. This is usually the main cause for error codes popping up on today's bikes. I hope it was informative for a few.

Interesting with the trickle down effect...I had no idea what canbus is before this video🤷♀️

@@KrakensGarageandAdventures will do... Thanks, Eric!
great break down man. I wonder if the motorcycle world will just kinda move to the next tech and bypass this all together
At this point on the game, that wouldn't be a bad idea. Thanks for commenting, Ben.
Don’t forget the second and biggest advantage of led lights is extra intensity lighting.
That is true! LED lights have such a huge improvement over incandescent. Thanks for stopping by.
Some great information Eric, hopefully save someone some dollars on their bike 😎
Hopefully, this video is informative for a few. I see so many hacks on YT butchering their bikes. 😖
Thanks for posting this. I always thought the CANbus system was only for the CAN-am brand of bikes, not the newer models of all bikes or cars. I've been warned multiple times about adding aftermarket accessories to the Spyder. Now, it makes sense. Thanks again.

Hey Eric. Thanks for the information.
I hope it was informative. Thanks for watching Larry.
Great video there Eric!!✌️✌️🫡

Truth! There's so much trch in today's bikes. It kills me to see hacks work on them. Thanks for commenting, Randy.

This must have been very boring for you as you are well rehearsed on CANBUS. I hope this video was informative for a few. Thanks for stopping by, Moz.
@@KrakensGarageandAdventures Never boring, Eric.

Indeed they are. I see so many hacks posting YT videos on Amazon mods to their bikes. I just cringe. 😖
I worked on marine diesels with this technology. All I can say is electronics & salt water don't mix.
Salt water will attack any wiring system to no end. Marine diesel must have been a fascinating career. Thanks for commenting.

Starting to get my health back underneath me and will be discussing the Neutrino box hopefully by tax day.
I wish you nothing but the best on your recovery.
At first glance I thought this was “Cannabis and Motorcycles”😂😂😂😂
You're about the 5th person to say that. Ganja bros all over this!

Great info Eric. The more we know about our bikes the more we understand them. Take care ✌️
Tech videos are really boring to watch. That said, this breaks down a critical issue on our bikes. Thanks for the kind words.
Today’s technology is truly amazing ! I remember why I was able to adjust the timing of my VW beetle by hand !
Indeed, so much has changed over the decades.
Nice to know. Thanks Eric!
I hope ot was informative Ray. My tech videos are boring to watch, but helpful to others.

great info brother !! hope your out chasing today . were in a winter blizzard warning till sat :-( hahaha.
Blizzard! ❄️ Dang! I'm sorry to hear this, and hopefully, it will be warming up soon.
I guess I should be happy that I'm at the age now where I keep my bike's mostly stock except for the seat.
As a result, you have zero issues with your bike. I would argue you're the smartest man in the room.
Oh ok

yeah way to much tech on alot of these bikes now.
I have to agree, and it pains me to see hacks posting on YT messing with this stuff.
