  • Today we’re looking at a super cardioid dynamic vocal microphone, the Sennheiser E945. This thing has a very clear and detailed tone with flat mids and tamed low end if you’re using the mic at a distance.

I just bought the Shure SM58 to compare with this mic, and the Sennheiser was clearly SUPERIOR in vocal reproduction, in every way. It had better highs, mid tones, and bass notes, and at least 3 decibels louder at identical sound levels than the Shure. Although the Shure would be fine for live performances and hard use, I'm choosing the e945 for the overall sound quality.

    • @ChaunceysBailey

So for recording vocals in an open studio setting you would say the Sennheiser over the Shure?

Don't get me wrong, I love my old Shure. It sounds great, and is tough as nails. But for recording, definitely go with the Sennheiser. The Germans didn't almost win the war for nothing:)

I have a Sennheiser 935, which is basically the same mic as the 945 with a wider pickup range. My bandmates have Shure Beta 58s …. which are a step up from the regular 58s. And the Sennheiser sounds much better.

the review is spot on, as always! In a busy live mix this is one of the best live mics , I prefer it to the sm Beta 58. My voice is a a soft Baryton. But it's not the best mic if you voice stands alone like in a voiceover situation etc. or maybe semi acoustic jazz then I to would prefer something a little more relaxed, like its forefather the first version of sennheiser md431, but it cuts ! I use it while playing guitar but you need to stay in front of it though not as close as to an Audix om 7 or a Crown cm 310A, and its good at suppressing feedback but not as good as the om7 or Crown CM310a. And i too think you gotta watch out for sses and plosives, that seems to be an issue with modern sennheisers?

Holy bloody sh*t. Great demo man. As great as the vocal demo was, my fave part was how great it did with the acoustic. Obvs Taylors are amazing anyway but that showed that this is a really great cover all mic. I agree with the cab sound, although it sounded better than even a 57 has for close micing cabs. Maybe I'll bring it out of my live box for a couple of sessions. Thanks for the vid!

I highly recommend this microphone, it's definitely made for the stage. However, I use it just to scream at dorks online in HD. I also have surround sound speakers, and can play music / whatever else at a decent volume and this doesn't pick up anything. If high enough volume, it may pick up a scent of what's in the background but you'll never hear it at the time / voice activation programs can be adjusted to not broadcast certain decibels etc.

Hi, I'm a fan of your channel. I have a question. I play harmonica, and i use Shure Beta 57A & Behringer UM2 for recording. Is there any condenser microphone within $80, which may make my audios better? Actually, as my instrument is a high pitch one, i need a microphone which gives a better low, i mean better bass. Because my instrument is a heavy bright instrument, i always have problem with controlling the treble.
Another query, if i buy Neewer NW700 or NW800, will my tonal quality degrade or upgrade? Thanks ❤

Not quite right, your bass can be controlled via your soundmixer which I imagine most people use one for these mics since they're XLR. I use the Sennheiser E945 with a Mackie ProFX8v2, and I customize the finer sounds for the mic with that mixer.

Thanks for this because I am currently looking for a supercardioid. In your opinion, which is the best for off-axis rejection because I want to record vocals whilst playing and recording acoustic guitar, and thus need as little bleed as possible? My current cardioids are useless, but the SM57 is actually okay. My budget is approx. £200 GBP / USD. I am also looking at the Shure Beta 57A, but perhaps you have better options. Thanks :)

I compare this to Sennheiser's versions of the guitar cab mics they offer : the e609 and the e906. the e609 is basically the same principle as what you get with the e935. for the extra cash with the e945, it offers a wider frequency that you can tailor to your specific needs at the eq of your console or virtual console OR simply put a mic foam windscreen on the e945 bad-boy and you'll wind up with zero plosives and still get the e935 sound. I have both mics, have done this, and it WORKS right out of the box and connected to an audio interface with zero eq needed. comments / questions ? - I've been doing this for 25 years in the audio business. - glad to help with any questions or concerns -- if you are on the fence, my personal opinion is the e945 offers a ton more for about $20.00 more than the e935. - oh and feedback rejection is off the charts amazing with the e945 by the way. wow just wow... so much presence / loudness you can pump up within your system before you even start to hear any feedback issues (due to it's supercardiod pattern design).

    • @tb1235
      @tb1235 Год назад

The 58 is a Dynamic microphone and the 87 is a Condenser microphone. If you're looking for a second to do the same thing the Beta 58 would most likely serve you best. The 87 will pick up much more surrounding noise, just by the way the capsule works.

E845 vs. AKG D5 - direct comparison please?
So there's E835, you have done that, but it's a cardioid.
The E945 is supercardioid so it's more comparable technically but it's not the same price range, much more expensive.
The E845 is also supercardioid and closer in price to E835 and D5 (though still a lot more expensive than D5 in Europe), so it appears to be the most comparable.

It is such a shame that Sennheiser does not offers a versions with a on/offswitch. I truly hate feedback and if it happends I wanna be able to kill it fast.

I have two e835’s and a e935 and they are the best I’ve used so far for PA/vocal music work. The e935 is slightly better at rejecting feedback and the are very detailed and sound like condenser mics. I use them for recording guitar amps and they sound better than my SM57’s. I have tried them against some SM58’s on stage and the Sennheiser’s are by far the best.

Not worth the price, very well built and looks nice though. Sennheisers I've found are not good for spoken word (5:02). I'd go with an sE V7, Behringer BA85A, or Shure SM58/BETA58A or SM57 with A2WS windscreen. Thanks for the review.

Frankly, "PODCASTAGE" I'm a big fan of what you do on the youtube deal but I think you are GREATLY missing a few major things with this mic -- 1. put a foam screen on it, that will immediately get rid of the extra high end you are noticing, while at the same time, eliminating the plosives, AND that's a huge deal because most of the time, putting on a foam screen will dampen the sound to the point where you need to bump UP the high end on your mixing desk / console. no need to do that here - 2. You can ALWAYS lower the high end on the console which is a big plus because doing the opposite introduces hiss (for example using the shure SM58). - I could keep going but I hope you get the point. a little EQ shaping, and you can put this thing on anything and it works while getting rid of a bunch of background noise / feedback issues for live stage use. What do you think ?

Strong words, but do agree. e945, single use microphone. Even with in-line preamp (Klark Teknik CT-1), the e945 is not inspiring. Specs on mic seem to be a fairy tale.
Update: used e945, Klark Teknik CT-1 in-line preamp, Neewer 48v phantom power supply, and Tascam DR-05x. Amazing!!!
Moral of story: audio interface matters.

The e965 is a condenser that requires phantom power. The e945 is dynamic and doesn't require phantom power.

Hi earthling pal ! What kind of microphone would you suggest to someone who have a "bassy" voice like... Simon Parkes (ruclips.net/video/HDZVC725TIQ/видео.html) per example. apart that he could use voicemeter banana to tweak his tone ? Sennheiser mics seems to give more clarity to voices IMHO...

The Audix OM7 has been a mainstay for ages on loud stages. It is great at rejecting noise and sounds full. RHCP have used them live since forever.

Today i got my first dynamic mic e945 but after comparing with my at2020 i was disappointed with e945. i had focusrite solo audio interface and had gain to 90% of volume but in post when I fix both channel inside Premiere pro and inside Audition amplitude the gain level, I hear lots of ambient noise . I don't had a acoustic room for shooting my Photoshop classes. So please help ....!! what wrong I was doing or I need some extra things to fix these issue because I already had at2020 condenser mic which picks lots of noise
So please help me in finding the solution in this matter.

I believe that you need very good preamps in order to use dynamic mics like an SM58 or e945 without any signal boost. Perhaps using a CL-1 mic activator could help.

I hate when people bring a Sennheiser to the gig, not that it does not sound good for vocals, but after I say just one word on my condenser the problem arrises, Sen people want the same high frequency boost and airiness, which is not possible really as it does not produce those frequencies. Also, it has this nasty frequency curve which does help some people, but certainly not everyone. Condenser-like? :)
