  • Are reef tank refugiums ACTUALLY needed at all? It all depends! In today's video, Thomas is digging deep on that question so that you can decide if a reef tank refugium is the right choice for your aquarium system. Let us know in the comments below if you think refugiums are a key component or not!

    I ran the triton method for 4 years. Here are my thoughts...Refugiums or more realistically macro algae chambers have many drawbacks. They trap detritus, allow pests to proliferate, and take up valuable sump space. In a power outage, refugiums are just a liability. Aggressive macroalgaes can out compete corals for micro and macro nutrients and some species even release toxins into the water. Modern reef equipment can easily keep a tank healthy. I'm a big fan of auto fleece rollers,. Add a good protein skimmer and reactor and you're all set. If you still have high nutrients, look at your husbandry and fish stocking levels.

    They are very necessary for easy reefing. Without a doubt the easiest nutrient stability and exporting option.

    In my experience they bottom out your nitrate and compete with your coral for food. If you have super high nitrate go for it but I'd rather have coral to suck up nutrients than macros in my sump.

    I have an idea for a 10 gallon nano tank with different types of macro algae and live rock, and a single mandarin dragonet to enjoy the copepods...

    Have you guys had any success putting macro algae in the first chamber of an AIO? Does it actually need any light to grow? I'm thinking about keeping some in mine as a mini-fuge.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      We've done this with a few of the tanks around the BRS office. But, macro algae does need light to grow, so we'll usually put a small light on it like the Innovative Marine ChaetoMax. Great slim, low profile light for macro algae in an AIO style aquarium.

    Thomas quick question, I have a IM 10 that I made a Refugium with light and my algae Chaeto died, any ideas . I used the section where filter sock would go.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад +1

      That's a hard question to answer without more info. Chaeto is pretty resilient, but won't do well if there are no nutrients to feed off of. If your tank has undetectable nitrates/phosphates, that could be a sign that a refugium is not the right addition. If you have nitrates and phosphates, but you still can't seem to keep chaeto alive, it's possible that certain trace elements (like iron) that chaeto uses are low.

    i can’t keep my nutrients up 2-0.01 i run a refuge with chaeto. light is on opposite schedule. if i was to fully remove the chaeto and just run the light would my nutrients be more stable? or would that open up a can of worms

      If there is no macro algae then what’s the point of the light?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад +3

      If your goal is to raise nutrients, start by only running the refugium every other night or cut the photo period in half and see what sort of results you get. It's important to not go from one extreme to the other, so make your adjustments slowly and see how it impacts your aquarium levels.

    I have tried twice. My chaeto gets choked out by hair algae. All parameters in spec.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      Hair algae is a much simpler and faster growing algae, so try starting with more chaeto in an effort to outcompete the hair algae. Also, manually remove as much hair algae as you can as you see it pop up. In a ball of chaeto, that's easier said than done, but will ultimately help.

    • @jamessuess3915
      @jamessuess3915 2 года назад

      Thanks for the reply. I twice have started with the largest size chaeto ball from algae barn. I cleaned the fuge several times during my attempts with no success. Even tried manually cleaning the chaeto, but that was a total failure. My only guess at this point is that maybe my nitrates are to high and are causing the hair algae to choke everything. Seems like a stretch but I am out of ideas.

      I am also wondering whether I should just use my refugium to grow hair algae. Is that a valid approach. Love to hear your thoughts.

    Excess nutrients? I can't keep mine up! I have to dose nitrates and phosphates, and feed 4 times a day just to keep them detectable. Refugiums are on the decline compared to a couple years back IMO.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      It's all about using the right tools for the right job. In your case, definitely no need to add a refugium as it would only exacerbate the problem.

  • @fuffoon

    Here is another question. Can it hurt? Is there a reason not to use one?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 года назад

      The short answer is yes. A refugium can remove too much from your water. It's generally agreed upon that a small amount of nitrates and phosphates are a good thing. Not to mention other trace elements like iron and molybdenum are used as macro algae grows.
