You can't make your unit use machine guns, the guns are manual. But I think there will be an update that adds them.

How tO USE furnace/make iron bars?

So first, you need to research it, then you have to place it with the build tool.
It works automatically, all you have to do is have coal and iron,
Iron and coal can be found in caves.
Caves can be found around the world.
It takes one raw iron and coal to make one iron bar.

In caves around the map, you can find an orange-colored stone, that is iron.
Coal is also a black-colored stone.

The boulder throwing giants only target the player, so you can just move away from your base and dodge them, and no harm will be done to your units.
