  • In spite of all my photography plans for the summer, I’ve been feeling uninspired. So to mix things up a bit, I bought a little vintage lens and attempted macro-like/close-up photography. The photos have a dreamy look thanks to the Oreston’s smooth transition from the in-focus area to out-of-focus areas, and because I shoot at the maximum aperture resulting in low contrast and a hazy glow. On another day I will try the lens stopped down, but for now I’m going to learn how this lens performs at f/1.8 and see if I can push this lens to produce an image I like under challenging conditions.
    Don’t forget to come back and see the rest of this day on my next video, I’ll be using my macro lenses and a telephoto lens (100-400mm) in rainy weather.

    I got a 50mm f1.4 Takamur lens (circa 1970s) off Ebay a couple months ago. I use it with the same screw-mount adapter you have on my Canon 5D MKII. It has dreamy images, and decent contrast for an old lens. I just got the 100-400mm lens that you use a couple weeks ago, so my concern has been testing it out and using it everyday to get used to it. Soon I will be playing with this 50mm some more. It is fun to shoot things wide open and get that dreamy look.

      That's great Bob! Were you shooting at f/1.4? I can just imagine the bokeh with that lens, would be nice to isolate a subject with other elements distanced in the background. Best of luck with the 100-400mm! It's such an awesome lens, great for close-ups too, I can't wait to share my next video, I love some of the images I just got with that lens, it's quickly becoming my favorite lens. By the way, that screw-mount was a pain to get off of the camera body haha! First I put it on the lens, and then onto the camera like normal, but it wouldn't come off the same way, my husband had to help me get it off the camera. I was worried it would never come off. LOL

      Hi Bob. I have the Pentax 50mm f1.4 8 element 'Planar Killer' as well as your version, the later 7 element f1.4 - apologies if you're already aware but a little caution is necessary using vintage lenses on the 5D series. I have a 5D III and the 7 element is fine on it but the 8 element can't be used as the rear element protrudes too far into the mirror box and would wreck the mirror, as well as trash the rear element.
      Here's a handy online guide for 5D compatibility - www.panoramaplanet.de/comp/

      @@stevenbudd3725 Thanks so much for the advice. I will be sticking with the 7 element version. I need to go out and do a lot more with it. Lately the Canon 100mm 2.8 L Macro has been living on my 5D MKII. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

    Vintage lenses are addicting to buy and collect. Each lens is unique and some of them has extra special magic to them. Best part is their affordable price.

    Large apertures and dreamy pictures is one of the reasons I LOVE your channel so much haha! I absolutely love vintage lenses and have a lot of PK mounts for my old cannon. I just have not ordered my SONY convertor to use them yet, you have me wanting to get that thing ordered. Vintage 50's are some of my favorite portrait lenses. Beautiful photos and lovely video, thank for sharing this with us! Inspired me to get off my but and order my sony convertor!

    This video inspired me to look at some old lenses I had. For example a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 from the 1970's. Sadly it's min focus distance is 0.6m or about 23.5 inches. Not as good as your find but perhaps I will search for an FD to RF adapter and give it a try. another great video. Thanks for sharing.

      I'm so glad you feel inspired to play with your old lenses some more, it is amazing how well made some of them are and that you can take their limitations and use it as a challenge to get creative. I was so surprised at how close up I could get and I'm excited to try it again on a drier day. Your 50mm 1.8 is probably a beautiful portrait lens, but I can image you could get lovely nature shots too. Thank you, Paul.

    Finally a new video. You are the best. I would use a camera and lenses like you but I can’t afford to carry all the stuff and extra weight on long hikes. Just carrying a light 3.5 lb tripod is hard after 15 miles. Thank you for another great educational video and beautiful photography.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  4 года назад

      Thanks so much, Stan! I totally understand why you would need to pack light and carry little on your hikes. I have a hard enough time just walking around a garden with my camera bag and heavy lenses. I can't imagine lugging all that on a hike. This is one reason why I prefer not to use flashes and tripods and other equipment, the experience is much more enjoyable when I have the freedom to walk about and move quickly.

      Yes, in times past all I needed was some good ideas, but for some reason this year, what I needed was a bit of a break for sure. I've got a similar lens, old Canon glass 50mm 1.4 I have not done much with it, but I think I'll take it on a landscape shoot soon. I tested it out before when I first got it years ago, but I found it to be soft. Starting out in photography I wanted everything crisp, but times change and sometimes I like a soft image now. Thanks for the inspiration to get out and use it.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  4 года назад +1

      I imagine conditions would need to be just right for a landscape shoot with a vintage lens. But, as you say too, if the composition is favorable for a softer look, then you could have a beautiful and creative image waiting to be taken. I don't know if this lens I have would work for landscapes, but I would love to try it for street photography some day.

    • @BrentTouchstone
      @BrentTouchstone 4 года назад

      @@LieslHuddleston Hey. I thought I'd give you an update... for landscape I thought the images were still too soft. What really has me baffled is when editing, I shot as I normally do, exposing for the highlights, everything was in range on my meter, but when I tried to bring back the shadows they got real muddy. Curios if that's something you've experienced? Almost like it had negative impact on the dynamic range of the camera. I'm not giving up on this lens though, I see some potential for woodland photos.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  4 года назад

      @@BrentTouchstone I think mine definitely causes some color loss and has low contrast on the maximum aperture, I have not played with it yet on the smaller apertures. Have you tried searching forums that might have a post discussing your particular lens? When I got mine I found a couple of helpful posts, I can't find them again now and I don't know what search term I used, probably regarding the haziness LOL

      @@LieslHuddleston I just received some info about Canon DSLRs with adapters for m42 lenses. It seems they have these issues with adapters that don't have a glass element. I'm guessing that's my issue. Thanks for the reply.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  4 года назад +1

      You know, I tried to figure that out myself, when I was searching for an adapter, I had no idea which one I was supposed to get, so I asked another photographer that had been using the same lens as the one I got and she recommended the adapter I ended up ordering. Do let me know if you try a different adapter and you have better results... good luck!

    It can be tough to get inspired in this Covid era. I love the look of some of these old lenses as they are fun to use, slow you down, and give unique results. This one really seems to give some nice dreamy results. Your initial comments got me wondering though, if the lens had mold or oily aperture blades would that be something limited to the lens or could use somehow get oil or mold in the camera body. I would think not but the thought crossed my mind. Very fun walk.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  4 года назад +1

      Howard, I wondered the same thing but then learned that if it had mold it would typically be inside and would not affect the camera body. I suppose if a vintage lens remained stored while attached to a camera body that might be a possibility. I don't 'see' any problems (mold can cause etching on the glass) the only slight problem I see is a few dust specks inside behind the glass but I don't think it is affecting the images. I did some research for this lens and learned that the hazy/dreamy look is very typical with this lens until you are at f/2 or smaller aperture. I'll wait for a cooler weather day with less humidity and play with the lens again.
      And yes, you are right I do think it is the overall 'climate' of sadness and frustration with this pandemic that is getting me down. I got excited about some ideas, but then when it came down to implementing them everything fell flat but it had a lot to do with my mood.
      Thanks for the comment!
