    I've used the G9 for 3 months now for sports and entertainment events at a large exhibitor in my city, here's what I have to say quite quickly:
    The body is perfect for me. The grip is the perfect depth for me. The weight is perfect for me. The construction feels rock solid. I've used it in deep Nova Scotia rains on a vacation 2 weeks ago, and I had no problems with the weather. I was excited to use a lcd display on top again because I've been using GH4's for 4 years now. The G9 was my major upgrade this year. I started out by forgetting about it, but as I readjusted to having the screen, I use it all the time now. Same situation with the analog joystick. I really like the moveable display screen. It makes everything look like gold. The programmable buttons are a god send, especially that dial on the front which I have programmed to switch into "night mode." The battery isn't as good as my GH4's, which I have the most experience with, and I presume it's because of the IBIS.
    The image quality is fantastic and 20mps is good enough. 24 would be perfect, but I have absolutely no issues with 20. The DR is good and I'm extremely happy with it. The files are large and I feel like I can really push them a lot in post-production to get enough out of them-- sometimes too much because I get carried away. I have had no issues editing photos and grain hasn't been an issue what-so-ever. Again, pixel peepers might hate that, but I came from a newspaper background, and generally when printing for publications or web, this isn't an issue in my opinion.
    I haven't used the video enough, and while in my experience it might be better than the GH4, the lack of control comparatively sorta' sucks a bit.
    The battery grip is also fantastic and matches the body perfectly.
    The menu's are fantastic, and that's something Panasonic has really nailed down for years now.
    At work we have a couple different bodies, but I usually rent. Last year we grabbed a Sony body and I can't remember which one, but they were fine. I disliked the menu's strongly and I found the ergonomics to be lacking, but that's my preference and for my needs.
    In conclusion, I wrote too much and should have just produced my own video review of the G9. Sorry about this everyone.

      If you consider the cost of the FF lenses, Panasonic and 4/3rd system makes lot more sense for an advanced enthusiast. If you are successful professional...why consider only FF, a Medium Format can also an option

      @@prashanthm4641 Are you using that logic to imply that full frame is not needed? It is a great comparison for people comparing the 2 systems on a budget. I'm literally deciding whether to save up for 6 months or is it worth saving for 1 year to invest in full frame. It's a long time and huge cost difference for entry level professionals like me.
      They're both very decent hybrid cameras, and are at the opposite ends of the sensor size spectrum that most consumers buy. Hence the relevant comparison which highlights the pros and cons to each system.

      I’m not even close to pro level, that said, I love the G9. I recently switched from a6400. I was looking at the A7iii because I thought I needed FF. After some research I got the G9 (it does exactly what I need, in camera focus stacking) I do landscape & artistic macro/ close up. I just recently bought the G9, so far I’m loving it. High Res & Post Focus has a little learning curve but it rocks. Yes, I know I can focus stack on the computer but why when the camera does it very well. The high res is fantastic for those clients that love large prints or multi canvas prints.

    This is a good analysis. These are the same two cameras I use everyday. The A7iii is stunningly capable and It’s always nearby when I need it. But the G9 is my constant companion and I can easily work within the confines of M43 in exchange for superb ergos and intuitive design.

I have filmed my first video with the Sony A7iii and I must admit that the video quality along with stills quality is superb! But every time I use the Sony I miss the enjoyment I got when using my GH4...which leads me to continually want either a GH5 or a G9.

    Really relevant comparison! Both cameras are closely priced and have A LOT of strengths. I have both systems, and agree with everything you said. For me, I use M4/3rd for travel and everyday carry and Full Frame for portraits, sports and documentary work. I'm not a fan of the M/4rd f1.2 lenses as they're just as expensive the Full Frame equivalents and get away from the m/43rds advantage of small size package. But the new sensors have improved a great deal in low light. The gap is much smaller now up to ISO 6400.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you, the gap is about 1,25 to 1,5 stops up to ISO 6 400, which is still a lot IMO since the full frame is improving as well, although the MFT is now much more usable for professional work.

      I am using Olympus Em1(markI) aside with Canon 5DII for 2 years shooting weddings. I usually do 70% of the wedding with M43, they're way sharper than FF and ISO is no problem when you have fast primes(they don't need to be the fastest for cool results, but faster is better).
      My setup is Leica 15mm f1.7, Oly 45mm f1.8 and 60mm macro f2.8 on Oly M1 and Canon 24-105 f4 and Canon 40 f2.8 on Canon 5D MarkII.
      I also like to use artificial light on both.
      If you want to see the results, my Instagram profile is @ronybonani.
      M43 are awesome, but you have to change your head to M43 photographer instead of FF photographer, forget the high iso and use higher aperture.

    Great review. For me they are different cameras as the cost difference is considerable and the handling is shockingly different. I tried the Sony and the lenses are very heavy. The zoom is very stiff. Don’t get me wrong, the Sony is a better camera in many ways but I’m not taking it traveling. It’s a monster. Each provides a different compromise. And if you’re a vlogger the Sony is not an option.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      Fortunately, there is a lot of options on the market now, so anybody can choose what best suits his needs. There are some small lenses for full frame like 24-70mm F4, Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 is also tiny for what it does. Sony definitely is an option if you are vlogger though, I will make a video about that.

      Which camera would you choose for real estate photography, where 95% is stills and 5% video; where aperture is anywhere from 7.1 to 11 and everything, foreground and background, is usually in focus; where you almost always shoot from a tripod during the daylight hours; where you do a lot of walking from house to house (sometimes six houses a day), room to room; but where overall image quality is your biggest criterion?

    • @Sabenn
      @Sabenn 5 лет назад +1

Love the dof in a7iii but that wears off. Like the flip screen, better firmware tech, size/eco system with Mft. The ff hype is more for sales than for most people use.

    Great review. Each of us has our own criteria based on what's most important to us. For me, the fully articulated screen of the G9 is mandatory. The a73 has all kinds of wonderful features, but the fact that its screen only tilts makes it not nearly as usable with my aging knees. I've come to rely on a touch screen more and more, especially touch focus. And finally, in the real world, the extra stabilization in the Panasonic does a lot to offset the sensor size differences relative to dynamic range and noise. Your review is spot-on that these are both incredible cameras and can make incredible pictures. How fortunate we are to have such a wealth of capable tools!

    • @TheHybridShooter

    I am so happy that Sony found it worthy to try Full Frame CSC's. I could have gone so wrong! But... oh my the Dynamic Range, the low levels of noise, the IBIS, the ... ah so good. Not cheap, but you pay for what you get here.
    And it is also is nice to see that Panasonic is also very capable to squeeze as much quality out of that smaller sensor. Very good quality! In the begin everybody laughed and said that those sensors were just kid toys. Look at those people who said that now.
    So both are a good buy.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +5

      Adrian Pocea if the HLG doesn't work, try other profile or customize a LUT. I personally don't use LUTs except for my own custom made for specific picture profile and I definitely wouldn't pay someone 28 dollars for sharing his lumetri settings, so that is not a problem for me. I don't shoot weddings or events, so I don't know what is required for those occasions, but for my purposes I prefer 120p.

Sony should take a lesson from Panosonic on how to build a camera body that is comfortable and easy to navigate through menus. I am curious as to how you got the shot of the eagle in flight? My one big negative about the G9 is that it always wants to focus on busy backgrounds instead of the subject in the foreground. This is really frustrating when attempt to focus on a bird-in-flight.

    I’ve had a G9 for a couple of years and I’d say it’s the best handling camera I’ve ever owned - and I’ve used many marques down the years.
    I recently decided to try ‘full frame’ again via a second hand A7rii - initially with adapted EF lenses, which I’ve been slightly disappointed by. The experience with native primes (all Samyangs, but especially AF models) has been transformative.
    I’ll likely carry on using both, but the resolution from the Sony r, adds just an extra point of differentiation along with phenomenal dynamic range and of course depth of field control.
    I could wish for a Sony that had the ergonomics of the Panasonic, plus the incredible IBIS and some of the technological implementations of 4K shooting for stills. I can’t afford an S series Penny and the lenses I’d need for that system.
    Overall I agree with just about all the points you make. I would perhaps also add that the all-round rubber/polycarbonate skin on the G9 is something I prefer. The Sony is looking tatty around the sharp edges where the paintwork tend to scuff (the same is true of my Olympus EM1) whereas Panasonic’s/other marques tend to look pristine for longer. A minor point, but worth mentioning.

      g80 low light iso is rated at 670 by dxo (as of mid 2018, the best of the line, omd em1 mk2 is rated 1300, i guess g9 is somewhere around 1300 also), a7 line - above 3500, a7s goes up to 3700 iso. you just can't beat that in many situations. a have g80, my d7200 with 18-35 f1.8 beats the crap out of it in low light w/o flash, mostly cuz d7200 can do af at -4ev, i guess g9 could do almost as good as d7200, but never as good as ff a7 mk3. you wanna walk in nigth city (and not just do static, tripod stills), grab a7 mk3, well, if your pockets are deep enough :-) wait till 2020 when it'll sell for $600 on ebay

      Andrei K that is right, I have compared G9 to A6500 (same sensor as in D7200) and it is pretty close bit.ly/G9vsA6500 G80 DxO score is definitely underrated, the G9 is significantly better, but the G80 is certainly more than half as good.

    THANK YOU for this Awesome review!!! I love my G9 but keep wondering if I should go full frame. I envy parts of the Sony but I think I am going to stick with my G9 because I LOVE the handling and smaller lenses. I can forego the 5-8% of the shots that I need a little more dynamic range. Besides I have been shooting auto-bracketing on my true HDR shots. THANKS!

    Thank you, that was interesting. I guess for me there can only be one really viable option, partly because I am so fond of landscapes and need every bit of sensor size and the advantages that gives but also as I got a huge stash of old manual focus lenses and I die to use them and even APS-C makes me cringe (don't get me wrong I started that way as most of us in digital SLR).
    What you managed to do was to open my eyes to the capabilities of the Panasonic; for me the m4/3 has always been about portability, having a small camera and lens combo that can always be with you and now suddenly the m4/3 is LARGER than the full frame camera, but you shown that it has capabilities beyond, stabilization and viewfinder that is huge too.
    When it comes to ergonomics I'm not so sure Panasonic has an advantage, for me that is. As I have grew up on manual 135 film cameras and having aperture and shutter speed dial to turn besides the ISO (I think in ASA) having programmable buttons and stuff in menus is like trying to teach a chimpanzee the finer points of astrophysics I'm afraid.

    Great video. Spot on conclusion. I've been thinking about that exact combo of A7III and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 as to get that kind of sensor and AF performance. But ultimately the A7III and a fullframe system in general, doesn't fit in well with my kind of shooting. The G9 is a dream to use and I love the fact lenses can be kept really compact. That also allows a 2nd camera, like the GX80 to run next beside it as an in-and-around-the-house kind of camera with for instant the Leica 15mm f/1.7 on there. That combination has a similar footprint as the LX100. And the GH5S has shown sensor performance from a 4/3" has still got some tricks up its sleeve. Just think how far we've come from the GH4 that was terrible above ISO800, struggling with dynamic range, even colors... had a 4K crop and had no sensor stabilization. Imagine the next generation Panasonic cameras, they will be capable enough to handle any scenario. They just need to acknowledge their DfD system was a poor choice and start implementing a phase detect system. So I see a bright future there for MFT and not enough reason to get into the fullframe game.
    Speaking of which... with the excellent A7III and its competitive pricing... and a very neglected compact lens line-up for Sony APS-C... what will become of the Sony Axx00 series? I can hardly imagine anyone spending 1700,- on a A6700, like I said there hasn't been any compact Sony APS-C lenses developed in recent years and with that pricetag, wouldn't you just pick the A7III instead? I can only really see them bring the A5x00 series back and keep it sub-1000,- pricing. It will also be interesting to see more advanced mirrorless systems from Canon & Nikon.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +1

      It is mostly about what you prefer. At the moment I am willing to sacrifice a bit of handling comfort for the A7 III output, but I hope that one day there will be a camera with A7 III performance and G9 handling. When I made video "is Sony APS-C dead?" back in september 2017 everybody thought I am wrong and that the APS-C is not going anywhere, but it seems like I was right after all...

    Hi! Does the Panasonic g9's back wheel can be customised to set the iso as the A7III can do? If it can be customised I will agree that the G9 is better in use. I thound that the function is very useful.

  • @lensworkpublishing

    One other thing. Because the micro four-thirds uses a different aspect ratio that I prefer, cropping a Sony image to that same aspect ratio would reduce its effective pixels from 24 megapixels to 21 megapixels. The difference between that and the Panasonic is so small as to be perfectly negligible.

    When you say FF look is achievable on G9 with "suitable lenses", which lenses did you have in mind? Did you mean solely with the aid of Speedbooster, or can one also achieve that look with native mft lenses like the Pana Leica 42.5 f1.2 or the oly pro 17mm f1.2 for example?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад +1

      It is not completely clear what it "full frame look" so that is difficult to tell. F1.2 or F1.4 usually provide DOF that is shallow enough, although F1.4 or F1.2 on full frame is still another league.

    Hello HS, like you, I bought the G9 for the viewfinder, but i'm having some trouble with it. I took some pics after a BB game on sigma 16mm, iso 800 or 1600. When I zoom in to check sharpness in the VF, it looks like a noisy blotchy mess, LCD monitor shows similar results maybe not quite as bad. When I look at the pictures on the PC, they're fine, no noise, sharp detail. What's going on ?, are there settings for the VF? It reminds me of watching a movie on TV in Dynamic setting vs Movie mode. Makes it very hard to confirm image quality? Is there some way to set the VF/monitor in "movie" mode and reduce gain (I have brightness on auto or at center position). Do you also have this problem of confirming sharpness? Thanks

    So i bought the G9 3 weeks ago from Adorama. Great customer service, great deal battery grip, nice powered mic (350.00 value) and 100 dollar gift card for free. I am still disappointed with the low light performance on the G9. Thinking of returning it for the Sony a7III. But with the super high price tag of the G lens, slowing me done to trade in my G9. Do you have any recommendations on lower cost lens. Or am i stuck spending a ton on Sony lens. Also really not crazy about the joystick and the front dial locations on G9. I like the front dial setup on my G7 better. My 10 year old daughter loves the G7 and her old GH1. So micro 4/3 will be part of this family for a long time. Love your videos great job on them.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад

      Depends on whether you want zoom, what range and so. Tamron 28-75 is definitely the best alternative to g-master 24-70. It also depends on whether you intend to shoot moving subjects in low light, if not, the G9 already compensates for that ISO performance a lot by the IBIS, so you will need to use some bright lenses on the A7 III as well.

    Great detailed review as always. I wonder how the EM1-Mark II compares to the Panasonic G9. The one thing you didn't go more into in the video is how much the better IBIS on the G9 can help you get similar image quality to the full frame camera. For example on my EM1- Mark II I can use a super slow shutter speed and use a lower ISO than I would have to use on a Full Frame camera like Canon or Nikon. Of course the Sony has IBIS too, but not as good. So if you factor that in, the image quality in the real world is VERY close, and in some cases better on M43 like G9 or EM1-Mark II.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you, I have talked about that in this video, the IBIS in both G9 and EM1 II is great, but it only makes difference for long handheld exposures of non-moving subjects, so it definitely doesn't make the image quality equal, it won't help while shooting events, sports or any other moving subjects. You can also use tripod for long exposure with other cameras.

    Great video! Worth the wait. I'm actually leaning towards the G9. Though I have no idea what lens to buy and their price, going M43 would more likely be less expensive than going FF.
    What if I could only get one lens (or two, if I have to), what would you recommend for both systems? In order of importance; wide angle, food/macro, for street shooting and lastly, a bit of a zoom.
    Also, I think I stumbled on a video demystifying the "full-frame" look. Will edit comment when I find it.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you, there is a ton of videos about "demystifying" full frame look, but the truth is that until they make F1.4 zoom lenses and F0.9 prime lenses for M43 (in that case we would have to demystify M43 size advantage), full frame look will be easier to achieve with full frame camera.
      For M43 I would recommend Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8 or 12-60mm F2.8-4. For A7 III I recommend Tamron 28-75mm F2.8.

      I understand it's kind of a soccer mom/ minivan kind of cam...or at least seems like it. Not my initial choice either. The IV is way ahead of the previous versions though.
      From dp review...(just the specs in case you haven't seem them..if so...sorry for bothering you with it)
      The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV is an enthusiast long zoom camera that improves upon its predecessor by adding a new image processor (the Bionz X from the a9), a hybrid AF system with 325 phase-detect points and 24 fps continuous shooting. It continues to use a 20MP 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor and 24-600mm equiv. F2.4-4 lens. Images can be composed on a new 3" tilting touchscreen LCD or the same OLED electronic viewfinder found on the RX10 III.
      The RX captures UHD 4K video without pixel binning to insure the best possible quality. It offers numerous capture tools, including S-Log2/3 support, gamma display assist, zebra and proxy recording. High frame rate video at up to 960 fps can also be recorded. Both mic and headphone jacks are built in.

    Great head to head comparison. Really no clear winner as they are among the best in their FF and m4/3 class. I am tempted to add the A73, but will try to squeeze more out of the G9 first.

      They cost about the same though which is why they are in the same price class, unfortunately m43 is leaning towards videography and enthusiast grade photography. Only because of the iso performance/lowlight and autofocus. Larger sensor more light. The A7iii is really as good as full frame can get. I used to be heavily invested in m43, had the gx8, gh4 and the leica line of glass. It wasn't enough for my work.

    Not sure if I should write on english or Czech, I do on english. Me like a ice hockey coach need cam for quick pics of the game, on ice situation but I do a lot of movies also. I´d love to have Sony A7III, but all the pricing includes objective and so else is definitely over my budget. Do you recommend G9?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад

      Kľudne aj česky, G9 je určite dobrá voľba, na video aj GH5, momentálne sú v CZ / SK aj v akcii s objektívmi / gripom zdarma.

    • @OldrichJindracoach

      Závisí, aké sú priority, G9 sa omnoho lepšie ovláda a celkovo lepšie používa, Sony má o čosi lepší výstup v zlých podmienkach, ale na také využitie by som asi zobral tú G9.

    4\3 sensor simply not enough in terms of image quality (noise in the shadows and low light even at low iso) and depth of field.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      The Hybrid Shooter ya agreed.

    • @JohnHarvey
      @JohnHarvey 6 лет назад +1

      Fafadude i think your thinking about this wrong. Yes 4/3 lenses are expensive. The speed booster is meant to utilize your existing lenses if you have any and reduce the massive crop Factor you see when using those full frame lenses you already have. If your spending money on the 4/3 lenses you can't even use the speed booster. Agreed about the lack of autofulocus and compatibility though. Just depends on what you want in a camera. 4/3 cameras like the g9 and gh5 can do a lot more than many full frame cameras. Just depends on what your into ya know?

    I really wish that Sony made the grip a tiny bit bigger like the G9. Also, remove the exposure dial, add the top LCD screen. And add the drive mode like the A9. That would be the dream comes true.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад

      I only miss the drive mode dial, I never look at the top LCD on my G9 and it think that it is redundant in modern camera since you can see the information the main display.

  • @Dahrenhorst

    What came a bit short is the system factor. The body together with 3 zooms and a couple prime lenses uses up much more space, weighs a lot more and is much more expensive for the Sony compared to the Panasonic.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  4 года назад

      I don't think that it came shot and there is also wider variety of cheaper lenses for Sony, so I wouldn't say that Sony FF system is generally more expensive.

    Some great new cameras but I’m still enjoying my D500 for photography. Panasonic makes great stuff for video. I enjoy my G85 quite a bit for affordable, compact video. Pictures are are pretty good from the G85 too surprisingly.

      I've used the g85 for a while before handed it down to my younger sister, it is a very capable camera and I was surprised how good the pictures look coming out from it with full auto settings! with little edit my pictures were more than just good to my eyes! now I'm using the gh5 and g9 as my B cam or mainly for pictures.

    Can someone tell me which camera would you choose from the options, I need great image quality, 4k and IBIS. I also need photo stacking in camera.
    1. Olympus EM10 Mark IIIs
    2. Panasonic G95
    Which one is better? If these were the options. They say Olympus is the best IBIS, but want your optionin.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I can't recommend either of them, M43 is not a perspective system. Buying an APS-C camera with stabilized lens is better option.

    Hello my friend !
    Lumix G9 is currently at 1400€ (even 1350€ after cashback) on alza.sk ! whereas Sony A7III is usually at 2300€ everywhere in EU... I am really tempted to pull the trigger with the G9... I own the G7 and the Fuji XT2. The G9 might be the right update for my G7 for video use and casual pictures shooting :) I really love my Fuji but I also love my micro 4/3 lenses and keep coming back to my loving Lumix :)
    Love your content, looking forward to the next video !

      Hello Julien!
      Price of the A7 III in Europe is really unfortunate, I fortunately bought mine from Hong Kong, so it cost much less. 1 350 for the G9 is indeed very good price.

      Yes, and I already made my order...! Will get my G9 tomorrow at Alza :)))
      Good for you if you managed to get a good deal for your A7III because our fellow shooters in EU have a hard find getting their hands on Sony A7 or Nikon D850... it looks like EU is not a priority for the camera manufacturers...

    One thing I dislike about the Sony is how it feels in my hand. Also the lack of good controls. Maybe I’m just spoiled with large body Nikons. Sony tech and size is tempting though.

    So I've had both of these cameras for a couple of weeks now and I hate it. I don't know which one to use! I don't want to send the Panasonic back but I think I have to. Having both of them requires me to make a choice and I don't like it. How do you do it?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +1

      It is simple, if I need shallow depth of field or to use high ISO, I use A7 III, otherwise I use G9, because it is more fun.

    • @paulchoate1
      @paulchoate1 6 лет назад

      I've made my decision. Both cameras are great and MORE than enough for me but the Sony with it's DOF and better ability to blow out backgrounds is hard to beat. Of course I'll shoot at F4 and above often so that is not the only factor: the shutter of the G9 sounds like my 5 yr old daughter's toy camera lol. Yes, I'm reaching here to justify the A7 over the G9!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 лет назад +1

      @@paulchoate1 I probably won't help with justification, both are great cameras, although I probably wouldn't decide based on the shutter sound. Quieter shutter means less shake while taking stills.

    • @paulchoate1
      @paulchoate1 6 лет назад

      @@TheHybridShooter Lol I know. I simply like the heavier "feel" of the Sony, the full-frame "look" if I want it and I like that heavy, old-school sounding loud mechanical shutter sound when I don't need it to be quiet (easy enough to switch to electronic shutter or silent mode on both cameras). Both cameras are awesome but I simply can't handle both! Although I've been known to change my mind.
