The sole purpose of university now is to make friends and connections (i.e. linking into the societal chain). If you are not a social butterfly, there is absolutely no point in going to university. You can learn everything online at your own pace, for free, and without having to worry about exams and assignments. My personal interest and aptitudes were in aesthetic subjects, but instead of becoming an artist, I spent over a decade obtaining two STEM degrees, and I acquired a varied experience by working across multiple experimental research groups. After graduation, I learned of the dismal job prospects as I struggled to find a job in the real world and eventually ended up with a job in warehousing. I went into STEM because of the pressures and wrongheaded notions that were inculcated into me in my childhood. Please understand that a degree is effectively just a receipt and it avails you nothing (except possibly a hefty debt).

Speaking specifically of online education, I think the quality of education depends on several factors. It is very difficult to clarify doubts with distance learning, especially if we take into account the human factor. It is much easier and more efficient to talk physically with a human being to clarify doubts. In my case, which is engineering, studying specific subjects online is extremely difficult because the dynamics of the class are not the same. Even though I take live online classes, I can never clear 100% of my doubts. To remove the human factor from the equation, I think that the organization of the course should be completely perfect to replace any need for such interaction. Sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language.

I think in the near future only a few top universities will survive and it will be a sort of country club for the ultra rich kids (the 1% of the 1%) and a few sponsored geniuses. The states won't be willing or able to pay for buildings and professors when you can just stream a single guy all over the world. Parents won't be willing or able to pay for the accommodation and the tuition fees of their kids when everything is free on the internet. Students won't be willing to leave the confort of their bedrooms, maybe it's different when you pay for university, but here in France it's free and we're used to never attend any lecture, only a few students go and write a transcript for the whole class, we just go to chit-chat at the cafeteria. Finally, i think climate change will be used to continue covid-like restrictions, like they will say students commuting causes too much pollution, or students should live with their parents in order to save houses for the climatic refugees... so remote teaching will be mandatory. Maybe the universities could become research centers with only graduate students but i doubt the states will bother with that when big tech is happy to do its own research, for profit...

Ok. Interesting speaker. The problem is that the University is increasingly failing to produce graduates capable to pay off their student loans. He can have his opinions about the purpuse of the university, but it the university doesnt sufficently proritize gainful enployment, especially how deparments in virtually every college and university has a sales pitch about every major it offers leads to a successful career.

How comes TED has 30 million subscribers and many videos have like 1k views after 6 months? 🤔

For the first 1 min, I felt really bored because the tedtalks that I have watched before used to have a really different start but after listening for 2,4 mins, I really started liking the content as it described the most current situation

Not STEM, STEAM. The arts is critical for creating new ideas and explore new insights into everyday life

I know many people with a degree in Steam, their major being Fifa or Call of Duty (Steam is a video game platform)

Yup. Its not to create job ready graduates. The reverse thinking is what led administrators to call for adjuncts with “real world experience” who were paid nothing and gave fewer fucks about relevance than the tenured faculty.

    The Problem is inept Leadership.
This Gentleman is very valid in his view point; though he is flogging a dead Horse, that can only be Saved by Thinking Forwards Instead.
Surely the Heart and Soul of University Culture should be Brilliance, Innovation and Excellence...
To Light The Way Into The Darkness Of The Unknown, and Create Industries?
Definitely better than robbing people of Their Futures, via indentured servitude and stupidity?

So the PA to the Chair of Governors discloses a confidential letter intended for the Chair of Governors to a University Secretary without the consent and the beautiful karma of seeing said PA's CV land on your desk looking for a job.
