Lee you’re smart enough, kind enough and gosh darn it , people ❤ you.
Lol. Thanks!
Gosh darn, Stuart Smalley would have seriously struggled in this influencer day and age😹 this video so on point!😻
And this is why i love you 💖 its almost jarring talking to older folks, who arent on social media, who have had plants for decades, and just how much they dont obsess over it like we all seem to. They love their plants, of course! But they don't care about trends, because they arent exposed to them, and just are healthy about it and not spending ABSURD amounts of money on things that *might* work. Its so refreshing!
Ive started trying to just get in a similar mindset, just "these bring me joy and peace, i dont need need fancy things because someone online told me i do, if it starts stressing me out, lets reevaluate." Ive gotten picky about who i choose to watch and listen to for advise online. I don't care if theres a sponsored video or anything, y'all need to get paid! But i need to know I can trust the person. And i feel like i can trust you, Lee. Even more so now 💖
Great stuff! We try so hard to grow our overgrown tropical weeds indoors and our current iteration of society does a great job of reinforcing all the worst fears and anxieties in order to exploit us.
As someone who’s used stratum in fish/shrimp tanks for years, I can’t believe y’all found a more expensive version of dirt for plants 😂😂
We have problems 😭
as someone who uses garden soil in my planted tanks and garden soil in my houseplants this video is so painful. overpriced BS
You are my favorite plant guy
Thanks so much!
I absolutely love your sense of humour. Thank you
Lol, meanwhile the aquarium hobbyists are wondering where the hell all their aquatic plant substrate went.
You make a good point about how social media (and the pandemic lockdown let's be real) has had an impact on the houseplant hobby. We live in such a consumerist, "keeping up with the joneses" society that we can fall prey to forgetting what it is we love about our interests and our communities.
🌱🌱 well said!
I've been wondering how our actual aquarium friends are holding up... 😬
You’re way too funny to make plant RUclips’s 😂 but I’m lucky that you do because you provide excellent advice in a perfectly dark humor way!
Thank you!
I cannot love this video enough😂
Hilarious. As I was watching i was thinking, "oh, but it's all about tree fern fiber now."
Listen, I'm putting dirt in my poles and moss in my prop box and that's it.
But seriously, can we have an update on that prop box?
Haha in one of my community questions videos I will.
You are so much more real than so many other youtubers i watch... and so right about the 'trends' ... do what makes you happy
i think your channel is one of the best out there. seriously, you share REAL & useful knowledge about plants, without sugarcoating or treating them like kids LOL you actually know what youre doing and i appreciate it a lot, keep up the good work 💪💪
"I just wanna grow plants and make friends" needs to be on your next t-shirt😆
I totally agree with you about the sold out of things when some ppl say it's good! It's been a year and I'm still looking for mosquito bits 😢
Not the mosquito bits! 😞
Amazon or ebay (the only places I could find em in Australia anyway)
Happened in the keyboard community aswell 😢
Where do you live? For me they are at big box stores like Walmart, as well as local hardware stores and farm supply stores.

I feel so seen I could cry.
And THANK YOU for mentioning sustainability. 🙏🏼💚💕
Back in 2019, I checked out a few videos just to get info on plants I had, and the next thing I knew, I was being hustled out of some gate into a rare-plant self-esteem death-match in a ring that, as you said, none of us asked to be in.
Wish capitalism could just "let people grow plants and make friends". 🌱💞
The eye twitching lol same
I love the rant! That totally made my day. The telephone call though that ended me!
lol you got the "sorry sir this is a petsmart"
nice
Gotta hit em a "sir, this is a Wendy's"
This gave me all the reassurance that I didnt know I needed.
We're all drowning in this sea of consumerism together 🙃
Loved the video, Lee!!!
Thanks Jeff.
Could not love this- and you for it- more
Thanks Sarah!
Lmaooo I grow my plants and mind my business. These ppl will drive you to drink if you let ‘em 🫠. Love Koa 🖤.
As a Canadian, I feel you... finding the things seems so much more expensive and a hunt.
So accurate! Super Funny Too! 😂 Always enjoy your videos. Take Care.🪴
Glad you liked it
Soo relatable the auto response and eye twitching 😂❤ your work, keep em coming.
Bahahahaha!! Can I relate or what?!? So good! Thanks, Lee!!
Always look forward to your videos. Love your shtick. You are practical, informative, and funny as ... Forget all the hpye, I'm done
Adorable video. You are such a cutie love your videos.
Was very funny - I am too cheap to fall for most of these plant fads. I would like to say too wise but no, mostly I hate to spend money.
I keep getting sucked in.
@@KillThisPlant Did not want to lead with this, but I have been growing houseplants since the 80s and so I have learned not to spend my savings on plants. Still tempted sometimes, but mostly I keep extra cash for a rainy day.
So true!! LOL!! Such a good video!
Lol! Your videos are great man. Really look forward to them.
I am also REALLY over buying new substrates, but I bit the bullet and bought stratum when I won a $150 cutting in a raffle and it would not root in water. It really took off, and since then I've used it for various hard to root cuttings and wet sticks. And have sold those for quite a bit more than the $20 I paid for the stratum. I'm a convert.
Brilliant video/point!!!!!
As an orchid hobbyist i understand this exactly. Last year long strands spagnum peat moss became a "thing" i need it for my japanese wind orchids. Suddenly it was stooooopid expensive, then it became unobtanium. Finally it is no longer popular except among wind orchid growers and i could finally get some so i can repot my wind orchids. 😊
LESSON LEARNED - watch out for the hype on products for your hobby because you may be making something hard to find for people who actually need it. I am personally taking this lesson to heart because i can think off all the time i have fallen for the latest and greatest. 😢
That was brilliant! 👏👏👏
I feel you!
"I JUST WANNA GROW PLANTS AND MAKE FRIENDS!!"😭🤣

best video yet.
Thanks!
Dude you are awesome. Shit is so funny but also incredibly helpful and educational.
I felt this. I’m new to plants but you are so right, that trendy, influencer, spend spend spend mentality is all over darn near everything these days 😓
“Sir, this is a PetSmart”
You’re so funny, love it
I just use perlite and Spag moss, yes it’s work when you change over to soil but I love getting my hand dirty with plants
Dam amazing crazy pricing
Love to see your content
Hope you’re having a nice spring
Please make more videos. I’ve learned a lot from your channel, but also have been very entertained! Job well done
I'm not even much a houseplants person, I wound up here by accident bc I'm a vegetable gardener and youtube's algorithm isn't sure about the difference, but even without knowing this hobby at all I relate to this deeply for other hobbies that indeed, are being ruined by trends and pressure and instagram.
Glad it resonated with you!
I think we all hard relate to this one!
I love this
OH MY GAWD YES YES YES!!!! I am so there right now!!!! Earlier I went outside and litterly screamed at the top of my freaking lungs WHY! WHY! WHY! I HATE EVERYTHING!!!! I just wanna grow plants, have something beautiful to distract myself from my hellish life and be happy. I've shipped 3 Monsteras, a Ponytail Palm and Bella Palm, they were all ripped up before they even went in the box. My tiny baby Fuchsias were held hostage by USPS for a week getting bounced back n forth from Dallas to Fort Worth, then sent to the wrong city and showed up looking like chum. I was sent the wrong Spider Plant, can't ever find decent potting soil in stock, forget about finding planter pots. IT'S BEEN A NIGHTMARE!!! I'm like all I wanted was to make myself happy and I'm bawling my head off 😭 why am doing this to myself???
...You're not wrong
this was so real and extremely funny
Always super excited to see ur videos
THIS THIS THIS THIS!!! this also applies to other niches, hobbies and interests. it makes sall the fun things not so fun :( Thanks for making this video
Great skit as always & got the point!
I follow ALL the plant RUclipsrs and this was THEE most relatable plant video EVER! You're the best man!!
I use stratum all the time to root cuttings. I mix it with pumice for better aeration but it's usually $17 a bag if I catch it on sale at Petco.
Oooh can't wait to try this out!
You’re hilarious 😂
You are a cutie-patootie. Keep up the good work!
Your best video yet! (And thank you for calling out social/capitalistic hobby culture)
Thanks!!
Hey I’ve used fluval stratum in terrarium mixes, never heard of using it for propagating! I’m going to try this out tonight, thanks for the tip. Ps you are hilarious. Pss the woman from petsmart cracked me up… “I’m confused. This is petsmart.” Haha 🤨
Yes it's excellent for rooting cuttings. Mix it with a little perlite or pumice for better aeration.
It's great for rooting. I've used it with some cuttings that would absolutely not root in water, and they finally rooted and out new growth
Not going to lie. I don't follow trends at all but someone gave me a cutting in fluval and I tossed it in my prop box with my moss and some pon that I got another cutting in. This is literally a small bin I was using and since, it always produces the best roots of all my prop boxes so I ordered a bag a month or so ago. I think it was $27 US and I was shocked at the price. My jaw hit the floor when you were going on about the price.
I hope the price drops and you are able to find some.
Hey, I just had the same experience here in Germany. I was looking for worm casting and charcoal and all the stores treated me like I was completly Crazy and didn‘t know this Stoff at all ;). Thanks for a good laugh in the morning
Actually Perfect depiction...so frustrating..thanks for making it funny, and reminding us that we all need to check in with ourselves once in awhile. It is after all, a HOBBY (not a job) that should bring us joy... Not break the bank or cause anxiety.
Taking a break from repotting, I discovered a new Kill This Plant. Hurrah! I was already glad to just be dealing with the plants, not filming as well, so this is cake icing. Still, when the supermarket has a plant not in my collection for £3.50, it might as well be a pokemon.
Was the supermarket Morrison's by chance? They have some great bargains there on houseplants!
@@cherie7100 ooo, thanks for the tip! I've been having good luck at Sainsbury.
@@qaphqa I got my 2nd ever plant from there! A Haworthia I've named spike! He started to bloom earlier this month, I'm hoping he produces pups soon.

This video😂😂😂, yessss! Literally in this order I found out about stratum and tree fern fiber. Bought both from Etsy. Enjoyed your vid Lee 👋🏾😂
my dude, im in tears
😂 I know what you mean!!! Exactly… Thanks for the laughs!
Nice keyboard :D
I love how it goes clickity clack thock thock
You crack me up!! Thank goodness it's not that expensive in the states because I have found it to be amazing for my alocasias and tissue culture babies. But yeah, a bit pricey enit!
hahahaha the soliloquy....that's me...with EVERYTHING. also known as self-inflicted mental torture. LOL
LOL this vid is great
U can use any aquarium soil!
Hi! Hope you're well. I need help. I've acquired few monstera stem cuttings (no leaves). I've put them in a clear box with moss. I do not have grow light so keep it in the balcony where it gets the morning sun (at least 6 hrs). I kept them in the box 2 days back and opened the box today only to find out part of stem on all the cuttings had turned black. I cut the rotted part and put them in the box again. But I've kept the box in shaded part of the balcony where it doesn't get direct sunlight. Please advise if I need to do something different.
I use stratum for fish tanks.
Hilarious seeing people scramble for Fluval Stratum. It’s not that expensive here, and I have tons leftover from when I used to planted shrimp tanks 😂
I want one. But I feel like the rabbit hole goes too deep.
@@KillThisPlant oh it does-very much so 😅 they’re amazing once you get everything under your belt, but the complexity is really high (and it can cost a lot of money quick)
Do you have any merch? I love your sweatshirt, I would wear it everyday
Maybe at some point!
If I couldn’t find coconut coir for my monstera mix… is the earth worm, perlite and soil enough..?😢
You've lost so much weight! Ya look great but i hope you're being healthy❤
Trend cycles on tiktok and insta are exhausting. I can't handle the consumerism of it all.
I was wondering when Tree fern was going to be mentioned, its also pretty expensive 😅
Jajaja 😁😆😅
I didn't expect that :D. Love you man
Appreciate it!
Where did you get the box? I used to have one of these for my files, and I cannot find another.
I don’t get it. Which one should I order? I have big bins of every other grow media available but I need something else that may or may not work better than everything else I’ve tried and tested. Please clarify!!!
As a planted aquarium keeper - I just use plain old sand. 25 kg for less than 3 bucks. Plants are happy, fish are happy, wallet is happy.
This is hilarious! I've had some aquariums so I'm familiar with Stratus and other subtrates. Out of curiousity, where did it go viral with using it for houseplants? I'm curious now since I have some left overs. 😅
I think probably around a year ago houseplant people caught onto it, it started picking up steam until it was abandoned in favour of the next thing.
@@KillThisPlant Sounds about right! 😂Gotta love the hypes tho, keeps it interesting. (Unless you get this invested like you displayed)
it’s $45 a bag in the USA.
Hello! im currently moving in a few days and my huge Monstera Deliciosa is putting out new leaves and im unsure the best way to transport him!
Maybe a craft paper wrap roll would do the trick?
I just want to grow plants and make friends 😍
I didn’t subscribe to this 😒
I am complicit 😵💫
Tree fiber does sound pretty great 🤔
This was great ....so true
i just use miracle gro despite what ppl have said. My perlite is also by miracle gro. My fertilizer is often whatever is cheapest or what I have on hand. My plants are alive and healthy and growing. I def have some plants that I wouldn't have bought had I not saw people growing them out, but what works in my weather, my budget and my house isn't what will work for many people. Also, a year ago I had a dozen or so plants propagating and now I am like "I literally don't need more, why not let it grow into a bigger plant instead of having 30 smaller ones!?" I do get it for the unstable variagation or if a plant has become too large or leggy, but as tempting as it is to cut the head off my fiddle leaf fig because I see people do it with cool results, I don't need to prop a half dozen more fiddles. As it is I am going to be squished out of my house and sleeping in a jungle canapoy when these plants reach maturity! Also, they eat and drink a LOT, they are costing me almost as much to take care of between soil, pots, food and electricity as just having another child would cost!! LOL
A lot of people, me included, are trying to squeeze 5-10% better grow by going with a fancy growing medium.
But an hour extra of light a day can out perform "the best medium". It's good to have your priorities straight!
Wow! Thank you for taking the time of writing this. I stumble into the video while looking for some scuba-diving stuff (algorithms right?) then got this urge to make a "propagation box". I never knew that was a thing. Have a few plants in and around the house but never got into it, maybe luck but the plants I have are doing ok, (I think) automatic sprinklers outside and every Friday before cocktail hour I water the ones inside. Then this "box" in the video, and something about the what-stratum?... what did he say? what is that? what's with the box? what do you do?... I'm freaking out to figure the darn box more than he's freaking looking for that material. Looked at all the comments waiting to see someone write their box is this or that. then I read your comment. hmmmmmm I think my blood pressure was rising a little until that moment... So yeah, don't know what's the box these people are talking about and I don't need to know. I'll go outside and look at the flowers of my plumeria on the front, gardenia at the entrance, the couple orchids in the backyard and the healthy rosemary bush on the corner, then I'll water the small cactus, spider and violet inside and will smile with peace of mind. You guys enjoy propagating stuff in those boxes.
@@anaziegler6311 if you're a scuba diver it sounds like you've already got an amazing hobby! Plants inside can totally be for everyone but some ppl they're just a pain in the butt! Fluvalstratum is what he said. I won't be buying it but I do see a lot of ppl using it. If you ever do get into house plants propogations help you make more for free (unless you use fluvalstratum) I just cut and toss into water and wait! 😂 Your yard sounds lovely! Enjoy it!
@@MarisaAndChew Thanks again. Yes being in SE Florida diving is something I can do relatively easy, and like any hobby there are people that get carried away with gear or locations. I enjoy looking at plants but my house is small, cluttered spaces give me anxiety so one of this and one of that is plenty for me. I actually do put the tops of pineapples in water but once there's roots I give it away to the 1st visit that wants it, that way I make room for the next pineapple.
@@anaziegler6311 I get anxiety from clutter to, but for some reason my plants don't feel like clutter, perhaps BC they're living? If I propogate it's BC the plant needs it, like it's lost two many leaves and essentially needs a haircut to grow back, I replant in the same pot though so I don't have the same exact plant in more than one pot. I know ppl who do it to sell off the extras to help them save to buy expensive plants. I can't be bothered as I live in the country and don't want ppl coming here for pick-up and I don't feel it's worth the time to grow a plant out then drive it to meet a stranger for a few dollars either! If you ever get into fish tanks fluvalstratum is a substrate for certain tanks from what I understand. A lot of fish supply products overlap into plants BC many are trying to get away from soil BC it is dirt and therefore can attract bugs and other pests. I imagine with scuba you're getting the best views though! I think it's cool to do the pineapple gifts! I will grow out green onions and head lettuce in water in the kitchen window. Why not get more for your money these days? 🤷🏼♀️ I need to get more white paint, I like to have all my pots the same color so that it looks more cohesive.
I keep killing off my Rex Begonia babies before I can get them to size. At this point I would try caviar, if only I could get them stable long enough to grow into full round plants, capable of living in the house without the super-high humidity of "incubation" trays, like their mommies.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤣
in my opinion, fluval is super similar to perlite. perlite is cheaper and more accessible too. i'd just stick with that instead
Sheffield Made Plants used perlite!
Fluval stratum is 20€ per bag over here in Italy
😲
