    Hi, i loved this video! I recently bought some polydraw drafting film after struggling with colour pencil on pastel matt and other papers. I did a bit of a scribble on the drafting film and just LOVE the surface. Your video has been really helpful. I have a light hand when i draw so i think this surface will be great for me. Thankyou so much for sharing, you are very talented! I will buy the graffix when it's available but the polydraw will help me to grasp it in the meantime i hope. I also love that you don't hang up on colours, lay the lead on the reference pic and you can get the colours you need. Colour is something i've struggled with, but i overthink it all. Thank you again! You are so talented! 😘

    Love your work. I have been trying lately to get into colored pencil. Its so true you must follow the reference photo. Even do lots of eye balling with a critical eye. As a watercolor realism human portrait artist , I draw easier with my natural perceptions & my trusted proportional divider. The so called easy faster way of tracing has gotten me totally lost in my past. I always end up redrawing the whole thing. With watercolor, its hard to back up. I don't trust my line drawing that much.

    • @ArtbyKarenValentine
      @ArtbyKarenValentine  Год назад

      Thank you Renee! I think everyone works in different ways. What’s successful for one artist may not be the way for another. What frustrates me is when other artists criticize one another for not doing things the way they think it should be done. ( I don’t mean you). I do some tracing to get the main proportions correct, but I would be lost without my proportional divider!
      I have soooo much respect for realism in watercolor. I can’t imagine a less forgiving medium. I’d love to see your work. Do you have an IG account? I am doing colored pencil portraits now too. Much more forgiving than watercolor.

    • @renmuffett
      @renmuffett Год назад +1

      @@ArtbyKarenValentine I don't have a IG account. Not sure what that is. But my work was featured on Doodlewash. I see you have a Facebook group. I can send you the link. Anyway, There is nothing wrong with tracing. It actually helps people learn to draw. I learned drawing well by tracing as a child. The more you do it the more you can do it without help. But its great for back up and very complicated references that would take forever to draw otherwise. Tracing a reference doesn't mean one cannot draw. Its just a tool to get it done faster. The old Masters used mirrors and reflections. DaVinci invented the grid. He used his grid attached to his easel. The most challenging work comes with the painting itself, whether its with color pencil, Pastel, watercolor, acrylic, you name it. Now that I have such painful arthritis in my hands, its hard to draw without suffering. I need every tool I can find. LOL! Thanks so much for your response! I love your channel.

    Karen, Thank you for sharing your process in mostly real time. I like watching the painstaking process of color selection and perhaps reselection, since we all do this... I am just ordering slice craft knives today, have never used them, but they seem wonderful with Colored Pencil on film. Question: if I am using wax based instead of oil based colored pencils, is the layering and removal process the same? I am looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    • @ArtbyKarenValentine
      @ArtbyKarenValentine  Год назад

      Hi Marina. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I personally find to Prismacolors a little to waxy to be used as the predominant pencil on film. It picks up color so we’ll that the softness of Prismas is a hinderance not a help. Caran D’Ache Luminance however work beautifully on film and removal process is exactly the same. Be careful not to erase too much as it can effect the tooth of the film if you need to add more color. It’s been a while since I’ve worked on film and I miss it. I’ve got a new project planned for late in the year or early next year. ❤️❤️❤️

    • @ArtbyKarenValentine
      @ArtbyKarenValentine  Год назад +1

      Hi Vanessa! Any smooth paper will work. I usually have a white and a mid tone that I switch back and forth with. I throw a tan or grey piece behind when I’m working with white pencil so I can see what I’m doing. Smooth Scrapbook paper works well for this. The textured cardstock is fun to use for fur texture.

      Hi there! You must be thinking of someone else you follow on Patreon, because I don’t teach over there. 😁 As far as your question about a backing paper, yes. I usually use white, but you can use anything that suits your piece. You just attach it with a piece of framers tape at the very top, and then frame it behind a mat. But I also have several
      pieces hanging in my studio using a clipboard.
