  • If you've ever driven one of these 4 speed BTR auto cars then you'll know the shifts are pretty slow and soft.
    With this electronic shift kit you can speed and firm up those shifts at the flick of a switch after a fairly simple install, all for under $100, which we'll show you in this video.
    We then took it out for a quick test to see if it does in fact deliver on the above.
    Oh and I of course had to make my life easier by doing away with the provided toggle switch for something more stealth and all together unnecessary!
    Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching and please consider subscribing for more.
    Shift kit was purchased from Shiftkits Australia, and they sell kits for many other Falcons - www.shiftkits.com.au

    Careful pulling off that second connector... mine was super brittle and I snapped the locking lever. Don't stress too much, just use some beafy zip ties to keep it firmly connected.

    Good old electric shiftkits, i fitted one to my AU falcon way back in 2005, we still have the Au still going strong. It shifts so hard when driving in the wet it would turn my single spinner diff in to a lsd lol. Ive got a Gtech that id use to check 0-100 an 1/4mile times. I can say after fitting the shift kit it dropped almost 2 seconds off the 1/4 mile time. Lots of fun.

    • @justkyddingracing9268
      @justkyddingracing9268 4 года назад +1

      2 seconds on a more likely 2 tenths which still really impressive

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 года назад

      @Chris Cumming I completely believe it would spin both in the wet, I was on cool dry roads and it was chirping tyres hard. Will have to watch it in the wet if it's on. And I'd be pumped if it dropped a tenth or 2 off the time, seems possible.

    Love the button counter. Lol.
    A bit of advice too - next time you're anywhere near somewhere that sells them (like a Jaycar or similar) grab one of those soldering iron stands. You will not believe how much better it makes the process. I bit the bullet and bought one after I burned the top of my bench for the third time, and have not burnt anything since. Plus, they hold the iron at the perfect angle for picking it up to solder something, so you actually save time by not having to fart around getting your grip right. There's two main types on the market, a cheap one and a more expensive one. Buy the more expensive one. The base on the cheaper ones isn't heavy enough to hold up the bigger irons without falling over (ask me how I know!), and that tube-style holder they have is junk - you spend too much time trying to locate the hole, and none of us wants that, LOL. The more expensive style with the heavy base (and a little tray for a sponge) and the tapered cast alloy holder on the spring design that leaves the tip in the open air is waaay better. You can just shove the iron somewhere close and it finds its own way due to the taper. They're money well spent.
    Cheers :-)

      Haha I was pretty happy with that too, thanks mate.
      And cheers for the recommendation, anything has to be better than the precut one piece fold out stand thing that comes with them! Don’t do a huge amount of soldering but will look into the stands, always nice to have the right tool there when you need it.

    I thought the shift kit simulates full throttle shifting at part throttle. It basically tricks the transmission (by changing ohm reading) into thinking you have applied full throttle so the shift is quickens up . It wont really effect full throttle shifting .

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  3 года назад +3

      It 100% effects full throttle shifting, maybe even more because this is obviously when you have the most load and power delivery.
      From my understanding you are correct that it tricks the transmission but does so to up the line pressure to a higher level than the stock trans would ever normally see, even at WOT. Shifts are noticeably quicker and firmer.

    When, not if, you do the tune (I have faith in you Browney) give us a run down on the costs involved too. There are many channels on here that "We'll just get it tuned now" like it's as easy as changing a light bulb. I'd be very interested in how much it is and whether the average owner can cover those costs. Especially in these weird and wonderful times. Nice work converting the fog light switch/button.

      @GlensGraphix Thanks Glen, the response has been pretty unanimous so guess I better start searching for tuners to take us in and get the wallet ready to hurt a little after lockdown! Couldn't agree more with you mate on the costs and "we'll just do this... flash back and jobs done" type videos, hopefully I'm doing well to outline the costs and realities without getting too bogged down in them.

    Great work Browney,lol..I have a 2003 BA Fairlane G220 with the factory fitted 3V/5.4Ltr 220kilowatt V8 In it and it goes pretty well...The 4speed auto in it is pretty much the same as all other falcons,but these hi-end/luxury versions seem to be programmed for a far smoother gear change transition.Do the specifications,wiring looms and diagrams that come in the kit for the electronic shift kit you demoed here in this video for us,apply to the V8 equipped falcons,fairlanes and LTD models??? I’m tempted but I’d better be sure is what’s keeping me from going ahead with this great mod,lol Thanks for everything and keep up the great videos buddy😄😄

    If your into pcmtec, I’m pretty sure this would be the same as rescaling all the fields in the s5 global temps to -500 !?? But at least you can switch it on and off ?
    I think you could do a multi tune on pcmtec with low boost 7psi on the street you go plus -150 in the above table and say-500 for the drags and 16 psi ??
    But great to see how to use this shift kit on the b series btr . They are a good box with some extra line pressure, except for the very tall 1st gear! I’ve destroyed one box so far with a turbo conversion. Built box coming and a tune to match !

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  2 года назад

      Yep sure a good tuner could get most, if not all, the same benefits using PCMTec - I'm not one of those but will be using one. I do really like having it as a guaranteed 100% firm when I need and then back to something a little softer when not though, it's pretty violent!
      I quite like them too, especially when they're in there from factory and are so available and cheap. The BTR will be staying/upgraded if needed for now I think.
      Good luck with yours mate 👍... and sorry I was a bit slow getting to this!

      @Rvayy That's it, the brown wire is cut and either end connected to the respective wires coming from the shift kit but NOT back directly to each other. It now runs from the cut wire, to the shift kit, and back to the ECU.

      @David Priestley Damn good engines and pretty tough gearboxes, plenty of other little issues that pop up outside of those but they’re well covered and generally fairly cheap to fix. Don’t know if I’d fit too well in a Corolla either mate!

      Yer.. driving it was different .. heavy steering ? This is normal apparently ? A couple clunks in the front end.. the armrest is missing on p/s and loose on the driver side. .. but overall it's ok for the price

    • @BrowneysGarage

      Yep mines always been fairly heavy steering. Armrests may be easy to sort but if not the door trims are all other the place and fairly cheap. Front end is probably suss out pretty quick, ball joints in these have a reputation for going and the photos of some of the aftermath is bloody scary! Something I should double check myself actually

    What wires did you solder from the traction control button to?

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  3 года назад

      Just to be clear so I’m sure there’s no confusion, I did not connect to any factory wiring on the traction control, my car never had it. The button and and wiring plug I got from another car and wired to control the traction control.
      If you’re looking to reuse a traction control button as I had, there’ll be 4 pins in a line across the top/bottom, depending on which way you look at it (with only 2 on the opposing bottom/top). Connect either of the 2 on the left of this row of 4 to either of the 2 on the other side.
      Hope that helps 👍

      I thought it was different in BF but looking at the pinouts from Haltech (first spot I could find it, support.haltech.com/portal/en/kb/articles/bf-pinout-information) it SEEMS to also be pin 39.

    Unfortunately this mod for me was a no go!
    Installed exactly as instructions said on my BA XT 2003 and when finished, caused my car to enter anti theft or immobilised mode, not sure which, still working on the problem. Will crank but no start.
    Got a forscan cable coming so hopefully can reset everything or at least find the issue. Wire 39 (brownish) and white to connector side, black to harness side. Red to smaller red??? Got me confused why it did not work??? Did you run into any of these issues brownie?? Shiftkit Australia.

      It’s honestly been that long that the video is probably a much better reference than my memory.
      I didn’t have any dramas on this one, all I could think of is to go back and be 100% sure you got the right pin off the PCM plug, maybe use the shot of it here as a reference? (www.thebarraguide.com/wiring/)
      And you definitely tapped into that power/red wire rather than cutting it and connecting one end to the ShiftKit loom? Basic I know but just double checking, it’s normally something small that I mess up myself!
