Update on Michael Swango: Captured. After the arrest warrant was issued for Swango, he fled to Zimbabwe. In November 1994, he was hired by the Zimbabwe Association of Church Hospitals. About a year later, patients at hospitals there began to show signs of poisoning. In July 1995, he was suspended from practice at one of the hospitals. Soon after, he was accused of more deaths and poisonings there. As a result, he planned to flee to Saudi Arabia. After securing a new job there in June 1997, he headed to the United States to renew his work visa. He arrived at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on June 27. An alert customs agent ran his name through the computer and found the warrant against him. He was arrested by INS agents soon after. Swango was charged with defrauding a goverment agency and making false statements on a government hospital job application. In September 1997, he was also charged with illegally prescribing narcotics to patients. In January 1998, he was charged in Zimbabwe with poisoning seven patients, five of whom died. In March, he pleaded guilty to the fraud and false statement charges. In June, he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison. While he served time on those charges, U.S. federal prosecutors had about three years to develop a murder case against him that could put him away for life. Prosecutors noted that proving murder was much more difficult in Swango’s case because it was initially assumed that his victims had died of natural causes. They had the bodies of several victims exhumed and new toxicology tests were performed. The tests showed poisonous chemicals in the bodies. Swango’s own diaries also helped seal his fate. Page after page of his personal writings were filled with morose texts like, “I love it, sweet, husky, close smell of an indoor homicide…” and "[murder is] the only way I have of reminding myself that I’m still alive." Prosecutors determined, based on his writings, that he liked to kill people. For him, the thrill was doing the killing and getting away with it. It was difficult to establish a pattern with him because he was an opportunistic killer; he would kill whenever he had the chance to. On July 11, 2000, just a few days before he was supposed to be released from federal prison, Swango was charged with the murders of Thomas Sammarco, George Siano, and Aldo Serini, along with assault against Barron Harris (they were unable to prove that the injection of toxins led to his death). They had all been patients of the Long Island Veteran's Administration Hospital, and they all had been in the care of Swango. In two of the cases, he falsely told coworkers that the patients' families had issued "do not resucitate" orders. Soon after, Swango was also charged with the January 1984 murder of nineteen-year-old gymnast Cynthia Ann McGee, who had died at the Ohio State University Hospital while recovering from a bike accident. A nurse witnessed him entering Cynthia's room with a syringe shortly before she lapsed into a coma and died. Prosecutors allege that he was also responisble for poisoning Rena, but he could not be charged because the statute of limitations had passed. In September 2000, Swango pleaded guilty to three counts of murder in Thomas, George, and Aldo's cases. He admitted to intentionally killing them by "administering toxic substances which [he] knew were likely to cause death." He was given three life sentences without the possibility of parole. In October, he also pleaded guilty to killing Cynthia; he admitted to injecting her with a deadly dose of potassium that caused cardiac arrest. In return for the plea deal, Zimbabwe agreed not to pursue charges and the United States agreed not to pursue the death penalty. He is now imprisoned at Supermax ADX Florence, and is in 23-hour solitary confinement. Investigators and author James Stewart note that circumstantial evidence links Swango to at least thirty-five deaths and twenty non-fatal poisonings; they fear that he may be responsible for over sixty poisoning deaths, including several deaths in Zimbabwe and the United States. One of those alleged victims was twenty-two-year-old Anna Mae Popka, who died under his care in 1984. His mother sued him, claiming that he was responsible for her death. However, he was never criminally charged. Another alleged victim was twenty-one-year-old Ricky DeLong, who died on January 20, 1984, at the Ohio State University Hospital. Swango "found" his body; an autopsy later determined that he died after a ball of gauze was placed in his throat. His family also sued Swango, claiming that he was responsible for the death. Stewart also believes that Swango was responsible for the 1993 death of Swango's fiancee, Kristin Kinney, who committed suicide after suffering from symptoms consistent with arsenic poisoning. After she died, arsenic was found in her hair. unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Michael_Swango?so=search

The medical industry in the USA has had repeated cases of butt covering, incompetence over the years. You can read about a pediatric nurse killing children. When the hospital and staff had suspicions they just transferred her to another place in another state and she continued killing kids until caught.
Janelle 09 Indeed! I was shocked to see earlier today that Netflix has rebooted it. The article said that the Netflix reboot of UM will be hour long episodes, focusing on a single mystery per episode.
Swango... I just talked to someone personally involved in this case... Unsolved Mysteries left out quite a bit... Like 44 of his other murders... Gotta say I'm disappointed everyone kept covering shit up for this guy....
@Jeremy Medlock No I did she shared a patient with him... Said she hated the guy before she found out he was actually killing people.... She told me about the murders were closer to 44...
Lovely. I see that after I had finished typing my comment down below that either RUclips or my phone had prompted to the next episode. And so, the comment(s) I made below are for the previous episode. 🙄 I found it eerily coincidental that David and Christie's (The Wismers) wedding was the same day and year (June22, 1996) as my wedding date. Really cool.I'm glad they found their way back to each other after so many years, and that they found Katie and are reunited as a family. Wishing them all the best for happiness, health, love, and prosperity. 😎👍❤ I also love the bond that both Joe and Sammy shared, and the fact that they were (also) reunited after Desert Storm. I sincerely hope their friendship remains strong. 😎👍🍻
There is a huge cultural problem among doctors and nurses where no one wants to voice their suspicions about their colleagues. Almost every killer medical professional has several people around them at work who refuse to report or even talk about what they heavily suspect is going on. It sucks. A lot of people could have been and still can be saved if these people would speak out.
@@melissalee2872 I actually could not finish watching it. Don't know what happened to Moses and Lila, and I don't actually care either. 2 horrible people making money off of bird slavery. That bad Dr Swango doing poorly in med school, yet still a staff doctor afterwards : doctors graduating at the top of their class aren't shy about making that known, but people need to remember that those at the bottom of their classes are also doctors out there somewhere.. .good luck !

It was probably Lazarus syndrome. It's rare but does happen. They worked on the baby for a long time and did everything they could. They were being cautious not to get the family's hopes up which is why they initially kept insisting he was deceased.
That doctor was obviously putting stuff in people's IVs and then these people are going to accept food that he brought ? Jesus and and we count on these people to take care of us. Smh

Michael Swango is just like the guy whose story is partly told in the _Deadly Intentions_ movies. He got a job at a VA hospital/center he never should have had...
Very strange that the investigators thought Gobin was not suspicious in this interview. Moses and Lila were "abducted," but Gobin saw it all go down and was safe. Safe enough that he was able to explain to his colleague what had happened, but did not go to the police. Then, he had Moses's identification on him (why??) as he fled the state after his employers were "kidnapped." If that doesn't scream guilt or at least accomplice, I do not know what does
MrBigrobmjca3 how so? Your god almost lets a baby die. Deprives him of oxygen to the point of brain damage. That baby grew into a child and then young adult confined to a wheelchair. And eventually dies aged 24. What kind deity would do that?
You definitely live with half the glass empty. They were given 24 rich years with there little boys. That may be short but to the parents that is a rich gracious time God gave back to them. Investigators now believe that Hair Gobin was responsible for Moses and Lila's disappearances. Moses's mother claims that in October of 1993, Gobin stole $29,000 from Moses and fled in one of their vans. When he was found in New York, Moses agreed to drop theft charges against him and let him return to his job. Interestingly, when Gobin was pulled over in Georgia after the disappearances, a videotape about changing one's identity was found in the van, along with several rare birds and tortoises. In March 2011, authorities tracked Hari Gobin to Jersey City, New Jersey. He was living under the alias "Roy Smith," However, when detectives arrived at his workplace, he had fled. Gobin is now believed to be in the Philadelphia area.
@@BIGBamBam86 Dr. Carl Weiss is the alleged assassin of The Kingfish, Huey Long. Long was a noted Louisiana governor and senator planning a bid for President of the United States. Had he succeeded, he might have been one of the greatest and most controversial American Presidents to hold office. However, he was killed on September 8, 1935, in a shooting that remains controversial to this day. Huey only went one year of law school, but by the age of twenty-nine, he had successfully argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. His company was probably afraid of getting into a lawsuit (if he gave some of the birds the wrong food for their species, etc.) so they told him to do nothing. It's stupid but you see this happening all the time.
I know the delivery guy was busy but WHY did he NOT feed the birds??!! not even when he returned an saw his delivery was still at the front gate did he feed them!! and ok, there were a LOT of them but he didn't even bother to call the most local Audubon Society to get them to try & help out!! what an @sshole!! poor baby birds. they are SO brilliant, precious & sentient!! and so many of them DIED from starvation & dehydration. who DOES that??!!

After the broadcast, a viewer called the telecenter; he claimed that he had been in jail with Michael on the day of his disappearance. He also claimed that Michael appeared to have been beaten and shot in the leg. It is not known if the caller was ever located or if the information was ever verified. In January of 1990, Michael's family had him declared legally dead. In April of 1992, three miles from where Lisa's car was discovered, a skull fragment was found. In June, a coroner determined that it belonged to Michael based on X-rays of his head. Police are now investigating the case as a "possible homicide", although the cause of death could not be determined. After a series of investigations into Cooley and Misencik by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigations, no charges were ever filed. The officers later filed a libel suit against a magazine which printed an article about Michael's disappearance. They claimed that the article unfairly accused them of being involved in the disappearance. The suit was settled in March of 1990 with the officers receiving $50,000. Sadly, Michael's father, Maurice Rosenblum, died in 2008. Police Chief Aldo Gaburri passed away in 1997 at the age of 76.

I'm sorry but as an animal lover I wouldn't have left the food ... if the food was still outside the gate and the birds were clearly in distress I would have fed them myself. 😡
You can see the series' departure from film on the interviews but still using it for the re-enactments. Film's expensive but there's definitely a drop in production value. It's too bad because the series was losing its charm.
I never noticed til u said something there are more reenactments. Now that u say it. Thanks for peeing in my wheaties lol cause now I know I'm gunna be watching for the differences.
That's probably because at this point the series had switched from NBC to CBS. Everything was drop in production value including the horrible theme. CBS kept it on for a couple years and then series ultimately moved to Lifetime for the remainder of its original run.
The show was on a decline from near the start, as they did less cases on murders, missing persons, arson and fraud, and more on "lost loves" and supernatural woo. The show lost its edge.
Yeah they were lol. That’s always been one of my favorite segments before they did find each other and now have regular contact. But I think the parents just wanted their daughter to have a normal life, and were afraid if he came back around maybe it would complicate things for her. At least I hope it was out of love, but they were still wrong.

The medical industry in the USA has had repeated cases of butt covering, incompetence over the years.
You can read about a pediatric nurse killing children. When the hospital and staff had suspicions they just transferred her to another place in another state and she continued killing kids until caught.
Every case is important but it was really difficult to see those poor animals suffer.
Back in the day before the internet was a big thing in the 90s I had a chance to chat with the great Robert Stack, may the great man rest in peace. ✌️

Janelle 09 Indeed! I was shocked to see earlier today that Netflix has rebooted it. The article said that the Netflix reboot of UM will be hour long episodes, focusing on a single mystery per episode.
I watch it every day

sure, beauty!
Swango... I just talked to someone personally involved in this case... Unsolved Mysteries left out quite a bit... Like 44 of his other murders... Gotta say I'm disappointed everyone kept covering shit up for this guy....
Michael Swango: A Marine Corps Vet/VA doctor who's father was a senior advisor to CORDS/PHOENIX in Vietnam interestingly.
Jeremy Medlock Lol. Folks trip me out.
@Jeremy Medlock why is it so hard to believe ? These were regular people who were victims of this creep.

@Jeremy Medlock No I did she shared a patient with him... Said she hated the guy before she found out he was actually killing people....
She told me about the murders were closer to 44...

I found it eerily coincidental that David and Christie's (The Wismers) wedding was the same day and year (June22, 1996) as my wedding date. Really cool.I'm glad they found their way back to each other after so many years, and that they found Katie and are reunited as a family. they suspect the Dr. was poisoning patients and still ate his food at the first hospital?????
lol i was just about to post that
I would never have eaten food prepared by someone who I suspected of deliberately causing deaths in a hospital.
There is a huge cultural problem among doctors and nurses where no one wants to voice their suspicions about their colleagues. Almost every killer medical professional has several people around them at work who refuse to report or even talk about what they heavily suspect is going on. It sucks. A lot of people could have been and still can be saved if these people would speak out.
lol I looked at the comment section to find this comment
Exactly. That hospital is absolute trash . 5 dead and no investigation
Those poor birds! That was heartbreaking.
I know...as an animal lover it made me so sad to see those poor birds lying there dead. What a horrible way to go, starving to death. 😢
@@melissalee2872 I actually could not finish watching it. Don't know what happened to Moses and Lila, and I don't actually care either. 2 horrible people making money off of bird slavery. Just wished the birds had not suffered.
PS: Can't stand the way UM depicted them as loving people towards their birds. It was a business! They made money by breeding birds who will never be free. They will live in a prison for their entire lives just to entertain some idiot who will buy one from those two horrible breeders.
PPS: Update: I decided to watch it. " The birds were her world" Lol. She loved them so much that seeing these majestic birds in a prison every day did not bother her???! Give me an FN break. That is NOT LOVE!

That bad Dr Swango doing poorly in med school, yet still a staff doctor afterwards : doctors graduating at the top of their class aren't shy about making that known, but people need to remember that those at the bottom of their classes are also doctors out there somewhere.. .good luck !
Michael Swango: A Marine Corps Vet/VA doctor who's father was a senior advisor to CORDS/PHOENIX in Vietnam interestingly.
Kate Quinn, I have often reminded people there are many physicians who graduated at the bottom of their class who still managed to pass state boards. Some of them can be scary dangerous, especially if they are bad at diagnostics or slow to refer to specialtists in the event they are involved in primary care.

Media Sawdust I definitely agree
That's probably because at this point the series had switched from NBC to CBS. Everything was drop in production value including the horrible theme. CBS kept it on for a couple years and then series ultimately moved to Lifetime for the remainder of its original run.
The show was on a decline from near the start, as they did less cases on murders, missing persons, arson and fraud, and more on "lost loves" and supernatural woo. The show lost its edge.
