great material as always. But god, do i hope Shi Zhiyong goes to the olympics...

I think Huan Hua,Li Dayin and Li Fabin are going (Tian Tao isn’t putting nearly enough effort to go,and Shi potentially won’t prove himself in Thailand)

An important factor impacting Shi Zhiyong (69kg/73kg lifter) is his age (30yrs) after almost 10 years of competitive lifting, so rest has become increasingly more important to him. It's not about trying to maintain a streak particularly when he's been recovering from injury. Rahmat is 23 and competes as a 73/81kg lifter. His progression from 151->158kg (snatch) and 192->202kg (c&j) as a 73kg lifter in one year is quite interesting. They are both at very different stages in their careers.
Comparing the two lifters Shi vs Rahmat at 73kg:
    Best snatch: 169kg vs 159kg
    Best c&j:198kg vs 204kg (73kg) / 209kg (81kg)
    Best total: 364kg vs 363kg (73kg) / 362kg (81kg)
Considering Shi's record and the recently imposed limitation on the number of lifters in Olympics weightlifting, I think Shi has done enough as one of the world's greatest weightlifters in history and champion lifter in 2 different weight categories (2 Olympic gold medals, 3 world championships). He was so dominant at the height of his career that no one could even come close and he got bored.
EDITED: Rahmat numbers corrected for 2024 (his 209kg was when he was 81kg).

I agree he’s been one of the world’s greatest but I’ll bet his ego needs a little more stroking by gaining a third gold especially sine teammate Liu Xiaojun got his third. He would be the sixth to do so.

One of the worst inequities of the current system is that one of the two great Indonesians won’t be at Paris. Even if Shi is back to his former level I would still consider him an underdog to Rahmat. Rahmat has brought his snatch up in recent months and I’m convinced he can go beyond the 204 record of his. Remember he did 209 and cleaned 214 as a very light 81 lifter. Seb I really like what you’re doing with this project; summary and analysis of Olympic classes every couple days. Looks like it will stretch out right to the start of World Cup.

Also Gor beat him in a Junior comp in same time frame. If you want to say Lasha is undefeated since he came back from suspension in 2015 and became LASHA!! Say that. Karlos Nasar trails Li Dayin by only a kilo and looks like he can put up a 400kg total.
