John Smyth died in 2018 whilst in South Africa. Welby claims here that he was assured in 2013 that the authorities in South Africa were following up but that he didn't investigate and corroborate that enough. By the time the investigation revealed that hadn't happened Smyth was dead so the only thing left was for an internal enquiry. These are his claims, I'm really not sure what I believe of them.
@ His claims are false & in contradiction to the previous interview. Smyth was alive in 2013 ALL information should have been turned over to the police immediately & victims made a priority because but the church decided to draw proceedings out as long as possible & cover as many arses as possible to obscure justice and stop the church from being sued for their involvement.

The report itself is clear that the archbishop must have known much earlier, and faiiled to deal with this in an appropriate way. How an Archbishop can dance around facts like this is shameful. I He says that this is a shaming failure, and that he failed. Why compound this with a failure of leadership, a failure of fellowship. The arrogance in thinking that he is best placed to deal with the fallout - compunds his previous actions with even more failure and hubris. The section on the contribuitions to the 'mission' is slippery, one version for the inquiry and one for the news media. This is probably the worst and most disengenuous interview by a public figure since the Prince Andrew interview. I doubt given the arrogance on display here that the Archbishop will resign and do the right thing. His entire story seems to say that he hoped the problem would go away and then hoped that it would all go away. There wasn't a system? You are the senior figure CREATE the system. If the Archbishop of Canterbury cannot work out what a 'failure of personal and moral responsibility' means - then one has to question if he is fit to hold the position? 👍Exactly! He was given the luxury of resigning. He didn't deserve that.
It would be better and right for the present Archbishop to resign immediately...
He is not a religious leader. Chasing the power instead with no honesty or integrity.
it would be better for him to leave the country how about that? damn you christians are thick😂
The question is why he did nothing when he knew this evil acts. Power? Fear?
Why he is still lying?
P R I D E the worst of the 7 deadly sins. Can't admit he failed miserably.
He's acting as if this is the first case!!! They should already have had safeguarding systems in place for these sexual criminals...Disgusting!! NO EXCUSES!!!!
He's acting like a devious politician and we aren't fooled.
This excellent interviewer is so clued in and directly relentless in her questioning so as to expose this somewhat alarming and cringeworthy display of defensiveness and arrogance. Insufficient curiosity is a savage indictment given the seriousness of the abuse and he is plainly not good enough to oversee and implement any remedial action (he admits his own incompetence in the interview). Yet he justifies continuing by constantly referring to dates of knowledge like a lying politician when it should be about what’s best for safeguarding. My heart bleeds for the victims and I feel sorry for good local parish men and women who deserve better and do better for their communities. Totally selfish.

Resign!
Typical elitist behaviour not doing the honourable thing and resigning.

Withholding information of child abuse is a crime no matter who you are.
Any other job and he would have been sacked for negligence, why is the church special?
It isn't special, that's the point.
For me the church is a no go. It don't mean I am not a believer. It's the church that's wandered away from god.
Or... God is a major kink. And keeps calling dodgy bastards to the cloth

The irony this man stands in the Lords spouting about humanity, and he covered it up Shameful!!! Do the right thing and resign!!!!!!!!
It’s like watching the Prince Andrew interview all over again!!
‘Extended interview’?
All I want to hear from this hypocritical WEF agent is the shortest possible statement:
“I resign.”
And what good will that do?
@@AllanHinde-mb2pr he will lose his position and status hopefully.

It should not take 10 years for something so horrific to be dealt with. The Archbishop has failed horrifically. He will be severely dealt with by THE Judge. 😢
Oh the posture of faux concern, the over-elaboration of irrelevant details, the evasion, the sanctimony! Nearly as good as Andrew, just as transparent! He , like all WEF stooges, is complicit in degrading the Church. He was put there for that reason, just as Charles amended his oath. All in the same Club!
"the over-elaboration of irrelevant details". Yes, well said. That's exactly what's going on here. And it screams guilt.
I can’t stand that woke man. One of the worst men in the C of E church. He should resign. He’s a nuisance. Interfering old fool. Go!
Welby Must Go....
Agreed. This is not a man of God.
“I don’t lie on interviews’ ‘If I can’t tell the truth I don’t answer the question’ WTF!!
😮
Time to go.
Welby felt shocked in many ways etc
WHAT ABOUT Smyth's victims?
Didn't he question what Smyth was doing in Zimbabwe and South Africa to young men and boys? He was charged with Culpable Homicide there following the death of a young man.
Why did he send contributions to his 'Missions' in Africa? And exchange Christmas Cards with Smyth at that time?
Why does Welby say 'not made aware FORMALLY''. What's 'formally got to do with it?
It is SO WRONG.
😢😢😢😢
He's the worst kind of Tory minister in a dog collar.
“ We were told 9 months it took 5 years” utter bullshit. Any public office, any work environment if this happened it’d be a sacking. You find out why it’s taking so long on any project any proposal any documents.
Welby Knew All About It.......Must go.
he says he won't.
Prince Andrew wearing a dog collar.😂 Welby also doesn't sweat and was at a pizza express at the time.
Resign immediately,
@28:48 "If this report was a lethal blow to the institution, so be it. God will raise up another institution."
But apparantly he has to stay in place because he's irreplaceable!
Great work by Cathy Newman and all at Channel 4 News for investigating and persuing this story.
He still hasn't called out the genocide in Gaza.
Oh, shut up for once .He hasn't called out the abuse that lay at the hands by Islam from the 700 right up to the 19th century, 250 million people died because of Muslims trying to conquer the world but that's not spoke about -.......o...
Horrible unGodly mam.
its rooted in christianity
George Carey also didn't follow up abuse allegations when he was archbishop. Who's in charge of Ethics round there?
No one. There's no stringent system yet.
As a Christian, im sure we do not acknowledge him as even a Christian to begin with. Just look at the state of the CoE, he should have resigned years ago frankly.
What a prk, No if something happens you hand the nonce over to the police not an internal enquiry.
'I am not going to resign for this '..... 'FOR THIS'. Says it all.
he can't as it wasn't his crime I still have to deal with abuse as a child am 81
Who are you talking about?

@juntus89 why shouldn't all religous faiths not be investigated for sexual abuse name one that has not been found guilty of covering it up
ALL religions! Ghandi slept in the nude with young girls (including his niece) to "test" his chastity. I'm sorry, but how many times do you need to test whether you will sexually assault a child and family member?? How many times did he fail this test??
I follow the Buddha darhma and not even Buddhism is immune to these types of crimes. It's not an issue or indictment of the religion or philosophy itself, but rather an indictment of the human condition and our society as a species.
@@deanjames2476 What are talking about? Religions don't commit crimes - people do. You don't even realize how absurd what you are saying is. Sexual assault would continue no matter what the government did. And who would pay for the investigation into millions of religious officials? The tax payer. There are over 2000 religions on earth you plant pot 🙄
@juntus89 so religions covering up sexual abuse is not a crime in your world what planet do you live on
“Was it a lie because the victims say it was?” No it wasn’t, I don’t lie on interviews, if I can’t tell the truth I don’t answer the question 😂
A godly man would resign not cling on like a barancle.
That's almost a portmanteau of barnacle and carbuncle 👏🏻 Clever 🕊
An interview as shockingly disturbing as the interview with Prince Andrew.
I love the way all the focus is on Christian institutions. What about the rampant abuse in secular schools and the rest of the religious schools? Seems kind of suspect.
He should go.
This is why faith should always remain personal and never subject to an organised and corruptible institution
where deference to the pedestal becomes more important than the deity itself. Shame on you Welby!
SHAME ON YOU WELBY. RESIGN!
He said he didn’t know. Well he didn’t want to know. The simple fact is this man and others thought the Church’s reputation more important than the welfare of children. But it’s generous to say his recall is a little conflicted. He thinks he shouldn’t resign maybe he should ask the victims not his friends on that matter.
Where does the buck stop? To directly quote Welby, ' I don't lie on interviews. If I can't tell the truth, I don't answer the question'. Hmm...
Cathy Newman, what an intelligent reporter. She really had Welby on the 'back foot'. Outstandingly good journalism. Love it!
I hope for healing to the survivors of Church abuse of young people. Stay strong.
Love and peace.
'in 2013, I think." I question every hesitation in his 'considered' resposnse. He was always resposible, only now being questioned and held to account. He seems obviously insincere. imho, of course. He should instantly resign, or be fired. Fake, fake, fake.
If Prince Andrew was an archbishop
Exactly
He know and did nothing to stop it he is a disgrace and needs to go horribly man he new and old nothing
I rekon he will live long and carry this burden for the rest of his life,
The main question we should be asking is what did Smyth have on the Archbishop
Good one! Archbishop Vigano famously said that anyone who is not corrupt cannot be blackmailed.
"I don't lie on interviews...." Call me naive, but as a holy man, surely you shouldn't lie AT ALL!
This is a world class interview by Cathy Newman. One of the best examples of journalism. Iconic.
The report itself is clear that the archbishop must have known much earlier, and faiiled to deal with this in an appropriate way. How an Archbishop can dance around facts like this is shameful. I
He says that this is a shaming failure, and that he failed.
The interview is shocking, obfuscation, self-serving platitudes and why comission a report when you have no intenion of acting on their findings?
A shocking and shameful display.
Well said. I've not seen the report, however this interview is a mirror image to the woolly mental gymnastics we saw with Prince Andrew. He comes across as dancing around and it's very irritating. I'm not buying his contrition and he won't be winning any oscars for this performance.
Pedophilic abuse was a rite of passage in the church and this guy is just as culpable which is why he condoned their ungodly behaviour and serial abuse of children. He seems untruthful.
They venerate human sacrifice and torture. Raping children is nothing.
Where is the petition?
If he withdraws they could find an Archbishop who is a Christian
This man needs to go for the good of the church.
For the good of humanity
Hiding, abaiding, and abbeting a criminal makes you a criminal = jail time
Vile, vile enabler. The police should investigate what else he’s hiding. No moral fibre.
What is he thinking of, refusing to resign is just making his position worse. Staying on is the opposite of accepting responsibility.
He should be in jail for covering this up.
He said he may have contributed to the mission, he isn't sure
Resignation or remain, do the right thing for the victims of Smyth.
An out and out liar
Hilarious to watch him go through the mental gymnastics to absolve himself of this situation
George Carlin was right.
So was Dawkins, Hitchens, Sagan, Harris, Hawkins etc. etc. etc.
