Good example of the importance of correct and equalized u-joint working angles! If your vibration did not occur until high driveshaft speeds under a load, the difference between your u-joint working angles must have been at the maximum allowed; the acceleration caused the pinion nose to raise just enough to take it out of equalization and give you a second order driveshaft speed related vibration. Merry Christmas from Utah!

I believe the term you are looking for is "phase"
Sounds unusual like you were thinking. The term has different meanings though.
In this case what you are looking for is
"The 2 u-joints need to be 'in phase' with each other"
If they are at different angles they are 'out of phase"
    Good info

I remember reading about driveshaft alignment and vibration in an automotive tech class. One would think that the U joint would compensate for the difference in the flange angle. However, if they are not parallel you get a vibration. Used to run into those problems back in the day when we put air shocks in the hot rods to get the big wheels in the back (high school days) we're better educated today :) back then no one cared about vibration....., just the horsepower and far you could lay a strip of rubbe!

Ralf V From what I've seen, Paul is more numbers, electrical, scopes, etc. kind of guy. Yes, he does hands on repairs too, but something like this is more on the mechanical aspect of things, as to where he's on the diagnostic & driver's side of it.
How often do you come across something like this in the electrical diagnostic end? Never. It's only when he had a personal experience did he have the opportunity to delve further into the mechanical drive side. As I'm sure you're aware, transmission & differentials are a whole different animal, which to me, it's more likely a trans guy would know this as common knowledge over engine or diagnostic guy. Just saying & giving my personal opinions (not trying to be "ranty" lol).

Erg! Yeah, driveline angles are critical, and even small variances can cause big changes. There's a great short video illustrating it here: ruclips.net/video/gmV4qwLfOMY/видео.html
I've seen things like worn suspension cause driveline vibrations, and it's one of those things that kicked my butt 'cause I just wasn't as aware of it as I am now. A driveline angle gauge is priceless when you're changing suspension geometry. :)

I know I'm 6yrs late on this but I'm hoping it helps those with a 2019 or older Silverado.
I would get a highway speed vibration after my level kit was installed. I replaced most of the suspension, including CV axles and hubs. Even switched from the 3" tapered blocks after watching this video. Nothing worked, the vibration was still there. Right when I was losing hope, I saw an old forum post saying he had the same issue, nearly all same parts replaced, and finally he switched from 4wd auto to 2wd high and VOILA... vibration gone.

Interesting way to diagnose. Why not use an angle finder or a digital protractor to measure/compare pinion angle to transmission output shaft angle. Additionally, shims are available in different degrees to make adjustments if the angle cut or straight cut lift blocks by themselves won't cure the issue.

do you have a 2 piece rear driveshaft? any lifts that I have done where I work, if there was a vibration the was because of drive line angle, we always put spacers on the steady bearing, so it straightened out the driveline. I've never heard of changing the blocks to straight cut ones. usually any BDS lift I have done always came with spacers for the steady bearing to straighten the driveline. but not every truck needs them.

@@ScannerDanner I thought about doing that but since I ordered flat blocks I might just wait until they come. The original 1 inch blocks that came off the truck were straight cut aluminum blocks. I appreciate the advice and your video is great I would never have new about this potential problem. I even took it to my local shop that deals with 4x4 lifted trucks and they went for a ride with me and they said it didn't sound like tire but it was definitely strange. Now they didn't have time that day to dig into my truck so I figured I would try this first and if I have no success I will bring it back to them.

1/8" difference in taper height is not going to matter. I am running tapered blocks with no issues, but they are fabricated (2014 Chevy Silverado 1500). That makes all the difference. Tapered cast blocks will cause vibration

@@ScannerDanner well asking around and talking to several professional four-wheel drive companies I have found out the more defined answer. Anytime you go over 3 in you want to run the tapered blocks due to the fact your pinion needs to roll back in place anything 3 in and under the flat blocks are fine. This is probably why the flat blocks work on yours versus the tapered blocks work on mine. I have a 5-in lift. Best thing to do before buying a lift kit is to take your drive shaft out and check your angles to determine which blocks will work best to keep your angles correct.

You are correct but when the attack angles are not the same for both ends of the drive shaft and contrary to logic, the input and output shafts of the drive shaft are turning at different speeds. This causes "at some speed" harmonic distortion between the output shaft of the transmission and input shaft of the differential. Here is a video that explains: ruclips.net/video/Idk3BVDVHq4/видео.html

On my 08 Silverado I have 5" rough country lift blocks and the angle cut on them are pretty extreme. I had to use 6° angle shims to counteract the angle. Bad part about that is when the blocks have that much of an angle cut added with the angle shims, it put my axle back about 1-2" from where it is intended to sit. I didn't realize that until I was on my way home one day and some *sshole slams on his brakes causing me to slam on mine and my driveshaft yoke slipped out of the rear of the transmission. Luckily it didn't do any real damage but all I really have to say is screw lift blocks. Unless anyone has any advice that I'm failing to realize, I'm switching to lifted leaf springs and hope that fixes the issue.
