This video really helped me to understand more about Swift. I too only want to work 5 days a week. Also only in the daytime primarily. I have been in the construction trucking field and need to get the training to move into 53 ft tractor trailer. To get a great driving job here in Sacramento I need at least 6 months to a year of experience. Even though I have been driving 18 wheels tractor and two bottom dump trailers for at least 7 years! I am worried about the money ( because I make a lot during the season), but like you I am wanting experience. When you said there are terminals with facilities for the drivers I felt more secure. Tony, was very impressed with the honest presentation. Also liked what you said at the end about pay after 2 years at SWIFT etc. expressed by your opinion. Really good presentation and very informative!
Thank you for your video..very informative..will be watching more from you. Trying to decide whether to go into trucking as a final career for the last part of my working life before retirement. Swift/Knight Transportation is on my short list should I make the jump and honestly mostly because of their many terminals is a main factor-so huge thank you for hitting on that subject.
I'd say it wouldn't hurt to get licensed and jump in the seat to try it out. If it doesn't work out you could always get a truck & trailer and put a driver in the seat while you manage the operation. Maybe something to look into, good luck!

Really helpfull, what's said during that break part in the middle of this video. ~That is super helpfull, feels good to know this. ... ~and I will remember this! =] 💜
Great video, I am looking to go with Swift to work on gaining experience and my aunt recommended them to me since she used to do their walmart dedicated routes for them. I am looking to do the western regional with them hopefully setting my home terminal out of Sumner, WA.
Funny to hear this was recorded at Lathrop, that's my home terminal despite me being from Houston TX. I'm on my 2nd week of training with a mentor and so far this has been pretty accurate. Would be cool if I ran into you over the road one day.
I really want to get into trucking. I love driving in general and I'm a real gear head. I think tractor trailers are so cool. I am super bummed that it's all automatics though. With how impossible it is becoming to find manuals in 4 wheelers it was my hope that semi trucks would be the last haven for manuals. I have never personally owned an automatic and never will as long as possible, I love manuals. Like I said I love driving and I love it more than anything, automatics really take away from the experience imho. Driving just isn't the same without the additional connection between you and the machine.
I completely understand your point of view, but I have to disagree. I find with manual I cannot enjoy the drive because I need to maintain speed and proper gearshifting, whereas in automatic I can actually enjoy the different views of different locales. That's just me though, I know some people are very good at multitasking and what not
@@Lalo_thr I totally understand! The first thing that came to my mind was how I got my first manual car 15yrs ago. I was the idiot who just went out and bought one without anyone teaching me or any prior knowledge. I was pissing everyone on the road off. Stalling in intersections, I remember getting so flustered with having the extra movement to think about. I know it’s different for everyone but after a couple months of sticking to it it became muscle memory. Now I hardly have to think about it at all, it just happens and my mind is free to think about whatever else. If I wouldn’t have been forced to stick with it by just purchasing a manual, I probably would have quit in those first few weeks.
Thanks for the videos im going school at swift your right dont have to find parking cause I feel ya when it come to parking cause they be filled up keep it up with videos

Thank you for your video. I’m planning on signing on in June. I’m currently an elementary teacher leaving the education career. I’m looking forward to OTR trucking.
Driving Uber and Lyft typically can make 1500 -1800 in a week. Everyday home . I got my cdl A license . Now looking the money now on truck makes me not to go . Any suggestion will be highly appreciated .
1500-1800 grossed? what about fuel, maintenance? depreciation? Are you putting money away for a new car to put to work after this one dies out? Trucking requires sacrifice. Sacrifice being away from home, your loved ones, friends and family. But if done right, trucking for a couple years can bring you a great amount of wealth to use elsewhere. Money that can be used in real estate, restaurant franchises, car sales, truck sales, maybe even obtaining a local dedicated lane that gets you home every day. But are you willing to make the sacrifice? Not everyone is. Good luck my friend.
@@Mirage_ Thank you so much for your kind suggestion . Hope you the best . Do you have any Snapchat to add you or talk to you about joining trucking job ?

In CDL school currently, a Swift recruiter did a presentation, he was well spoken and made a good pitch. The compensation was accurate, the weekly avgs were pretty impressive tho. Seeing different presenters everyday in order to keep an open mind and different options.
@JOSHWONDUDE My presenter told us around that number, weekly pay obviously depending on whether your OTR, dedicated, local. Remember they’re selling themselves to us bcuz demand is thru the roof. Listen to everyone and make the best decision for you and yours
@JOSHWONDUDE Depends on your experience, what you're hauling, are you getting 500 miles a day or only 250(higher cpm with lower daily mileage) are you working a full 70hr week with avg 500 miles a day? Lots of variables. In my circumstance, I brought home 1k gross, 800 net working 5 days a week. If you land a port job with swift you can make $375 gross a day which is way more than 1400 a week, but those positions are far and few. Good luck!
Go to a dedicated account. Made 68k my first year with swift Walmart dedicated. Making even more this year. Gross about 2k a week on a 6 day work week.
$750 to 2500miles was hypothetical, I should've used real numbers but 2500 miles at the CPM they had me at (.50) would have been 1250. Only problem is it would've taken me all 70hrs that week to drive 2500 miles. Unfortunately I value my life outside of work a little more than that. Good catch though!
@@Mirage_ that's about $18/hr flat rate. It's about same as a Mcdonald worker for 70 hrs week. No CDL needed, no dangerous work and be home everyday. These Mega carriers chew out all the new truckers and spit them out on the side road. At the same time, they cry on news media on how we gave the drivers biggest raise ever but we still have driver shortages.
@@Mirage_ this is what fuel these Mega carriers. Nothing will change as long as driver throw themselves for them. Even nowadays, locals are willing take drivers fresh off school
I used to bring my own food out for the week, dry foods, fruits, hot pockets, burritos, frozen home cooked meals, so I wouldn't spend too much eating out at truck stops. A single meal at a truck stop can range from $3-$10 depending on what you get. Clothing, I'd bring 2 weeks worth of clothes for a week out (extra just in case) and do laundry at home. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Good day. I am within my first 6 months of solo driving with Swift and have not received at least $1000 a week. I work at least 5 days a week and never turn down any loads. I’ve talked to my driver leader and numerous other senior people at the terminal and get the complete runaround every time. It’s completely frustrating at this point of time. I’ve even had one week where I only took home $400. Nobody seems to want to help.
The adaptive Cruise: are you able to select Degrees of sensitivity as to when your truck begins to SLOW, due to the car in front of you? I drive 6k-to-8,000 miles per month, driving 10 diff brands of New Cars; all have this variable distance (or variable sensitivity) settings I inquired about (usually 3 settings, at least). Thanks! Well-done video-very thorough and eloquent.
I never looked into changing the settings on the adaptive cruise, never had a big problem with it. Every now and then it would detect something that wasnt there and hit the brakes for a split second, apart from that it seemed to work nicely Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for all the info. Just got my license. Going to orientation on weds in Pennsylvania. Just curious. Do their tractors come with refrigerator, microwave and tv? Thank you. 👍
Awesome! The newer trucks come with fridges but once they break they dont replace them. You gotta bring your own small microwave and your own tv. The 2021 Cascadia I had came with a tv mount already installed. If you buy your own fridge keep in mind most of the mini fridges aren't meant to be tied down in an extremely bumping truck. My Home Depot bought fridge died on me after 3 weeks. Good luck!
Well done. You can make an audio book and I will listen to it. I am single and willing to drive anywhere, even in Alaska. Should be getting my CDL in a month or 2. Any suggestions where to go. I have an adventurous spirit and willing to try ice road or desert roads etc..
Great video.. Been there was thinkin of going back caught the c19 with my mentor.. Miss quite a while when I left I had 160 hours. Now they want me to go to do 200 more.. Naaa
You can refuse a load if your clock will not allow you to make the load on-time. My DM keeps track of my clock when scheduling. Weekend dispatch not so much.
I drove for Swift for 6 months 20 years ago and went to one of Swift's driving academys in Millington Tennessee ; we didn't have team leaders just dispatch . All the trucks are automatic ? If so , sweet . What's the Qualcomm like ? I also drove for Werner after Swift for 6 months and we did our logbook on the Qualcomm . Can your Qualcomm give you directions if you're lost ?
I guess the driver leaders help with communicating the drivers requests, concerns, and schedule to the dispatchers. Keeping them happy and satisfied with the loads and home-time. No more Qualcomm's , we all used Zonar ELD's and the ELD did have maps while I was with Swift, but I always threw on a 2nd gps on my phone, just in-case Zonar went down. Thanks for watching!
@@Mirage_ Are you tested on backing maneuvers right away during orientation or after training? I don't want to work for western who I heard might be the only one that tests backing.
Hey Tony, 2 questions 1) can you take your truck home on your home time? 2) Do you have to take home time in your home state? I’m looking at Fontana but interested in long haul 10-12 weeks out with a 5 day break in between. My grandkids are in NC and I have family in Nashville and Salt lake so I’d like to take my time off around the country, and quit paying rent! Lol
Yes you can request home-time in a different state. I'm from California & requested to be in Albuquerque NM for Christmas & New Years, they routed me there with a load & made it happen (communicated that request at least a month in advance with my driver leader). I'm not sure about bringing the truck home. They'll want you to park it in a 'safe' and non residential area. Good luck & thanks for watching!
I started OTR refrigerated. I never had to count on that $1000 a week because I always made more than that just running the loads they gave me. If you’re safe and run on time, they’ll keep you plenty busy.
What’s Swift starting CPM pay for new drivers coming in and do they require a contract if you go through their CDL training program? I’m fixing to get into trucking in April. Thanks
@@cwc8979 of you go through their school, you have to repay the school loan. You can leave earlier than 12 months, but you will owe them the difference. CPM varies by accounts. Just depends one what you want to do.
@@aarons.7271 I’m interested in doing reefer with Swift. Do you know the CPM for that division? Also, if you stay a year with Swift you don’t have to re pay them for the CDL training school right? Or is the contact longer?
@@cwc8979 I’m not sure what the entry rate is for Reefer, I’m a veteran, and I have all my endorsements and TWIC, so I earn a bit more than the normal CPM. Yes, one year you’re paid off, two years and the reimburse you what you paid them back.
As a rookie with no experience they kept me rolling the entire time but I'd have to drive all 70hrs to earn 1000-1200 a week, wasn't worth it so I stuck with the 5 day guaranteed 1k
4 to 5 weeks? Woow. I did it on 18 days. But that was to get the teaching period over as quick as possible. To go home. Then im out for 5 days a week, 11 hour days. So it's easy to get 3k plus miles a week. Gotta have a life too i agree.
I comment a week ago but I had a question, I’m a body builder and I went to keep body building. How do you suggest I do that while driving refrigerated otr.
Great question. I would bring a mat to throw on the ground for any ab exercises, bring dumbbells or kettlebells and maybe a jump rope. I brought dumbbells and would lift whenever I got the chance. When you're getting loaded & uploaded is probably the best time to get a workout in. Did plenty of pushups too. Also, not all Swift trucks come with refrigerators, I had to buy my own and install, thought to keep in mind if you plan on bringing your own food. Keep in mind whatever weight you bring will be on the truck whenever you're getting weighed. The lighter the better. Good luck!
I started there back in 99 to get my start experience .26 a mile lol which they got mega loads after a couple years I left then kept driving after 15 years experience came back for .38 lol most companies now pay .60 plus to show u how out of it they are tho I left again because it was taking way to long for dispatch bobtailed 2 days to nearest terminal turned in truck and my manager never knew anything for 2 days after that so 2 days bobtail not authorized and 2 more days and they didn't know so I would have sit 4 days minimum to get dispatch I guess lol
Good video, quick question they told me I am going to be out for 5 days a week, back home for 36 hour reset, lane- VA to MD, PA, NY (not NYC) and back to VA. How this work? Thanks
Looks like they'll have you stop in MD on day 1, MD to PA day 2, PA to NY day 3, then NY back to VA day 4-5. It looks do-able but there's always waiting around getting loading/unloaded, appointment times pushed to a later time, load not ready on time, trailers needing repairs, etc. So my advice would be to run it for a week or 2 and if that lane can't get you home on time being 5 days out, ask them to find you a different lane, or remove a stop from the current lane. Don't let them push you around, but also work with them, don't make any unrealistic demands. Good luck out there!
So if im otr and 7days aweek i only make after taxes 1000 .. And i have to be on that program n after 6months my pay goes down to 750. Nd your otr? Wtf that makes no SENSE .. Something i missed?
Money isn’t everything. But tbh driving seven days a week will always beat 90 days straight as an industrial electrician. Now don’t get me wrong I made good money too. I’d avg 80hrs a week. After taxes about 1600 plus per diem if 385 weekly. They paid for my hotels too. But the environment was horrible. Always working to death in factories, hot cold didn’t matter and everyone wanted to drink after work. Happy I left
I park the truck at a Swift Terminal when I leave for home-time. If there are no terminals near your home I believe they're flexible about where to park the truck, somewhere they deem safe
Hello Tony, I got my cdl at western truck school in santee in november 2021. I want to get on with swift intermodal how long is orientation? Where do they send you for it. I believe there is a swift yard in Otay Mesa here in San Diego. Thanks and really enjoy your videos, very informative. Wish you all the best in your trucking career.
Thats awesome! I was at United probably down the street from Western. Orientation with Swift was an entire day (paid). Call the terminal in Otay and make sure they have an opening for you, or else Swift will send you wherever they need you. Thanks for watching! good luck on your journey!
I hear they lock you in on a contract if you let them school you and I hear their school is expensive. So no, I do not recommend Swift to help you get a CDL. BUT you may not have a choice in your situation, view all your options and decide what's best. Good luck!
I just got my CDL pay out pocket, I call swift for any opportunity’s for local/new graduates they told me they had one intermodal account locally on my area but since I don’t have experience I needto do 200hrs or 6 weeks of of OTR training. Do you know if there contracts I have been looking at the forms but haven’t seen any that says contract ect..
Nice! I was told no contract, you can jump out the seat at any time (assuming you're not attached to a load & you're at a Swift terminal) but it never hurts to ask. The 200hrs of behind the wheel training was standard when I was with the company, I and every other new driver with zero driving experience had to do it. If you get paired up with a good mentor (you will be bunking with them for weeks on end in the same truck) you'll get A LOT of great, priceless training. 200 hours is a lot but the last thing you want when you're out there on your own is to be placed in a situation you have no experience in. Good luck to you & congratulations on obtaining your CDL!

I am worried about the money ( because I make a lot during the season), but like you I am wanting experience. When you said there are terminals with facilities for the drivers I felt more secure. I am a women and need my showers and laundry done.(Also a safe place to park most of the time)! Enough said, thanks for the video, I got some of my cold feet warm. Still nervous, but anyway thanks again!
Thank you for sharing your experience, I’m seriously looking in to getting my CDL and go OTR.
No problem, thanks for watching! Good luck on your journey!

In my opinion, I sense accurate info. with the preventive senerios like how many total hours and 5 day driving weeks and the importance of communicating that right away. Also liked what you said at the end about pay after 2 years at SWIFT etc. expressed by your opinion. Really good presentation and very informative!

I’m looking at a local dedicated route that’s $1,550 a week. They said they would send me to driving school and hire me for that.

Local aggregate work (what I do now) only use manual transmissions. Maybe look into that, hauling dirt and rock around your hometown. Good luck!

100% . Best to outweigh all your options
@JOSHWONDUDE what Amazon not paying well?
Can you park your car at the terminal while you are out OTR? Also, can you have Wi-Fi access in the truck?
5:20 so much on drivers shortage, we will raise your pay to 30 cpm( $750/2500mi); that's about $13/hr.
@@leepialong Right? More reason to grab the experience and get out asap

Ha awesome! Thanks for watching!
When you leave do you put in two weeks or just tell them ahead of time ??
I have my permit my question is how much money did you bring for your food and laundry for the training before mentor training
That’s what I want to know
I used to bring my own food out for the week, dry foods, fruits, hot pockets, burritos, frozen home cooked meals, so I wouldn't spend too much eating out at truck stops.
Yup. I ran the numbers and its not easy making $1000 in 5 days with Swift, I only signed on with them for that guaranteed $1k a week
Great video!!!
Every now and then it would detect something that wasnt there and hit the brakes for a split second, apart from that it seemed to work nicely
Thanks for the feedback!
Very informative, thank you buddy!

Good luck!

Thanks! Just got my CDL last week. How is your career going since making this video?
You can refuse a load if your clock will not allow you to make the load on-time. My DM keeps track of my clock when scheduling. Weekend dispatch not so much.
100% , my driver leader wanted me to roll on days I wanted off. Couldn't do it
I drove for Swift for 6 months 20 years ago and went to one of Swift's driving academys in Millington Tennessee ; we didn't have team leaders just dispatch .

Did Swift merge with Knight? Can you use Knight terminals?
You can use Knight terminals, but only for sleeping.
Good luck & thanks for watching!
ruclips.net/video/wcWpsp2AST0/видео.html
Gotta have a life too i agree.
do you have to change tires yourself or do they send someone out to you?
Thank You so much. Great and informative video. 🙏🏼
Loved the video!
That sounds like a pretty good deal for a new driver!!
It wasn't a bad place to start, but definitely not where I'd want to stick around
I started with Swift 27 years ago. The Columbus Ohio terminal. They were decent to me.
With swift can you have a tv and stuff like that in your cab
Yes!
Wages for company drivers came a loooooong way, .26cpm! Whooa

How does the CDL process work?
Does OTR Stay on the West Coast Side Or East Coast as well?
Really good video

During your training do you the trainer sleep in the truck? Do the trucks have double bunks?
Yes we both sleep in the truck, bunk bed system inside
Where do park the truck after your done or do you take the truck with you after work?
I park the truck at a Swift Terminal when I leave for home-time. If there are no terminals near your home I believe they're flexible about where to park the truck, somewhere they deem safe

Hello Tony, I got my cdl at western truck school in santee in november 2021. I want to get on with swift intermodal how long is orientation? Where do they send you for it. I believe there is a swift yard in Otay Mesa here in San Diego. Thanks and really enjoy your videos, very informative. Wish you all the best in your trucking career.

hey do you recommend Swift for school.
I hear they lock you in on a contract if you let them school you and I hear their school is expensive. So no, I do not recommend Swift to help you get a CDL. BUT you may not have a choice in your situation, view all your options and decide what's best. Good luck!
I have my orientation for Swift next week.
You're in for an adventure haha
Good informative video. Thanks!
