Jay Robinson was only 21 when he played the brutal Caligula the youngest actor in Hollywood to ascend to such a major role that truly was played to perfection

Actually he was 23 and yes it was a perfect role for him. Sorry to see him fall prey to the lure of the Hollywood high life and (by his own admission) his own ego. By the time he was 27 he was a full blown drug addict and had a reputation for being difficult to work with. After he served a year in jail he wouldn’t work in Hollywood again for almost 10 years. Cautionary tale of receiving so much fame and fortune at a young age.

As a child, I was moved by ''The Robe.'' I bought the film's soundtrack with the music by Alfred Newman (who was Jewish). Years later, I had a chance to take part in a radio interview with Jay Robinson, who played Caligula. He got a kick out of my comment that he scared me as a child. As an adult, I look at ''The Robe'' quite differently. It is an ''okay'' film, but cinematically 'fantastic?' No. Some of the acting, particularly Jean Simmons, VIctor Mature and Jeff Morrow (as the bitter, cynical Centurion Paulus) are very good. However, Richard Burton was miscast as Marcellus. Indeed, in a Time Magazine interview in the 1960s, Burton referred to the films as ''the bane of my life.'' He was like a child memorizing poetry as mandatory. That's not believability in real acting. "The Robe'' pales in comparison to films like both the silent and sound MGM ''Ben-Hur,'' ''King of Kings'' (1961) and Anothony Quinn in ''Barabbas.''

Simmons was married to Stewart grainger at the time
    However it didn't prevent
    Burton having a fling!

The rumors were never confirmed, however, men, like Burton, Howard Hughes, and others would flirt with her constantly. Granger was a very jealous man and eventually the marriage fell apart. It is said that Granger showed up on set with a gun to threaten Burton. He threatened producers and anyone who looked at Simmons in flirtatious way. Sad when you don’t have God in your heart.
