- Jay Robinson, who starred as Caligula in both "The Robe" and "Demetrius and the Gladiators," returns for a second half-hour show with cable TV host Skip E Lowe, taped in 1991. He discusses the marijuana arrest that nearly destroyed his career and his working relationships with such stars as Susan Hayward and Bette Davis.
GREAT actor, truly under-rated. His performance in The Robe is legendary.
I totally agree !!
Fantastic actor.great role
They couldn't have found a better actor in this world to portray caligula, he was excellent.
How right you are !!
I remember watching him in "The Robe" as a child and he terrified me.....he was a lovely and wise man....great actor
I could not agree more !!
me too.
I am amazed of his performance in the Robe, incredible he wasn't' even nominated for any awards
His voice as Caligula was incredible. Terrific actor.
His acting was absolutely mind blowing!!!
The scene where Marcellus Gallio was on trial before Caligula is my favorite. He really put on his apex performance there!
I met Jay and and Pauline in 1985 on Santa Monica beach. My friend and I were 25 years old and we'd just moved there from phoenix in a rock band! He brought 25 plus people from the valley to see us at Madame Wongs at 11pm on a monday night in Santa Monica! What a Guy!!!!!!! GREAT SOUL!!!!!
Jay Robinson was a truly gifted actor but it's his wisdom, when he speaks about life, Hollywood and surviving adversities that we really get to see the true essence of this great man. His dark years have made him humble, wise and compassionate. I love the story of his kindness to the writer of shampoo. A powerful lesson of the importance of kindness. That is the true Jay Robinson. May God rest his soul.
Frank Thring, Jay Robinson, they don't make villains like them anymore, the go- to guys for sociopathic rulers. ☺
Thring as Pontius Pilate and Jay Robinson as Caligula
A gracious man. Also a very vivid memory from my childhood in his roles as Caligula. His performances there are iconic of that time and genre.
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !!
Jay Robinson, great actor. To me he was the definitive Caligula. He was so menacing & intimidating with his smirk. Such a sinister portrayal and then you meet this wonderful person who is so forgiving. What an inspiring story.
I love this interview, for the revelation of the wonderful person Jay really was.
I have a notion to second that emotion !!
This guy was great as Caligula.
Yeah, but the real Caligula
makes this guy look like a
boy scout, lol
Yes his Caligula scared the crap out of me in both of his films as a child, but I also remember him as Dr. Shrinker on Saturday mornings TV. He must have been a lovely, smart, interesting and a hoot of a person to know on a personal level. He was able to laugh and not be bitter about the ups and downs of his life 😇💜 Late to the convo, but thanks for posting.
This man was the quintessential crazy ruler...unhinged, quirky, impulsive and menacing. What an actor...most memorable.
Indeed !!
But totally not like that in real life
@@kneeman66 Who can say. It's said that the Emperor Nero played his fiddle while Rome burned. For sure, he wasn't wrapped to tight.
Great performance in The Robe.
That's for sure !!
Very interesting interview with this actor. The interviewer's constant interruptions and jumping around is insufferable.
I totally agree ! It's wonderful to see one of my fave actors interviewed, but Skip's interviewing style is so frustrating ! Grrrr ! As Peter Griffin would say, it really "grinds me gears" !! :-(
OMG, I totally agree, as well. The interviewer should have let Jay talk, since the responses were interesting. The interviewer should watch and learn from Dick Cavett.
So happy this interview was in two parts ! I could have listened to Mr Robinson all night long ! I wish Skip would have let him go on in regards to Jay's spiritual life. I would have liked to have found out if Mr Robinson still considered himself a Christian (the story of his becoming a Christian is told in detail in his 1979 autobiography "The Comeback"). It was Jay's "Born Again" co-star Dean Jones who led him to Christ. In any cast, THANK YOU again for posting this wonderful interview ! CHEERS !! :-)
Not bitter at all and seems like a great guy. Too bad I didn't know more about him when he was alive
Jay was a genius actor! Great work!
I feel the same way ! A truly gifted character actor ! And this interview shows he was also an incredibly intelligent, articulate, thoughtful, perceptive & kind soul ! Bless his heart.... :-)
Such wonderful insight. He was truly *GREAT* !!!!
Yes !!
Jay was a perfect Caligula. They said the role went to his head, and he became difficult to work with. One of my all time favorite movies is, "Demetrius And The Gladiators." The scene where, Glycon slaps the cowboy shit out of Dardaneus is to me the greatest slap in movies. The late William Marshall, who also played the Black vampire "Blackula, was also perfect to play the role of Glycon. But with out Jay's role as Caligula the movie would have been flat.....
"kill him! He's NO GOOD!...your God will thank you for it!" LOL!!
The Robe was the SECOND biggest moneymaker after Gone With the Wind for quite some time. Jay's over the top frenetic mad emperor was the stormy heart of the film which all else played against. A less exaggerated Caligula would have been a serious weakness.
I think he played some kind of ambassador in one old Star Trek episode "Elaine of Troyas" I think. The year was around 1966 or 1967.
Season 3 TOS
Was this interviewer the inspiration for Jiminy Glick?
In an interview with Martin Short many years ago he used Skip E. Lowe's persona for Jiminy Glick.
Jay Robinson was on Star Trek TOS as the green alien, Ambassador Petri of Troyius.
Who is the old lesbian interviewing him?
Yes! I laughed out loud at your comment. The interviewer had a horrible style, kept interrupting and added nothing to Jay's comments. He should have asked a simple question and let Jay talk. We wanted to hear Jay's comments, not Skip's.,
I am of the generation which knows him as Dr.
Shrinker. I love performers whether they be actors or musicians or dancers or whatever who openly express awe with regard to their fellow performers.
Jay Robinson, what an interesting actor and character. Skip Lowe was a great interviewer who knew how to connect so well with his actor guests.
Jay Robinson even excelled his performance of Robe in Demetrius and the Gladiators. His best parts were his intelligent mind shown behind his madness. For instance when he says to Susan Hayward that he knew why she wanted him to be thrown before the tigers and not fight Macro--an ex champion gladiator, (as being a Christian he would not fight Macro and surely die) was because she wanted to give him a chance to live as in a combat with tigers with a dagger he had a slight chance. His dialogue:
" When the tigers have finished with him you wouldn't want whats left of him, " were spoken with great finness.

When a characters maniacal treachery drips off the screen, and the audiences hatred for the character keeps them on the edge of their seat, that's the finest talent.
I checked out his biography. I always thought that he was gay. But according to wikipedia, he was married twice.
He sure was right about how remembering a bad past, ""makes a person bitter".
The 3 actors i remember most from the Robe were Richard Burton,Victor Mature, and, of course, JAY ROBINSON as Caligula.
We Love You Mr. Robinson !!!!🌹🌹
Great interview! Robinson's portrayal of Caligula set the bar for all others that came after! I'd never heard of Skip Lowe before this clip. What are some of his other interviews?
I've posted many, all with veteran stars in rare interviews, from Lowe's personal archive. Search his name or mine and they should come up.
@@aeichlerThanks.
Who knew Jay Robinson was from Flatbush? I thought he was British.
no-new York city!
I loved The Robe even though I'm an atheist! I loved the scene where be Caligula says I want no excuses from you Praetorian and smacks him! One of the greatest scenes before Jane Hudson kicks Blanch in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.
He was punished unnecessarily, but it was really the audience that was punished.
Skip always puts on his own performance. I find him entertaining!
Can't believe he was only 19 when he did the robe
He was 22 when made and 23 when it was release.
the best Roman Emperor EVER!-so "
over the top"!!!
I actually thought he was British!!
Gee, I thought he was an English- born actor. Great Caligula, very evil!
