- In this blacksmithing and woodworking video, I build a better version of the pirate chest that I made 9 years ago, but I made this one with more knowledge and more skill!
This treasure chest was made for Derick's Daughter, Samantha's wedding as an envelope box! Stay tuned to the end to see Derick's reaction.
Here's the original video 9 years ago!

Knowing the channel, I was 100% that it will be a bandsaw box, and THE MAN cuts it with a hand saw and hollows it with a chisel...
I was thinking the same dam thing. He is a beast.
I thought the same thing. I should have known better...
I thought maybe he’ll just get it started with the handsaw…. Then he did the whole cut and I thought that’s gotta be tiring, then the look on his face after he finished…. Priceless😂
My thoughts too, was astonished Jimmy took the handsaw.
I’ve attempted to make a cut like that I gave up shortly after starting.
As you were sawing it in half, I was thinking, "Bloody hell, that looks exhausting" and then your face said the same thing 😂
So, the bandsaw Keith restored, is not yet.
@@tomahoks Getting closer, but that one is for sure big enough to cut a log.
Beautiful job Jimmy……what a talent you have.
The chest is a treasure itself. Lots of cool techniques on display here. And the fact that it was a gift makes it even better. Thanks for sharing!
Not a gift.. highly unlikely he did that for free.. In fact I'll bet it cost.. THOUSANDS of dollars to make that
@@joshjohnson132He made it as a gift for a friend's daughter's wedding. Sometimes people do nice things for other people.
@@joshjohnson132it was for free. It’s a gift for my daughter
And then you and Derick buried it for the new couple to go dig up right?😁
I don't know who you made that for, but it will be a life-long treasure.
You don’t have to be a jerk
@@Curtis-Randallthat comment might’ve sounded a bit snarky but it was a pretty nice explanation honestly
Very helpful. Can you tell me where I can left click the mouse on my iPhone please?
Considering where you got the log from it's truly a Deadman's Chest!! Looks good!
I am glad Derick will still claim you as a friend! Well done
I make chests...sometimes for actual treasure, silver and gold coins and bars. I love being there in the moment when they're received...THAT is what I treasure.
Filming the moment when the customer sees their project is what I am hoping to capitalize on.
I love that this was an opportunity for you to revisit a previous project on which you learnt how you would do things differently and was able to implement those changes. So many projects are a one-off and you don't always get to put to use the things you learn from it. Great work as always Jimmy, it looks awesome and it sounds like Derek agrees
Jimmy is the one friend people will like to have but everyone should be treated with the same respect thank you jimmy😂😂😂😂😂 the laughing emoji is my mark thanks jimmy
"You did it wrong." -Random Internet person. XD seriously though, beautiful object. Thanks for sharing its story.
LOVE these builds. And Derick's reaction at the end of seeing it, EPIC!
What a cool project and awesome gift. So much talent, so many tools. I have to say I was surprised you didn't use the bandsaw to make the cut between the bottom and top half of the log at the start.
Great job Jimmy! Glad to see you doing more blacksmithing! Some interesting techniques, really liked the plug welding of the handles on the side and the top of the welds looking like rivet heads. What I really found interesting was (at least in my opinion) you taking a sculptural approach to making it. Definitely a DiResta treasure chest!👏👏👏
Every pirate that has ever lived would be proud to own this
Man that thing is beautiful with lots of rustic charm
Truth be told, Jimmy was building a real life Mimic. The adventurers had no clue what was in store from Jimmy "The DM" DiResta....Now, roll for initiative
The very first video of yours I saw was the first chest back on the Make channel. I can't believe it's been nine years!
Brilliant work. When you picked the wood, did you intentionally select one with checking that suggests planks, or was that just a happy accident?
Tell me that being able to create isn't one of life's most wonderful blessings. What a wonderful gift for a friend!
I'm always learning from you Jimmy. What a Great Chest -Loved it! ❤👍
Thank you for sharing.
Also, I totally ❤ LOVED your Pool Table -I would be so apprehensive to tackle such an imposing Project.
TTFN,J
Outstanding build, and the reception ending with the envelopes was priceless, thank you for your efforts
He could have saved so much effort w/ a good forstner bit.... He really did it w/ a chisel and hammer. 😮
2:52 I think you could have saved a hell of a lot of time if you'd plunge-cut that with a circular saw.
A whole dang log! I did not look close enough at the thumbnail! 😂
Beautiful job Jimmy 👏 😊
That piece of firewood sat there for many years to be saved and re-purposed by you for a lasting treasure. What a fitting beginning to a new life. Another interesting and well documented project video!
Your friend looks like he could be David Picciuto's dad :D
This video reminded me how much I hate weddings…oh yeah, nice box😂
That's got to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I wish I had that type of vision to see ordinary objects in such an incredible way. Really fantastic work.
Dude, it is totally awesome! I honestly don't know how you come up with this stuff, but it is great ... keep it up!
Treasure within, treasure to watch, incorporating bits of the snooker table black smithing in the wrought iron work to make this epic chest of the ages. Thank you for sharing!
Even with modern tools that’s a hella lot of work.
Aww, I was hoping to see Jimmy in a suit at the wedding.
Ayee! That's a good treasure, it is! Yarr!
Neat! Derick's reaction was awesome. What a beautiful work of art!
I just received my DIRESTA Razor Blade, and what can I say??? I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! As always Jimmy......GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!
Wow! Beautifully done!
Always love watching you work, you’re a real treasure to the making community 😁
I can only imagine how long the first handsaw cut took!
When you weld steel on wood, I was wondering why the wood didn’t start to burn. They I saw you spraying a little water on it. I guess this is enough to keep the wood from burning? Or did I miss something? 🤷🏻♂️

What I want to know is, do you still get comments from the, "All you did was just press play" crowd?
Great use of tools and techniques from across a few centuries, to fulfill a vision using varied materials. Thumbs up, and thanks for posting content that shows what's possible when you expand your existing comfort zone and skill sets.
Thank you! i hardly get get negative comments anymore so maybe I am doing something wrong!! 😂😂🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@jimmydiresta Hah!
Talk about a Treasure Chest! That was an awesome build Jimmy! 👍👍👏👏🗃🗃
Absolutely fantastic Jimmy. This is very special to Derek, his wife and Samantha. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Those petal-shaped wood chips at 3:00 would be delicious, deep fried in sunflower oil to golden brown and topped with sea salt and cracked pepper, if I were vegan.
Where is that big bandsaw when you need it. Love the chest.
Muito trabalho, ficou muito bonito mesmo!
Parabéns!!!
That's completely insane. Soooo good.
Thank YEW
Bruh! That was friggin incredible! Great work! I truly enjoyed watching you create! Great Work! Thanks!
Wonderful, Jimmy. I'm sure Derek's daughter will "treasure" it forever.
That is an awesome chest and definitely worthy of the treasure it will hold! Great work Jimmy
Arr, ye be a crafty swashbuckler of wood and iron, for ye've fashioned a treasure chest fit for Neptune's own horde! With curves smoother than the sea's caress and a lock as sturdy as a ship's anchor, this be a chest that'd make ol' Blackbeard himself weep with envy. Aye, 'tis a true masterpiece that holds the promise of untold riches and adventures on the horizon. May ye guard it well and keep it safe from the clutches of landlubbers and scallywags alike!
Beautiful project as always.
I need to get a forge now... Just need to finish my dragknife that I started in the old-school blacksmithing course I took...
Whatever subject the video is about, i immediately give a like, even before watching 10sec of it, and i'm never disapointed
Always great quality content, always wonderful craftsmanship tricks and tips, always gorgeous resulting product .... i love it 👌👍
What a cool build. I really like the metal-working and blacksmithing you used. I winced a little when I saw you start to hollow that log out with that gouge--that was a Herculean effort. It was very cool to see the hand-tools in use though--awesome job!
I think one of the fascinating things about watching you work is, not only are you a highly skilled and experienced craftsman, but you are an artist as well. So watching you work, how you approach a project or challenge within a project is interesting because often I would not have thought of that solution or not even have approached the situation that way. Additionally, you are resourceful acquiring vast resources and tools dwarfing many other craftsmen's collections.
This includes so many different types of tools and skills. Not just woodworking nor metal working nor leather working, blacksmithing etc, etc.
I really look forward to your videos especially considering I am nearly a neighbor lol.
God bless you sir.
Frickin amazing chest. Thanks for making me feel completely inadequate about my skills. Lol😂.
The perfect gift box for your wife's Christmas gift, pearl necklace!
Or...
To keep your gold and silver dollar coin investment in.
In a safe guarded by a real skeleton!
2M. Yay. And an incredible chest. So much work.
Hey... i used that chainsaw!!! It gave me a hernia and saw envy. Awesome project love seeing the tig welding we need more jimmy tig videos!!!

Bust either way could be sittin on gold mine great Ideas for Winter Project,s Comin soon Here in The Big Canada Congrats Keep them Comin make us !! Proud Jimmy Thks For Sharin
I admit, i'm a wee bit curious (mostly because outside UK, and even there it's a bit complicate afaik) i don't know what exactly is the legality of having a cemetery on your property. Next time you do an update, can you tell us your perspective of the whole affair? I'm sure you've gotten some info as well.
That said, awesome chest, needs some doubloons. :)
Aw man! I thought you’re going to blacken up the metal with bluing agent before brushing on the marine spar finish! 🤨🤦🏻♂️
Which came first - the log or the idea? (edit NVM) @2:25 - hahaha no shit. Lol why Jimmy? Why do that to ourself when I'm sure you've got a bandsaw that will do it. As a Brit, is Derick a Bostonian?
This was in a playlist and I looked away for like 5 seconds and didn't realize the previous video, who's creator I've never seen, had finished and I was like damn he really looks like Jimmy LMAO
This kind of video I like the most.
A real Jimmy Diresta video making something from scrap a turning it in to a beautiful thing.
Just something he finds on a street and creating a art piece from scrap.
I found John and Jimmy on Discovery channel and following them after that.
Keep doing this 👊🏻
My arms are so tired from watching this video Jimmy. 😂
Ive been a huge fan since Dirty Money, love your channel, you literally inspired me to build stuff. Im not as good as you but one day lol
Went back & watched the 1st Pirates Chest build , the 2 are worlds apart , but both are very classy !!! & brick outhouses !!!
I’m always trying to guess the music when it’s playing at 3x speed in the background.
The anvil getting way too close for my comfort to the edge of the table at 8:55. I’m like « Stop hitting it bruh !! » Jeez. 😂
Awesome 💪 Reminds me of my childhood, where I loved to play pirate. Cheers
Yerp the Missus has requested a larger box to contain Jimmys Balls. Not an unresonable request, as dragging them around has become tiresome ;-)
16 men on a dead man's chest...Wow great build. Fantastic video thumbs up.
Still left with the question of how many bandsaws does a man need before he uses them to speed up insanely labour intensive processes😂, fantastic work Jimmy you really leveled up.
Absolutely riveting!!
Love the hook on that grinder. Another genius idea like the trash can lid. Lots of silent tips on this video
Awesome Chest wow. What an incredible wedding gift too. Wow. Amazing.
You the man Jimmy! Thank you so much for the awesome video!!
Derek’s reaction - yup - 300% that. Man - I need to get over the fear of the oxy torch.
Hey Jimmy, how much Titebond do you like to have on hand for your shop?
Jimmy: Yes (10:48)
“Okay, you’re still my friend.” The maker’s quote of the year! #derekfrommalden
I could do that too if I had a massive chainsaw #babyvoice 👶
What separates diresta from a lot of other makers:
Jimmy: 1 tool, does 70 different tasks.
Other makers: 70 tools, does the same the same job over.
When are you making another kids show? My daughter really liked the show with the ‘grumpy man’
Beautiful work, well done!
Just listened to you talking about this one on the podcast! VERY cool! I felt like only I knew the secret as I started watching, and knew what the intended use was!
3:54 ah finally a bandsaw, I thought something had happened to Jimmy. It looks great.
My dude, I know you're building this by hand, but take some time to consider the use of a table saw to get rid of most of the cavity ruclips.net/video/hyVygyfDV1A/видео.html
Could do all the woodworking parts of this but need to step up and learn more on the my ironwerk and welding. Thx for sharing JD
Finally proof that pirates used TIG as well as MIG welding!
Wow, super nice anvil!
Great blacksmithing.
I looked away for a second and when I looked back, I was like, "Eff me, Jimmy found a way to MIG weld oak."
Amazing, Jimmy! Beautiful chest!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
damn hand sawing the top off must have been a struggle. It looks so sick, there's something about a nice treasure chest that really appeals to me.
