Mike, be careful of removing grounds, they actually can carry current, as there is a lot of leakage in modern electronics. It can easily be enough to kill you. Also if there is any sort of neutral wire issues, all the house current could be using that ground lead. Its possible to have 120VAC on that line and create an arc. A good way to verify is to use a clamp on meter to just see if there is any current running though the pipe / wire. The safest way is of course to turn off the power to the house with the main breaker, which I know won't happen, but its the best way.
Even if you turn off the main you can have the neighbors current running backwards through the ground. If you can use jumper cables to divert the current to a different ground that is the best way.
@jimmydiamond75 Yep, over the decades I've been sure that I was a pioneer of some techniques only to find out that some of us are just wired to think alike. Respect!
I remember back in 1998-2000 I was Civil Engineering rep on Water Main & Valve replacement all over Bay Ridge Brooklyn...Everything from 20" Feeds/Valves to 8" Street piping...Vid took me back a few years!
In the Midwest, they are called buffalo boxes. The city put that shut-off valve right where the public sidewalk is located. Needless to say, there is a problem
Keeping the old ways alive because they still work when needed. #LoveBosch Make the trades great again. I changed thousands of meters for the MDC up in Hartford CT. Only had one watermain break in all that time. Smash the Like Button. Dove is Jonny on the spot with the assist.
Mickey_Pipes - I see a few people have commented about the water meter ground - The electric ground clamp shall be on the water pipe from the street - closest to the wall, before the meter, before any water valve. Additionally, there shall be a jumper wire to the other side of the house plumbing. The metal clamps used must match the type of pipe - Steel clamp for galvanized pipe; brass clamp for copper. These rules have been in effect for over 30 years, it's the national electric code. It has to ground both the electric service to the panel and also the metal plumbing in the house; it has to work whether there;s a water meter or not. Also, If a plumber takes out metal pipe in a house and replaces with plastic - electric grounding clamps and a jumper wire need to be installed.
In Rochester NY, we don’t have that liability in the right-of-way. Sidewalk and the tree lawn are all City maintained and liable - you just need to mow it.
I left New York State in 2005 for sunny Florida and lower taxes. Also my city just replaced a few of my sidewalk slabs not for cracking but because of discoloration. Plus no charge
Around here on the Cape we call those meter nipples - Meter spuds We are also not allowed here to touch the curb valve, but I have a curb wrench just in case I have to shut it off and don't want to wait for water company to show up
My mother lives on the Cape. In her town the curb stop and service lateral belongs to the homeowner. If there's a leak it's on you. We had to dig a 6ft deep hole in the yard to fix a leak where a rock had rubbed through the PE service lateral.
Each town on the cape have their own regs. Some towns the water company is responsible up to meter no matter where the meter is. Some water companies are responsible only to the curb stop. In another town if the 90 degree elbow and lead lined nipple before street side shut off needs replacing, plumber makes the changes after water company turns off the curb valve. @@theodorgiosan2570
The electrical bonding wire continues the electrical ground to the street side of the water piping system when the water meter is removed for servicing. The meter bonding wire can be attached to the water pipe at any convenient location adjacent to the house side of the meter.
How much reduction in flow would you get from going down to 1/2 for the meter ? Don’t most meters come in a pipe diameter that matches the incoming service line? I have 1” black thick wall poly to 3/4 meter to the house supply all in 3/4 for instance .
@PipeDoctor Well I don't hang expansion tanks upside down, but I don't always mark my press fittings. Just sharing what I heard, whether it be true or not. And I know reps don't know everything either.
Fun fact! My water meter is in my next-door neighbor's front yard. Their pine tree's roots crushed my water main 2 years ago and flooded THEIR yard. HAHAHAHA! Welcome to Georgia.
At 16:20 a 2 or 3 pound "dead blow hammer" might have worked better than a pipe wrench. When de-soldering, you weren't heating both sides of the pipe equally. And: what about the "flooding" at 5:07? Seems like the city water company would need to dig up & replace the curbside shutoff, no?
Any one want to know what happens when the curb stop fails, My mom had that happen at her house and they had to come and dig it up and unhook it so it could weep into the hole they dug while we went into the house to sweat on a new 1.25 inch ball valve inside the house to replace the old gate valve that was leaking through. We couldn't sweat the valve inside because the curb stop was weeping water through. Sad thing is they didn't replace it, they just hooked it back up after we got the valve installed inside and turned it back on.
I’m surprised you didn’t just cut back on the copper and sweat or press new with a male adapter back into the galvy. The longer that tee was taking the fatter your pockets tho 😉
Where I’m at the city will lose their shit if you turn the water off without them being there. But then if it leaks or doesn’t shut off all the way it’s the home owners problem 😂
Hey aprentice anticipation of what's needed on the job will go a long way. You should've had them tools ready before Mikey had to grab them himself. JS
I feel for you guys up there. Here in NC we still bury pipe about 2 ft down but most meters and curb stops are less than a foot deep in a meter box. I’ve replaced many main water lines with a few guys and shovels when I first started out
When your explaining about the sidewalks and such the property owner owns the land. There is right of way for travel as well as utilities. The county doesn't own it. Any road has a right of way for travel.
That may be true in your state (I doubt it), but not in New York. Rights-of-way are legally defined continuous parcels of land that are government owned and designated as a right-of-way for travel (as opposed to government land that is not open to travel - buildings, parks, random other pieces). In NY the Right-of-way can be state, county, or town/city - this is the maintenance jurisdiction.
@@PipeDoctor All good, I know most major quality manufacturers did the white handles for lead free (Milwaukee, Nibco, Apollo). Some did not like Viega, they do red or green. Just wondering who's valve is that? I am sure you would not have an issue telling us viewers what lead free valve you are advising to be used. I do wish It would be standardized on all manufacturers.
This is exactly why i despise copper. Sweating is such a pita for removing later. Any chance i get i cut off as much copper as i can, screw around with sweating on a propex fitting for an hour and the rest takes about 5 minutes.

If you watch the video with volume he literally says to watch out for current through the ground
Even if you turn off the main you can have the neighbors current running backwards through the ground. If you can use jumper cables to divert the current to a different ground that is the best way.
You can use jumper cables to maintain your ground until you complete the repair and reconnect the ground conductor.
Hummm
I’ve done the same! I thought it was original 😂
@jimmydiamond75

And in this episode Mikey F'n Pipes shows us how to convert a potable water line into a steam boiler .
Ha
Great Job Updating the Piping around the Shutoff.👍🙏
3:55 Can you put an Amazon link in the description for that special wrench you use to open the curb stop cover…😂😂
lol. Rube Goldberg socket
Thx. That galvanized appears to have made a nice heat sink. You are patient.
Sure was
Wasn't that hard to remove before hand. Sad to watch.
In the Midwest, they are called buffalo boxes. The city put that shut-off valve right where the public sidewalk is located. Needless to say, there is a problem
Buffalo is a brand name, that one is not a Buffalo.
Nice job on the fence post for turning the water off on the street.
As I was watching Mikey "smoke his flashlight" I thought the same thing about a rechargeable LED headlight..
lol
Either use the number 8 tip or cut off the adapter flush with the galvanized 90- would have unsweated much faster.
I just paid for the repairs of the city sidewalk.. it's not cheap in Albuquerque NM.

From what i understand viega would pay for flood damages if you mark the pipe as well. I think thats the real reason people do that

Mine at curb blew out few years ago. New 1 front left side in middle of lawn.
Thank God for water line insurance.

Interesting
Same thing in most of CT, property owner is just responsible for snow/ice removal off the sidewalk.
I left New York State in 2005 for sunny Florida and lower taxes. Also my city just replaced a few of my sidewalk slabs not for cracking but because of discoloration. Plus no charge
That's great to hear! Florida sounds like a wonderful place to live with the sunny weather and lower taxes.
I think Mikey needs to ask Santa for a wearable LED head LIGHT❗️😂
lol 😆
I was thinking the same thing.
Or ask Cornell or snap on
Need to take a grinder and put a notch in the curb to mark the stop when that paint fades
Around here on the Cape we call those meter nipples - Meter spuds We are also not allowed here to touch the curb valve, but I have a curb wrench just in case I have to shut it off and don't want to wait for water company to show up

Sooooo, which neighbor is missing a fence post? Lol!!!
Nice Mike, but you know un-sweating a wet pipe is like pissing in the wind, this is why you have Pro-press.
I know
In san jose ca they change curb stop on the fly and really fast. blink you missed it
I was taking bets on if you were going to run out of gas while removing the copper fittings.
You would of lost
Surprised you don"t use flux while burning the fitting off.
We did the same thing with a piece of old black pipe. 😂. I'll post in the group chat lol
Mike
You missed your opportunity! You should have said you need a longer ROD ! Not more depth! 😂
Great job Mikey!
Thank you
No pro press Steve would love it.
She's a leaker mama
shit! that"s a good one. in boston cant even attempt it. water division has to do it. froze many lines cause they take for ever to show up.
Did you just tread copper into/brass,hole long before dis similar metals start leaking?
Nope
Its crazy how the city ir countey owns the side walk but the property owner is responsible for any and all repairs.
Hey Mike,
Get yourself a battery operated metal detector,it will make finding those caps a lot easier, you crazy bastard😂😂
Epic tip. Love you! No homo
Johnny Sunshine!
Do you ever take a wet vac and suck the water out so you can solder easier?
I was lazy
The Viega rep I talked to said not marking the depth does not void any warranty.
Just like hanging an expansion tank upside down is cool too. I go by what’s in black and white. Not spoken
@PipeDoctor Well I don't hang expansion tanks upside down, but I don't always mark my press fittings. Just sharing what I heard, whether it be true or not. And I know reps don't know everything either.

the cheapo metal detector from harbor freight works great for this type of stuff

Nice repair, Mike get a fucking headlamp already
I only purchase and use L copper myself. I see no reason to save money to buy M copper except in using it for water heater pressure relief valves.
We use M for hydronic heating
I can hear the comments now!!! Mikey pipes I've been soldering for 30 years and never had a leak in my life. Lol great job mikey
lol

Finishing off that roll of tape felt good, didn't it. A lot of good work happens with a roll of tape.
In Chicago we call them buffalo vavles I don’t know why don’t look like a buffalo has haa sadurday for a little burbon looking at work while relaxing
mikey get a headband lamp save your jaw i know the whole big black thing in your mouth but come on nice to see you breaking out the torch respect
I know
Wonder Boy
I’m surprised you didn’t just cut back on the copper and sweat or press new with a male adapter back into the galvy. The longer that tee was taking the fatter your pockets tho 😉
Is that soft solder or silver solder
Silver soft solder.
Where I’m at the city will lose their shit if you turn the water off without them being there. But then if it leaks or doesn’t shut off all the way it’s the home owners problem 😂
You could of just cut out that section and redone it new.
Next time unthread the galviniezed pipe and then the 90 and if you got water thread a brass 90 on dont risk disturbing that tee
Hey aprentice anticipation of what's needed on the job will go a long way. You should've had them tools ready before Mikey had to grab them himself. JS
why is Mikey Pipes doing the work instead of the apprentice getting hands on? I know time is of the essence for repairs.
Funny…..he wasn’t an apprentice.
Who knew Mikey could multitasks. Torch in one hand, channellocks in the other hand and a Trump covid light in the mouth. lol
very beautiful plumbing done
If you're not careful with that house ground wire, you might have a shocking experience.
I got a 6’ street key

Come on Mikey you know you should’ve taken the galvanized off first - it’s acting like a big heat sink
Is that a lead free valve?
YES
