Kudos to this new client that wants to learn about his system, and is learning a lot from Mikey Pipes videos 👍👍🏆🏆
:)
Kudos to the homeowner for learning about his system and how to operate and maintain it. Kudos to Mikey for the tutorial on how the system is not correctly installed and what that means to the homeowner. Hacks bring you stacks, and good work well explained brings you loyal customers.
Mikey the thing I love most about your channel is you take time to explain WHY on everything! to the best of your ability so those watching can understand. I feel that Hvac trade schools should play your videos because of the real world problems you encounter and the way you explain what's wrong and how to fix it........ in detail.
thank you. i value the feedback.
Wasn't expecting my comment that I left a few weeks ago about the magnetic filter coming up in a video and a customer asking about doing that to their system
It’s actually a good idea.
Lol kind of funny how simple things get attention I remember I made the joke of calling mikeys shortest time employee nicknamed him shake n bake 😅 and that took off 😮
Doc Mikey definitely reads the comments. The more subs the more impressive that gets.
even the replies to replies:)@@jayclark5912
Many manufacturers recommend using them we use boiler mag. Can be installed in horizontal, vertical, or angle because the filter can be set as needed
Heart of a teacher.
thank you!
Mikey just shows how you are educating the masses! Great video!
I appreciate that!
Mike, I've been spraying wd40 on my Isuzu Cabover NPR truck motor, 4.8 since 2003. They are built with lots of aluminum parts. This motor still looks new with no oxidation. WD is like magic, and it protects everything under the cab. Nice to see you're using it in the same manner. Another real good educational video.
Thanks for sharing
Many Don’t know there is a BIG Difference in Every Field and HVAC is NO Different. I Won’t Trust just Anybody with my Families Life. Quality is Worth Paying for. 👍🙏
Your motto hacks bring me stacks comes to life with this boiler.
excellent video... Love this!! Lots to learn in here and see first hand how bad a system can act when its not piped correctl;y.. theres a lot of videos Talking about banging and water hammer and such when the piping is incorrect.. here it is right on video.. you can hear the pipes clamouring you can see the turbulence in the sight g;lass first hamd.. Love this!!
The size of the vent tapping is unimportant. The size of the orifice on the vent is important. That is probably a straight Gorton D. It flows 0.330 CFM at 1 ounce of pressure as per the chart in Lost Art. A Gorton 1, which has a 3/4 inch tapping, also flows the exact same 0.330 CFM. Alternatively, the straight pattern Heat Timer Varivalve flows over 0.600 CFM, nearly double either of the Gortons, and has a 1/8 tapping. A 1/8 tapping is capable of flowing 1.200 CFM. A Barnes and Jones Big Mouth flows over 2 CFM and has a 1/2 or 3/4 tapping. So even the tiny Varivalve is a better bang for your buck than the #1. But a 1/8 tapping will flow more than 99% of the vents out there. The tapping is not the restriction, the top orifice is. Take a look at the vent CFM charts in Lost Art. Both the Radiator vents and Main Vents chart. Compare the Gorton D and 1. Both 0.330 CFM despite different tapping sizes.
That's really useful info. I was aware of the differences in orifice size; in practice, people paint them and reduce that orifice sometimes dangerously. I'd love a good quick reference for a lot of this stuff; all the boiler guys bailed when stuff got crazy in 2020 and the brain drain has been nuts. It's worrisome as I know the boilers need more maintenance than they get and I am spread very thin at work.
Mike pipes = Mikey the hack 😂
How many of ya’ll know that the Hartford Loop is named after the insurance company The Hartford that is still around today
I love informed customers. Some people seem to prefer clueless ones, but I find the more the customer knows, the easier my job is. As long as you're not full of shit, a smart customer is your friend.
Bingo
Tap out the burner tubes After you brush them that way you dump out any of the debris that you brush and knock loose into the burner tube.
Might not really matter, that’s just how I do it to get all the crap out of tubes that gets brushed loose
Love the random fuzzywuzzy lol
Sorry
Just in time for dinner

@@PipeDoctor just finished. Sounds like it could be a hefty repair for that poor guy due to hacks. If he wants to pursue it being done correctly for long time could be well worth it. Hopfully he gives you guys the job for a video, would love to see the fix.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought Pipe Doctor is not so proudly expanding to Bedford Mass. :)
lol
I am at 9:09 in, and you have not even MENTIONED the OIL BURNER switchplate! Mikey.... Aware of surroundings? Forget the wrong Hartford Loop, get a sticker on that switchplate! lol
Amazing how you disconnected the pressure control and the low water cut off went off at the same time play the lotto😊 that some coincidence
How Mike you should hire that guy as a technician.
:)
Wow. you cannot make this stuff up. Mikey you do great service, and keep it real. No Bull S***. Another great video. Thanks 👍✌
Those 2 pipes leading underground are ticking time bombs.
very likely leaking all the condensate return into the ground and refilling constantly.
Mike you know your stuff. That looks like a mess
Thanks.
The WD40 may seem like a good idea but it does not add any protection to the metal pipe. The protection it does give is gone as soon as it evaporates.
@MMattesIt depends on the application. If some of it is trapped within the joint, it may last longer. WD stands for "Water Disspersent" It was not made to be a lubricant. It only lubricates because it has an oil base.
Your brakes don’t work to well at stop signs , huh , sorry , liked your show , but where I live they write tickets for non stopping , and I’m jealous yaw got snow , keep up the awesome job .
Good thing I don’t drive where you live
Wonderful stuff Mikey Pipes...if anything now I know WD-40 is good for bird poop on a car 😁Always enjoy watching and learning, see you on the next one!
Just curious about the high stack temperature. Does it mean that the heat transfer of the combustion gases to the boiler is inhibited by carbon buildup and needs cleaning? How would you clean it, do you have to remove the jacket from the boiler or can you clean it with a bottle brush from underneath? Nice video thanks!
Mikey pipez doesn’t do push ups, he pushes the earth down.
@MikeyPipesOrlando is looking forward to a personal factory tour with his iphone in hand! Will make great content to share with the entire WORLD!! #WeInstallLochinvar
Issue with magnetic filtration is that creates larger pressure drop, which may require additional A dimension height, to overcome the pressure drop(see Dan Holohans Lost Art of Steam Heating).
I wish they made a cordless vacuum that actually had enough suction to hurt my hand, like my corded Henry work vacuum. Cords can be inconvenient, but Ive yet to see a cordless that can unclog a central vac system.
👌
Hey Mikey, Great video! Now that is one smart customer, he wanted Mikey the man and only the man to come help him out and Mikey the man obliged! How many companies would honor a request as such and make the customer happy? Also, i was thinking, perhaps when you disconnected the pressure trol wire and the low water light come on, it could only be that the 24 volts was interrupted at the low water unit and was just going through it's cycle when you reconnected it. The customer did drain water while you were there and even though it looked as though there was enough water to satisfy the low water unit, perhaps the low water cut off probe is a little dirty.
Nothing stops the pipe Dr. not even a 🛑
sure dont
The steam pipes are clearly pre-existing to the boiler, and has likely been fine for the 80 years the house has been there. I’d bet anything the newer boiler was installed by the previous homeowner.
Sorry. You are wrong. Modifications made by idiots who have no right touching it.
That return is loaded with water

After filling boiler with new water, run boiler for at least 20 minutes, to boil out the oxygen.
"If you're not testing, you're guessing." You can tell a Mikey Pipes client...and you can tell him much.
You should start a pipe doctor university
Very interesting video thank you. Why not use the Gifford loop instead of the Hartford loop? The Bottom of the Gifford loop should be equal to the top of the water line. Returning the condensate from the Gifford loop will be quieter than the Hartford loop.
I would install a proper reducer inn the flue and check the temp again. you may have air from the room going up the chimney instead of from the boiler
Mikey you roll through 2 stop signs in your intro not good be careful 😂😂😂😂
Great video....now bring out the Latinas Chicas 🎉
Let the boiler to cool and then flush it to prevent degradation of the heater exchanger
13:37 does anybody use some kind of deaerator for boiler feed water? I don't know how it would work for residential heat, but I know they're common with industrial boilers
I thought you were going to work on one of those fire tube boilers.
The way the boiler is piped is very inefficient the vent needs to be connected correctly he needs to have you correct the piping and venting then retest the efficiency! This customer was very wise to call you!
that is one of the homes you'd normally see have an boiler explosion, fire and deaths! it needs turned off, disabled and whomever installed, sold, rented, leased the place needs a big lawsuit.
Diy install on that boiler
Should the boiler have a safety valve instead of a relief valve. I have learned that safety valves are for steam. And relief is for water units, the safety will prevent a boiler from blowing up.
Haaaaah, I saw that reducer in the pressure blow drain line, I first thought the copper 90 was jammed onto a blk nipple. Slap dat hack Mikey !!
f'en hacks
Another fine video by Mikey Pipes. Keep up the good work and Smash the like and Subscribe please folks. Welcome to the new guy.
Once again - nice descriptions for what and why you were doing things. As for the Hartford loop being missing - I thought it was required by law to be there. At a minimum, it is required for the warranty of the boiler (and probably for home insurance on the boiler).
I understand your wariness of the old black pipe from the ground, but I believe you could mega press a fitting - especially if you are below the water line. I'd push the homeowner to change the piping - from both a safety and a warranty perspective.
As for the previous installer, it looks like they were used to water boilers and not steam and just cludged he rest.
The current boiler has the protection of the Hartford Loop. Just the excess height can contribute to water backing up in the main
There is a Hartford loop. Just it's way to high
🥇
Gd Morning . Once you referred to an author who wrote couple of books on steam heating systems . would you again ?
Dan Holohan

Mike if your going to work on this mess cut that return high just below elbow then put hose in to pump out the return.

@@PipeDoctor The Blurs?
You’re good at what you do, no questions asked! But good lord my guy stop acting like you’re the only guy who does plumbing or HVAC. Your channel has lost a lot of followers cause the way you act. I’m a follower but you never show up on my subs.
There are Master Plumbers cutting corners or just forgetting the proper way . Seems Mickey stating the correct way to Plumb is his way of making the trades great again .

Iron or steel are magnetic... rust is not. So how would a magnetic filter help?
@@paulmillneryou do realize rust is just small to micro-particles of common ferrous magnetic metals right? 😶
