WD is like magic, and it protects everything under the cab. Nice to see you're using it in the same manner. Another real good educational video.

The size of the vent tapping is unimportant. The size of the orifice on the vent is important. That is probably a straight Gorton D. It flows 0.330 CFM at 1 ounce of pressure as per the chart in Lost Art. A Gorton 1, which has a 3/4 inch tapping, also flows the exact same 0.330 CFM. Alternatively, the straight pattern Heat Timer Varivalve flows over 0.600 CFM, nearly double either of the Gortons, and has a 1/8 tapping. A 1/8 tapping is capable of flowing 1.200 CFM. A Barnes and Jones Big Mouth flows over 2 CFM and has a 1/2 or 3/4 tapping. So even the tiny Varivalve is a better bang for your buck than the #1. But a 1/8 tapping will flow more than 99% of the vents out there. The tapping is not the restriction, the top orifice is. Take a look at the vent CFM charts in Lost Art. Both the Radiator vents and Main Vents chart. Compare the Gorton D and 1. Both 0.330 CFM despite different tapping sizes.

That's really useful info. I was aware of the differences in orifice size; in practice, people paint them and reduce that orifice sometimes dangerously. I'd love a good quick reference for a lot of this stuff; all the boiler guys bailed when stuff got crazy in 2020 and the brain drain has been nuts. It's worrisome as I know the boilers need more maintenance than they get and I am spread very thin at work.

@MMattesIt depends on the application. If some of it is trapped within the joint, it may last longer. WD stands for "Water Disspersent" It was not made to be a lubricant. It only lubricates because it has an oil base.

Just curious about the high stack temperature. Does it mean that the heat transfer of the combustion gases to the boiler is inhibited by carbon buildup and needs cleaning? How would you clean it, do you have to remove the jacket from the boiler or can you clean it with a bottle brush from underneath? Nice video thanks!

Hey Mikey, Great video! Now that is one smart customer, he wanted Mikey the man and only the man to come help him out and Mikey the man obliged! How many companies would honor a request as such and make the customer happy? Also, i was thinking, perhaps when you disconnected the pressure trol wire and the low water light come on, it could only be that the 24 volts was interrupted at the low water unit and was just going through it's cycle when you reconnected it. The customer did drain water while you were there and even though it looked as though there was enough water to satisfy the low water unit, perhaps the low water cut off probe is a little dirty.

Once again - nice descriptions for what and why you were doing things. As for the Hartford loop being missing - I thought it was required by law to be there. At a minimum, it is required for the warranty of the boiler (and probably for home insurance on the boiler).
I understand your wariness of the old black pipe from the ground, but I believe you could mega press a fitting - especially if you are below the water line. I'd push the homeowner to change the piping - from both a safety and a warranty perspective.
As for the previous installer, it looks like they were used to water boilers and not steam and just cludged he rest.
