I remember watching Georgie Best as a teenager. Every time he got the ball the crowd gasped - you knew something exciting could happen. Marcus Smith has that effect.♥️
678 sure (though Dombrandt is his 8) but 9 all day long is our biggest problem none of our choices have anything on Danny let alone the other top 6 teams first or second choice 9’s. just too slow physically and mentally.
@@Nondescriptperson I harshly include Dombrant but defence is not enough. Need to match stats of wining teams opposite numbers and line breaks and carries I’m certain are higher giving much better platform for attacking play Smith is far more suited to.
Something I noticed, and I could be wrong but........why as Borthwick do you select Smith at 10, who excels at heads up flat line rugby, with JVP who is a very structured 9, then take both off and replace with Mitchell @9 a fast playing head up SH, with a slower more structured 10 in Farrell? Would you not pair JVP with Faz and Mitchell (see Danny Care) and pair him with Smith? It just seems to me like, and as much as I like Steve he doesn't seem to know which style he wants to play - especially in the backs? Anyone agree or am I mad? Also selecting Ben Curry ahead of Earl
Englands problem is Smith is the only X factor player you've got.. So if left out England has a slow pedestrian attack. With Smith in England has a slightly less slow pedestrain attack - take your pick. And the overall team defence has been poor since Borthwick took over too. Btw.... England finishing 4th in 6 Nations is obviously all Eddie's fault :)
Not true. Got many X factor players but they don't get a chance. And btw we finished a place higher than that clown Jones achieved so yes that definitely wasn't his fault.
Well said Danny - I have been saying they need to build the backs around the future who is Marcus. We need to do that now - forget about this world cup and focus on 2027.
The view in in the Leinster fans club about smith is really positive. Many think he'd be a better 13 if he were to throw on another 10/15 kilos. I personally think hes one of he most skilful rugby players in the world. I don't think he's as world class out half though.
Modern day 10s have become to methodical and mechanical (there are some benefits to that) but it makes it difficult to get our heads around Smith because he is totally not like that. I think he is the one and the reason is actually not the typical one...for me it's because he has passion and fire, you can see it in the way he celebrates every gain. England seems to mellow and has no steam.
Yeah completely. We'll probably see Slade get scapegoated before long too. One of the most talented centres in the world and the only time he gets the ball it's been shovelled to him out of hope and desperation. Might as well put Sam Simmonds or Genge at 13 the way England are trying to play.
Farrell is the captain so ofcourse he plays a big part in the team. I agree one or the other should play at #10 but why do you think it was a disgrace to play him against France ? Are you saying Farrell should have played against France at #10 ?
@@patrickchilds2987 just didn't seem fair to give him his first proper shot in 6N with actual centres who still are not used to each other against arguably the world's best team. Why not trial it against Italy or Wales? Having said that, I thought the kid showed proper grit. I've also come to admire just how much defiance Farrell brings to the team. I just think you pay a price in creativity for it.
@@patrickchilds2987 disgrace was a bit harsh. I think it's unfair to throw Smith into the mix and expect him to change how England attack. The speed of ball he got from JVP was awful, if Smith is to be given a fair shot he needs players around him of a similar mindset and the team just isn't in the right place at the moment unfortunately. England need a big shake up, they need to go with Smith or Ford at ten and they need to build an attack around quick ball and playing flat. Throwing in Smith expecting him to work miracles with a team used to playing a kicking based territory game and then immediately dropping him was really poor.
Gone are the days of England being able to dominate physically, even if we're able to do it to some teams we're always going to struggle against SA and France if we try and rely on that, case in point - the world cup final. Unfortunately the premiership is being bossed by three sides who play 10 man rugby. Scotland and Ireland have shown that with the right coaching there is enough talent up here to unlock defenses. A few years ago you'd struggle to pick a Scottish player who would get into the England team and now the opposite is true. Scotland haven't suddenly unearthed a trove of superstars and the English players haven't become bad. They're just playing rugby from ten years ago and it's not working anymore.
At least Farrell can dip in the shoulder from time to time when needed, Marcus Smith frequently gets 'ragged dolled' by the big Defences like France and South Africa...
Spot on , until England go with the mindset to make things happen and play at pace rather than play territory first they will not get back to the top of world rugby, competitive maybe but serial winners no chance. Playing to win is different to playing not to lose, one has no frontiers while the other has boundaries.
I fear Smith could end up another Cipriani looking at the way Borthwick has England playing and Smith's defensive fragility Borthwick could see Smith as a luxury player .
I think Borthwick doesn’t have a clue how to coach skill full players, he’s used to coaching robots and work horses that just run lines, tackle, kick and chase kicks, England are in serious need of an attack minded coach, there’s so much talent going to waste because of Borthwick’s boring game plan
If you want to successfully pick Marcus Smith for England, then you’ve got to change the other players from 1 through to 9 and from 11 through to 23….. Seriously!
Danny Care is better than any England 9 currently and if Smith plays with him, great, otherwise Smith will struggle because he is not all encompassing and especially when the chips are down. Danny Harlequins are great because of you. End of!!!
Irish guy here who is amazed and tbh relieved at how England have ignored the talent that is Danny Care. The best English 9 this last decade but for some reason they don’t pick him.
Smith has a very annoying hair issue and over done hop / goose step. I only see OF at 10 for the RWC - and on. More attacking mindsets require a pack to make that possible. I’d bring in some new props for the bench, Chessum and Ribbans as the locks, Lawes / Itoje on the bench, Ludlum as 8, Dombrandt on the bench.
Even if you provide evidence for his 'probably' being the highest paid, that would only make those who pay him disgruntled at least. At the height of his career in international rugby, he was nothing compared to the top players.
Smith and Kyle Sinckler are over rated in my opinion. Sinckler is great in the scrum but makes to many mistakes elsewhere. Smith has great awareness but tends to kick far to often for my liking. We need to keep the ball in hand and work our way to a try rather than this kick and hope mentality. Yes it works occasionally but it’s becoming an obvious tactic.
Got to disagree with Danny here. You cannot have a 10 who is so incredibly weak in defense. "Bridge the gap to the best in the world?" He's going to have big boys running at him none stop, knowing he's a hole in the making.
I think you only say that about Marcus Smith because he is smaller than Farrell. Give us some actual stats about Smith’s defense, not just an opinion based on size. People say similar unsupported statements about Finn Russell making loads of mistakes trying to be a maverick player. Never seen any stats to back that up either! It’s like listening to Vicky Pollard!

Amazing the insights of fellow players about fellow players, and then you get a completely different perspective about the player afterwards...
Smith has a long way to go and I wish him all the luck in the world
If Smith is to play better in a 10 shirt to Farrel, you have to change out more than just Farrell. Start with 6,7,8,9, 12 and 13.

Smith and Care are what England need
What do you mean, a couple of halfbacks who can't tackle?
Smith needs a powerful forward pack
As does Farrell

THIS
YESSSSS 100% they both operate at the same pace
Next World Cup cycle yes
And we have to give them time, at least a year/ 10 games together
To get the best out of MS you need to have attacking threats at 8,9 and 12...England lack in all these areas

Care should be part of the England squad, he has more big game temperament, than two current incumbents combined.
Smith and care in an england team🌹🏉
The problem that Smith has is that Farrell runs the England team. They can’t play 10/12 together. Throwing him in against the French was a disgrace.
