I just discovered your channel yesterday. I just brought my first double bass. I play the electric bass and have been playing the electric bass for 30 plus years. I want to learn the double bass. I love how you are teaching. This will be my first song to learn how to play and practice on the double bass. Thanks.
These deep dives are great! I appreciate how you cover not just the notes and rhythm but also the finer style points. Would love to see one of these for Footprints! Thanks for your great instruction :)
Thanks and for sure Footprints is on the list. The issue is that the turnaround is SO complicated once you start to investigate it, I always need more time to try and both fully digest it and try to make it palatable in a sort of summary - but it's on the list!
When I was younger it was all about speed and learning complex riffs. Now I find some of the easiest songs like this with can be the most challenging to keep an interesting rhythmic part to. These parts beg for player variations and subtleties to keep the listener interested.
This bass line, like All Blues, is repetitively simple. A good 32-bar solo is always a welcome break from the inevitable monotony, when gigging one of these iconic grooves. I'm surprised that neither Ron nor Paul took solos in the original recordings of either song.
Excellent choice. Got it immediately, had that rewarding sense of accomplishment and success, and then settled in to listen to what else was going on in the song, just as you advised. Wondering if anybody else is fighting the urge to jump up another half step (continuing to play the pattern) for the last two measures of the Db before the double stop? Yeah, it seemed like a good idea, but it doesn't exactly serve what everyone else is doing, adds a lot of tension wrecking the laid back groove and would likely earn you a nasty side eye from Herbie. FWIW - the square vs round note idea is one that makes a lot of sense.
Great lesson - really clear and thanks! As an interesting reference, Mr Carter plays the F- section up the neck on the A string in this version: ruclips.net/video/2VN8zH366M8/видео.htmlsi=kt_Zpp4pmAu5Zlfl&t=59 You can also see where he plays the double stops (using the open D). Obviously this quite a long time after the recording so I'm sure he played quite a few variations over the years....
Gotta tellya mr matt ..this swing stuff ..i like it ..reminds of nat king cole ..the music would play he.d be smokin and adjusting his cufflinks an such n soforth..then he.d sing ..a bit of a smile to the audience a lil brush of ash of his sleeves ..and some more sing with these lil pauses .. i.ve noticed karen carpenter attacked a song in the same way ..but without the cigarette 😁anywhos ..that was i good lesson .pip pips n carryon pilgrim.

Hi again John and thanks for asking! Sometimes I’m able to, yeah - it kind of depends on a few things. Feel free to email if you wanna talk more
