  • CORRECTION as noted in the comments below, I was wrong that "St. Louis Blues" has Paul Chambers on bass - it's actually Sam Jones.

As @flippaul mentions in the comments, the bassist on "St. Louis Blues" from "Red in Bluesville" is Sam Jones, not Paul Chambers as I mention in the video. Thanks @flippaul!

For the New Orleans 2 feel, I think about sounding like a Sousaphone in a N.O. brass band. That's the source of many of those licks. A tuba player needs space to breath and the line can't get too busy. (In general - I'm not knocking tuba players. There are players who can play incredibly complex lines).

Another Sam Jones 2-feel to check out is the classic “Autumn Leaves” on Cannonball’s “Somethin’ Else”…easy to hear and super swinging!

Arvell was remarkable. Pops Foster also for the tuba like 2 feel. Great segment!!

Great videos. Thanks for doing these and providing the pdfs that go with them. That really helps the students. FYI, I think the bass player on "Red in Bluesville" might be Sam Jones, not Paul Chambers.

I live in Australia. A while back I was watching a Louis Armstrong video recorded in early 60's. I noticed on Mack the knife the bass player was feeling in 2 but with a 2 bar pattern, generally 2 in the first bar , a bit syncopated in the second bar, so I got my bass out and roughly played a long with it.

May I ask which strings your‘re using? I‘m very much interested in going synthetic as well. Great video! Thanks

Sure - they're Gerold Gennsler strings from Germany. The "Corax" model. Unfortunately he doesn't make them anymore but he has lots of other good strings too. Thanks for your kind words and for watching!

Great video. A lesson on the orgins and feel of 4 feel (is that the right term) e.g Walter Page would be a great followup to this. Thanks.

Hi great video, but can it be possible to film the bottom of the fingerboard to see/know what cord your are playing ? Or maybe a split image with top and below section. That will be nice to learn the best. Hope that can help out and others.. thanks for video

Thanks for the compliment and for your message! I’m not sure what you mean about seeing “what cord” I’m playing. Do you mean what string I’m playing?
I’m trying to understand what you’re asking to answer as best I can
