Brilliant, it suddenly struck me listening to this that The Smiths weren't all about Morrissey and Marr (love them as I do) but Andy and Mike as well. The bass lines in the songs are often the most prominent factor in how good the songs are. So underrated as a bass player, he was just class and the songs wouldn't have been the same without him, which is why he was in the band. RIP Andy, always in our hearts.
great video. i still can’t believe Andy is gone. i grew up listening to The Smiths. such incredible songs. never be another band like them. loved your playing. you’re very talented! RIP Andy 🙏🏻💔
He was a genius player, essential to the sound of the band. It's quite amazing that he stood out the way he did when the guitar player in your band is Johnny Marr but he did. Listening to The Smiths with earphones is the best way to realise how incredible he was, those basslines are beautifully melodic and with a very personal style immediately recognisable.
After watching a few Smiths bass cover videos today, including some really good ones, I have to say that this is the first one where someone is attacking the strings with the bit of aggression that is needed! Great job! That hard pick attack is essential!
Very saddened to hear that Andy Rourke has left us. He was way too young, 3 years younger than me. Though whilst he was here, he contributed to the world in many ways. Well played Andy.
Yk, johnny marr + andy rourke were a f melodic + ryhmic enterprise running on every song by The Smiths..seems to me they are fully responsable for one of the trademarks of the smiths sounds, those absolute stunning rythmic / melodic enterprise running through rickenbackers & fender jaguars by Marr and the cold blooded ace fender precision by Rourke. Only can find paralell on the music on this era on the Television rythmic and solo guitars section. The Strokes also are heavily influenced by this shit, even if them are not fully aware of it but i bet they are. Long live Marr / Rourke melodic/rythmic session, those brillant arrengements combined together are precious, timeless and one of The Smiths most intrincated secret treasures. Great job on this, my friend, congrats.
Guillermo, that is, without doubt, the best rendition of Andy Rourke's basslines that I've ever heard for those tracks. Superb...note for note...spot on dude!! BRAVO!! Coops
Great job! Plenty more Smiths songs with great bass lines. You could easily make another video like this. As others have said, Barbarism Begins at Home, Hans In Glove, The Headmaster Ritual are a couple great ones for another bass video.
Amazing playing! Seeing this made me realize Andy is equally brilliant as Johnny. They both push the music with beautiful and technical playing like no one else. What a great band...and sound! Thanks for that great video...well done!
Hi, this is really great. Have a question on Charming Man. How did you play this on standard tuning. I can play along in your video but when i search for this song the tuning is way different
Great, it helped me to figure out two doubts i had on bigmouth... though i keep hearing a f# the end of the second main riff. insted you go down and well, it seems that it souds better...
Hi! 95% of the tone is just a clean P bass sound. Then EQ just a little. Cut trebble searching for a warm sound. I did this with a 100 dolar bass and a GK simulator. Im sure you can archieve this tone ;)
@@GuillermoLescano Thanks for quick response Guillermo, I have a P Bass myself im just thinking for when Im playing it live. Im going for a Boss CE-2 chorus effect pedal, and will look into either a Trace Elliot/Ampeg amp. Will cut on the treble though!!! Awesome video
Hi, Guillermo!! Great video!!! Can you tell me something about this bass? It sounds really good but I wonder if is it worth for small gigs, if the quality of the instrument worth some future upgrades? There is not to much information about it on the net, I read that the body is not made of solid wood but plywood, does it have a good resonance and natural sustain unplugged? Is all original? Did you change the eletric and the pickup? How are the tuners, the bass stay in tune decently, or it needs better tuners. The neck is thick or thin? I need a cheap P bass for small gigs and I´m researching this model but I don´t wanna spend to much in upgrades. Sorry for my poor english. Best regards!
Hello, thanx! Its a super cheap Samick bass. Its a ok bass, nothing great but its has a really good volume. The relation price/money its very good. Its a nice bass and i was thinking in put a Dimarzio mic. Sorry for my poor english too ;)
Thanks very much for the reply, Guillermo!! Don´t worry about the english, as long we undersstand each other it´s fine! So, your bass is still stock and do you think it worths a pickup upgrade, am I right? Glad to know it!! Do you gig wtih this bass, it holds the tuning well? Best regards!
Everybody talks about Marr's great guitar parts, rightfully so, but Rourke's bass parts are equally impressive.
Most definitely.
I think one can very reliably say The Smiths are the most important band since The Beatles. Such an impressive body of work.
I believe Marr wrote the guitar and bass parts
@@Craicfox161 No he didnt. He confirmed that it was Rourke on an Instagram ama a while back.
Smiths is one of those bands where everyone was on point. Guitars, bass, drums, everything was top notch.
@@adr1ew name one bad smiths song
Smiths would not be the same without Andy. Such an underrated and underlooked bassist.
Totally!
Overlooked, not underlooked (no such word).
Here, in my country, Brasil, Andy was always praised by the music journalism and musicians as a trully talented and creative bass player.
This is truer than ever. R.I.P. Andy
you would like to include barbarism begins at home too
I'm thinking of shooting a new video, probably playing the song you're mentioning
Yes, that would be amazing!
Your comment took me to that song. It's an amazing song! Thank you!
Agreed
Not saying the bass line isn't sick, but that's my least favorite The Smiths song of them all.

Descansa em paz Andy 😔🎸

RIP Andy 🙏🏻💔
Andy Rourke the best
GREAT playing! This just proves what a genius Andy Rourke was on bass for The Smiths.
Jamie Scott Palmer totaly underestimated.people go on about Morrissey and marr.. but forget what amazing bass lines they are
Jamie Scott Palmer He was great but marr did write a lot of his pieces tho
It's pointless for me to say this but, this is the first time I saw someone play bass where grass is visible
it means a lot to me
i found this really wholesome and funny for some reason. bless both of you. Lol
I go outside less frequently than I change my strings
These could easily be Smiths lyrics.
He’s playing for bambi and friends

rest in peace andy, heaven knows we're miserable now

Andy came up with the perfect lines to make the songs what they are: Epic Classics.
Such a great musician 😢🙏
I never dug red guitars, but that matte pickguard really brings it all together.
And that rosewood fretboard complements tha black pickguard with that dark red color makes it feel like some sort of sports car or something
Yeah that’s a beautiful bass man. Is it a Fender?
@@jeorgewatson it is a Samick. They have Jazz Bass style neck.
Very saddened to hear that Andy Rourke has left us.

Now Andy is gone and the dream of a reunion is over 😢

Godness that was SWEET! Beautiful sounding bass...esp on the high notes. Thx for sharing :-)
*Beautiful!*
My fav is 'Charming Man' there's just nothing as quirky and catchy and original.
I could watch this all day. Thank you.
The melancholy of stop me if.... hits every time I listen to it ... 35 years now
I only realized recently that Rourke was inventing all these lines when he was about 20 yo.
A sigh of joy and a smile is what this video gave me. Thanks :)
Love the Smith's baselines
You do a great job playing them
Thanx man
The Headmaster ritual and Frankly Mr. Shankly must be there to !!

Totally TRUE!!!! heaven knows I'm miserable now is such a SUPERB BASSLINE!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✊🏼👍🏼
Outstanding! Andy is a VERY UNDER RATED Bass Player! Some of The most melodic bass lines I ever heard.
love rourke lines :) great job!
He is dangerously underrated.
andys bass lines, astounding
Very nicely done!
I would totally be in a Smiths cover band with you dude. You’re spot on.
If you come to Berlin that could happen ;)

So glad to hear Bigmouth Strikes Again on this! Such a fun song to play 😁
Great Job Mate from Los Angeles! Andy is the most underrated bassist ever!
Barbarism begins at home, please!
Bravo Guillermo 👍👍👍
They were 4 great musicians who didnt write one bad song
Where did you get your bass?
I bought it for 100 dollars on internet. Now I have a 800 dollars fender player and I miss it
Genial! Excelente trabajo!!! Muy infravalorado el trabajo de Andy y en general de The Smiths, pero son brillantes! Saludos
Amazing, though I think 'barbarism begins at home' deserves to be on there, too
Great video! Greetings from Monterrey, Mexico.
Hi, this is really great. Have a question on Charming Man. How did you play this on standard tuning. I can play along in your video but when i search for this song the tuning is way different
Hi! I just changed the tuning of the song
Where's Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now?
THSTS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING, hello 2 years later lol
Nice bass, nice selection, well done. Very cool
Thanks!
"Stop Me If You Think Youve Heard This One Before" looks like a good string skipping exercise

Use light gauge strings, tune up to F#, and put some chorus on.
The Smiths bass line is the best !!
bass lines spin in my mind with my hands clasped with James Dean. 🤼🏼
No “Hand In Glove”??
