When it comes to Sumire's counseling session, if isolated and out of context, Maruki's examples of thought exercises such as "Would that person do this?", "This person wouldn't do that", "Can you still imagine what your sister was like?" and "If your sister was in your shoes, what do you think she'd do?" could be considered as him helping her understand and navigate through the "bargaining" stage of her grieving process... In context, IT REALLY IS a man supporting delusions and making a girl dissociate from her own identity😬
Honestly the more times I revisit Royal, the more I’m utterly disgusted and horrified by Maruki’s methods in his sessions with Sumire and the Phantom thieves. I get what happened to Rumi and her parents was tragic and awful. But that trauma and incident is not an excuse for Maruki to do what he does with the brainwashing and everything in the third semester.
Yeah, while Maruki definitely had his own stuff going on, how he handled everything with Sumire and his Actualization were just impossibly out of line.
What i think is the worsr about Sumiere is that shes not even Kasumi. Shes the idealized version of her sister that Sumiere made in her head. He took away her real personness. Horrifying
I do think the awkward maruki trait is a cultural thing and well accepted in japan, maybe because it shows selflessness and respect to your clients, idk
