Really grateful to ya for having good readable captions available! So may tutorial videos online don't include them and it means folks like me are left out. THANK YOU!!
This is basically how you make larp safe weapons for the UK so this ended up actually being a really good tutorial for the entire process and not just making a presentation/cosplay piece.
@@SKSProps That would be cool. There's always plenty of weird tricks I've seen people do to give their weapon some extra fancieness. Like adding sheet lead to weight the handle or making an impromptu core for an axe by wrapping a small piece in kevlar tape so it doesn't rip off if you try to hook shields. Who knows. If you do some latp specific videos maybe the US will start to move away from buffers and pool noodles.
Just bought the basics today. 12FT by 3 FT strips of EVA Foam. A small 8 Oz can of Contact cement Dap. 80GRT, 100GRT, and 120GRT Sand Paper. Sharp Utility Knife. Hand Saw. Mask and Safety Goggles. Dremel Kit. 5 ft Fiberglass Rod. 10PK of Paint Sticks. And safety Gloves... Wish me luck! Will post results on my IG
Unfortunately I didn't get an "Exacto Knife" or "Hobby Knife" I got a utility knife and it is NOWHERE near sharp enough to pass through the foam cleanly in one go...
Great work! That leather wrap is just so amazing. I'm blown away that it's foam and not actual leather. Your painting skills are really fantastic. Keep up the great work sir! :)
@@SKSProps yes, I remember you mentioned so on a livestream. Since you also explained that Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic wasbetter quality paint, that’s what I’ve been using. You used it during college, correct? Still, your painting transfers very well to prop making.

Great work making it look so real. The fiberglass rod core is a great idea. I just used your link to order foam sheets and half round dowels! Hope you're making some money through your partnership with Blick!
You're welcome! I've got a really old blade on that bandsaw that's dull but works great on foam. I just picked up a "Foam blade" from McMastercarr I plan on trying on my other bandsaw
Thanks! No I don’t ever seal my props or costumes that kills the matte vs metallic sheen once everything is covered with a semigloss or matte spray. I just let the paints speak for themselves 👍
The axe head remains pretty rigid and you could hit something and it should be fine. Again the higher the density of the foam the more likely it is to stand up to wear and tear
thanks so much, also during the shaping step would only a knife work, or do I also need rotary tools? I know you said I don’t need a sander but I wasn’t sure if I could only use a knife or not
@@ToasterInaFridge you can use a knife to get the rough shape. But if you’re going to be doing more foam work invest in a rotary tool. They aren’t very expensive check out the review I did on the Wen version a while back
@@SKSProps my main concern is that I currently live overseas and will be moving back to the states in the next few months so dealing with shipping, and voltage problems are the main reasons I’m not currently investing in a rotary tool but I will once I move back to the states

You’re very welcome! I think it very important to make all of my techniques available to everyone 👍
I'm always so impressed by your painting skills!
Thanks! Remember I went to art school for illustration so painting is kind of my specialty 😉
your painting work just instantly brings the prop alive, wow!
Thank you! Paint makes the prop!
Look amazing, every realistic looking!

Hey SKS Props! I love your tutorials! Create an appealing intro & theme for your videos. Give us a unique personality to go with it! :)

Nice, not quite like the double beard 2 handed one a barbarian queen at Ren Faire wielded, but good looking none the less

Thank you for the excellent tutorials and templates. Keep them coming! One question? What blade are you using on your bandsaw?
You're welcome! I've got a really old blade on that bandsaw that's dull but works great on foam. I just picked up a "Foam blade" from McMastercarr I plan on trying on my other bandsaw
@@SKSProps Got it! So check out the Dull Blade section at Home Depot!! I will have to check out McMastercarr for their foam blades.
Awesome builds, Steve! Did you seal the paint job using some clear coat of something?
Thanks! No I don’t ever seal my props or costumes that kills the matte vs metallic sheen once everything is covered with a semigloss or matte spray. I just let the paints speak for themselves 👍
Steve I got a question does the ax head flap around and would it be safe to say hit things with it, not hard of course?
The axe head remains pretty rigid and you could hit something and it should be fine. Again the higher the density of the foam the more likely it is to stand up to wear and tear
@@SKSProps thanks I appreciate your help and advice. Thanks for your videos and templates as well.
Just saw this video great build. Might be a silly question would this axe be suitable to be used in LARP Battles?
The design would be fine. but while my foam is great for holding and carving details larp groups require a different type of foam for combat.
@@SKSProps Thank you i will try and source the foam
What is the thickness of the fiberglass rod?
Most fiberglass yard markers like that are around 1/4”
So I know you probably won’t see this but would a dowel work instead of the fiberglass rod?
I read all of my comments 👍
it could it just isn’t near as strong for the diameter. So don’t use it for larp or smack anything to hard
thanks so much, also during the shaping step would only a knife work, or do I also need rotary tools? I know you said I don’t need a sander but I wasn’t sure if I could only use a knife or not

Hd foam or eva foam?
Hd foam is eva foam but a higher quality in the density so it sands smoother, cuts cleaner, and holds details better
What if no bandsaw?
Then just use a utility knife a bandsaw is just a shortcut but all of my original builds were done with a knife
Anybody knows how long od this Axe?
If you print off the pdf correctly it will scale the template to size
But it’s approx 24” long
@@SKSProps thx man! I just was curious
Do you still use your RZ mask around the shop ?
Yes, I use my rz for foam dust and the 3m for spray paints and primers
