  • Why is 3D scanning so hard to use, and how does Revopoint do it right?

    Thank you for this fantastic video!
    We want to share some exciting updates:
    The software you demonstrated has been updated to Revo Scan 5, making it even more intuitive and efficient for both scanning and post-processing.
    POP 3 came out last year and brings some great improvements over its predecessor, POP 2.
    Thank you one more time.

    Even though it's only $700, it's hard to justify for something that I would hardly ever use. It would be cool if office supply stores or libraries would have one that you could either rent or use on site.

    Best review/discussion I've seen on this topic. Thank you!

    I have supported Revopoint on Kickstarter and have had every version of scanner produced by them. Each time a new version came out I moved on the version I had and was able to understand the improvements made with each new version. As well as the constant upgrades to the equipment, the software has constantly been improved and the scanning process has continued to improve. I have had a number of other 3d Scanners before the Revopoint programme started, but none of them were anywhere near as good as the Revopoint experience. I currently have the Mini , Range and Miraco versions so am able to cover a good range of scanning sizes.

    Really good analysis and the pros and cons. I have followed 3D scanning and it is not yet where I want to jump into it, cost vs the need are too far apart

      With AI we will soon be there

      How? That last thing I need is a scan of part I make to have a random eyeball on the side because AI didn't know what to fill that space with.

    For a low budget 3D scanning method, I used an Xbox Kinect (v2) with the program KScan3D 1.2 to make a Haunted Mansion styled inverted bust for Halloween of myself and the fam. I did have to touch them up in Blender a bit to smooth things out but it turned out awesome!

      I have one of those and it works surprisingly well.

    have you looked at creality scanners?
    not sure if chicken and egg, but the revopoint and creality scanner lines look to be the same solutions, just different brands

      I'll be looking at them soon.

    I got the Revopoint Inspire for half the price of a Pop 3. Only difference I see is Pop 3 has 0.1mm accuracy and Inspire has 0.2mm accuracy. I don't feel like I'm missing out on detail. I've been pretty happy with it.

    Tell him about ferret CE which I got for 220 euros with the same featureset and higher scan framerate...

    Did you scan your head with this scanner? What is the largest optimum size object it can scan?

      Anything bigger than a bust doesn't work for me. But it does busts well.

      I mean a head and shoulder. A bust. Not... nevermind.

    How does it compare to Photogrammetry?

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 месяца назад

      Interesting question. I should do a video. But, based on my experience the answer is:
      Detail is about the same.
      However, the scans have no scale to them.

    My revopoint had a ssh backdoor with a root password of “internet” so I stopped using it and uninstalled their software because I could not trust a company with such poor security practices

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  2 месяца назад

      At least it wasn't "password".

      @@3dpprofessor hmmm, maybe I have a high bar due to my experience in cybersecurity. One thing that is clear, if security is not a priority at every level, it’s not a priority at any level thus shouldn’t be trusted at all.

    Actually, good software could make a good scanner out of a decent phone. place and object on a fiducial paper, bob is your uncle.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  16 дней назад

      There have been several attempts at this over the years. The problem is a phone just isn't powerful enough to run photogrammetry calculations by itself, so most of the calculations was offloaded to the cloud. The result of which is expensive server costs on something that people just wasn't doing very often.
