lp.constantcon... INTERVIEW CLIP #5 - Why Jim Messina Chose Kenny Loggins Over Dan Fogelberg
This story is a perfect example of maybe you want something, maybe you're sure that's the thing to do but just maybe you don't have the best choice is out of sight and perhaps just around the corner. Your life can change on a dime. Chance is a funny tricky fellow. After he spent time with Buffalo Springfield on their last album as a member and producer and doing the same with Poco for their first two studio albums and first live project he wanted to go home to produce and right. But Messina was in demand and possibilities came knocking from a few artists most notably Dan Fogelberg and Kenny Loggins.
INTERVIEW CLIP
Loggins and Messina charted 10 songs on the Billboard Top 100, three in the Top 40. Their biggest hit was “Your Mama Don't Dance” which peaked at #4. There's been a few reunions through the years and the pair remain close. Coming up next week how it all fell together for Loggins and Messina.
Jim Messina has an amazing memory doesn't he? He is doing shows this year right up to November. Go to Jim Messina.com for details. We'll have more of our conversation with Jim in one week. - by John Beaudin

Though I've always loved Loggins and Messina music, I'm so glad Dan stayed on his own. No one will ever be more talented than he was. No one.
Talented is right, from performing all of the vocals to playing most of the instruments to drawing his own album cover designs. And his music was awesome.
I agree. I think it couldn't have worked out any better for all 3 of them.
Could not have said it better ! Messina's rejection of Dan Fogelberg at age 19 was a part of the process of Dan Fogelberg's true reliance upon himself to work every aspect of his creating independently. He Soared ! A fan of all 3 musicians but Dan knew how to do it his way too. A Huge Fan Base and Legacy to this day and Ever On !
Dan was amazing and the beauty of his lyrics flowed through everyone that listened. Beautiful! ❤️
❤️
DF didn't need a partner! Poet, master musician. He stood out among many of his contemporaries as an artist, Truly
Actually he did.
No artist has ever produced his own stuff, before getting famous.
DF needed Joe Walsh and not Jim Messina.
Dan Fogelberg was the most talented musician in recent times. If you look beyond his radio hits you will see his music and lyrical talents..
Probably all have the same criticism of Jim Croce too....Put Massina behind a piano and see if he can sell out & captavate a 5,000 seat area...Awesome acoustic concert!
Dan was a minstrel who stayed true to himself. Because of his art his music resonated with a segment of society who appreciated the brilliance of his songs on love, mother nature and his love for the open water as a mariner. He was not an industry lemming and for that we have the gift he left his audience. By the way, his great songs are not limited to the radio hits and are found within his library of songs. So glad he stayed true to his artistic direction and did not join a partnership beyond Tim Weisberg.
I could not agree more. Awesome dude, true to himself and the music!
Amen
Beautifully stated. Totally agree.
Well said!!!
Agreed. Truly a remarkable man. I saw an interview where he said that he started out looking to become an professional artist painting pictures, but the music business became more lucrative. Seems to be a very grounded and soulful person. Not clamoring the limelight. But still very successful in his own right.
Dan Fogelberg doesn't get the credit he deserves.
And there is a reason for that...........HE DOESN'T DESERVE IT PERIOD .
@@yescarycan Really? Then why are you listening... Dan was such a sweet soul. You don’t deserve to hear Dan.
I completely agree with you....
Sometimes I think Dan had a depth to his music that wasn't appreciated by the general public. I like all but one of his songs and his biggest hits are good, but as far as I'm concerned, not nearly his best work.
@yescarycan Another rube who only knows Dan's pop hits. Remember that "pop hits" means "appealed to the general public," i.e., not a group known for their depth of music appreciation.
Listen to ALL of "Nether Lands" and "The Innocent Age" and then we'll talk.
Loggins and Messina were so wonderful together. Their songs are so beautiful.
Dan is my all-time favorite, and Kenny was before Dan was....Kenny had one of the top power male voices of the era, while Dan had the complete package of writer, poet, musician. Hard to compare them, but it was probably best that Kenny got the gig with Messina, as Dan was always more of a solo artist, and true to satisfying himself with his risk-taking releases.
My all time favorites, as well. I was lucky enough to see Dan in concert several times. What a loss. Love KL, as well. Amazing artists.
Good comment.
In my book Dan Fogleberg was the best singer songwriter there ever was. RIP Dan. Thank you.
❤️
Dan was great, but when he came to Messina, all he had were songs that sounded heavily like Poco, Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield etc. Kenny Loggins walked in with mind blowing original songs like Danny's Song and House at Poo Corner that he wrote when Dan Fogelberg was still in middle school. Dan still needed more time to develop his style and he got that chance from Norbert Putnam. But even after Dan developed his style, Kenny Loggins was still better at creating popular songs that were loved by everyone compared to Dan, who was loved mostly by college students but not on a more popular level. It wasn't until the 80s that Dan starting writing more popular songs that had a broader appeal.
Dan Fogelberg is a true artist, not a sellout. A true artist
We saw Kenny Loggins in concert in the early 80’s, he did put on a great concert but my family were and always will be Dan Fogeburg fans. R.I.P Dan Fogerburg. Dan Fogeburg put out some beautiful music. Thanks for sharing.✌️🦆
Dan Fogelberg stands alone as a singer/songwriter, an amazing musician! Always a fan, no one better in that arena! Miss him!
But Dan Fogelberg turned out to be great as well. His lang zyne is one of the best ever written along with Leader of the band. Fantastic
Dan Fogelberg was absolutely brilliant...I'm so glad he never joined ANYBODY.
Also glad Df had this interaction with Loggins. He did not need to sound like Poco. (Now Poco is one of my favorite bands of all time don't get me wrong, but Fogelberg developed a sound that was all his own and possibly influenced by that interview he went back inside to look for it.)
Me Too. Dan is my Favorite Artist!!!
I first saw Dan Fogelberg perform at the Red Herring in Champagne Illinois. I like many of his early songs without all the strings and things, just a piano and/or guitar and his voice--simple and from the heart.
❤️
Well in one interview of Dan Fogelberg. He said something about liking his music first and not to kowtow to commercial aspect. So he writes his songs in the manner how he likes and wants it and not being dictated of what will sell. Of course he has been grateful having plenty of followers regardless.
Fogelberg's Innocent Age is my second favorite album. Every song is special.
That’s 100% Dan. He never recorded to achieve popularity. Just wanted to follow what moved him and let the chips fall where they will. I respect that.
I may sound very superficial, but Loggins and Fogelberg were both very easy on the eyes in their day. Messina, too.
That counts, sells records and can open doors.
That’s all very interesting... Dan actually benefited tremendously from Norman Putnam who helped him make contacts and manage his career. One of the best things Dan did, via Putnam, was form his own record label “full moon records”. This gave him the freedom to make the music he did. Dan also got to work with Joe Wash and other studio musicians for decades...
Everything happens like it should. Im glad Dan did his thing solo. He was SO talented...rock, blues, his own harmonies, solo concerts...I enjoyed them all for x 25 yrs.
Norbert was an excellent producer and bass player. Listen to Eric Andersen's Blue River album.
I never knew any of this - thank you for sharing this. I guess, either way the universe has a way of making things work out as they should. Both Dan Fogelberg and Loggins and Messina gifted the world with a tremendous amount of beautiful music in their own right. I'd like to think that things worked out just as they should have.
Boy talk about a comment on some of our boomer generation. No tape? No instrument? It’s amazing that Jim even listened to him. My dad was a WW2 vet. His mantra was to be prepared and anticipate. If you were 15 minutes early, you were late. Great interview series Brother John. Looking forward to the next one. God bless.
Jim Messina has always been the man. Love his production, love his voice, love his guitar. A unique tone and style. Was fortunate to see him live a few times. Everyone should study Jim Messina. Cheers Jim.
Rejecting Dan Fogelberg made him realize that he could do it all and soar he did !
He could write the lyrics and the music. He could play all the instruments and mix the songs. He could work the sound board, produce, market and promote plus put on insanely magnificent shows ! Dan is so missed. and so loved !
Ever On !
🍃❣️🍃
Interesting! Loggins & Messina still is one of my favorites to listen to. They were genius on stage. Loved their band.Saw them 4 times. Thanks, enjoyed your interview. Looking forward to the continuation.
Great interview, with the inside story. I listened to both - but I only had one L&M album and bought everything Dan made. Saw Dan live twice.
Dan Fogelberg was so amazing. Listen to Scarecrow's Dream from Netherlands.
Omygosh, I played the Netherlands album so much in college, and once in a while for years after, that my record is nearly unplayable now with worn skips and pops. "Scarecrow's Dream" is one of the more worn grooves.. Oooohh..... that album...
Guess I know what I have to do now...
Great song! Souvenirs!
Glad Dan remained on his own.
Interesting interview. Have been a major fan of Messina since the 60's. And of Fogelberg since 1971. They are two of my favorites still today. Think it worked out just like it needed to. That's the genius of this man.
Still play Poco regularly.
Love all of ya !! Especially Dan.
Tim Schidmtt.
Mother Lode in my top 10.
That is a sublime album. 🙏
He did the world the greatest unexpected favor! Dan is peerless!
Nice to know He’s the guy who got Kenny Loggins singing.!
Thank you for that Loggins is a good singer down home type.! 🇺🇸🙂👍🏼
On August 27,1977 I saw Kenny Loggins, The Marshall Tucker Band and Fleetwood Mac in concert at the University of Arizona football stadium in Tucson, Arizona - It was Fleetwood Mac's Rumours tour - Rest In Peace Christine McVie and I have seen Dan Fogelberg in concert 10 times got his autograph twice on 2 of his songbooks and I drew 2 pictures of Dan that were given to him at a concert in 2002 at the grove venue in Anaheim, California and I wrote this poem for Dan and had it framed and the stage manager when I was at Dan's concert in July 2000 at Humphrey's by the bay in San Diego, California put it in Dan's dressing room - Rest in Peace Dan
A Poem For Dan Fogelberg
Once again I return to another world … A world only known to poets...
Inadequacy fills my soul… To eulogize the living…
The legacy we think we know… To paint on this page my feelings…
How can one, where does one begin… He commands the poets’ pen…
Cloaks our spirit with his verse… At what cost, at what cost…
His yearning for love forever fills the inkwell… But does the fire fuel the fire…
Does his mistress, the empty page, keep him from redemption…
If so, forget the sirens beckoning and take love…
His song, our song, the song of countless hearts since God’s first breath…
And we’ve been blessed by this, his curse and gift…
His songs make us cry, his tears write his song… For how long, for how long…
Would we trade his music, to set his heart forever free…
To love without restraint, or would one Judas him for a song…
Could I write what he feels when the door is left open…
As he awakens and turns to find only the empty page…
I will try to fill some space for him this time…
How many times must rose petals dry… Falling one by one to the floor…
How many times will hearts shatter… Yet return for the pain once more…
When will the love that is captured… Not change and need to be freed…
When will the need to feel love be fulfilled… Who will fulfill that need…
So now my painting ends… We’ve never met, but we are friends…
From myself and other fans… Thanks again… Thanks again…

I love the backstories! They answer so many ?'s about the who, when, where and why's... John, keep up the great job bringing this info forward.
Wow! Great interview!...Dan Folgelberg, my favorite acoustic artist & Kenny Loggins whom I love all his music. Big decision for Jim. Can't imagine how it'd turned out with Dan but Jim made a good decision. Remember, your momma don't dance & your daddy don't rock n roll!...Thanks, John!...
Jimmy Messina was the best part of L and M. I own so much L and M vinyl. I own Fogelberg's Home Free and I think it's haunting beautiful, unforgettable.
Got to see L and M. Soooo good. Band was awesome.
Loggins and Messina were an amazing phenomenon. Such catchy and touching music when they were hot! I like a lot of Kenny Loggins solo tunes. But I prefer the way Messina gave him something extra.
I love POCO and Jim is excellent at recalling names from so many years ago that is not easy, I could listen to him tell the stories and facts of his career all day, the rock star calendar has 31 days in November.
Hearing JM's reasoning is fascinating. He comes across as professional to the core while also loyal to his own internal compass. That, coupled with his own talent, work ethic and stamina has resulted in a truly worthy career history.
Now that I think about it. At this stage of their careers Dan and Kenny. I think Kenny was a little more needed. Dan could play so many instruments and I think he had one of the most prolific managers in music or in "Rock Music" with Irving Azoff. I think Dan did pretty good. He got Joe Walsh to produce his early album. I like Jim Messina. I think everybody's choices worked for each artist. I value both. At this stage in my life Dan must have been the bigger influencer because I do have most of his albums. I don't know if Dan was a spiritual man but he had a lot of spiritual songs. His depth at understanding the human soul was so great. I think Jim Messina was always restless and not staying to long was always his theme.
Exactly no comparison between the two I mean I like loggins and Messina from what I heard on the radio but they had no depth to their music that would make me dive into their albums. Fogelberg was a different animal all together. Penguins versus an eagle. Both have wings right?
I seem to recall that after opening for them, the Eagles asked Dan F if he would like to join the band. They were going thru some personnel changes with Randy Meisner etc leaving, and Dan knew Joe Walsh well. Would have been a productive, albeit short-lived, collaboration.
The Eagles were managed by Dan's long-time friend from their Champaign/Urbana college days, Irving Azoff. That was more of the connection to the Eagles.
.
Glad he didnt
When I asked about joining the band, Dan told them. “You guys don’t sleep, I need to sleep.”
Because God had much greater things in store for the many talents He gave Dan Fogelberg.
I shared a beer and played jims harmonica with him in 1980 in Victoria, B.C. in a empty bar at 2 in the afternoon. I didn't believe he was who he said he was because I had no mental picture of who he should look like. It was sometime later I saw a picture and realized my mistake. I regretted not giving the man his due respect as I was short on conversation and left. Apologies Jim
Glad Fogelberg went on his own (see charting comparison at the end) & ended up being so much better musically than he would have wasting his time with this as far as being a songwriter, producer and multi-instrumental artist. Teaming up with Messina would have potentially torpedoed his career. We would never have gotten all the incredible music we did and I'm not talking at all about the top 40 stuff that he had to do. I'm talking about all the stuff he wanted to do and did as an artist. Plus, Loggins and Messina were a perfect match for each other (somewhat like Nash and Crosby); to save their careers.
Still, here is a comparison.
Nuff said.........
Fogelberg : 5 double platinum albums vs 3 x 1 platinum's which is still great careers !

1977 Nether Lands 13 - - 51 2 ×Platinum -

1973 Full Sail 10 -

It was all Part Of The Plan.
Oh Ruby Tuesday, So very very True ! Thank you !
Everyone made the right choice Dan Fogelberg had his magnum opus The Innocent Age. With all due respect, Loggins and Messina never did though. They did each other favors.
God, I LOVED Loggins and Messina , just some of the best music ever put to wax. The "orange crate" Poco album is one of my faves, too. Messina was a Telecaster Master!
Yep. One of the great chicken pickers...
Jimmy was one of my favorite guitarists. The whole Loggins and Messina band was top notch! Their albums were slicker than Steely Dan in the early 70's.
I saw Dan at the University of Alabama Huntsville 1982, He played three Rock songs that brought down the house and said "You will never hear that again. My Label will not release it." So Mr. Messina can you find those songs? Maybe release them now? thanks,
POCO was a great band with mid tier popularity because of the Too Rock Too Country trap that type of band had a hard time with .. I'd say Dan was lucky that Messina did not choose him .. Dan a great career on his own terms and going solo was the best way for him ..
Poco was a much better band with a Paul Cotton and Timothy Schmidt
Enjoying these interviews, John!
I'd say both did quite well.
Sitting In. A favorite album of mine in the day 🎶 Would own it again ✌
yeah, dan's ok but when we first heard kenny, we went crazy.
DF was a 1 man CSN & Y
Hi John,
Fascinating interview as always. Very interesting... about Dan Fogelberg.... did not know that..... hence that is why Rock History Music is there. Not surprised about Kenny... such a talented musician and vocalist in his own right. Love Loggins and Messina. Heck, I even bought Loggins.... returning to Pooh Corner.... an album to help ease infants to sleep...... no joke. My son is 21 and he is the one I would play the lullaby songs from Loggins to and to this day he loves Loggins as well. I had to share that.
Thank you,
You bring the Rock n Roll news segment back in my life.... something that I dearly missed.
God bless,
Tino
Love dan
Dan also was looking at forming a band and had one in mind, he took Joan Baez to see the band and she signed them up to work for her!! Haha,... from a Fogelberg interview.
Angry Eyes was my fave Loggins and Messina song.
I recorded my original songs at the same studio where Loggins and Messina recorded, Santa Barbara Sound, in the early 1980s. (Also, Ringo Star, Mike Love, Maynard Ferguson etc.) Interesting interview. I think Messina needed them more than they needed him. Loved Buffalo Springfield.
...it's funny how Jimmy keeps calling Kenny 'a kid' when he is only about a month older than Kenny 'The Kidd' Loggins...hahahaha
saw Logins & Messina, at the Anaheim Convention Center with Rush as their opening act, quite a contrast, never heard of Rush at that time
interesting mix of music.
I think Messina here is talking about PRODUCING either Loggins or Fogelberg, not touring together. Different thing altogether. I guess the idea of touring together came later. As a long time fan of Dan Fogelberg, I don't see him as being interested in a duo thing.
Fogelberg did do two albums with Tim Weisberg
Jim Messina doesn't provide any details of how he was connected with Dan Fogelberg, but it sounds like it might have been during Dan's earliest days, when he was with CBS, which led to 'Home Free', his first album, produced in Nashville by Norbert Putnam. CBS let Dan go to Sony, Irving Azoff (his manager) got Joe Walsh to produce Dan's follow-up album, 'Souvenirs', which was just amazing, and the rest is history. Very providential the way it all worked out!
Good interview.
I'm glad he didn't choose Dan, also glad Dan didn't join the Eagles. Either way, things would have been entirely different.
Wow. I wonder if Dan regretted saying that later. He had one hell of a career anyways, so I’m pretty sure no...
Loggins may have been “chosen,” but as a solo performer Loggins never had the 25+ year song catalogue and dedicated concert-attending fanbase that Fogelberg had. Not. Even. Close.
Meh!
SEEN....
Nah!
You're right....not even close. Long forgot Loggins and Messina after finding Fogelberg....Oh really Messina....Glad he didnt get with Poco....Fogelberg-history proved him to be an awesome songwriter gifted musician and pianist. #Souvenirs
Love and respect to Jim Messina. Poco’s an amazing group of talented musicians, with great songwriting and gorgeous harmonies; hugely influential on alt-country bands like The Jayhawks; and often criminally overlooked.
NOTHING , nothing came through like the Live version of " BE FREE " on Finale' One of the Best Live songs I have ever heard on vinyl , ever !!
Jim turned Kenny into a star. They were great together.
Sittin' In is a remarkable recording.
Wow. I never realized that Jim Messina considered Dan Fogelberg. I now realize that both Loggins and Messina and Dan Fogelberg had similar styles.
EXCELLENT VIDEO⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐♥
Great One thank you 👍
Interesting comments about the flexibility of Kenny's voice. I think Kenny Loggins proved that over the years, and a lot more.
Yes. I think that Loggins got pretty "pop" in his solo career and was nothing special as a guitarist, so a lot of people don't take him too seriously as a musician. But his voice and his ability to use it are pretty special, and he wrote some good songs. A lot of my musician friends find L&M a little fluffy, but going back to their live recordings they put on an excellent show.
great interview
OK. you're walking on holy ground. I shall watch the video...Let's see what you got. EDIT: Great interview!
Both Loggins and Fogelberg are/were great. Perhaps it doesn't matter a whole lot who the producer was.
Interesting piece of history there! Thanks
re: since he bought his first album, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John as a teen...Big coincidence, me too! I had my first job and thought long and hard about the purchase but, obviously, never regretted it.
Both are/were great artists.
Fogelberg is a legend! Messina would have sucked the life out of him.
Did I hear that right? He was ok with Neil? Really? I have never bought a Loggins and Messina album, but owned everything Neil Young and Dan Folgelberg have done.
Worked out best for both.
The irony of this is few today know Jim Messina but many know Kenny Loggjns and Dan Fogelberg. . Jim did Dan a favor by rejecting him and Dan was smart to go with Joe Walsh.
No, Dan went to Producer Norbert Putman who produced his album "Home Free." Norbert had played bass for Elvis and produced Joan Baez. It was Norbert who gave Dan the chance, not Walsh.
Interviewer looks a bit like Robert Downey, Jr.
He does! I thought it was Robert Downy Jr. when I saw the thumbnail.
I just listened to Danny's song, I guess I didn't know the title until now. It was just a really good Loggins and Mesina song.
Kenny wrote that song for his brother when he was in high school . Beautiful song!
I like Dan Fogelberg but let's not hate on Kenny Loggins because he proved to be more successful. Kenny is no slouch either when it comes to songwriting and musicianship. He's a better vocalist too! (yep, that's right!).
Logging is indeed a very gifted muscian, song writer, and vocalist. That said, I find myself in Fogelberg's corner in all 3 categories. There's arguments to be made for both...it's all about an individual's taste. But you cannot go wrong with either!
kenny was...hip!
Yep. Dan still needed more time to develop his style and he got that chance from Norbert Putnam who had played bass for Elvis and produced Joan Baez's hit The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Band cover). But Kenny Loggins is and will always be a better popular songwriter than Dan, who wrote great albums but Dan's popular songs were just never as good as Loggins. Dan's popular stuff just always sounded a bit squishy compared to his album songs, which were brilliant. Loggin's "Danny's Song" and "Poo Corner" are absolute popular masterpieces that are as good as anything the Beatles wrote (Rocky Raccoon, etc).
Why is Tony Stark interviewing Messina?
Ray Mac’s comment is spot on. I don’t think you can truly compare the two.
Great stories
No tapes, no guitar? Then lays down Pooh Corner and Danny's Song?...Whoo, there's something to think about there .
Dan Fogelberg was the winner in that decision.
Love Darkness worldly and Bluegrass. love songs the Raven Serengeti the whole blue grass high Country xp. with all top players. alone or with others Dan life explored way more then what a Duo would have done for him.
I noticed in Jim's last interview, he also said "November 31st". Do you know the significance of that? Just wondering.
When Dan walked out of Jimmy's place,...who did he find as a producer!?
Joe Walsh,...and I highly suggest you Google it, before calling me a liar.
Great Story! Joe Walsh is extraordinary and Dan Fogelberg is A National Treasure! His Ballads are Right with James Taylor!
That's incorrect. Dan went to Producer Norbert Putman who produced his first album "Home Free." Norbert had played bass for Elvis and produced Joan Baez before producing Dan. Norbert heard Fogelberg's genius and decided to give him a chance.
It's because Kenny wasn't afraid to go into the danger zone
Wonder what he thought of Yacht Rock lol
Awesome!
John, please.....who plays the outro tune? And is there more to it, like is it a complete song? Thank you so much!

I love Jimmy Messina but someone needs to tell him November has ONLY THIRTY days.
hath
Dan Fogelberg probably thought that Jim would have loved to make another Poco-type album. Not!
John. I’d love you task Jim about the Oasis album. I really loved it though it was pretty obscure.
