We’ve talked about this song before and had a little interview excerpt from one of them but today we have new interviews with both of these legends. I’m pretty pumped…
It’s the story of The smooth yacht rock classic This is It with the Co-Captains of the genre Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. It doesn’t get better than this.. Two of the most distinct voices ever!!! Michael had was fronting the Doobie Brothers at the time after some time with the Doobie Brothers. He was referred to the Doobies by Skunk Baxter when Tom Johnston was sick and had to step away . and Kenny had gone solo after dominating the 70s as part of the duo Loggins and Messina.
Kenny and Michael came together and wrote the grammy winning #1 hit What a Fool Believes. Both released their own versions but the Doobies version was the hit… but they won the grammy for song of the year and record of the year… After such a massive success they were a bit gun shy to write the next one together afraid of the sophomore jinx so they didn’t pursue it right off the bat until they ran into each other at the supermarket. I’ll let them tell you… A song that started out with a dynamite chorus. that both thought might be a love song until a life changing event happened in one of their lives and pretty much the universe expressed what the song should be about. It’s a great story coming up so jump on the yacht...

in the late 70's I went on a Walk-a-Thon and I met Kenny at about mile 6 or 7. He walked with me and my friends for all 26 miles. He was such a wonderful human being and he kept my group of 5th or 6th graders marching on like little soldiers on a forced march. A very fond memory of mine!

In early March of 1980 I invited my sister to celebrate my birthday with me by going to see Kenny Loggins in the Fieldhouse at BYU. We had great seats near the front and enjoyed every song in the performance. Three weeks later my sister passed away from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Whenever I hear a Kenny Loggins song, and especially this one, I remember with gladness that concert and the great time we had there together. Thank you.
Michael McDonald is so incredibly humble. To say it was such an honor to play with his contemporaries when he himself has given us so much for so many years is very telling.

Yrs ago a co- worker's wife was getting treatments in Nashville - Mr McDonald had a family member going to these treatments as well - He wasn't even aware of who he was until a show was mentioned -

I knew a guy that used to run sound for the Doobie Brothers and he said Michael McDonald was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
When he talks about playing music with the greats like he is just some guy off the street and not one of the greatest singer/songwriters in history is very telling, indeed. Michael seems like a humble man and we are blessed to be able to enjoy his talent.
I met my late wife Jane in 1979 and immediately OUR SONG became What A Fool Believes....after that it was This Is It and our mix cassette tapes were full of Doobies, Kenny, MM....it was the soundtrack to our life together.....thank you Professor for taking me back to 3 of my alltime faves... RIP my Lovely Jane ❤
I never knew that's what the song was about. I was recently diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness myself, and to have this video pop up in my feed today... well, I'm taking it as a sign - my miracle. I'm going to stand up and fight.

So happy you saw this video!! I’ve not been diagnosed with life threatening illness. Rather, had two family members who fought like the dickens to stand up and fight. They beat seemingly insurmountable odds, and provide hope to so many. I wish you and your loved ones well!

Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald are just two of the many reasons I'm happy to call Santa Barbara home; they're both great, talented and humble musicians. I met Kenny many years ago and he lived up to his reputation as being friendly and easy-going. Glad these two are still making music. Actually, Kenny is playing tonight at the Santa Barbara county bowl.
Was at the Kenny Loggins concert last night, 3/12/2023. Blistered the stage!!
I truly respect that Kenny took the key of the song down to his current vocal range. Most of us that grew up with yacht rock before it became a genre are getting up there is years. It sounds SOOOOO much better when an artist accept the limitations of age or other medical issues. Like THE Voice Steve Perry on his Traces album. Still an amazing voice with just the right amount of patina. Not many that can sound that good, much less @ 70 years old. I hope Kenny and Michael keep rockin! We are blessed to have such talent still performing!
I agree. It lets us know that humans are imperfect and allows for more creativity and innovation in music.
Another rare person who still sounds zgreat, and amazingly can still reach his upper vocal registers, is Jon Anderson from Yes. He is 78 now!
He may have lost some range - it's sort of a fact of growing older. But I heard him not too long back, and I was amazed at the range he still has. I don't even know if he picked that version of the song for any reason other than it was a solo acoustic performance.
I've always wondered why everyone's so reluctant to do that, even when they sound horrible.

I worked with Michael on a shoot here in Nashville once. We had a great time interacting. He comes off as a regular guy. I wish I had known about this song. I used to listen to it on a K-tel collaboration album when I was 10. I guess this was a couple of years after he collaborated on Sailing with Christopher Cross. Great songs!
Saw Michael McDonald with Donald Fagen and Boz Scags as the Dukes of September.around six years ago. One of the most enjoyable music experience's.

I have always been a Michael McDonald fan, and after hearing this interview, and hearing his humility, I am even a bigger fan. What a humble and gifted talent!
What a blessing to have been young in the 70s and 80s and to have had artists like these making the soundtrack to your life.
I was so touched with this whole video, especially about how Michael fricken Macdonald was prone to forget lyrics. I toured Cananda in the early 80s for six months, and as a drummer, having to ask, at least 2 or 3 times a night, how a song started, was humiliating.
I can look back now and not feel so alone.
Kenny also did a great duet with Steve Perry called “ Don’t Fight It”.

McDonald's "I Can Let Go Now" was used in the finale to China Beach. After avoiding it, the Nam vets decide to take a roadtrip to DC to visit the Vietnam Memorial Wall. It closed out their stories and gave the cast an opportunity to honor the people they portrayed. The show was based on accounts of nurses that served in Vietnam.
McDonald's song and The Eagles "Try To Love Again" made for a powerful fairwell at the Wall.

That generation sure learned thier lesson. When it was thier turn they eliminated the draft making sure only poor kids died and they could keep it going forever.
That was so thoughtful of them.
When I was 11 y/o, had a cousin that worked at an AM/FM station in Salt Lake City. For Christmas, he gave us a huge box of demo copies of 45's and albums. I was digging through and saw the Doobie Brothers debut album. It was like finding gold. Just a month before, Kenny Loggins released his album with Jim Messina sittin in. Same Old Wine to me, one of the best songs ever produced. Little did I know that following these two groups would lead to the world of Steely Dan and the ultimate collision of talent witnessed above. The orbit of those three groups of artists has brought so much enjoyment to a myriad of fans over the years. Thank God for rock-n-roll.

Michael forgetting lyrics and mumbling is still better sounding than most singers.
I love both these gentlemen!! What a juxtaposition in onstage personalities though! Michael is a laid back, unbelievably humble, grateful, family man kind of guy; whereas Kenny was shot out of a cannon- a cocky guy with all the swagger to put it out there! Married naked, seldom buttoned up a shirt, dissed Jimmy Messina because he believed he was so much better (even though he was the actual grasshopper in the duo), belted out every bit of energy he ever had, and I loved every ounce of that attitude ('cept for dissing Jimmy; he's a master of his craft)!! When these two got together- McDonald and Loggins, I knew their talents were gonna hit the fan and blow up the music world. Sure enough- back-to-back Grammys!! I loved both their unique voices, their individual styles, their amazing instrumental talents, and their ability to work with so many other artists. Michael looked at it as "Oh, the Doobie Brothers allowed me to sneak onstage with them." and Kenny looked at it as "I blew away XXX's fans with my abilities!!" Kenny, in private, is a very giving, heartful man though- giving personal time, boatloads of cash, and so much care to his longtime community of Santa Barbara! It seems out of character for the cocky guy we see on stage, but that's truly him all the way. The music world has been gifted by their presence and their willingness to write, play, and still perform at their ages!! They're amazing and I love them both!!

Michael McDonald is a legend.
One of the best concerts I have ever seen was Micheal McDonald as the opener doing some of his solo career tunes mixed with some Doobie Brother hits followed by Steely Dan doing some of their early hits and then they brought Micheal back on stage to do the entire Aka album. After driving home I grabbed my Aja album and read the cover notes and was so surprised to see Micheal listed on so many of those songs as the background vocalist. All of those decades listening to those songs and I never knew.
Michael’s echo is all over everything. Love yacht rock.

When they all were coming up rock musicians in their 70s and 80s were rare at best…these great musicians were the absolute pioneers! They reset the landscape with a whole new style of music, now the trail has been blazed for many others to have longer careers…
So does that just prove that McD and Kenny Loggins are incapable of writing a bad song? There may be more truth to that than humor.
They're both genuinely nice people, and hearing McD talk about what an honor it is to have been able to make music with certain people - but the truth is that a LOT of the music we loved wouldn't have been remarkable without his voice. The same goes for Kenny Loggins, and it's amazing to hear the vocal range he still has.
I couldn't help smiling to see that Michael McDonald's interview was done in his garage. Not a fully dressed-out studio in a garage, but just a regular garage in a regular house. Garage door tracks on the ceiling, etc. With all he has accomplished, he has retained the art of being human. Great video, Professor... thanks once again.
I love how Michael McDonald speaks about how the most wonderful experiences he had was working with people like Loggins and Bacharach. Undoubtedly there are many that will say the same about working with him. Both Loggins and McDonald have written and performed so many songs that are both the figurative and literal soundtracks to several decades of the 20th Century.
For over 45 years they have kept up with it.

For Michael to admit forgetting lyrics is something special. There are so many artists that won't admit they have. Also to be rocking on stage well into their 60's and 70's now people will understand when I say one of my favorite singles A touch of Grey by The Grateful Dead is tops on my list. I just saw Kenny Loggins (and Jim Messina) at the Hollywood Bowl last September, and he put on an incredible concert. I am so glad I got up see him.
The late David Bowie once confessed in an interview he in the later years of his life that he now needed to keep a book of his lyrics on stage to help him remember the songs he was singing. He wasn't afraid to admit that he wasn't always able to remember all the lyrics to all his popular songs.
Well, he's been a part of so many great songs, trying to catalog all of them, and instantly pull them up has got to be difficult. It's like having a huge family and trying to remember all of your relatives, some of whom you may have met only once.

When I was in college, Thunder Island was on the radio a lot. My girlfriend's family lived on the shore of Lake Michigan, and in order to have some alone time, we'd take the boat out to a little island called Seagull Island. We called it Thunder Island after the song because, away from the prying eyes of her family, we could make love. It truly was a thunder island to us!

Two of the best artists of the '70s. I just got to see Loggins Live at the Hollywood Bowl last September. He put on an amazing concert, the first half of which was with Jim Messina. Loggins told this story about his dad's surgery inspiring that song that night. Love hearing the stories behind their music. Michael's humility is so endearing and heartwarming. LOVE the shout out to Live at Daryl's House! Thanks for another great episode Adam.

Michael McDonald is grateful that he's still performing, and so are we. As long as we have breath to sing, we should.
He once said that he was "too senile" to write his own songs around the time he was covering all the Motown hit songs. I felt that was a blunder and I couldn't stand most of the cover songs. He later came out with another album of his own material. The title escapes me now. I think he may have written the material for that one, however.
So glad we can still appreciate Michael McDonald while he is around to know how much he is appreciated. Thanks for the chance to hear him speak with so much genuine emotion about a musical life well spent. ❤
Im 76 years old now and can't remember the exact year ..(70's), , but heard a radio spot where they commended Kenny and Michael for recording 30% of the top songs for the year. I loved it and believed it.
I love Kenny Loggins. His voice is great. But Michael McDonald has always seemed like another species. Not outrageous range like Steve Perry or others. Just a tone and manner of singing that seems magical. I'm more surprised you got to interview him than anyone. I don't think I've ever seen him interviewed before. (Maybe just bad luck.) He's a great "get"!

Two of my absolute favorite performers. And I luv that they teamed up several times over the years. One other song, that most of you guys probably haven't heard, is called "She's Dangerous" and it was on on Kenny's 1988 album. Great fast tempo, soulful, Pop tune with Loggins & McDonald trading lead vocals. Definitely worth checking out as is the rest of the album.

I also have to comment on how humble Michael McDonald is. One of the greatest voices of the 70's and still sounds great, and worried about things like remembering the words, and surprised he's still going on stage. Amazing. He does not realize that he could sing the Alphabet song and people would line up to hear it.

These 2 were THE artists of singer/songwriters of the 70s and 80s of popular music. You could count on anything they did turning to gold. I love we Michael said "no, you have to let the song want it wants to be" maybe that's the key let the song decide what it wants to be and they were both fantastic at that. What a great episode getting the story from both of these legends on their collaboration on This is It. Both these artists are America treasures. Great work

Each time you heard one of Kenny’s or Michael’s songs on the radio, you would know right away it was one or both of them singing. It’s okay if you mess up on a part of the song, it adds to the charm and boosts that nostalgia factor.

I absolutely LOVE Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins collaborations, McDonald has to be one of the smoothest voices ever- Kenny hits high stuff and can really get things fired up. I love this duo because of the way their sounds complement one another in about as perfect a symbiotic sonic relationship as could be imagined. The result is nothing short of phenomenal, IMO. Awesome that Kenny did that bit live with you- I truly enjoyed the fact that that was yours... and we were treated to more than the customary 3-second norm due to the copyright stuff. PERFECT piece for a Monday morning, and what a way to begin the week- Thank you very much Adam, my day just got a lil' pep put in its step and I'm now wearin' a REAL smile☺. It REALLY is the simple things in life, like hearing a certain song or two at just that right time, that often make the difference between a ho-hum day and a great day!

There could not have been a more perfect pair than these two.
I used the groove on loop for my first radio demo tape. Most people my age couldn't gauge the song but I knew what was up. These two men came up with a HOT and moving song that continues to touch generations. Bless them and their talents. Great cross interview. /d

I will be honest with you Professor ... this is literally the first RUclips video I've watched I wished were longer. Two of my favorite singer/songwriters with incredible albums and collaborations between them,.
I heard a story about this song years ago. Not about its creation, but about how it was used once. Years ago, when the 49ers were in the 1981 NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys, the score was 17-14 (Dallas) at the half. (I THINK this was the game but don't quote me). They were in the locker room at halftime, and after Coach Bill Walsh had given his motivational speech & strategy for the 2nd half, Dwight Clark (#87 Wide Receiver) felt they needed a pick me up - something a little more to put them over the top. He put this song on. And when you think about it, it's perfect! This was it - their chance to make their own history. They were going no further, as the song says. Their backs to the corner. They went back out on the field and won the game, thanks in part to that extra push the song gave them, and, in no small way, "The Catch" made by Dwight Clark in the 4th quarter. I was there, and I'll never forget it! Thankfully, they did go further - to the Superbowl and they won! (BTW - I don't wear glasses, but if I ever do, I'll check out Zenni, just for you Professor!)
What an unforgettable combination. It's the "Springtime for Hitler" effect, in that their intended "crappy" song became a hit!

A great movie! The Hitler Musical was hilarious! Dick Shawn didn’t have that big of a movie career, but was hilarious!!! In everything he did!
Is there any 70s or 80s song that didn't have Loggins or McDonald involved in it somehow? They did the background vocals, or sang a duet with just about everyone. They truly had the Midas touch back then. Both had unmistakable, magical vocal capabilities. They are the soundtrack of my childhood and teen years. Eddie Money gets an honorable mention for: if you listen hard, he is singing in the background, just as he did for Loggins' song I'm Alright, among others. I miss good music.

Yes, I remember this song was huge when it came out. My wife loves listening to Yacht Rock so I still hear this song quite often.

I don't know why, but I really hate the term Yacht Rock. It's just good music that I grew up listening to. I don't know how it's different to soft rock or pop? These were literally just the songs that played on the radio when I was a little girl. It was AM/FM pop music. How did it become associated with yachts? Honestly, people who owned yachts listened to Hall & Oates, too, yet they aren't classified as Yacht Rock. I just don't get it. I am only 50, but it makes me feel old to hear people call it something other than just 70s and 80s pop music. Worse still, when did it become classic rock? And when did Ozzy become an actor? I hate time. Make it stop. Bring back... my childhood, please.

Kenny Loggins has done fund raisers with Alan Parsons before. They had a 2018 concert together with a list of others. Alan Parsons would be a good one to cover he worked with so many people and groups and has some great music.

If you don't mind me making a suggestion, could you please consider devoting an episode to Arthur Brown, aka "The God of Hellfire"? He had a huge international hit in 1968 called "Fire" and has continued to release great music ever since. He has been a major influence on a variety of artists, including Alice Cooper, Kiss, Iron Maiden, and even Peter Gabriel and George Clinton! His life is so very fascinating. He's also a really cool guy and would make for a fantastic interview subject. I'm a huge fan of his and would love to see an episode with him.

That was another great interview. I am also a singer and performer, and I have had that issue many times where the lyrics just don't come to you on stage. It made me feel much better about it knowing a player of his caliber has the same issue. Much respect to both of them!
There's a story of the San Francisco 49ers before Super Bowl XVI. Joe Montana played the song in a boom box during the team bus trip to the stadium and inside the locker room. Even the head coach Bill Walsh asked him to turn up the volumen so everyone could hear it. There was no pre-game speach. They had enough with the song. Great track for sure. Another great Video. That's a great story. The 49ers definitely had good taste in music. They also showed up during Huey Lewis' 1986 concert video in San Fran (it's here on YT). You can see them on the songs "Hip to be Square" & "I Know What I Like".

My daughter just got a bunch of Zenni Eyewear and she LOVES them so much she does not want lasik. They are high value and fun. I got her 10 pairs!! Sunglasses to regular stylish. We changed to WALMART eye to get prescription because the family optometrist was giving us a hard time. Thank you for the music and we telling us about Zenni. They are the best!
