- Episode #290 : Season 9 : The South Pacific
Hello Friends,
On this episode I depart Savusavu at midnight and make way for the former leper colony island of Makogai Island. Makogai is now under the care of the Marine Fisheries department and is where they grow all of the coral for the Fijian Islands as well as growing the endangered Giant Clams. They also use the facilities as a nursery for sea turtles when they are hatching.
I have an amazing visit with the only two occupants of island, Pau and Mary. Heard about there life there and got a tour of the grounds.

You deserve a million subs my friend. Such great content. You are doing exactly what most of the rest of us would love to do. Thank you so much for bringing us land lovers along with you
Thank you 🙏🏻
I'd recommend this film to all sailing channels.
YOU are the reason you had the “key” to the island. Thank you for taking us along with you and your adventures
You are a class act. The chief was a proud and humble guy and you treated him with the respect he deserved. In return he opened up his house and village and the island and the sea to you to enjoy. I can't see how any visitors could refuse to show the respect he deserves. Your actions went a long ways to hopefully remove some of the ill feelings brought about unfortunately by crude and inconsiderate past sailors. Hopefully future sailors to this beautiful island and it's beautiful people will watch your video and learn about respect and dignity toward these beautiful Islanders
I have come back almost a week later just to say, "yes indeed, that song was stuck in my head for like a week!"
😂😂😂
Thank you for the beautiful energy you conjure. When I tune in to these videos I can feel the soft, bright energy filling up my room. Your energy is bright. Thank you for sharing all that you do. You're helping to lift us all up.
Thank you for this sweet comment 🙏🏻
So easy to be respectful as you are. Thank you James.
Kava's interesting. It's like an extreme calmness. The opposite of anxiety.
My favorite video so far. These people are happier than most Americans with all of our toys and fancy stuff. Sometimes less, is more. Safe travels.
Fijians are awesome people, they make you feel your home !
I like the way you respect people and traditions
Brilliant! No matter what ever you do next in your life you have followed your dreams! May you compleat many more.
How wonderful to be part of their family and community - wonderful tradition - respect..
WOW What an ancient and beautiful place
Getting very close to 100k subscribers, man! You deserve it.
My god the amount of peace you find !
Good evening, a good program that gives you wellness
With complicated and confusing messages currently infiltrating technology, politics and larger metropolitan areas, your videos are a refreshing and deeply needed reminder of a clearer/less complicated way of life/back to basics. Thank you for infusing a relaxing, peaceful way of life for those of us immersed in the rat race. I’m so grateful for your channel. “Life is most skillfully lived when one sails a boat rather than rowing it.” ~Alan Watts
Amazing comment, thank you 🙏🏻
You seem to have a knack for this. I watch a number of sailing channels and yours is moving up in the ranks. I usually don't care for music in sailing videos, but you're able to mix it in at the right amount and the right type of music so that it works. Right now, I'm thinking @10:00 when the dolphins joined you. Well done and thanks for posting.
Incredible experience. Thanks for highlighting and respecting the leper cemetery- those poor people lived and died isolated and alone.
Respectful and humbling, great film James 👍🥰
This video is one of my favorites
Nice to see an American with some polite manners, 👍😊 sorry to say...
Awesome channel by the way👍
Great inspiration. I take the trip when the kids have flown from the house👍😊
Very enjoyable, I dove around Giant Clams in Palau, beautiful
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" : thank's for having understood that and showing us how to behave on a journey. The village chief is very committed to his duty and welcoming the decent visitors. This "long format" episode elapsed peacefully and I was even surprised when it ended. 100k suscribers is a well deserved milestone. 👋
Great explanation on Savusavu and the cava ceremony
Been watching for a while. This is one of my favorite videos. So very intimate. Thank you
you sailors are all alike - the land is calling you - the seas are calling you - make up your mind...love it JAMES - thank you for sharing !
It’s called traveling
Yeah they all buy a boat then park next to land somewhere. 🤷🏼♂️😊
Hello! ... good footage and content. I don't know if if you are interested but the tree right behind you at 7min time is " Pana " ,"Bread fruit" ... Ask the locals. Is very filling like potatoes. You peal it and boil. Serve with fish and virgin oil and you got yourself a Titan meal. Is very healthy. Top that with fresh coconut water on the side and that's what I used to love about my joung years 18* north.
Good luck!
Yeah man. Thanks for the ride.
James thank you for sharing this incredible island. What an amazing place. And how moving it is to see that wonderful man to have brought you into his community. It just makes you pause and think..they dont have have many modern conveniences and things we Americans and many rich nations have and they just opened their home and hearts to you without any questions asked. It just makes me think how much we've lost our way as a nation that should open their arms. All these modern views, politics and drive through way of life -It's shaped us to be cynical and guarded. The leper cemetery. THAT was incredible! I could spend weeks just trying to manicure it, clean, and fix all of those crosses and tombs. Very moving footage today. Thank you! 🥰🥰
It was a really incredible experience I will carry with me for all of my days ❤️
@@SailorJames Def moving!
Beautiful, what a simpler way of life.
Well done It was like being there. Looking forward for the next one. Pura Vida from Costa Rica.

Loving all the new videos my dude, best sailing channel on screwtube hands down.
100K wisitors best wish from Iceland
What a beautiful place. I’d never want to leave.😊
Hi James
If you’re still in Fiji, try to catch a game of rugby. You won’t be disappointed! Love the channel btw
James I’m sorry I can’t offer more but I give with absolute sincerity. I’m down to 3 boats I think I can not just afford but put the work into the next few years before I set sail. I’m ready to retire and make my dream come true and you (whom I discovered in a saling magazine, not YT), have inspired me beyond my own inspiration. Safe travels and all the success
Many thanks for taking us on your fantastic journey James - and kudos for your respect and appreciation of the locals traditions 🙂👍
What a cool episode! Love how you approached everything with the utmost respect. Il never get to this place in my own life, so I really appreciate you sharing the adventures with us! Thank you!!!
Thanks 🙏🏻

Truly a Sailor. God speed and fair skies and calm seas my brother.
This was an awesome experience! Thanks for sharing it
Beautiful place. I was lucky to visit there about 15 years ago as part of a dive trip.
Thanks to Paul (I didn't catch his partner's name) for taking the time to speak with you. What a spot to anchor! As much as you're not entitled to exclusivity on a bay, it must be so cool to have one from time to time. Cheers, James.
Absolutely loved that episode. Shows how respecting others cultures can take you a long way. You definitely stumbled upon a decent guy there. He was very proud of the work he is doing and gladly gave you a guided tour :)
Thank you
Best channel on RUclips. Thank you brother for taking us around the world and respecting all cultures
Amazing episode, I enjoyed watching it. As always good job James
So cool, James - thank you for sharing.👍
Awesome video James, thanks so much for sharing.
Wow, what an experience
100 k soon, harpoon, nice one Captain James and Tritea :) & thanks !
That was awesome, I would have a hard time leaving a place like that. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent.
Awww, what a pretty place ! 🌴It took me awhile to find that sevu-sevu & what it was- they grind it down & make a tea thats Kava & sposed to give you a "feeling of well being" Thinking of ordering some from Fiji, its not that much. They are really doing good things for the clams. Wonder if youll look @ them diff now when you dive.I wouldve kept one of those pretty shells, but boats fill up fast w/stuff. I love those trails to the cemetery. Do you know that leprosy wasn't real contagious, it took a lot of skin contact over time to get it but it looked so bad people were afraid & didnt want to see them either. Just reg people shunned. I would make a bad sea travler, I would always want to stay. Glad you asked about the trees, I knew they were bananas, never tried plantains. What a great tour. That view looking back omg- just SO gorgeous Thank you ! 💙🏝
Macho macho man….. la la la 😊
Congrats on 100k. You deserve it.
One word, amazing. Congrats on 100k!!!
Hey, you have a good voice! You were right on key!
Almost 100 thousand. im so happy for you!
Thanks again for the great videos and info. I especially like how you give latitude & longitude of your location, also info on checking out & in & cost. You make your videos about sailing, the people, the destinations rather than about yourself as most sailing channels highlight themselves. James, by doing that, you stand out above the rest as the best on youtube.
I share the costs of clearing in on this video Getting Cleared into Savusavu in Fiji and Exploring Nakama Creek by Dinghy

Makes me smile seeing how much respect you have for the land and the people ❤❤ thank you
Do you add anything to your water to ensure no bacteria develop?
Has your hull ever been painted with ant biocide paint, if so did you scrape it all off?
Has love been found on your majestic journey?
Wonderful Video James, man you've been to some spectacular places, bet this place was mind blowing. You are such a respectful and considerate person to recognise their culture and traditions like you did. Anyhow really enjoyed this amazing film, thank you. Stay safe
Very nice human being fits well into the Fijian Community
It’s amazing you started in Marina del Rey and your all the way in Fiji 🇫🇯, an epic journey bro 😎.
It’s wild as hell, a long wet road 😂
great stuff - keep on doing this. EPic and well done to your home team as well
Terrific content and wonderful community…thank you for allowing me to join the journey!
BUCKSOME James. Thats the word I use for COOL.

Wish i could’ve liked this video twice. What a magical experience. ❤
The most beautiful cemetery I’ve ever seen.
Hi James. New (ish) to the channel. Currently reading your book. Very enjoyable, as is your channel. (Hamilton , Ontario).
Thanks for picking up a copy of the book 🙏🏻 glad to hear you are enjoying the adventures!
Way cool! Makes me wanna sail in the future no doubt. Fair winds. (if that is proper to say lol)
Nice episode!
What an incredible experience. I love your videos.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Amazing video mate. That was so friendly and happy meeting Carl, and then poignant when visiting the graveyard. You are living the life man.
Great video!!
Congrats on 100k man! Been here since you left LA, good work :)
My parents just returned from a dive trip in Fiji. They absolutely loved it and are already planning their return trip. It is beautiful and love learning about different cultures through your travels.
Fiji is the most amazing place I visited in the South Pacific!!!!
Absolutely incredible. We are privileged to have access to your content. Thank you, James! 😎👍
Negative stress levels there James.
Brilliant.
You were lucky to find Anchorage there at the leper island, the place was packed! Lol😅
You viewers give James a thumbs up on his video. He's working hard for you out there.
I'm stoked for your impending 100k subs! Started watching around 17k
It’s insane 😂 but I am stoked
Good attitude James, when in Rome.
Maybe a mic thing but sounds to me when you were at no load idle you need to check the valve lash on that engine.
Edit to add: I assume it was not 30 F degrees there.
Becoming my favorite channel. Very good content. I wondered how one went about presenting kava to a village.
Thanks 🙏🏻
One of my favorite episodes and I like them all. 🙏🌎⛵️
First rate content. Always wanted to sail the South Pacific and love seeing you do it. Truly inspiring.
Love the enter action with the locals awesome keep up good work
Living the dream my friend…..from a rainy england 👍👍
My pitty is so much a part of my life I have often wondered why you don't have a dog. I am very impressed you have done so well on this journey, especially with the hard way it started. Way to go man.
Traveling by boat with pets is a major hassle and many counties forbid the animals from leaving the boat or force them into quarantine, which I think is very cruel for the animals and would be selfish of me to subject them to.
@@SailorJames right on.
Another great episode James, thank you for teaching us again!!!
