A good way to think about the "straight up": your forward momentum is trying to go through the ramp and your legs are trying to throw you away from the wall (because that's what you push off). Do it at the right time and the two cancel out, you essentially come to a dead stop: not going forward or backward. What's left is the upward part of your jump and the upward thrust of the ramp. You're never *above* the coping, you're *higher* than the coping and above the transition, at the point you left the ground.

JB, you're a great teacher, and Layton (I think I heard his name right) is an excellent student. I've tried these ollies to fakie on a miniramp, but couldn't figure out the timing. I did a lot of those manuals-at-the-coping when learning rock to fakie, so hopefully I can transfer that feel right into these ollies. I also appreciated Layton's insight about the difference in knee movement's from a flatground ollie.
