Wow unbelievable I had 2 of those common issues with basically the same generation TOYOTA Matrix. My starter went bad at 120,000 miles and certainly my my left side strut mount has that clunky noise. You guys really know your stuff. 👌 Thanks God a came across your videos. Keep up the good work
Strut mounts maybe that's it!!!! THANK YOU. I FIX THE WHOLE AXLE I HAD A GOOD MECHANIC SAY HE TIGHTENED EVERYTHING. THE ALIGNMENT WAS GOOD AND THAT'S ALL IT WAS. I was going insane with this car
I have this model of Corolla, driven it since 2012 and the performance is still great. However, the air conditioner's compressor (with sensor) is a major problem I have with the vehicle.
My 2013 Corolla had the gas cap issue check engine light at around 165k. Replaced gas cap and problem solved. Also, I had to replace the alternator around 155k. Did that myself for around $250. I purchased my Corolla new. Never had any other issues. Keep in mind, most of these cars come with cheap batteries, brakes, and tires. Replace them with good parts and they will last much longer.
Thanks for your comment, my alternator gave up this week at 90K. I did it myself too, it’s part of the maintenance, 9 yo alternator you can’t ask for more right ?
I have a 2009 Corolla S that I got brand new. The only problems I have had was the evap. issue and the blend door cable broke about two years after I bought it. Luckily it was covered under warranty. It has been an amazing car always there for you. I will always keep her forever.
I have 2009 Corolla and since 2017 and it runs like anything, never had major problem in it. I take care of her as my family member and in reverse she takes food care of me. Super trooper car, never stuck in snowfall. I love my car life anything.
Myself, mom and dad all have 12 year old 2009 Corollas. The shocks will leak far before the strut mounts go. I’m also a tech and have never seen a corolla with a loose ball joint. Ever. It’s uncanny. The water pump bearing failure/noise and axles/axle boots are the other problems we’ve run into all around the 250k km mark.
I bought my 2010 Corolla in 2009 , had 3 miles on it . For a few years it ate oxygen sensors like candy bars , and every two years it would blow the high beams . Two years ago I had to replace the water pump , and two years ago a deer ran into the driver side of the car ( took 5 months to get two new doors and front quarter panel) . Love my car , but just today it makes a groaning sound when I get up to 45 mph . My car has 220,650 miles on it .
175000 '11 Toyota Corolla LE automatic, no issues whatsoever. The only serious problem I had was the alternator dying at around 100,000 miles, otherwise, it's still going. DD and this car will definitely keep on rolling. Sad to see it go though, getting a Tacoma to replace the Corolla :(
I just got a ‘12 Corolla S with 90K prev owner was seemingly young and used it like a race car apparently. The engine runs a bit rough, other than that. I changed the transmission fluid as it was very dark. This week I had to replace the alternator too. We’ll see how that goes.
I have to throw my 2 cents in, having owned multiple Corollas in this year range. Intake Can Phaser loss of oil pressure. Toyota issued a TSB for this and it is a MAJOR part to replace involving removal of the timing chain. 1000$+ job. All 10th gens I've driven have had the Phaser grind on cold start-ups.
Looking at getting one of these for a daily driver looks like there all easy fixes, these videos are extremely helpful when buying a car thanks guys! 👍🏻
I have a fleet of Corollas. All bought brand new and passed down when a new one is bought. 2023 Corolla Cross, 2013 Corolla S, 2010 Corolla S and 2007 Corolla CE. Other than changing the oil religiously and stuff like brakes(regular wear items) no issues. To me they are the most reliable and cheap cars to keep on the road.
THIS VIDEO IS VERY VERY INFORMATIVE IN KNOWING THE PROBLEMS THAT ONE SHOULD EXPECT WHEN BUYING OR HAVING A 2010 TOYOTA COROLLA. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO.
I am quite surprised you did not mention the well known issue with the 2-Zr-Fe engines found in this generation; namely, the VVTi gear seizing on cold start resulting in rattle.
Interesting set of observed common failures. Another Toyota channel out there has as his 5: water pump, alternator, vvt intake gear, timing tensioner gasket (oil leak), and axle boots; none of which you have on your list. Just bought an 09 made in March 2008 (Matrix) and I'm hoping to have a long relationship with this beast. Thanks for your input.
I just bought one today.. It was 2009 Corolla LE with 63k miles For $7.1k …. Need advice… was it a good deal? Drives smooth.. got new tires and TPMS sensors costed $800
So funny I haven’t had any of those issues on my 2010 with 242k. Only repairs I’ve ever done were a wheel speed sensor, the timing chain tensioner gasket (oil leak), and changing out the radio because the factory one would go on the Frits sometimes. Amazing car
Hi! Have you dealt with massive loss of throttle after check engine and TRC lights come on? Only able to fix it by disconnecting the battery. Toyota did a full (and I mean complete) diagnosis and found no fault at all, yet its happened 6 times already, without any warning. Thank you.
One more thing for anybody in a hot state, The trim along the bottom of the door windows breaks apart quickly. Letting water into the door assembly. Very hard to find one of those generation Corolla’s with that trim in good condition in the junkyards in places like FL
Yeah I'm in Maryland and bought a 2010 recently. Of course 2 weeks after purchasing the trim just fell apart and looks like garbage. I assume the dealership glued it or something so nobody noticed. That's the only thing I don't like
I’ve had my 2010 since I bought it. After 135,000 miles I’m on my third set of tires and second set of front brakes. Other than that I’ve only had to replace the alternator. It’s due to be replaced but I think I can easily get another 50,000 more trouble free miles out of it.
I work at a "big box" store. 3 of my coworkers have Corollas in this year range. Zero issues according to them. Now if you have a car that's been damaged, or you haven't taken care of it, well that's a different story, but that's pretty much any car...
The VVT-i gear on these models also has a known issue, there was a Technical Bulletin released. Basically the locking pin fails and so on a cold start when there's no oil pressure, the VVT will rattle and cause irregular valve timing. Sounds like a really rough cold start, but fine when driving/starting warm. If not taken care of will eventually rattle itself to death, potentially blowing the engine. Can be fixed without dropping the engine, but is still a quite involved, expensive fix. If doing it, you might as well look at replacing the timing chain and guides, and potentially the water pump too.
I have one of these Corollas and it has lived up to its reputation. It hasn't had any problems, it's efficient, and reasonably comfortable for everyday driving. If that's what your looking for, this is good choice. I think it could easily go 200000 miles with regular oil changes. It handles alright but if you want something sporty, exciting or luxurious, then you'll have to choose something else.
You better add the VVT cam gear assemblies, many have had to replace do to a loud rattle of death on a cold engine start. $1200 dollar if dealer repairs.
Wow. I'm thinking about buying one of these. Such minor issues. The last car i got one of the top 3 issues was "engine may sludge and die at 85k and you'll need a new engine or a prayer". This is like "your exhaust will break, but it won't do anything but throw a code".
2011 Corolla, already had to loctite window regulator bolts, replace door lock actuators and the WORST problem not mentioned is phaser gear rattle on startup- that is a HUGE problem with 2009 to 2013 toyotas ( and even some american cars). Cheap fix for me was increasing the viscosity of the oil, it helped prevent it from leaking out of the phaser gear unless it was really hot out ( 80 degrees or more).
Very common on the 09-10s. I would use thicker oil all the time to lessen this issue (not complete fix) but I live in the mid-Atlantic, it gets to cold in the winter. I do use thicker (10-30) in the summer and it DOES help the oil from draining out the top of the cam gear phasers. Though I’ve read for people the noise began around 40k-60k now at 220k still does it every start up and no issues, yes it sounds horrible but it seems to be just a noise you’ll have to learn to live with.
@@emmanuel3981 It’s colder than normal now where I live so I’m using 0-20. I switched to the factory oil filter from Toyota and the rattle isn’t as often at start up, duration and noise level decreased as well. The theory is that the Toyota filters do not have plastic or metal caps on the ends like other oil filter brands like Purolator, Mobil 1 have on them. Just get it if you haven’t already they’re great cars.
I bought a 2010 Toyota Corolla brand new an I put 223,000 miles on it an never gave me any problems two deer took care of it for me or I would still be driving it. So I bought another one an I really like this one also. Only problem I have with this one is my radio don't work. An that sucks
The only issue I've run into is ignition coils going out, a slight oil leak from chain tensioner gasket on the back of the engine and one that I have not been able to fix that is my idol jumps around a little while the ac is on (jumps around between 600 to 1000 rpm)
The water pump and alternator should be up on this list ! With the starter going bad had all three replaced early in it's life for a Toyota. Would expect this from an American made car, but sorely disappointed in a Toyota product and Denso for these failures. After all this is why we pay premium prices to purchase Toyota products.
Thanks for ur explanation I will like to you my Toyota Corolla 2010 is doing overheating and I will like to knw the reason why ? The temperature is always high up and down
Has anyone had any intermittent long cranks? Mostly during warm weather? Any idea? I have a 2012 100k miles and I’m trying to figure out why that happens I just bought it and didn’t notice this issue until it got warm. Car starts regardless and runs fine it’s just sometimes those weird long cranks at times… not always.
In the US there was a recall on that . My 2009 Corolla moves side to side just slightly in the lane . I was told by my local dealer I did not get there in time for the recall . I did not push the issue .
I love the comment thread. Truly great cars. 2016 from new with over 229K miles. VW fanbois will try to slam our 'Rollas for being "boring", "not being THAT reliable", or that fifty years of owner stories and data is "anecdotal", but as real people paying for their own things, we know the truth about our cars and their utter superiority.
Bought a 2010 Corolla S with 95,000 just did transmission service ...it was filthy filter was black. Looks like it and fluid was never changed but it shifts so smooth. Everyone! Replace your trans fluid and filter right away! Never do a flush
My wife complained that her 2012 Carolla has a delay when starts up n drive in the transmission. It seems like it races then gets back to normal .what are the possible causes for such behavior. Awaiting a reply thank you
Corrosion ... both front fenders get gunk trapped behind them near the wheel well behind those foam backing pieces... stuff sits there and holds moisture, eventually mine rotted out from the inside out...also make sure your doors drain correctly and hit them with some kind of rust proofing.... I've seen many doors that rust from the inside out where the seam seals are.... i have a 2009 corrolla 150k km on it, but it's getting close to the end due to corrosion
I have 2012 corolla 1.8 and the problems I have is it shakes when I brake. It makes a clicking noise when i make a u turn. It just started making a rattle noise where the pulleys are however the pulleys are intact and not the ones making the noise. Can you diagnose that just by my explanations?
Shaking when braking may be warped front disc rotors or worn rear brake drums. If they aren't too worn, the rotors or drums can be machined for smoothness. If they are too worn, they can be replaced. The clicking noise when turning, is likely a worn CV joint. This can be fixed with by replacing with a new CV axle. I recommend replacing both sides and choosing an original Toyota or high quality replacement part. Lower quality ones don't last and lead to other problems like vibrations. None of these parts is too expensive, but there is some labor cost involved. I'm not sure about the pulley noise. You may want to start with a simple visual check that your accessory belt is not frayed or cracked and has good tension. As someone else suggested it might be a water pump. Or it could be a worn pulley bearing.
Well basically if your car shaking when u brake that means you need to change your rotors and if it does makes noises you brake pads needs to be replaced Don’t freak out very small problem and low cost!
Interesting. I have a 2009 with 250k and haven't had these issues....yet. I have replaced the water pump and I understand that is pretty common. Also being an 09 it burns oil, a quart or so every 3000 miles so not so bad. The PCV valve is under the intake manifold so that is a way more work to replace than it should be. Otherwise a great car.
@@dbdnrbdb I'm not the person you originally directed the message to, but I have an '09 1.8 L and I had to replace my water pump (and serpentine belt) at a little over 100k miles. So, seems to be a common issue with the 1.8 L engines.
2011 had the water pump issue too. 180k miles right now and at 165k had to replace alternator. Could probably replace a lot of suspension components but the ride doesn’t bother me.
I had my alternator die at 60k miles and I feel excessive engine vibration in the car when stop at a red light. I changed the throttle body and the spark plugs, still has this issue. It happens when the car is idling at around 600 rpm. Not sure what the issue is, no codes pop up, Even my mechanic doesn't know what the issue is. The weird part is when I turn on the headlights it goes away.
Yo mine does the same not sure what it could be I get to a stop it shakes a bit then goes back to normal and I noticed it happens Also when you are still and you turn the steering wheel slowly
I have 1998 Corolla Stock condition. 215k KM . Run like a clock without any problem. Fuel consumption is really amazing. NO Rust no dent. I think old vehicle are more solid and durable. Compare to new....
The 09-13 Corolla XRS has the 2AZ-FE 2.4L engine the the problems are different on the XRS models. The most common issue is the valve cover gasket leaking oil onto the block and the oil consumption gets worse overtime as the milage or Kilometers increase. They're really bad on the 07-09 Camry's it was a recall issue due to bad piston rings.

09 Corolla S, 210k miles, just did a water pump, changed it myself was easier than I thought it would be, very solid car

Unless there is a design flaw with the associated systems, batteries, brakes and tires should last reasonably long.
2010 Corolla with 207,000 miles. Regular maintenance and no issues. Bought this car used in 2012 with 34,000 miles. Such a great car!
I have a 2009 Corolla S that I got brand new. The only problems I have had was the evap. issue and the blend door cable broke about two years after I bought it. Luckily it was covered under warranty. It has been an amazing car always there for you. I will always keep her forever.
I've replaced the gas cap and tightened a window bolt on its hatchback sister the Matrix... 17 years later and still running good
I have 2009 Corolla and since 2017 and it runs like anything, never had major problem in it.
2010 Corolla S
No problems at all
Good cost efficient commuter
High gas mileage, no repairs
Made in Canada

83K for $8000 2010 Corolla SE, is this a good deal?
@@leighdiaz3359 yes I would buy it fast, if it is in decent shape.
In PA I see them for 11 and $12,000 with those kind of miles
I would say the headlights lens should be on list. They go hazy quickly.
I have corolla with 200K meters, no single issue till now
It goes very smoothly and it is a great car
They all run ruffish. If spark plugs arent black, try increasing oil viscosity
I just bought a 2010. Love it so far.
Does the Phaser grind sound like the cold VVT rattle? It doesn’t always happen on start up, but does it NEED to be replaced if it happens?
Don’t 10th gens have an oil leak issue on the tensioner near the fire wall too?
Good looking out! I been wondering what that sound was when starting the car. Makes total sense.
@@whydontyoujustsignin Walmart synthetic oil made the VVT rattle go away on dad's 2010 1.8 liter Corolla.
I have a 2007, 152 Corolla, in Australia. No stops, wasted money, problems, just smooth, reliable, plain, good motoring, including long hard trips.
THIS VIDEO IS VERY VERY INFORMATIVE IN KNOWING THE PROBLEMS THAT ONE SHOULD EXPECT WHEN BUYING OR HAVING A 2010 TOYOTA COROLLA. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO.
Corollas and Civics are notoriously the most reliable cars on the market.
So basically nothing important. 😆
I wouldn’t call a Starter not Important 🙄. Say that when you’re 50 miles away from home.
May want to add the intake cam gear. Makes a rattle noise at cold start.
I am quite surprised you did not mention the well known issue with the 2-Zr-Fe engines found in this generation; namely, the VVTi gear seizing on cold start resulting in rattle.
Thanks for the video. Title needs to be edited because in N. America the 10th Gen Corolla is 2009-2013. The 2008 Corolla is part of Gen 9.
I have a 2009 and had only one issue with the steering motor. Never had any other problems with it. Great car !

Good to see the owner of this vehicle has really maintained it! Engine looks like a tip.
Sarcasm? LOL
I just bought one today..
It was 2009 Corolla LE with 63k miles
For $7.1k ….
Thank you.
Excelent Video thanks from Dominican Republic
My starter lasted from 2013 till last week. It was the 3rd bang and start and it was still working when I replaced it.
I've had a 2010 Corolla since new only issue was starter. Other than that awesome car!
+ZINGER AVIATION MEDIA Thanks for the feedback!
Very professional and useful tips
My corolla 12, coil plug problem only till now. Wear and tear parts such break pad, tires,.. are not included. So far so good.
I have a 2010 Corolla S sitting at 123k miles with the 5 speed. got it in 2019 with 92k miles and have not had any problems.
"There's nothing wrong with this vehicle" 2 mins in I already see a valve cover covered in oil and mold on hoses
+Azaz 911c Thanks for the feedback!
You better add the VVT cam gear assemblies, many have had to replace do to a loud rattle of death on a cold engine start. $1200 dollar if dealer repairs.
That's extremely rare.
@@albertatundra more common on hondas with less then 100K miles vtc actuator
1200? You got screwed.
Cheap fix for me was increasing the viscosity of the oil, it helped prevent it from leaking out of the phaser gear unless it was really hot out ( 80 degrees or more).
thx man same 2011 i think same problem!!
How many miles does your 2011 corolla had when those problems started?
@@MattySlimz do you still have that noise on your car? I'm about to buy a 2011 corolla sport but now I'm on doubt lol
The temperature is always high up and down
I 💗 my Corolla...
Thank You. I had throttle body issues. And windows as well. Other then those minor issues. Great car all around.
Great video! Thanks!
What about the issues with the Electronic Power Steering?
Mine draws power
Was wondering the same thing. Is this still an issue? Looking at one tomorrow!
@@michaelweiss7695 sooo, how did your looking go?🤔 You know, for the corollas.
That's funny. All if your names are Mike/michael. Haha 😸

#6 electric door lock intermittent failure, it happened on my 01 corolla and now it is happening on my 13 corolla.
Toyota Corolla are still good for running cars 🚘 I have no problems with Japanese car

Good stuff, keep it up!
My wife complained that her 2012 Carolla has a delay when starts up n drive in the transmission. It seems like it races then gets back to normal .what are the possible causes for such behavior. Awaiting a reply thank you
I have had the some codes for 5 years, still running smooth lol
Sounds like brake rotors and cv axles
Water pump, cv axle and quit racing around so hard on the poor car.
Well basically if your car shaking when u brake that means you need to change your rotors and if it does makes noises you brake pads needs to be replaced
Don’t freak out very small problem and low cost!
How about the timing chain tensioner? That seems to be a common problem as well.
Same here I have a 2013. With 113000
And I have only replaced the water pump.

The weird part is when I turn on the headlights it goes away.

you said the sensor is not replaceable? correct? Or did you say "are replaceable"? Also is this the same engine and body I will find on a 1.6 G 2011?
The 09-13 Corolla XRS has the 2AZ-FE 2.4L engine the the problems are different on the XRS models. The most common issue is the valve cover gasket leaking oil onto the block and the oil consumption gets worse overtime as the milage or Kilometers increase. They're really bad on the 07-09 Camry's it was a recall issue due to bad piston rings.
My previous '09 XRS Corolla had a huge oil consumption problem.
