2002: Splinter Cell has the best visuals!
The curtain physics, dynamic shadows, dynamic lighting, tons of environment props and a lot of interactive objects (for the time).
I envy anyone would played this in 2002-2003. I only ever got playing it around 2007 maybe, at the earliest. 1st time was with completely busted shadows or course. Later I found about the .ini tweak for partially working shadows. And only in 2014 IIRC fully working shadows were restored.

I don't even think the textures are dated. I'd say the most dated thing about the game would be character models first and geometry complexity all around second. But it still looks plenty fine.
On PC we can use the HD PS3 textures that were ported to PC. And I'm sure someone would throw those textures through ESRGAN one day.

I didn't realise this until the thirteenth rewatch, but you know how Mitchell Dougherty stops at every single water fountain on the way out of the CIA building? It mentions in the intro to the next level that the reason the Georgians were able to get information was because Mitchell's OCD drove him to hoard his work on an insecure computer. It's probably his OCD that makes him stop at every water fountain as well.

    • @CarcinogenSDA
      @CarcinogenSDA  2 года назад +2

      Yeah pretty much lmao
Dougherty is a funny character because he breaks the fourth wall of game design... Specifically because most characters in stealth games have very specific routines for which you have to time them and strategize, and Dougherty is just that x1000.

Also side note I've noticed at least on my end.
The trick at 1:20:10 for some reason doesn't work for me. He dies halfway through the fall no matter where I toss him off the roof. I almost thought I had to restart the level as I already quick saved at the corner where you toss him and there's no way to get him back off the roof.
Thankfully I found a workaround. If you move Sam to that light post on the corner of the roof while carrying the body, the game just lets you walk off without dropping it. So you don't even need to position yourself to drop his body off. It will let you just walk right off with him, and thank God for it. Level took me a good 40 mins haha

@@usmanahmed8027 won't be for a while, but the PS2 version is VERY different enough to warrant its own video (for fun, even though realistically nobody will ever play that version again)

I love when you go from collective thoughts and processing to presenting, and then randomly we get "we'll just sneak up behind him and put his ass in the past." comments. It always catches me off guard but I'm getting used to it.
One of the better commentary channels, and I'm late to the show! I'm onboard now though!

Too bad there's no damage, because the strangely erotic noise that Sam makes when he applies a medpac is too satisfying.

Would you some kind of video discussion about the differences between the first 2 games? Or to judge which is better and for what reason? I would enjoy some good analysis or mechanics confrontation👀

Hah lol I just noticed another thing - I commented on the PS2 playthrough that I suspected that the PS2 version was the originally planned version - the cutscene at 1:44:00 where Wilkes Jr. dies is another example of this (in addition to some dialogue in the second embassy level that is a bit out of place) - the cutscene says "Russian airspace" - it comes right after the Kalinatek mission which is set in Virginia. In the PS2 version Wilkes doesn't die in the Kalinatek level but rather at the end of the Russian power plant which follows the Kalinatek mission. It makes a lot more sense for him to die there too as the Osprey could have easily transported him to the nearest hospital instead of "flying somewhere over Russian airspace".
The more i compare the two the more things click into place. Who knows why they cut these parts from the PC (and XBox) version, maybe it didn't fit on a CD-ROM - the PS2 uses DVDs so they'd have had a lot more storage with the trade-off of having smaller levels due to less RAM?
A quick Google search shows that the original XBox had theoretically 64MB shared RAM (meaning both for VRAM and regular RAM) whilst the PS2 had 4MB VRAM so maybe that was it?
The truth is probably the the original plan was somewhere along the lines of "having the level sizes of the PC/XBox version with the level count of the PS2 version".

Take out the cone sight in mgs and replace it with splinter cell hiding mechanics and it'll be perfect.
Hinding in mgs was too easy with those cone sight, all you had to do was stay out of that cone and you're safe.

Holy shit, I never knew that door in the training area was there. How are you supposed to know the code?
Oh, and then you explain it by saying there's another door I never knew existed. Rad. Something fun about the PC version I discovered is that you can just set Sam to a certain speed and the guards will never hear you, and it's actually a relatively high speed. The only issue is moving diagonally makes him speed up slightly and that'll alert the guards.
I don't entirely understand the police station part after the 2 extortion cops, I can get to the dark patch with the bushes, but every time I move forward I just get randomly spotted.
