jeremiah9561 I'd definitely turn adblock off if youtube didn't use suck a shit URL structure. Please order videos by channel, it would make EVERYTHING easier.
Great video. Linus games while using the can and while in the bath tub, Slick drops the Shield tablet at 5:31, and Linus likes cooking old power supplies. Sweet.
Yeah but the graphics between last gen and next gen are completely different. If you took a true next gen game that is on the Xbox One or PS4, it would not run on the Xbox 360 or PS3 because they would not be able to handle it. That's why next gen games like Watch Dogs had to be hugely downgraded to work on last gen consoles. The Shield Tablet has the performance to run games that were on the PS3 and Xbox 360 at 1080p 60fps which is still really cool because it's only a tablet. It would not be able to produce that performance with a next gen game, most likely the game wouldn't even be playable.
Tal Shterenberg Resolution doesn't actually matter with next gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. Both consoles up-convert everything to 1080p. So anything you see on either console is either native 1080p or up-scaled 1080p. There is pretty much no difference to the naked eye with native vs. up-scaled 1080p. Even Microsoft said you can't see a difference in a 50in. or smaller TV. So visually, both consoles look pretty much the same.
"Over 2.5 hours of continuous Trine 2 gaming" That's well beneath handheld consoles which range from 4-6 hours. Sure this isn't a console, but it's competing for the same time and attention.
At least it is a step in the right direction. There are a lot of features that Nvidia could have got wrong that would made the tablet a lot worse. Battery life is important, but at least Nvidia knows that they got just about everything else right so they can work on giving it a better battery life.
Chris Thirst yea, put an emulator on any android and there ya go. U can even go the extra mile and get a bluetooth controller to play the games with. In a nutshell, this thing sux. But at least they're goin in the right direction XD
***** technically Trine 2, Portal and HL aren't Android games, they are full blown PC games adapted for the tablet...and seeing as the average laptop barely lasts 2 hours while gaming, I'd say it's a decent effort.
I would go for the tablet rather than the portable. In terms of gaming on the go alone, the portable will exceed no doubt, but it's also limited in terms of practicality in other tasks because of that. I do not think that using apps or games that rely heavily on touchscreen control will be comfortable to use in the portable. The worst case scenario will be a case when an app only runs in portrait mode, meaning that the device will have to be held sideways. With the tablet on the othet hand, I not only can I enjoy gaming with its beastly performance, but do all the stuff that other Android devices can do with ease. In the end, the tablet looks like the best of both worlds and that is why it wins my vote.
Simon WoodburyForget My laptop can run Minecraft with a render distance of 40 blocks and all other settings maxed before causing massive lag. Anything over 40 blocks and there is so much lag it becomes un playable
+EpicEverythingDude75 and thats minecraft... I can do 32 (highest btw) without any lag. My $150 sempron processor can run minecraft at around 30 fps with a 16 chunk view distance
SuperSheep Then you need the i5 or the i7 because I get a smooth 57 fps. Everyone knows the key to good performance is a good processor. And the best gaming rigs use either the i5 or i7 because they scream fast. I am not saying my laptop is a gaming laptop, witch it's not, all I'm saying is my laptop is a good performer when it comes to speed. My laptop is just for everyday use but it CAN run some games as well. Oh, and my laptop came with the Intel i5 4210u processor in it and it's pretty damn quick. I even ran some stress testing and it did pretty damn well for being a 1.70GHZ processor
Hands down one of the best reviews i've seen for quite a while. Hits all the right spots. It is indeed ahead of its time. Great job nVidia for making tablets relevant to us gamers.
A 10.5 inch variant would be perfect and would buy one immediately! as I feel this product has been aimed at the place monitor /tablet on surface and play from a distance whereas the portable fixed clamshell smaller version is for strictly hand held use. Nvidia please produce a 10.5 or 12 inch variant and having a bigger screen means you could up the internal hardware and or battery!
that was dumb of him he may have scratched the non-stick coat on the grill with the ends of the power supply since it is metal . And if you eat off that grill you can get caner.
Hi. I would like you to make a more updated video about the new nvidia shield tablet models and the new controller, and of course with the newer games. Regards.
Would be nice for the portable one to have a detachable screen, so that it can be used as a mini tablet. other then that, it's a nice product indeed :)
Great review!!! In my opinion, one of the best reviews I have seen on ur channel. Very entertaining & informatative. Hope ur making a lot of money! Lol
Thinking of getting one of these, never used to be sold on tablets, but now i work a job with a lot of down time, and a tablet makes perfect sense to have there. Its not too big like a laptop, but it has enough power and features to keep me entertained for a while when i am bored at work. And the shield with all of its gaming feature are just and added bonus!
I needed a Tablet all the time and occasional gaming. I had an iPad mini, and a shield one. Liked the Shield one, killer emulation. But it was like carrying a grapefruit all day. It tended to stay home while the Mini went with me, so I sold it. But I really missed my portable mame, an experience that is unpleasant at best in iOS. So I sold my iPad mini and bought this. So I have a tablet when I need one, and I'm a heavy tablet user. And I have a great gamebox when I want to game. I only log the controller when I NEED the controller. For the mixed gaming and tablet person the Tablet is perfect!
Brawler I've got a 620. It's sheeeeeeeiiiit and doesn't support any cool stuff. My fault for skimping on the GPU, I guess. The GT series GPUs (610 ~ 640) do not support Shadowplay and such, Those are only for the GTX series GPUs (650+). I really need a new gpu.
I bought this tablet almost a year ago just to use as a normal tablet and play a few android games once in a while and aside from slightly degraded battery life (that I'm guessing a theoretical Marshmallow update could fix) its still running great and I love it.
***** By galaxy I meant something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro or something like that. By use it the same way I use the iPad or Galaxy is that because Linus was talking so much about it for gaming using the controller. I was wondering if I could just use it like a normal tablet...
Honestly anything that you can put the android OS on will do this. Android is an operating system just like Windows is, anything that can run it will do what the Shield device does. The only difference is the performance. However one must note that there are just too few games that these tablets can churn out their power on. Its not like you can go ahead and play Skyrim on your tablet now.
Keston Lamers Really? He asks a question you happen to already know the answer to and that's the response? I've got a request for you then. Please stop posting such offensive, hateful shit.
If I'd get it, I would have gotten it for the actual tablet, streaming to my device from my pc is not that appealing, what is appealing, is a tablet that works great as a tablet, It has stereo speakers up front! That's a perk on which I'd pick this tablet over any other tablet out there.
Reading through all the comment I actually agree with you the most. The performance (hardware) is simply over the top. Average use does not require that much power. However the speakers seemed very nice.
Arian Abedi Linus said it before, tablets are not much faster than your phone, they don't need to be much faster, This seems like a very easy to use tablet, 8 inch is an odd size tho, you don't see many of those, either 10 or 7. If I would have gotten a tablet, it would be to watch movies/youtube in bed with my girlfriend, where my galaxy s4 is just bit too small and speakers are not very good... We were thinking about getting a transformer laptop tho, as nice as this is, I think it's worth to spend little extra for bigger screen and something you can still work on with ease as well as it serving as media PC, which this does but smaller form factor. Was it asus that came up with the windows laptop/tablet and android tablet in one? That you could detach the screen? I want something like that. I don't need something strong and powerful, that's what my rig is for.... And with steam sharing? It could be done on windows laptop too, right?
Fantastic Review Linus!! I'm a big fan of this! For me the main appeal is the GameStream Capabilities and the Tablet itself. I use my older tablet to read comics mainly and would love a tablet with a resolution that high. Also I think the gamestream feature is an absolute winner! Having my PC in my room and streaming to the TV via the tablet is awesome for games like FIFA and other party games! Flipping brilliant. I'm not such a huge fan of android games to be honest so I'm not too worried about gaming on the toilet XD Overall it looks like a fantastic product! Although I think that the second version will be the one worth waiting for as this is their first tablet and hopefully they will take into account the gripes with their first version and change things up! Great review! Keep it up!!
Just one remark: for all the situations u said the shield tablet is difficult to use with the controller (car, bathroom. ..), simply use the tablet without it. Playing on the tablet itself is a great experience anyway and if the situation allows it, then ADD the controller. That's the way I do it and I'm really happy with it.
Wow... more than three years after watching this video on the day of upload and never guessed I'd end up with one of these. A friend of mine just gave it to me because he wasn't using it anymore and I gotta say, it's still a great tablet to this day.
I love your channel not only because of the informative and friendly videos, but also because of the occasional power supply on a panini or similar hilarious scenario
This was one of Linus's more professional videos, I saw that he not only showed practical uses but also his personal uses which gave it a more usable feel for anyone....I will definitely be ordering this, in fact, I think I'll place the order now
Even if this is not the perfect gaming tablet. This is miles ahead of apple's ipad junk and samsung's Tab. This costs almost the same as these tablets depending on the country you live in and offers so much more. Even if i wont be gaming on this, i would still buy it to replace an ipad or a samsung tab
Hi Linus, I thoroughly enjoy your many reviews of products, question though, your annotation at 0:54 says the tablet cover is available for 20, but when I check Amazon and Nvidia's site, they both show it for 40. Minor error?
My advice after owning a 10" tablet for 3 years: Don't get one. Unless you actually have a use for the oversized display (I guess for some creation stuffs?), it's much better to go with a 7"or 8" if you want a tablet. An 11" small ultrabook is also a good alternative. It's too heavy and big to use as a portable device and really awkward to type on. I'll be getting the Tab S 8" since the small form factor and weight is amazing. Samsung really nailed it with the squared off design and super thin bezels. If anybody has a suggestion for how to use this hugeass thing other than a media center please, enlighten me :)
Am in a dilemma of choosing between an 8' or 10' tablet. Which one is better for youtube videos and ebook reading? Is the browsing experience good in an 8' tablet without having to zoom?
Why didn't you mention the Shield Portable can also be hooked to the tv in console mode at 1080p and you use the same wireless controller? Or is that in another review? I'll just keep clicking....
You mean looks like a Giant smartphone? Lets not pretend smartphones look all that different from each other. The differences can be summed up in color, metal/plastic body, rounded edges/not rounded edges. Done. Apart from that all of them look the same.
My father for me a Shield Tablet for Xmas 2015. I appreciate the effort, since he knows I'm a gamer, but I mostly use it as a backup e-reader to my Kindle.
With the price drops to shield portable I finally caved and bought one. It's is one of my best "cave in impulse buys" ever. I used to think that linus was exaggerating when he said he plays all his games on shield portable, but after laying in bed playing until the initial battery died, I can see where he was coming from.
Can it run Blender? Why no real hard drive? I will never, ever buy a tablet unless it come with a minimum 250 gigs of hard drive space. I have no use for a current day tablet. I'd rather get a HUGE touch screen monitor.
Because they are too bulky to fit in there properly? And why you dont just get an SD Card with 128gb if you need to. Or you just plug in an regular mobile USB Harddrive..
Hard drives are not that big. No hard drive in tablets is simply a way to get morons to use those clouds and waste their time constantly streaming BS. Why would I carry SD cards, or a hard drive when I can just carry a fully functional laptop? Tablets are about the dumbing down of society. Don't buy a real computer you can do stuff with and start a business with. No, just get your child a tablet, so they can learn nothing that will get them an actual job, besides at McD's. Notice how both tasks are similar.
Medhue You know buddy, after a Nexus 7 and an iPad mini I have come to the same conclusion. I thought i could use them but they are either too low on disk space or are running an OS that doesn't meet my need. I rather get a small laptop like MacBook Air or equilevant in size (and weight/battery ratio).
Medhue You know tablets are made to be mobile? A normal hdd can't be moved safely because it isn't shock resistant so it would be dumb to use one in a tablet.
"Over the Internet Game Stream"??. I'm sure you meant "Over the Intranet game stream" instead. This will work in your local network only (as I know), or does it have capabilities for remote access outside it?
Could you do a more in depth review of the stylus at any point or talk about it? I'm interested in getting it for that reason as I am a student and an artist. The price point of that tablet, size and performance seems to be a good combination of portability and a good deal. How does it compare to something like a wacom/n-trix sensor enabled tablet type thing?
Can someone explain the “keypad mapping” Linus mentions for android games? How do you actually do it? Can you map the keyboard and mouse to games like arena of valor?
I actually got 3 hours and 40 minutes playing Half Life 2 from fully charged battery. The way I achieved this was by locking the framerate to 30fps and lowered the resolution to 1280x800 (with the built in "App Optimization" category in "Settings"). Brightness was set to 75% speakers set to 60%, both wi-fi and position turned on. Even though the Shield tablet is quite dated today. It is technically far superior to any other tablet I have tried. I'm creating a game of my own, and I have to say, I'm more impressed today, than I was 2 years ago when I got the device. The shader performance is insane compared to other devices.
Dennis Ramberg I ended up getting the tablet but the newer K1 version without the worry of exploding batteries. I was surprised when I benchmarked it and it was scoring higher then $600-$700 cellphones lol
I know! it is a seriously powerful tablet. I also think it is a bit misunderstood on that department, and many benchmarks don't do the device justice. Android, as an operating system ,is still pretty bad with graphics and games. However Doom3 BFG Edition is to this day the best showcase. It is a well optimized game for the device as it was created with OpenGL. It can run at 1920x1200 with a almost solid 60fps. The Xbox 360 was struggled running it in 1280x720 at 60fps. That's not even half the pixel count of what shield K1 delivers. :) I think you made a good choice, I am super happy about mine. especially since I got a replacement. ;)
Both ! I'd love that review sample !!! I have the portable and I'd really like to get my hands on the tablet .... 2 player with both players having their own screens on the go ? that would be soo dope. I'm a huge fan of Nvidia and they're killing it when it comes to making new obscure products that no ones ever heard of but blows them away when people see you using it.
Eli Berry I don't like Nintendo and its games, also, I didn't like their new concept of "portable" console, but HEY, maybe I'm wrong and Nintendo will finally come back to 21 century and open their gates to the 3rd party community.
Jonathan Mello may i ask why you don't like nintendo games? and yes they will have 3rd party support skyrim is gonna be on it and you said you don't like the portible console aspect you dont have to use it as a portible console you could just use it as a home console and the switch will have AAA games on it and the shield tablet not so much
If I am only using it for gaming ( I have a tablet already ) is the tablet worth the extra $180 ( tablet, case and controller add up to $380 ) or should I just get the portable?
He states the exact reason I want it and would take it over an iPad any day. It's a total entertainment experience. It almost seems more logical than my phone because most of the time I don't even call people, I use text or FB messenger. The price is amazing, and every review is just awesome. There's not really much it can't do.
I'm totally ordering me one after I type this. I would be one of the persons that is in the category of using this to stream my computer games to my TV. I built a computer that is a very strong gaming/work station with dual 23 inch monitors. I just suck at a mouse and keyboard combo (bash me if you want). I haven't gamed like that in 20 years I want a controller period again bash me, and a big screen 60 inch plus. So I read my tablet at least 2 hours day so I want a powerful tablet. Also I freaking love gaming and if I can get my games on my plasma panel I would be in heaven. Ever review I have read says how good this tablet is and after your review which I greatly trust I'm sold. On another note your reviews totally helped me picking every aspect of my computer so thanks for doing these reviews they do help a ton.
September 4, 2019...I still use my shield portable, shield tablet, and tablet k1. The portable for emulation, the tablet k1 for the k1 exclusives and other games, and the regular tablet as my netflix and video streaming device. (Yes, I know the tablet and tablet k1 are pretty much identical).
Grilling that power supply... lmao i started cracking up when i noticed it
same
was it well done?
bacon Bliss I think he was trying to "fry" it, perhaps as a personalised punishment to do to it what it did that innocent Titan xp

Linus: "I don't care. Playing games."
wonderful review, i want the shield tablet so bad....
by the way, you're terrible at aiming with the bow XD
And u came to this wondering if Linus was amazing at a videogame? This is a tech series not a gaming one

I know :-) I missed to put mine on as well
Paddynoid Tradanoid well played

I should see a specialist...
I'm not such a huge fan of android games to be honest so I'm not too worried about gaming on the toilet XD
Overall it looks like a fantastic product!
That's the way I do it and I'm really happy with it.
two years later and nintendo is killing it
Linus sitting backwards on the toilet reminded me of South Park
Toilet police xD
can you use the controller wired
None wants to hear this ..
Yes
Wow... more than three years after watching this video on the day of upload and never guessed I'd end up with one of these. A friend of mine just gave it to me because he wasn't using it anymore and I gotta say, it's still a great tablet to this day.
I love your channel not only because of the informative and friendly videos, but also because of the occasional power supply on a panini or similar hilarious scenario
Just 3D-print a holder for the tablet to go on the controller. Jeez.:P
Does it work fine? Can you send me some pictures of your holder?
I don't have an nvidia Shield. :P
@@headontoast4510
It was just an idea...Sorry since I'm 5 years late.
What other game pads work with this?
You should try Moga game pads, not sure if they are compatible, though.
Grabbinpeelz84 Okay. I have to look on it.
Joonas Näykki moga works i think
if you notice, the controller has a xbox layout, so theoretically any xbox type controller should work
You should read the best comments about *NVIDIA SHIELD Controller* here amzn.to/1D762kM it's useful to choose the best Product !!!
im probally getting the k1 tablet because once i saw u can play hl2 and portal i was sold
This was one of Linus's more professional videos, I saw that he not only showed practical uses but also his personal uses which gave it a more usable feel for anyone....I will definitely be ordering this, in fact, I think I'll place the order now
Will that controller work with a Nexus 7 (2013)?
I'm holding a k1 in my hand right now and I don't see a stylus anywhere
That's because you have the newer version which is the K1 which doesn't come with a stylus.
notchblo 2910 dumbass
Even if this is not the perfect gaming tablet. This is miles ahead of apple's ipad junk and samsung's Tab. This costs almost the same as these tablets depending on the country you live in and offers so much more. Even if i wont be gaming on this, i would still buy it to replace an ipad or a samsung tab
Why do you poop facing away the toilet? WEIRDO.
Marco Arellano Got that reference there man!
I mostly got the shield to use it as a tablet, but the fact that i can run games with it is amazing
Hi Linus, I thoroughly enjoy your many reviews of products, question though, your annotation at 0:54 says the tablet cover is available for 20, but when I check Amazon and Nvidia's site, they both show it for 40. Minor error?
I am waiting for the next generation of this
yeah me too
do you mean waiting for the review?
yea cuz it's out
yeah can`t wait for shield portable 2
+MoonMan same
.... Was Linus... cooking a PSU on Brandon's Panini maker??????
Oh, Linus
Why not the tab pro?
Are you on the right video?
This is an 8" tablet....
Am in a dilemma of choosing between an 8' or 10' tablet. Which one is better for youtube videos and ebook reading? Is the browsing experience good in an 8' tablet without having to zoom?
I currently use a Nexus 7, which is 7", and have no problems at all. I think 10" is too big though, and even find my parents iPad too large.
Can you post the PSU recipe you were using in your kitchen? It looked delicious.
Why didn't you mention the Shield Portable can also be hooked to the tv in console mode at 1080p and you use the same wireless controller? Or is that in another review? I'll just keep clicking....
Looks like a giant HTC One...
Looks like a big Nexus 5 to me, but whatever.
You can still notice the plastic on the back, definitely doesn't look as sleek as the htc one.
randomname front speakers looks like htc.
Yeah they do, but the plastic construction is just a big give away. I must admit from a distance it could be mistaken for a larger htc one.
You mean looks like a Giant smartphone? Lets not pretend smartphones look all that different from each other. The differences can be summed up in color, metal/plastic body, rounded edges/not rounded edges. Done. Apart from that all of them look the same.
LOL that power supply
I'm going to try to shit facing the other way.
Johanna Zevenbergen 😁
My father for me a Shield Tablet for Xmas 2015. I appreciate the effort, since he knows I'm a gamer, but I mostly use it as a backup e-reader to my Kindle.
With the price drops to shield portable I finally caved and bought one. It's is one of my best "cave in impulse buys" ever. I used to think that linus was exaggerating when he said he plays all his games on shield portable, but after laying in bed playing until the initial battery died, I can see where he was coming from.
So is there any actual shield games? Or is it just android games and PC streaming? Cuz most android games are trash
Yeah there are pver 50 games
I experience physical pain when reading your comment as well your replies.
Medhue You know tablets are made to be mobile? A normal hdd can't be moved safely because it isn't shock resistant so it would be dumb to use one in a tablet.
3 years too late but...
"I suck at anime" hehe
5 years late but.....
*_He sucks at anime hehe_*
Great review! Happy to be subscribed! Keep the great work!!
"Over the Internet Game Stream"??. I'm sure you meant "Over the Intranet game stream" instead. This will work in your local network only (as I know), or does it have capabilities for remote access outside it?
Gee I wonder where Nintendo got all of their ideas for the Switch.
😏
that controller is so ugly...... looks like something you get with a cheap kids RC toy
Kavo-Thizzla it looks quite uncomfortable for me though, too blocky, the tablet looks nice though.
yh i very much prefer the x360 pc controller and playstation dualshock 4 pad
ThatWolffe yea ... looks uncomfortable ... i think they need to redesign the controller .
Ng Wee Kiat I agree it LOOKS uncomfortable, but Nvidia aren't idiots. They wouldn't release a controller that is horrible to use... right?
Looks like a Dreamcast controller
Why the fuck are you toasting a PSU?
who wouldn't?
huh? Is that something you find strange?
Well he's not gonna get anywhere by boiling it now is he?
You must be new here.
GamerStuff Are you saying you've seen him toast a PSU before?
Could you do a more in depth review of the stylus at any point or talk about it? I'm interested in getting it for that reason as I am a student and an artist. The price point of that tablet, size and performance seems to be a good combination of portability and a good deal. How does it compare to something like a wacom/n-trix sensor enabled tablet type thing?
Can someone explain the “keypad mapping” Linus mentions for android games? How do you actually do it?
Can you map the keyboard and mouse to games like arena of valor?
5:57 hahaha
I personally think this is pre NX
One point for gryffindor
Well thanks ha ha
psu yum
Absolutely amazing review man, very unbias and informative , way to go, best reviews on the internet hands down
I have a nvidia GPU gaming laptop so I'm curious how the game streaming will work. The control button mapper sounds nice also.
i prefer my razer blade 2014 :3
Did you just write this to show off? These are two different products with different intentions.
Sheelo A. yes he did, see the ":3" at the end?
Jeez if only everyone could afford 2k+ laptops!
Tablet
Laptop
Like comparing a car to a semi-truck.
***** I prefer my overly priced razer edge pro.
Did I hear 2 hour battery life?
2 Hours of constant gameplay
I've had 10 hrs watching videos and browsing memes, and 20 hrs standby
:) I think you made a good choice, I am super happy about mine. especially since I got a replacement. ;)
Power supply waffle anyone?
Awww yeah!
You are one rigorous reviewer, my friend... the toilet? The bed? Love it.
whos here beacuse of the switch?
I can't wait any longer, so I'm going to get this instead. It's portable and it hooks to a TV so I'm good.
Eli Berry it's much better than Switch
Jonathan Mello not even close (my opinion)
Eli Berry I don't like Nintendo and its games, also, I didn't like their new concept of "portable" console, but HEY, maybe I'm wrong and Nintendo will finally come back to 21 century and open their gates to the 3rd party community.
Jonathan Mello may i ask why you don't like nintendo games? and yes they will have 3rd party support skyrim is gonna be on it and you said you don't like the portible console aspect you dont have to use it as a portible console you could just use it as a home console and the switch will have AAA games on it and the shield tablet not so much
Stop with that shield nonsense
😉
If I am only using it for gaming ( I have a tablet already ) is the tablet worth the extra $180 ( tablet, case and controller add up to $380 ) or should I just get the portable?
was just looking at saving up for this(let my nexus 7 2012 go in the process)and you just told me more reason as to why i should.. thanks linus
Nintendo switch anyone?
Not really.
why were you cooking a PSU lol
Lmfao 10:01
+Geralt of Rivia FUCK YOU GOT ME!!! xD I should have know better by now.
+Someone lol he din't get ke
+Kian Gurney he was planning to trick us
He states the exact reason I want it and would take it over an iPad any day. It's a total entertainment experience. It almost seems more logical than my phone because most of the time I don't even call people, I use text or FB messenger. The price is amazing, and every review is just awesome. There's not really much it can't do.
Wow this was a fantastic review. It answered all of my questions and more. Great job.
Very comprehensive, liked and subscribed.
Just bought both pieces recently (tablet and controller). Can't wait to try this out!
I like the way Linus ended the video, he has a really unique perspective that i never thought of the shield.
