Plain Old Cars: 1973 Volkswagen Thing

The third car in our Plain Old Car Series is our 1973 VW Thing, also known as the Type 181. Originally designed as an off-road vehicle for the German military during WW2 and called the Kubelwagen, the Thing was sold in the United States only during 1973 and 1974. Bare and Basic, everyone recognizes a Thing when they see it!

If the gas heater is in proper working order it will have no trouble keeping the cabin very warm even in very cold weather. A/c was even an option on these when they were new. It’s too bad vw didn’t give it even more ground clearance. 4wd would have been nice too. Even without it they are still quite capable off road. I prefer these lifted a bit and with more aggressive tires.
