    I couldn't believe this. He was way too rough with the orchid plants. This maybe for a short term display, but not for the long term. I agree with everyone else---no plastic bags---and no ice cubes! Enjoy the growing season!

    Well I have to say to that this video was mis-named. He has told the audience nothing about growing and caring for Phaeleanopsis orchids! Thus voided should have been entitled 'How to decorate your home with orchids for special occasions'. So much of what he did and said are just wrong for the long term health of any orchid! It's nice to be able to place several blooming plants in a large enough container to showcase in your home especially when you're entertaining. However, if you do use plastic zip lock bags as he did, you should at least punch some holes at the bottom of the bag to allow the plant to drain after it is watered. The decorative pot that the orchids sit in should also have a drainage hole, otherwise the plants' roots are going to rot when they sit in the water that drains from the bag.
    If you follow his advice your orchids will ROT and will NOT live for more than a few months tops!

      Marie-Michelle I think he had just purchased the orchids. Not a natural environment at all. I have used wood baskets, hung them outside on my porch in Florida, tried to keep them in an all natural setting. Now I live in Texas & the climate is very different,. So I will attempt to grow here..Any tips are appreciated.

    • @Copolia

      Hi Bertie, the key with Phalaenopsis orchids is to ensure that there is decent air to their roots. You're so lucky in Florida as you have that constant warmth that they enjoy. You could probably get away with attaching them to a tree. I am in UK and I have to grow mine in plastic pots with extra ventilation holes that I have made with a soldering iron to allow plenty of air to circulate around the roots. I grow mine in a coarse bark mixture and they thrive.

      Marie-Michelle - I've watched quite a few orchid repoting videos done by US interior designers (don't ask why!), and it seema they all use almost the same technique - stuff a few poor orchids in one pretty looking pot, cover them with stabilised green sheet moss (they don't even bother using healthy sphagnum moss). Then they stick the orchids' arrangement in the darkest spot to liven it up, and hope that the plants don't die before client's payment gets deposited to their account! 😶🙁😞

      I would guess these, and other decorators, are using them only for one time decoration, surely not for growing. What a shame. Could cut holes in the plastic bags but how you gonna water with paper stuck around them? Seems like a lot of trouble to remove it weekly.

    I would not put the plants in a plastic bag, because when you water it, the roots will sit in water and rot. These plants need to drain fully and not sit in water.

  • @jojobee42
    @jojobee42 7 лет назад +20

    Seriously. This man has never grown orchids. What he's making is a short-term orchid display for some special event - not a long-term orchid arrangement. Orchids would DIE when put like that, because the roots can't breath and the water has no way of getting out. This guy is just pretending to know something about orchids, when in reality he's never owned one.

    P. Allen Smith is right about a few things. The Phalaenopsis orchid blossoms can last 3 to 7 months with minimal plant care and they do look great in any room especially with the wide variety of blossom colors. His use of wire to fasten the stakes and decorative stakes are a matter of taste. I like the bamboo and clips just fine. He knows a lot about decorating and design but he is a little confused about growing Phalaenopsis orchids. There are some orchids that need wet roots but not this variety. If no holes were punched in the plastic bags to allow good drainage, water would accumulate and cause the roots to rot which would kill the plant. Besides good drainage this orchid needs low to indirect light, and 65 to 85 degree temperatures, and no direct contact with glazed flower pots because toxins can be leached from the glaze which will slowly kill the plant. When they do bloom do not leave them where insects can pollinate them because pollination causes the blooms to die and the plant to make seed pods that are not nearly as pretty as the beautiful flowers.

    • @ThorKipperberg
      @ThorKipperberg 10 лет назад +3

      absolutley right :) I keep mine in a window,with direct sunlight a few hours in the morning, and they, the window stays partly open year around, an belive me it gets cold here in the winter, but they grow and thrive and blooms constantly, I never clip the flover stems unless they die back, cause they usually regrow flowers on the old stem.I water mine once a week, and give them some fertilizer in the water once a month, not much water at each time, just enough so the mulch gets damp. These orcids grows on trees, and small ledges in small jungle mountans,where there is barley any other water and soil than what they get from the mist and rainshowers amd soil made from leaf fall from time to time, I have noticed that they dont like it to warm and dry inside and they actually thrive best if the room they are in are a little bit cooler, and the flowers last long. now if you want seeds from them then let insects polinate them. If not just let them be :) These orcids are quite easy to maintain if they get little water weekly( mulch or soil never dry out completly ), some fertilizer, and morning sunlight,not to warm and dry. and never cut back the flower stems unless they die back.

      I have a plant that I found to have very badly wilted four bottom leaves. What treatment(s) would you suggest to help the plant recover? I pulled it out of the pot and found that the roots had mostly died off. I trimmed the dead roots away. There are black colored spots on the few remaining roots and I have painted them with a 1 to 4 diluted popular amber mouthwash in case the blackened areas are some type of fungus. Since there are just a minimal amount of root left I am thinking about cutting the bottom wilting leaves off next to the stem before re-potting up to the remaining leaves with fresh medium. Even though the plant is sick, the plant is putting out new growth in the top. Has anyone tried these tactics or does anyone have some other suggestions on how to save the plant?

    Never use ice cubes to water an Orchid. Temps for Phalaenopsis should not fall below 55 degrees F. Orchid roots like to cling to a wood mount or in a coarse medium that has air spaces for the roots. Orchid roots DESPISE glazed pots. Where does he get this information because he obviously does not grow them himself.

    This is suboptimal. If he had poked holes in those freezer bags, there might be some drainage happening, but it's best to give orchid roots breathing space. They grow on trees. Compared to other plants, orchids need less root room, and you replant them only when they start poking out of the pot holes. In this setup, it would be impossible to see when it's time to replant them. Also risk of being overwatered and roots rotting or not having enough room. (I grow dendrobium orchids.)

    you may be overwatering it a bit check your medium if it's sitting in water that might cause it even if it doesn't seem too much i usually water in the sink and let mine drain a few minutes before slipping them back into the outer pots
