Just want to put this here incase it helps anyone. If you have vencord, it could be a vencord issue, go into the vencord installer and press "reinstall/repair" then open up discord again. Hope this helps :3 edit: glad to have helped yall

Discord support told me they couldn't help and that I should install the beta of discord. They didn't even tell me what beta and how to download it, other than sending a link. I'm hoping this works.

If you're getting the “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program” error even though you had everything closed, uninstall discord first before doing this. It works for me. Edit: Alternatively, you can open up task manager and end discord task, like many commented below. I'm not tech savvy so the uninstalling was the easiest route I took on my own when there was no answer to this fix at the time I commented this 4 months ago😆Whichever works for you guys, I hope your problem is solved! I never even thought this was a thing, I thought uninstalling an application just gets rid of its data cache along with it. Ofc the fresh install did nothing. But this fixed it immediately, thank you!
Actually, discovered it's likely an issue with the Game Overlay feature. The thing that puts discord in the corner of your games and shows who's talking in games. Disable that, and it works just fine.
@@anthonyalbanese1993 in my case its not even letting me intro discord, I have also done a fresh install of discord. Deleted both roaming and local discords, used uninstallers and it doesnt let me intro discord

TEMPORARY FIX: This happens to me many times a day. The screen will go blank right in front of my eyes. It seems to be an issue with drawing the screen or rendering it. A quick fix is to use the mouse cursor and click where the titlebar of the app "would be". Basically, click and hold on the top of the app, then with the mouse button down, just move the window around a little. This will cause the app screen to refresh and draw itself back again. To put another way, when the screen is blank, just do what you would do if you wanted to move the app around on your screen by dragging the title bar. Even if it's full screen, you can still do this because Windows will automatically detach it from full screen mode to move it. It's a temporary fix because it may just go blank again at some point, but it's easy drag it again to refresh. Hopefully a real fix comes around. I don't know if deleting the appdata folder fixes it permenantly, so I wanted to share this quick fix.

When this started happening, I uninstalled and reinstalled thinking that would help. Nope, kept doing it. Tried this trick and nope, didn't work. Still getting the gray box despite the instructions.
I think it's a hardware acceleration issue - because for me it happens intermittently. Usually if I have a game up on one screen, and discord on another, and a RUclips vid on a 3rd screen. At least for me, rebooting fixing it. So it could be a graphics driver issue, as well.
I uninstalled and reinstalled with no effect too, this method didn't help right away neither but I deleted the folder again and uninstall-reinstalled after that, it worked

I had this happen to me, and I'm pretty sure it was actually because there were somehow 5 different instances of discord open at the same time when I opened task manager. Ended the task, reopened discord, worked perfectly fine.

Still nothing… a friend of mine had me turn on or off “Hardware Acceleration” now just a grey screen. I have tried everything that I can find, I have re installed, restarted comp, removed all data and installed, works fine on my phone, and on the web app, just the pc app

For anyone who has an error that says something along the lines as "You can't delete discord because it is still opened" just go to your task manager and end every discord task that is happening in the background. Then you should be able to delete discord file now.
Tried that but nothing was open in task. Instead i closed out the file window and reopened it. That, for whatever reason, seem to allow me to continue. Not that it mattered because this method did not work. Didn't even take 15 minutes for the blank screen to return.

for people who DONT wanna delete all the cache, u can just go inside the discord folder and delete the GPUcache and itll work just fine. its a GPU error not a discord error.

Ah perfect. Fixed in one attempt. I was wondering if there was a way to validate files on Discord, similar to Steam, and this seems to have a similar effect.
Tried the same method, worked normally afterwards for about a day. Then returned to going to grey screen every 10 minutes on the very next day. Tried doing this method again and again but even within 30 or so minutes discord does the same grey screen issue again :/

this is happening to me aswell, tried turning off hardware acceleration as some suggested but no success.
