Premier Guitar met up with Laura Jane Grace and James Bowman of Against Me! to talk about combining shimmering Rickenbackers and classic Les Pauls with some ferocious pedals and cranked amps.
Laura Jane Grace has always loved the sound and feel of the iconic Rick. She travels with two beloved and abused completely stock 360 Rickenbackers-one black and one white.
She also tours with a rare, black 3-pickup Rickenbacker 370 outfitted with a Mastery bridge mod.
When Laura wants to change it up, she goes to her Nash Esquire, with a Seymour Duncan Antiquity humbucker. All guitars are strung with Ernie Ball Cobalt 10-46.

this might be stupid. But i saw this video 8 years ago, discovered this band - and it changed my life forever.
actually that's awesome
The exact same thing happened to me. I had never heard of Against Me! until I somehow found this video in late 2015 and within two months they were my favorite band ever. Since then I've seen them 17 times in 12 states and one Canadian province, met all of them several times, got the AM! skull logo tattooed on my shoulder, and I even own the red Nash Telecaster James shows off in this video at 2:33.
I attended the second of just two shows (Portland, ME) they played in March of 2020 before aborting the tour for COVID and I fear that I witnessed the last AM! show ever because Laura seems to have lost her mind over the past few years. Even if the band were to somehow be reformed it'll never be the same because James would probably be the only one to come back. At least I had a fun 4 years...
Laura Jane is SUCH a badass! I love the idea of the same signal (lead/rhythm) into a similar amp (transparent) with a "few" effects....and A LOT of heart!
the heart makes the difference in my opinion.
R Hailey LOL
PG has been knocking out of the park lately with these Rig Rundowns! I've been a HUGE Against Me! fan for the past 13 years, and it's cool to see what they're rocking these days!
James is so cool, and Laura is always so nice in interviews and rig rundowns!
So cool that Ron Burgundy was at your show!!!
10 gauge strings are the 8.0.of skate decks in the guitar world
And the 13s I play is like the 9.25 punk point deck i got
So.. the best size? Agreed
One of the few videos I can find feauturing James Bowman, he seems laid back and dedicated to his work. I respect it
James is the man. KInd of shy but super cool.
And he’s got those sweet triangle sideburns.
He was so stoked when Laura let him handle the Tele
I have never been a huge Rickenbacker fan, but I like them in LJG's hands and music.
The smashed yellow one and the all black limited one I like the most.
Rubber capos or headstock tuners react with white finishes which explains the mark.
Brilliant...makes sense I never thought that.
Snarck tuner marks up a les paul and you won't get it out.
Awesome! Such a great live band. I love this rig rundown.
Laura's Nash looks so much like the new Fender Tele's, its amazing Nash and Fender aren't in a lawsuit right now.
They should be.
Trademark and intellectual property law requires that you defend your trademark or you lose exclusive access to it. Fender decided, ages ago not to defend these things so it’s too late now. That’s why there are a billion F style guitars on the market. ex. silver sky.
Gibson on the other hand is the polar opposite.
I will always be a fan. Keep it up!
Looks like capo marks on the rick
A guitar tuner or C-clamp might also make those marks.
Jon Guerra Capo marks? Is he related to groucho marks ?
They are burn marks from where the devil held the guitar. ;)
Jon Guerra its all capo marks my guy
laura is a very kind and friendly person
I've been seeing her play a jazzmaster a ton lately. Looks like everyone's playing something different. I'd love to see an updated rig rundown. They're actually coming to my city if someone could appoint me an honorary interviewer. As a fellow transgender musician that could be a cool experience.
Long way from bucket drums and a crap acoustic
mason s. That was better
Fancier gear happens when you bust ass, hustle, surround yourself with quality, professional musicians and keep pushing yourself to write bigger and better (subjective, I know... Maybe catchier and more digestible is a better term?) songs too grow your audience and reach legend status.
I'm happy with my rescued and rebuilt first act guitars and personally rewired 90s kustom amp, but you'd best damn believe that if the money started coming in id be rocking a mountain of Ricks, Fenders, LPs, Bogners and Vox.
I love that Laura sticks her tongue out at the end

Stewart Ross Her****
Batgirl nope nice try though. Biologically a man.

@@stewartross13 wow. This is an amazing amount of ignorance
Stoked to see gaslights rig
Regarding the marks on the headstock of Laura's white Ric 360, it's likely burn-in from a capo.
RICKENBACKERS
I'm lusting over that ric 360! You wouldn't think so but white is a rare finish on 360s, I always run into fireglos and blue but I've never played one that didn't play & sound great. That's a great combo for a two guitar rock attack a ric 360 and a Les Paul.
Roy Martin she talked about it recently. That’s a refinish after it got smashed
@@colinedmunds2238 thank you
Those marks on the headstock of Laura's Rick are probably from leaving a capo clamped there for a long period of time.
Good band option for a rundown, nice selection of gear. Shouldn't shotgun through the interview, but they may have been dealing with an impending door time. Also, Perry needs to chill the F out. Ask your questions, and then shut up and let the person answer. Nobody cares what you're familiar with, they're watching to hear the interviewee talk.
Sorry about that, but we were crunched with time trying to do two Rig Rundowns with two bands (Gaslight Anthem and Against Me!) around the bands' soundchecks and before doors opened. We hope you understand that given these sort of circumstances at nearly every shoot, it's not going to be a 20/20 production and we hope that's sort of the appeal of our program. Thanks for checking it out and we'll try to even things out if you promise to cut us some slack.
Dont be a dick. It's his job to be familiar with a variety of gear and to ask questions, but we can't all be familiar with everything! Its just impossible.
The host clearly knows a thing or two about some of the equipment on stage, so the more people talking about it, the merrier. It's a gear interview. I'm here for both the bands and knowledge. If Perry has something to contribute that a member of the band doesn't, let him. It's his job, and he does fine.
Okay, obviously I should have enunciated my point better. It's not about what he knows or doesn't know, and it's not about being engaged which he certainly is, but you can absolutely interject your personal gear knowledge into an interview without constantly talking over the interviewee. Perry, stop talking over the interviewee. That's all I'm saying.
I honestly laughed when perry said "It probably got an antiquity in it?" because it was a gift from james who literally put an antiquity in *every* guitar he has lol
From a side view the P.G. guy looks like tim mcilrath
the squad off marks are where someone kept a capo at on the headstock and the rubber reacted to the paint finish
About James' goldtop, the neck is (was at the time of the video) an antiquity. The bridge is still a burstbucker.
Umm no... He says that the bridge is an Antiquity in the video you are commenting on.
so cool to watch laura talk shop (: i only wish her segment of the video were longer
You guys finally bought a tripod.
Lol I play bass. I'm just here for Laura & James.
Good rig rundown questions, but "very cool" or "cool" after every other sentence gets old.
Bad ass as hell
That Tele (Esquire?) is so cool.
I want a Tele like Laura's. Though I'd probably use something different than those god-awful vintage style bridge saddles.
I actually prefer the brass saddles. Especially if they're compensated brass saddles and are easier to setup! I through in a fender humbucker and just need to get around to removing the neck pickup.
That guitar looks like the avril lavigne signature guitar.
What Telecaster is that Laura uses ???? Any leads plz ?
where can you get vox speakers that still look like an ac30?
I wanna know what the Orange Micro terror was in the amp case for!!
I'd guess emergency backup. Those things are small but can kick when they need to.
Could've been a backup
"Probably got an antiquity in it". Lol
Boost Fucktion!
Cartar!
That was great.
Ha, i forgot, I was at that show in nc.
+Bryce James Did you see the crowdsufer bang into the mic stand near Laura, which caused Laura to almost swallow the mic and smash her guitar?
No, I remember she left the stage suddenly and pushed her way through the crowd like something was wrong before the set was over, but everyone was so drunk and rowdy no one realized that they didn’t finish their set or that anything happened
I really like Perry
Seemed like they were just speeding through everything this time. Rig rundowns have been hit or miss lately guys, you gotta get some more solid interviewers or at least pace things better.
Sorry about that Caveira138, but we were crunched with time trying to do two Rig Rundowns with two bands (Gaslight Anthem and Against Me!) around the bands' soundchecks and before doors opened. We hope you understand that given these sort of circumstances at nearly every shoot, it's not going to be a 20/20 production and we hope that's sort of the appeal of our program. +Premier Guitar Completely reasonable and well-stated explanation. I thought it was pretty obvious they were crunched for time, and *of course* P.G. would want more time if they got it. I think they jammed lots of information in to 12 minutes.
Laura's Nash *Esquire* is absolutely killer, by the way.
Quit Bitching!
I can't stand guitar brats like you.
Lover her Rickenbacker guitars and Vox amps.
I shred this stitcher!
Thanks Perry, I thought my RUclips speed was on 1.5... nope, Normal
That black tele...
what song was playing at the beginning (no draude sandstorm or ANY variations)
+zeoalexo I Was a Teenage Anarchist.
thank you
hey my brothers name is james bowman!
what's the point of having 10 guitars with the same pickup?
they probably play a hell of a lot more than you do, so they need most of them. shit wears out after road time.
John Dwyer, Jus Oborn, David Eugene Edwards, and a bunch more.
admittedly there are tons of boring virtuosos, but "modern" guitarists with their own sound do exist.
aesthetics
Gold top, mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck, rosewood fret board, Custom mohagany body and top, maple neck ebony fret board, different tones from each, then add the bigsby to one or the other, and different tuning and a back up poof you have 10 guitars with the same pickup
Tunings and quick changes they do go out of tune
Gecko burst are so hard to find. Why would you refinish that?
Daniel Doran so is a fox body mustang, lots of people still like them.
Daniel Doran I just want to find one. Can’t find one lol.
Daniel Doran yeah I watch his stuff. Unfortunately I can’t afford one rn.
also, what's the exact function of a volume pedal?
+zeoalexo you lower it and raise it with your foot like a wah, and with it all the way down it cuts the sound, and as you raise it it raises the volume. Kinda like the volume knob on a guitar, only in pedal form
oh ok. always wondered. thank you
You can do swells with it, especially if the delay is on and you chord it. Do it right and you can get violin/cello effects.
Laura is such a badass. I love her. I love her attitude. Love her passion for music. Love her willingness to be open about her transition. She's a hero and a fantastic role model for trans rock musicians. Or just queer musicians in general. Not everyone is. Believe me. There are some TERRIBLE queer reps in the spotlight out there. Being yourself takes priority over everything else. She got to be herself, while maintaining a great musical career, surviving in this industry isn't easy for anyone at all, and she's so good at what she does. She has always been SO talented. The community was very welcoming when she came out (From what I've read and heard in interviews). She's just an all around great person. Not to mention, easy on the eyes. I would be honoured to gig with her one day. She's really helped so many people. She may not even know it. Also. I agree with the majority. The interview was a bit weird and rushed. Although when you're setting up to play a gig, it's a little more than chaotic. Either way. Always a pleasure!
Anyone has any info on the black tele? All this guy said it was a Nash.
Nash Guitars is a custom guitar builder. The black tele was a custom order, so it would be pretty hard to get any real specs on it other than what is shared in this video. You could probably email Nash if you really want to know. They're nice guys from what I've heard. Cheers
+We are Gruhak 5 months late I know but I just got an almost identical Nash to what Laura is playing, the only difference is that it has a single coil pickup and a traditional Tele bridge instead of her humbucker. Super light and an awesome sound, I love it!!! Some would sneer at paying a premium for a relic'ed guitar and I can understand that with something like a Fender Road-worn that's just a stock guitar with some seemingly random sanding but the Nash is broken in as if it's been played for 30 years and that makes it quite a sweet player. A Nash guitar would never be considered "cheap" but I'm quite happy with my choice.
SombraPiloto I don't have the slightest problem with relic guitars, on the contrary, i have a MJT strat which i think is an oustanding guitar. This particular tele really caught my eye for some reason and would gladly buy a Nash like this one if i could afford it :D
We are Gruhak I bought the Nash because I saw Laura playing one and thought it was a badass looking guitar. Had to drive about 100 miles each way to get it (listening to nothing but Against Me!) but it was worth it! I'm really liking the road worn Strats I've seen so if I don't buy a clean Strat-type guitar
and beat it up myself I might get one of those when the funds become available.
the red threat is not a big muff clone it is a high gain distortion with more gain on tap than the metal zone. it has a big muff style tone control.
Why do you guys never feature the bass players' rigs?
Sometimes they do. They did Todd the Rod from Propagandhi
A bit rushed.
What’s the point of having a bunch of guitars with the exact same pickup?
Consistency is my guess
What was that white pedal again she said...?!?
Reuss Rowland S Howard signature, forget the actual name. It's a Distortion+ and a Blue Box in one pedal
Never understood relicing
They always find the most awkward guys to do these rundowns
Yeah. Bring out John Bollinger.
Trying really hard to not seem like he's on coke
He says it's all stock expect for the Duncan pick up, then the guy goes so it's all stock other than that 😂😂😂
Incense sticks.. I know a few.. that’s where those marks come from… the smoke stains
Bad religion please!!!
I second this
I third it.
I fourth.
a lots of les paul junior for brian and mike, then P-bass, ephipone bass, fernandes bass for jay
Yes please. Thanks for starting! Would like to know BR's
11:50
plz, make rig rundown with bad religion!
And he keeps rubbing his nose!!
Funny, the goldtop looks like a Chibson cause the poti positions are messed up and asymetrical. At least that's what the wisecracks want to tell you, how to spot a chinese facsimile because original Gibsons are oh so perfect ... except that they're not. Nowadays more than ever the quality of Gibson guitars plain sucks. We are at a point where you may get a Chibson Les Paul, change the tuners and pickups, do a solid fret makeover and what you get is equal in value to a "mondays" Gibson original, for a 10th of the price.
Dudes chewing his face off
Why is that dude so awkward...
cocaine is a hell of a drug
My guess is he legitimately likes this band and the members and is a little starstruck. I certainly would be if I interviewed these guitarists.
Weezer!!!
Wrong video.
I can't believe that dude that's doing the interview said on the offspring rig rundown that he's always been into punk and didn't know punk bands use p 90s. that pretty much right there proves he don't know shit about punk because p 90s are in almost every classic punk band
The thing i've noticed about this guy is his use of the word "Cool" and "Very Cool". It's gotten so bad it's to the point where I'm only listening for him to say this about the gear. So I counted. In this 12 minute video, he said "Cool" 7 times and "Very Cool" 14 times... GEEZ
Cool guitars and Rigs. I'm not being a smartass, Is Laura a guy, a girl or both? Just wondering.
Laura is a woman. check out her show www.truetranstheshow.com

So why are you referring to her as he? If she says she's a woman, she's a woman. Period.
Ashley Who I don't believe it's from hate or malice, just a touch of ignorance.
I suspect that's true too, especially seeing as they initially used she.
Very cool. This presenter is the worst. Very cool.
8:06 There's hair in between the pickups. I don't even know whose that is. That is totally UNSANITARY! That's disgusting! It probably might be pubic hair.

+Wesley Kaiser It looked like hair!
did you just say its unsanitary... to a rock bands equipment...
That is one giant woman.

Too bad Against Me! became the Laura Jane Grace show. They used to be great.
guy or girl?
Transgender
Laura's a girl
Benjamin Welch Says who?
Welchy ?????
@Welchy Rock and roll started by messing up society, and letting people be whatever they want is messing up society, so that's kinda the point. One of the first rock musicians was a bisexual black woman, all of which were generally hated in the early 1950s. Why not trans people, who hold the same status now in many parts of the world.

What’s the point of having 5 guitars with the same pickups?
2for sure reasons, 1, you go out of tune 1/5 as fast, 2 they all feel different in your hands
